Billy’s Bylines

Billy Smith

Bucks For Bill’s Bus! This Sunday, July 30th, will be another special, record-breaking day for our church family. As you know, at Bill’s encouragement, our elders committed to purchasing a brand new 29-passenger bus that has already taken our youth group to Atlanta, a mission trip to Michigan, and served our Oasis members on a couple of good trips. It promises to be another great blessing in our work for the Lord. With this being a fifth Sunday, our entire contribution will go toward the $33,000 balance for the bus. Our elders are challenging us to do what we are fully capable of doing, of reaching the goal and retiring this debt as quickly as the bus was purchased. The Lord being our Helper, we can and should do this! The contribution will take place in two phases. First, the order of worship will be adjusted to emphasize our need to give more to the Lord and His work. Roy’s lesson will be presented prior to the Lord’s Supper, followed by our usual offering. Second, while we sing two hymns, our children will be invited to bring their special gifts to the front, one of the most touching scenes we will experience this year. This precious group has been saving their coins for a couple of months and will generously give what they have, resulting in another amazing total. From their example, let us also give what we have. The one who gives the most to the Lord receives the most (2 Cor. 8-9). It is a law of nature that God has placed in creation, that the more we give the more we receive. What we need to do is trust in the promise and wait for the promise to be fulfilled. Generous giving leads to abundant receiving! Remember, “a little child shall lead them” (Isaiah 11:6).

How compassionate do you consider yourself to be? The word compassion in the dictionary is defined as, “a feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by misfortune, accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate the suffering.”

THE PIT

A man fell into a pit and couldn’t get himself out. • A realist said, “That’s a pit, alright.” • A subjective person came along and said, “I feel for you down there.” • An objective person saw the man and said, “With so many pits and so many people in the world,

it’s only logical that someone would fall in.” • A religionist said, “We have a committee meeting next Thursday night at the church to work out a

process to get him out of the pit.” • A Pharisee looked into the pit and said, “Only bad people fall into pits.”

Page 5: 240 White Avenue Phone: 731-989-5161 FAX: 731-989-9822 ...hendersoncoc.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/... · 5 Mark Morrison 5 David Sweeney 6 Gil Lamb 6 Bill Moore 6 Katelyn Phillips

• A mathematician calculated how he fell into the pit and the speed of his decline. • A self-righteous man said, “You deserve that pit.” • A preacher said, “If you had listened to me, you wouldn’t be in that pit.” • A psychiatrist said, “Your pit is only in your mind.” • A psychologist said, “Your parents are to blame for your pit.” • A geologist told the man to appreciate and study the rock strata. • An evolutionist said, “Natural selection has destined you to be removed from the evolutionary

cycle. In other words, you are going to die in the pit so that you cannot produce any more pit-falling offspring.”

• An inspector asked, “Do you have a permit for that pit?” • A self-pitying person said, “You haven’t seen anything until you’ve seen my pit.” • An optimist said, “Things could be worse.” • A pessimist said, “Things will be worse.”

Jesus saw the man in the pit, took him by the hand, and lifted him out.

Everyone wants someone to care, but it starts with you becoming a compassionate person. Are you willing to work at becoming a compassionate person?

Youth Notes August 4th – Laser Tag lock-in @ Laser Quest in Nashville – cost is $35. We will leave Henderson at 8:30 from the church on Friday night and will return by 9:00 Saturday morning. Deadline to sign up is Sunday, July 30!! Connor Walters – We want to make sure that we thank Connor for doing an outstanding job with our youth group this summer as our intern.
