Mapleton, Queensland
HAPPENINGS AROUND THE VILLAGE
Flowering at present in the grounds of the Mapleton State School. Thank you Burnie Collins for this image of the male cones. Araucaria bidwillii is a tall tree growing 30-45 metres in height, with a straight, rough barked trunk, and a very distinctive symmetrical, dome-shaped crown. It is an emergent species in subtropical rainforest and is confined to Queensland, where it occurs mainly between Nambour and Gympie and west to the Bunya Mountains, with a small occurrence in north Queensland on Mt.Lewis and at Cunnabullen Falls. The glossy green leaves are lance shaped, sharply pointed and about 50 mm long.
The male cones are narrow, cylindrical structures to about 20 cm long on the ends of short branchlets. They usually appear in autumn. The large, female fruiting cones are very large (football sized) and generally mature in summer through to early autumn but they are not formed every year (generally once every three years). Each female cone contains from 50 to 100 large ‘nuts’. These are edible and were a rich source of food for the Aborigines of south east Queensland. During the ‘Bunya season’ the Aborigines would temporarily set aside their tribal differences and gather in the mountains for great Bunya Nut Feasts – one being Mapleton area.

TAKE THE GUESSWORK OUT OF RECYCLING SOFT
PLASTICS
Have you ever wondered what happens to the soft plastics you
drop off for recycling at major supermarkets?
All the soft plastics that you can’t recycle at home in the yellow
wheelie bin are collected by REDcycle at participating supermar-
kets around Australia.
The collected plastic is returned to RED Group’s facility for initial
processing, then delivered to Victorian manufacturer Replas
where it is transformed into recycled-plastic products, from fit-
ness circuits to sturdy outdoor furniture, bollards, signage and
more.
Click on www.redcycle.net.au to find out what soft plastics they
can use or not use, and you may be surprised. A lot of food pack-
aging has ‘redcycle’ written on it, so that reduces the guesswork.
There’s also a list of what’s not suitable: not all brands of
clingwrap are the same.
Just make sure your plastic is dry and as empty as possible.
Here’s a snapshot of some unlikely soft plastics for the REDcycle
collection bin:
Bubble wrap (large sheets cut into A3 size pieces)
Cat and dog food pouches (as clean and dry as possible)
Cellophane from bunches of flowers (cut into A3 size pieces)
Chip and cracker packets (silver lined)
Chocolate and snack bar wrappers
Document sleeves (remove the white reinforcement strip
along the holes)
Ice cream wrappers
Plastic Australia Post satchels
Snap lock bags/zip lock bags
Newspaper and magazine wrap
Pasta bags
Squeeze pouches with lid on (e.g. yoghurt/baby food)
Thank you Glenis Ayling.
More information of this Melbourne Cup event will
be forthcoming soon but make this a date in your
diary.

MAPLETON WELCOME SIGN SURVEY RESULTS
Thank you to all respondents.
We have two clear winning themes: Waterlilies/liyponds and waterfall
NEXT STEP
You select sign type. We need to select the type of sign in
accordance with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main
Roads guidelines. The department controls signage on the mains
roads into Mapleton.
Option 1: Direct replacement aligned with
standards w ith two themes
Option 2: Direct replacement but with our layout featuring two themes
Option 3: Entrance statement such as a specially designed sculpture. Would involve an extended time frame to the on the ground installation.
RECOMMENDATION
Option 1 format Direct replacement aligned with standards
Why?
The signs look good with the right photographs
It is more likely to be achieved within a reasonable time frame.
As Main Roads did not replace the existing ones when the road was upgraded, they may come to the party to fund/part-fund new ones if we keep to the standard.
Can include two popular images with the design.
It does not preclude adding an Entry Statement in the future – different location.
ACTION Which sign option do you prefer?
If you are in agreement with the recommendation please send your agreement to [email protected].
If you disagree with the recommendation please also send your disagreement and your suggested option to [email protected].

PLEASE NOTE: OLD PAIRS OF SPECTACLES:
Thank you from Lions – many donations received. All are
appreciated. The Lions Glasses for Sight programme has been
suspended and the processing centre has been closed because of
the Covid pandemic. Collection boxes have been removed from
around the village. In hope this wonderful concept can return in
the near future.
RECYCLING IN MAPLETON
The Mapleton Bowls Club is collecting bottles and cans with the refunds going to sponsor an event at the Club. There is a convenient collection point which is a wheelie bin placed at the foot of the entry stairs. This bin can be distinguished from others as it has a convenient round hole in its roof where you can pop-in the recycle items. QLD container refund scheme in the school car park. All proceeds go to the Mapleton State School P&C. All your donations would be gratefully received and will go towards resources for our school and students. Mapleton Men’s Shed is also a receiving depot for recycling cans and bottles. These may be left in the sulo bins in front of the storage shed in Mapleton Forest Drive. Please do not crush the cans you deposit for recycling. JP SERVICE Still available to assist you during the current times Telephone 5445 7182 for a booking
