If you’ve ever been awake at four in the morning
these days you will hear the song of birds. They call you
to awake and ARISE; the earth that you thought was
dead with cold and darkness is indeed alive. The birds,
like the trees, grasses, and flowers testify to this life.
They sing out their song in a variety of ways, ARISE and
walk, ARISE and see the new life! All of creation is
helping us to realize what we are called to celebrate in
the Easter time, Jesus lives. This past Advent and Lent at
St. Gregory the Great along with many other parishes
throughout Brooklyn and Queens participated in the
ARISE program. This program was created to do just
this, call the members of this parish to ARISE and walk,
see and know Jesus the Lord in a deeper way. Maybe
you have not heard of it? It is a time set aside for people
in this parish to meet and speak, or just listen to the faith
journey of fellow parishioners.
In Advent, seventy parishioners signed up for this
journey and at Lent almost one hundred signed up. I
know that it might sound a bit frightening as all new
things do. I myself have never experienced something
like the ARISE program and so I was a bit nervous. The
book that comes along with the program allowed me and
all those who participated to be truly at ease. It had read-
ings of personal reflection and readings from Scripture
(usually the Gospel of the upcoming Sunday) along with
suggestions of how to reflect upon these readings. Parish-
ioners in my group said that they could not wait for the
next week’s meeting and when it ended they would truly
miss it.
Parishioners in the program gathered at a time that fit
into their schedule once a week for six weeks. Each
meeting ran for ninety minutes. Thoughts were shared
and friendships were formed. If you did not sign up for
either of these sessions you can still participate in the
next Advent and/or Lenten sessions in 2017-2018. Each
of the sessions is complete unto itself.
To reflect on one’s life and most especially on one’s
life in Christ is so greatly needed these days when life is
filled with distractions and a pace that is mind boggling.
Most often, from my experience, people don’t sit around
Cont.
and speak about their life, knowledge, thinking, and liv-
ing with the Lord. Here is a great opportunity, a special
time set apart to build up the body of Christ that is here at
St. Gregory the Great. It is a way to experience commu-
nity on a one to one basis. Christ comes to each of us and
sharing that self –knowledge with each other benefits
everyone present. When this then impacts how we treat
others through our actions and words interacting with the
people in the world, the work of God’s Kingdom is being
done. We are all just ordinary people who just speak
about our lives as we reflect on the readings in this book.
It is not difficult but it is truly astounding how powerful
this interaction has obviously been. Consider joining
ARISE this coming Advent and/or Lent and see how re-
flection on your faith journey can help deepen your rela-
tionship with the Lord and build the Kingdom of God in
our parish St. Gregory the Great.

SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
PASTOR’S DESK

“Yes, sir, I am the very John Curry.”
- Knock visionary in 1937
Years ago, Maureen Coyle, who was the librarian at
St. Gregory School, gave me a small book about the
apparition of Our Lady in Knock, Co. Mayo on the
evening of August 21,1879. Up until I received that
book, I really did not know much about what happened
in that poor village in “the forgotten West.” But after
returning to the rectory after working at the Festival
and being too keyed up to sleep, I read the book. I soon
found myself enthralled at how so many people wit-
nessed the silent presence of Our Lady with St. Joseph
and St. John the Evangelist in front of the gabble wall
of the parish church.
The youngest resident of the village to see the vision
was 5-year-old John Curry, who had to be lifted up by
his cousin to see over the hedgerow. He never forgot
what he witnessed.
As the years passed, John emigrated to New York
where he worked quietly as an orderly at the old City
Hospital on Welfare (now Roosevelt) Island. Bad
health led him to retire early and seek shelter with the
Little Sisters of the Poor in their home on 90th Street.
Everyone, it is said, gets 15 minutes of fame in his
or her lifetime, and John Curry’s came in 1937. That
year, a Commission was established in Ireland to study
the apparition in preparation for its 40th Anniversary.
Surviving visionaries were requested to give testi-
mony. John received a summons from the Tribunal
Cont.
of the Archdiocese of New York to give his testimony
on this side of the Atlantic. After testifying that he was
indeed the very John Curry who had been at Knock on
August 21,1879, he went on to describe in detail what
he had seen. His account was amazingly similar to the
accounts given by his neighbors in Knock. None the
less, when his 15 minutes of fame were over, he re-
turned to obscurity. When he passed away in 1943, he
was buried in an unmarked grave in a plot owned by
the Sisters in Resurrection Cemetery in Farmingdale.
Cardinal Dolan learned of John’s story and his fate
during a visit to Knock in 2015; and he arranged to
have John’s remains disinterred. Last Saturday, while
Pope Francis was in Fatima to mark the centennial of
the visions there, Cardinal Dolan celebrated a Requiem
Mass for John in St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral on Mott
Street. After Mass, John was accorded the singular
honor of being buried in the churchyard there. A hand-
some headstone now adorns his grave.
With the Festival on the horizon, I must hunt
around for Maureen’s book, and prepare myself to be
enthralled all over again.
The Most Reverend Thomas Daily, Bishop Emeritus of
Brooklyn died this past Monday, May 15th, at the
Bishop Mugavero Residence at Immaculate Concep-
tion Center. The Funeral Mass was held on Friday at
the Immaculate Conception Center’s main Chapel.
Please pray for the repose of his soul and for the con-
solation of his family and friends.
