Dear Friends and Families,
Welcome back to another season opening of SPARC programs! Last year’s influx of family involvement has inspired an exciting new expansion and transformation for SPARC’s future. It is our ongoing effort to “fill the gaps” in community services, providing same aged peer groups, and experiences matching individuals’ level of ability and independence. Additionally, SPARC has always worked collaboratively with Westchester schools and agencies to compliment their existing social and therapeutic recreation services.
So how does this impact our vision for SPARC and the coming year? *There will be new after-school services in many districts, providing a place for students with special needs to be integrated into their school communities. *Our specific programs for people on the autism spectrum are reaching kids and adults who benefit from professionals and interventions suited to their needs. *We now have 8 Friday night groups integrating teens and young adults into their neighborhoods in 3 different towns. *LINK-UP has become a 5 day weekly “without walls” day hab program to provide appropriate and meaningful experiences for post-high school graduates. *Programming opportunities for residents of group homes are multi-faceted to meet various budget and scheduling needs. We aim for SPARC to be the place you can turn to for the social and leisure life you seek. If we have it, come join; if we don’t let us know and we’ll make every effort to make it happen for you! Looking forward to good times, fun and friendship!
Warmly,

SPARC, Inc ., Special Program And Resource Connection, is a not-for-profit agency founded in 1989, now entering our 24th year of service . Our services reach over 1,000 individuals at locations in every corner of Westchester County . Weekly activities foster individual potential, new friendships and eliminate isolation . Programs and trips in typical community venues allow participants to strengthen inclusion skills and acceptance in their neighborhoods . SPARC also supports the community through resources, training and consultation for local agencies and professionals .
Our GoalsEvery person needs time to relax, be with friends, develop new abilities, and learn about oneself . SPARC provides active, challenging, and interesting recreation for people with special needs, as well as respite for their families . Our specialists use enjoyable, goal-oriented activities as steps towards overcoming obstacles and developing
behavioral, functional and life skill goals . We provide support, instruction, and adapted materials for each participant’s growth and success . A fun and joyful atmosphere fosters:
• positive attitudes, confidence & independence
• socialization & new friendships
• self-esteem & accomplishments
• community integration skills
• decision-making & self-determination
• problem solving in social situations
• self-expression & communication skills
• new interests & leisure skills
SPARC is part of the rhythm of life for each person benefitting from new skills, favorite activities, and friendships developed in our programs .
Our Professional Team is Just Right for YouSPARC’s team of creative professionals is experienced in therapeutic recreation, music therapy, art therapy, psychology, nursing, special education and social work . We understand participants’ personal needs, the spectrum of functional abilities, learning and developmental disabilities, communication disorders, medical frailty, seizures, allergies, special diets, adaptive equipment, and sign language . SPARC staff is knowledgeable about individuals’ social, emotional, physical, and medical concerns . Our specialists inspire participants to “reach for the stars” in a spirit of encouragement, friendship and fun .
Program LocationsPrograms meet throughout Westchester, enabling you to become part of your community in northern, central or southern towns . Accessible facilities are available .
EligibilitySPARC welcomes and accommodates individuals with developmental disabilities . Staff: participant ratio varies based on participants’ functional abilities . We do not provide 1:1 supervision or support behavioral issues which create safety concerns . Sessions are designed with sensitivity to participants’ strengths, needs and compatible peers . Groups are co-ed, based on age and abilities . Membership is open regardless of residence .
We also offer “Kids Express,” a general education, inclusionary after-school program .
Enrollment ProceduresNew participants must file SPARC’s registration application prior to joining programs . An intake interview with a Program Coordinator will help find the best placement for each applicant . Returning participants must update registration forms annually with changes in personal or contact infor-mation and signed authorization for recreation participation . Returning group members meeting deadlines have first choice should a waiting list be necessary . Registration deadlines, in general, are 3 weeks prior to program start dates . Once deadlines pass, please call to inquire about vacancies . We will make every effort to accommodate interested individuals .
Program Fees, Medicaid, Scholarships, RefundsFull payment of fees is required prior to program start dates . Please call (914) 243-0583 to inquire about scholarships, flexible payment plan or for a financial aid application if fees create a hardship . Full refunds for program withdrawal are available up to 1 week prior to program start, late withdrawal may incur cancellation fees . Starred (*) programs receive Medicaid waiver respite funding . SPARC fees cover additional program enhancements . Fees are 60% required, 40% requested family contribution . Medicaid regulations do not allow us to require a mandatory donation and you have the right to opt out . Without family support, programs expenses will not be met, thus jeopardizing our future ability to offer many of our youth and young adult programs .
Program DismissalPrompt pick-up is expected after activities . A late fee of $10 .00 per 10 minute increments applies .
Weather Advisory/CancellationsAs program locations cover a broad geographic area, weather varies and may cause cancella-tions in only some areas of the county . Program cancellation notice will be provided 3 hours prior to scheduled programs through email and telephone . Information is also available on SPARC’s office telephone answering machine (914) 243-0583 .
Our Mission
SPARC enhances the lives of people with developmental
disabilities through high quality therapeutic recreation activities. Participants work on
skill development in a nurturing social community that does not
otherwise exist in their lives.

Learning Independence in the Community A “Without Walls” Day Habilitation Program
LINK-UP is an innovative daytime program engaging young adults who have just graduated from high school in a daily program of community integration activities . The program supports higher ability participants with a 1:4 staff ratio . LINK-UP promotes independence through real life experiences using community resources and developing relationships with people we meet in the neighborhood . Members learn to navigate their own world through volunteer work, taking classes (computer, exercise, art, cooking), visiting exhibits, going on tours, using public transportation, handling money and practicing pre-vocational skills . Each young adult’s personal development is supported through guidance with making friends and social skills, learning about other cultures, decision making, problem solving and self-advocacy . A dynamic program of new experiences helps participants find involvements that bring new passions and satisfactions for their lives . Together, the group helps to choose activities for their schedule and learns about the neighborhood by being involved in it!
