From the Principal…From the Principal…From the Principal…From the Principal… I hope that you have all had a good start to the term and you managed to have some rest and relaxation

over the school holidays. This term we welcome four new students to Poynter PS all from our local area.

I hope that our new families have a long and fruitful association with Poynter PS. We have many

avenues available for parents to be engaged in their children’s education so make sure that you touch

base with your child’s teacher, our wonderful class coordinators and the P&C or Board members.

Last term we finished on a buzz as Poynter won the Interschool Carnival for the third year in a row. Thank you for the

tremendous effort to all the staff who worked extremely hard to make it such a success. On the day our students’ were

welcomed by the whole school out the front to acknowledge their efforts as they got out of the bus. I did thank the staff,

students and parents at our last assembly in Term 3 but if you missed out on the wonderful news, you should be very

proud, as we are, of our students’ achievements. Well done to Mr Riley, Mr Joyce and Mr Barr for all the organisation and

thank you to Mr Ring, Mr Beard, Mr Righton and Mrs Duim for organising our students on the day.

At the last P&C meeting last term a decision was made for the Uniform Shop to be outsourced to a company called Nell

Gray. As part of this process it means that school uniforms will no longer be available here at the school but instead you

will be able to purchase them directly from the supplier in Joondalup or order them online. This Friday will be the last

opportunity for you to purchase from our Uniform Shop here at school. The Uniform Shop will be open this Friday for the

last time from 2:45 -3:15 before the remaining stock is moved to Joondalup. The advantages of having it outsourced are

many but the main one is that we will only have one supplier instead of six. I would like to thank the many parents that

helped in the running of the Uniform Shop but particularly Leanne Masterson for coordinating the shop for so many years

and to Helen Cawley for taking over from Leanne. Please know that the uniform will not change and that the new contract

is drawn between the school and Nell Gray and the P&C are no longer involved. A flyer will come out shortly to let you

know of the new process.

Next week we farewell Mrs Lorraine Edwards from the front office, who will be taking leave without pay to

join her husband for possibly a year in Serbia. Mrs Edwards has been at Poynter Primary School for over

13 years and will be very much missed. As always we wish her well in her new adventure and hopefully

she will come back to us after that. Mrs Mel Bursey will continue in the front office for two days with Mrs

Allen who returns from leave next week.

Continuing with the Teachers Can Code program, Mrs Reid worked with the Year 3 and 4 staff yesterday on how to use

the Ozbot’s that the P&C kindly paid for to support our Technologies Program. The Year 5 students in Mrs Reid’s class

had a go at them first and thoroughly enjoyed the activities. The Ozbots will be used with the Year 3 and 4 classes.

Operational Matters

School Development Days 2019

Last term I advised the School Board and the P&C that there was going to be a change to our School Development Days

(SDD) for 2019. SDDs are allocated to schools so that all staff can be involved in planning, reviewing and professional

learning. The Department has allocated six days again for 2019. For the past five years we have had two consecutive

days in November to allow for a Network Conference on one of these days.

Page 3: 24 October 2018 OYNTER NEWS - poynterps.wa.edu.au · Y1 – Novak Vojinovic, Maeve O’Connor, Fraser Lamont, Charlotte Chatfield, Mitchell King Y2 – Evan Sherwood, David Gavenea,

From the PrincipalFrom the PrincipalFrom the PrincipalFrom the Principal cont…..cont…..cont…..cont….. However, as a Network of schools we have not had a conference for the last four years and will not be having a conference

next year as well. I have checked with my colleagues to determine what days they are having (as most of us are doing

something different) and I have tried to align our SDD to most of the other schools including Carine SHS. Therefore, our

scheduled SD days for 2019 will be:

• Term 1 - Thursday 31 January and Friday 1 February (before students begin)

• Term 2 - Monday 29 April (first day of the term)

• Term 3 - Monday 22 July (first day of the term)

• Term 4 - Monday 18 November and Friday 20 December (students finish 19 December)

School Server

Once every 7 or 8 years we have to replace our school server and we have been told that this is going to occur from 3:00pm

Friday 23 November until possibly COB Wednesday 28 November. Although this is not an ideal time for the school given

that we are working on student reports, we are required to upgrade. I am letting you know early that there will be no email

communication of any type from the school from the 23 Nov to 28 Nov 2018. The only way to communicate will be via phone

so please make sure that your contact information is up to date on our system as we will be printing emergency contacts to

ensure that we can contact you in case of an emergency. As all our systems work through our server we are going

completely off line. Please mark these dates on your calendar as you will need to notify us the old fashioned way if your

children are absent.

Kiss and Drive

I am just letting you know that we managed to extend the Kiss and Drive bays by two over the school holidays. We have

been working with the City of Joondalup to improve the traffic flow in that area to make it easier for pick up and drop off.

Thank you for your patience when using the Kiss and Drive. I will continue to work with the City of Joondalup and the

Department to improve the parking facilities around the school. I have been at this since the 23 September 2015 but

unfortunately these things cost money and always take time.

Lost Property

Hopefully winter is almost over and because of the weather we seemed to have accumulated quite a number of items of

clothing. Please make sure you ask your child to check the lost property as we are seeing quite a number of students

wearing jackets other than what is part of our uniform.

Have a good week! Keyla Jeffers

DID YOU KNOW? Persia became Iran in 1935 but that many Iranians still refer to themselves as

Persian? Persia is the home of the Zoroastrian religion - a faith that embodies the notion of light and fire as being good.

Year 6 French 2018 I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching French to the Year 6s

over the past four years. What a delightful group of

students! They have been most enthusiastic, participating

keenly in lessons. It has been very satisfying to watch

them grow in confidence as their listening and speaking

skills improved and their reading and writing skills

developed. Many talented Languages students have emerged within this group.

The highlight for Year 6 students this year was our French Cultural Day in Term 3 in which

all students played a significant role. ‘Merci beaucoup’ to everyone who made it a

successful and wonderful, entertainment filled day, celebrating French Culture. You all did

yourselves very proud!

SPORTS NEWS Interschool Athletics Carnival

On Thursday 13 September and Friday 14 September our school athletics team headed to Joondalup Arena to compete in the 2018 CDSSA Interschool Athletics Carnival. Once again, we achieved great success across a range of events, especially in the team events. Many thanks to Mrs Duim, Mr Ring, Mr Beard and Mr Righton for coaching the leaderball and passball teams. These teachers gave up a lot of their time to coach the teams and they did a marvellous job.

Our students represented Poynter Primary well through their dedication and perseverance. We are pleased to say that we have now won the Outright Shield for the third year in a row. This is a remarkable achievement. Congratulations to all our competitors and to our Champion and Runner-up medallion recipients.

Coles Sports for Schools

Our new Tee-ball equipment has finally arrived. Big thanks to Yasmine Harland and Pam Birnie for all the hard work put into this, including counting the vouchers. Thank you to everyone who collected vouchers.

CrossFit

CrossFit started again on Friday 19 October and will be held on all Friday mornings up until 7 December.

CrossFit Kids combines weight lifting, body-weight training, such as squats and pull-ups and endurance training such as running and jumping.

CrossFit is a fun way for students to develop the strength and conditioning they need to excel in sport. It’s also a great way for students to develop healthy habits and social skills.

Respect of self, of others, our community and the environment are high on the list of positive qualities of this student.

This student is a reflective learner who is always challenging herself in class. Poynter Primary School’s core values of

Resilience, Confidence, Organisation, Respect, Persistence and Compassion are followed closely and with great pride.

spirit and compassion for those in need. We are very proud of this student and her fine achievements.

P&C NEWS - Next meeting Wednesday 7 November

Welcome to Term 4.

How 2018 has flown by and we are into the downhill run. Class coordinators will be putting the word out for donations and

people to assist in coordinating and helping on the day for the CHRISTMAS STAFF LUNCH. This has been scheduled for

Friday 7 December and a long standing tradition at Poynter Primary. If you can assist on this sub committee please let us

know; calls for donations of food and other items will come out shortly.

As Mrs Jeffers has mentioned, the Uniform Shop will have its last opening this Friday before moving to Joondalup with

Nell Gray. I would like to acknowledge the work that all the volunteers have done in the Uniform Shop over the years and

say a big thank you to them all! Also huge thanks to Helen Cawley and Mrs Jeffers for their efforts in coordinating the

move and doing the leg work to make this happen. The flexibility of ordering will make it a much more streamlined

process going forward, and a less arduous process for our volunteers for very little reward. If you have additional funds in

QuickCliq and you are worried about leaving it there, there is means to get a refund by going through the website, however

remember this can also be used for P&C events in the future.

Poynter P&C will still support second hand uniforms sales as an ongoing service. This will now however, be managed

through the Poynter P&C Farmers Market Stall. Good quality, unwanted uniforms that have been donated will be sold at

the P&C Stand at upcoming markets (start date to be confirmed), with the proceeds going back to the P&C. Items from

lost property will not be sold, therefore donated items will require names to be erased with a permanent marker prior to

donation please. Any ‘named’ items will be returned to the lost property basket.

Our next meeting will be held on WEDNESDAY 7 NOVEMBER. Please note that it is a Wednesday and is an altered date

from the calendar to allow fund allocation for items requested to be approved after discussion at the last meeting

(23/10/2018). For more information please attend the next meeting. New members are always welcome, you can join at

any meeting with a gold coin fee.

We do require some positions to be filled in the very near future.

• Market Buyer

• Treasurer for 2019 (to commence training now, this will need to be officially voted in at the AGM in 2019)

• All executive roles will automatically become available in 2019 to be voted in at the AGM.

Executive committee includes:

♦ President

♦ Vice President

♦ Secretary

♦ Treasurer

♦ Executive members (x3)

If you are interested please contact us at [email protected] and more information can be provided.

If you are a P&C member and you are not receiving the minutes can you please let us know by emailing

[email protected]. We have endeavoured to get them to all our new members from the last meeting

however some have bounced back. Thank you.

We look forward to seeing many new members on 7 November.

Triple P – Positive Parenting Program® Getting Results By Professor Ma$ Sanders - founder of the Triple P – Posive Parenng Program

®. For more informaon go to www.triplep-parenng.net.

It’s natural to want your child to do well at school and some parents use a reward such as money to encourage their children to get better grades. I’ve often heard of parents offering their child money for every “A” on their end of term report card.

One of the problems with giving children financial incentives for good end-of-term grades is that the reward comes too long after the effort is made.

Rather than waiting till the end of term, it’s much more effective to set up a system of rewards which are brief and frequent and which encourage positive daily habits. These daily habits then build towards an eventual outcome, such as a good homework and study routine.

However, you can encourage children to build good study and homework habits without having to resort to offering money.

Why not try a reward such as spending time with your child doing an activity they really like? Or you could offer a special treat you know they’ll enjoy. The object is to encourage good routines by giving extra attention and praise or small frequent rewards when they are doing the right thing.

When kids are struggling that little bit of extra attention can encourage them into new patterns of behaviour – and they may end up getting that A after all!
