Jewson provides fibre cement slates from all major suppliers. The table below showsthe equivalent tiles of two established suppliers in this market. Because ofinterpretation of the latest British and European standards there may be slightdifferences in number of slates per square metre required by manufacturer. However, the table shows the approximate average that is generally acceptable. There may also be slight differences in acceptable roof pitch/batten gauge by certainmanufacturers depending on the severity of conditions. The table is intended as aguide for quantification purposes only and more detailed information can be obtainedby contacting the specific supplier.

NATURAL SLATE TILES

HOW TO WORK OUT THE NUMBER OF SLATES YOU NEEDMost slates are supplied pre-holed at either 75mm or 100mm headlap. This page will help you determine which headlap and how many slates and battens per square metre you require.

The map shown opposite indicates which parts of the country are exposed to moderate or severe weather conditions.

Use table 1 to establish the minimum headlap you will require based on the pitch of your roof, and whether your roof will be exposed to moderate or severe conditions.

The headlap this gives you is the minimum required. You will need to select the slate with the pre-holed headlap over this minimum e.g. 30° roof pitch in moderate exposure requires 80mm headlap. By rounding this up the 100mm pre-holed slate would be required.

Table 2 can then be used to establish the quantity of slate and batten required based on the slate size and headlap.

To work out the batten gauge, follow the calculation below:

Length of slate – headlap = gauge2

There may be slight differences in acceptable roof pitch/batten gauge by certain manufacturersdepending on the severity of the conditions. The table is intended as a guide for quantificationpurposes only and more detailed information can be obtained by contacting the specific supplier.

Natural Slate – Brazilian

The quality of slate can vary enormously, but there are two main grades: First/Premium, which comeswith a 50-year guarantee, and Standard/Economy, which has a 30-year guarantee. Some supplierseven offer a higher-grade slate with a 75-year guarantee.

Prices obviously vary according to grade and quality. We recommend you view our slates beforeordering – our roofing experts will be on hand to help you decide.

All Jewson slate conforms to the latest industry standard BSEN 12326:2004. As slate is a naturalproduct, some tiles may be a different thickness within the same load. It is therefore necessary to sort slates before work begins.

In order to provide a weatherproof junction, a complete range of universally designed, highperformance valley troughs for tile or slate roofs is available from Jewson. Each product is for use withroofs constructed in accordance with the relevant requirements of BS5534: Part 1: (Slating and Tiling)and BS8000: Part 6: (Workmanship on Building Sites).

PITCHED ROOFING ACCESSORIES PITCHED ROOFING FELTS

COLD ROOFNo ventilation of the roof space is required if using concrete, clay or natural slates. No counter battens are required when the underlay can‘drape’ between rafters.

WARM ROOFNo batten cavity ventilation required if using concrete, clay or natural slates. Counter battens are required, however the underlay can be laid on top of the insulation or over the counter batten so the underlay can‘drape’ between battens.

HYBRID WARM ROOFNo ventilation under or over the underlay is required if using concrete, clayor natural slates. No counter battens are needed if the underlay can ‘drape’between rafters (hybrid partial fill), counter battens are needed on full fillapplications or where a ‘drape’ in the underlay can not be maintained.

Pitched roof ventilators are used when continuous eaves or ridge line ventilation is not available withproprietary product, or for use with mechanical extraction units for kitchens/bathrooms or soil vent stacks.

BREATHABLE MEMBRANES

JEWSON 1FJewson offers the traditional BS 747 type 1F undertile felt, which is availablein 15m x 1m rolls. Where standard 1F felt is used provision should be made for the introduction of mechanical ventilation. Please refer to pages 32-35 for more information.

STANDARD FELTS

TILE VALLEY TROUGHA high quality valley trough for use with both interlockingand plain tiles. Pronounced upstands and wider secondarydrainage channels provide extra protection against waterpenetration and mortar blockage. The two firmly bondedsanded strips allow strong mortar adhesion.

SLATE VALLEY TROUGHDesigned for use with natural or man-made slates. Profile allows slates to be laid evenly in conventionalmanner except that slates do not need to be bedded with mortar, but can be laid ‘dry’.

BONDING STRIPAn effective method of jointing adjacent roof slopes, whether of similar or different materials ie slate and tile (not suitable for use with Cambrian Slates). Features a firmly bonded sanded strip to ensure strong mortar adhesion.

SECRET GUTTERA high performance secret gutter for use with all flatinterlocking tiles. Acts as a secondary line of defenceagainst wind driven rain at a vulnerable point on theroof. Anti-capillary rib stops water tracking back into the roof space. Manufactured from UV stabilised PVC.

VENTILATION

3332

VENTILATION

Ventilation is required within roof construction in order to control condensation within the buildingenvelope – this is documented in BS5250:2002. Detailed below is a basic guide to the standard.

INTRODUCTION TO VENTILATION LOW LEVEL EAVES TO EAVES VENTILATION

STANDARD DUO PITCH ROOFOF 15° PITCH AND ABOVE

REQUIREMENT:10mm continuous opening at eaves, with additional high levelventilation of 5mm for pitches over 35° and or spans over 10m.

LEAN-TO OR MONO PITCH ROOFOF 15° PITCH AND ABOVE

REQUIREMENT:10mm continuous opening at eaves and high level ventilation of 5mm.

DUO PITCH ROOF OF 15° AND ABOVE,WITH DIVISION WALLS

REQUIREMENT:10mm continuous opening at eaves, with a 5mm continuousopening immediately below, and 10mm continuous openingimmediately above each division wall.

DUO PITCH ROOF, WITH CEILING ANDINSULATION INCLINED

REQUIREMENT:25mm continuous opening at eaves, with additional high levelventilation of 5mm either side of the ridge line.

OVER-FASCIA VENTUsed where the fascia board is fitted to the ends of the rafters, creating a situation where ventilation can only be affected over the top ofthe board. Suitable for new build and refurbishment situations.

EAVES FELT SUPPORT TRAYThe Eaves Vent Protector is used to overcome two problems associatedwith using traditional bitumen based roofing felt. These are perishing andcracking at the point where it is dressed into the gutter, and watercollecting between rafters and the rear of the fascia board.

ROLL FORM EAVES VENTThis provides a very economical and convenient solution to the secondary eavesventilation. This product ensures that a ventilation channel at least 25mm deepis maintained between the insulation and roofing felt. Supplied in 6m rolls tobe rolled out along the rafters and nailed or stapled into position.

EAVES COMB FILLERThe Eaves Comb Filler prevents the entry of birds and rodents beneath profiled roof tiles.

CONTINUOUS SOFFIT VENT• Use where soffit board follows underside of rafters• Sloping Soffit Vent also available

NotesWhere continuous support is provided by Sarking under the battens, as in Scotland, 19x38 can be used. This table does not apply to any other application or situation.Battens complying to BS5534:2003 should be marked with the producer, species, size and, when graded, the grade. Where battens are unmarked or not pregraded it is the installer’s responsibility to ensure the batten meets all regulations. It is a requirement that all battens are given a final grading at time of installation.

1. Calculate the number of tiles across the roof 2086 (a) = 7 tilesDivide the eaves width (a) by the width of the tile from 298 across roof

the data tables (e.g. Double Roman Tile = 298mm). Round this up to the nearest full tile.

2. Calculate the number of courses up the roof slope 1715 (b) = 5 coursesFind out the maximum gauge of your selected tile from 343the data tables (e.g. Double Roman Tile = 343mm).Divide the verge length (b) by this number.

3. Calculate the number of interlocking tiles required for the roof 7 x 5 = 35 tilesMultiply the number of courses by the number of tiles across the width 35 x 2 = 70 tilesof the roof and multiply by 2 for both sides of the roof.

4. Allow for wastage 70 x 2.5% = 1.75Minimum wastage should be calculated at 2.5%. 1.75 + 70 = 71.75

= 72 tiles

1. Calculate the roof area 2086 (a) x 1715 (b) Multiply the eaves length (a) and the verge length (b) = 3.578m2 (one roof slope)to get the total area of a roof slope, and multiply by two 3.578m2 x 2 to get the total area of the roof in square metres. = 7.16m2 total area

2. Calculate the number of plain tiles required for the roof 7.16m2 (area) x 60 (tiles per m2) Multiply the total roof area by 60, the number of plain tiles = 429.6 per square metre and round up to the nearest full tile. = 430 tiles

3. Allow for wastage 430 x 5% = 21.5Minimum wastage should be calculated at 5%. 21.5 + 430 = 451.5

= 452 tiles

CALCULATING PLAIN ROOF TILES

1. Calculate the number of courses 1715 (b) = 17.15 = 18 coursesDividing the verge length (b) by 100mm, the approximate 100 maximum gauge of a Plain Tile, will give the number of tiles up the roof slope, known as the “number of courses”. The resultingnumber should be rounded up to the nearest full tile.

2. Calculate the number of tile and a halves 18 courses x 2 verges A tile and a half is needed in every other course at the verge. = 36 tile and a halvesThe easiest way to work this out is to allow one per course on one side. This automatically allows for a tile and a half to every other course and for both roof slopes on the roof.

CALCULATING TILE AND A HALVES FOR A PLAIN TILED ROOF

1. Calculate the number of eaves 2086 = 12.64 = 13 eavesTake the eaves length (a) and divide by the width of an eaves tile. 165mm

2. Calculate the number of eaves tiles 13 eaves x 4 = 52 eaves Multiply by 2 for both sides, and multiply by 2 again for the ridge.

1. Identify overlap requiredFrom table 1 below identify the required overlap based on your roof pitch.

Side lap should always be maintained at 100mm. The above minimum overlapsare all in accordance with current B.S. and European Standards. A standard 5% wastage factor should always be allowed for after your calculation.

2. Identify coverage of a 50m x 1.5m rollFrom table 2 below identify the coverage you require according to your overlap.

3. Calculate number of rolls required to cover your roofDivide the total area of your roof by the coverage from a single roll.

4. Allow for wastageMinimum wastage should be calculated at 5% and rounded up to the nearest roll.

Roof Pitch = 12.5º to 14 º then overlap = 225mm

Overlap = 225mm then coverage = 63.62m2

CALCULATING BATTENS

1. Calculate the square metre area of one slope 2086 (a) x 1715 (b) Multiply the eaves length by the rafter length. = 3.578m2

2. Calculate the total roof area 3.578 x 2 = 7.16m2

Multiply the area of one roof side by 2.

3. Calculate the number of rolls of underlay 7.16 (roof area) = 0.57 = 1 rollTo work out the area of underlay required, simply divide the 12.5 (roll cover) total roof area by the net coverage of a roll, 1 roll of underlay 1F (15m x 1m) = 12.50m2 (This allows for 2.5m2 of waste and overlap per roll), and then round up to the next full roll.

CALCULATING UNDERLAY (FELT)

1. Calculate the total verge length 1715 (b) x 4 = 6.86mThe verge lengths must be equal to the rafter lengths. There arefour verges to this roof area so multiply the verge length by 4.

2. Calculate the number of undercloak strips 6.86m = 5.71 = 6 stripsDivide the total verge lengths by 1.20m or 2.40m, 1.2m depending on the length of the undercloak strips available, orand round up to the nearest strip. 6.86m = 2.86 = 3 strips

Rafter

The table below can be used to calculate the length of the rise, hip or valley on a pitched roof.

Using this table:• Identify the pitch of the roof• Read across the table to find the calculation factor for the measurement you require

i.e. rise, rafter or hip/valley• Multiply this factor by the run

Example 1To find the rafter length on a roof with a 22.5º pitch and a run (or half span) of 4.8m:4.8m x 1.08 (factor from table) = 5.18m rafter length

Example 2To find the hip/valley length on a roof (or half span) of 7m:7m x 1.53 (factor from table) = 10.71m hip/valley length

You will need four items namely:

• 1m x 10mm fascia vent. Simply divide the total eaves length of the roof by 1m to give you the numberof fascia vents required.

• 6m roll form eaves vent. Simply divide the total eaves length of the roof by 6 to give you the number of roll form eaves vent required.

• 1m eaves protector/felt support tray. This product performs a dual function of protecting the felt fromexposure to the elements and simultaneously allowing the felt to remain supported. Divide your eavesmeasurement by 1m to give you the number of eaves protectors required.

• 1m comb filler. This is needed on profile tiles to prevent birds/vermin from entering the roof space. Divide the eaves measurement by 1m to give you the number of comb fillers required. See page 33 forfurther information on low-level eaves ventilation.

CALCULATING BASIC EAVES TO EAVES ROOF VENTILATION (Low level)

In roofs over 35˚ and/or 10m span, it is necessary under current regulations to introduce an airflow into the building at eaves low level. It is, however, necessary to allow the exit of that airflow at the ridge i.e. at high level. Jewson can supply various designs of ventilated ridge systems. Jewson can also supply ‘universalventilated ridge systems’ which can be used with most types of tile and/or slate product. See pages 34/35 forfurther information. Please note these systems still require the concrete/clay ridge tile.

Individual tile/slate vents can be purchased to introduce ventilation into irregular roof elevations. Soil and vent tiles/slates can also be purchased for mechanical extraction for kitchens and bathrooms.

CALCULATING RIDGE VENTILATION (High level)

This product is an actual standard tile made with a cloak as an allin one tile. Allow 1 unit per course of tiles up the after/verge.(These units will be sold as left/right hand units.)
