From the School Leadership Team‘Adolescents are NOT mini-adults’, says Andrew Fuller, renowned Australian clinical psychologist, ‘Expecting teenagers to show a lot of forethought, planning, consideration and impulse control is like expecting a goldfish to recite Shakespeare. This is why it is absolutely pointless arguing with teenagers. I like to think that arguing with a teenager is like mud wrestling with a pig - you both end up dirty but only the pig is happy!’ The wisdom comes when parents and teachers opt to NOT respond when the conversations heat up, the assignment load looms and the test schedule mounts.

If there are some challenging moments in your house and communication channels with your adolescent seem blocked at times, you’ll want to claim the date for the next Parent Information Evening. Panelists Dr James Scott, Dr Jayne Murdoch and Hillbrook’s psychologist, Michael Johnstone will address the topic, ‘Talking With Teens: Keeping Communication Channels Open’. So, think about adding Tuesday 18 June, 5.30-7.30pm to your calendar, and pick up some tips for bridge building.

In the meantime you may want to ponder the suggestions that Michael Carr-Gregg offers in his small but potent book, ‘Surviving Adolescents’.

8. Let some things go by you - avoid commenting on all their actions.

Timber Surfboards UpdateHBS are travelling well with construction of their timber surfboards. There have been many hours spent gluing and taping timber rails onto the foam blanks. All the boards have been back down to Burleigh Heads to be vacuum bagged - an intricate process that is done at Dovetail Surfboards. Most members will be finishing off their boards over the next few weeks.

If anyone is interested in having a go at shaping his or her own surfboard, we meet every Thursday afternoon in the workshop from 3pm-5pm. We will look at taking another group through the process next semester and be finished in time to carve it up during the Christmas holidays.

Parents Outdoors Program (POP) Upcoming EventsNepal POP 2014/15 - First Planning Meeting Wednesday 12 June; 5.30-7pm; HB Library Conference RoomThere are already 20 staff, parents and past students interested in this trip, 9 of which have confirmed they will be attending this meeting. Looks like this trip will definitely be going ahead. This meeting is to nut out some of the broader parameters.

Ropes Course Day - NEW!!Saturday 20 July; 8am-1.30pm; Upper KedronThis option has just been offered. The Higgins are a HB family and generously allow us the use of their land for our high ropes course. They would like to extend an invitation to HB parents to come out for the morning for a play in the trees followed by a casual lunch on their back deck. Places are strictly limited. Cost is $60, to secure your place please contact Norelle Milhouse with your payment details or drop a cheque* in the Admin box.

Horse Riding Weekend Friday 9 – Sunday 11 August; Equathon - Edenview, WidgeeJust recently I met with the owner of Equathon to inspect their property and work out program details. While this option has not been run before I am confident it will be another successful addition to our Outdoor Education program. I already have 12 parents interested in this trip, of which 9 have a deposit securing their place. Numbers are limited, to confirm your place send in a deposit of $100 (total trip cost is $450) please contact Norelle Milhouse with your payment details or drop a cheque* in the Admin box.

Brisbane to Gold Cost Cycle Challenge (100km) Sunday 20 OctoberPencil this one in your diaries and keep an eye on the newsletter in Term 3 for expressions of interest. I’m keen to see just how many HB staff, parents and students we can get on this ride. We will also organise training rides closer to the date.

For more information on any of the above options please contact me.

Looking forward to seeing you out there.

Simon Roberts - POP Coordinator

* All cheques for POP activities should be made out to Hillbrook Foundation with an accompanying note including your details.

POP Girraween - Parent’s ReportLast weekend a group of ten adventurous parents departed Hillbrook to have a taste of what their children experience on the Year 9 Girraween camp. The Friday afternoon departure was delayed a few minutes due to a stow-a-way cat (luckily) found hiding in a car that was being left at school all weekend.

A pizza and pasta dinner awaited in a very warm restaurant, in a very chilly Stanthorpe. We had some trouble leaving the warmth to pitch tents in a much darker and colder campsite.

The next day saw us set off for the start of our 14 kilometre journey of discovery and challenge. A short walk and scramble led us to an underground creek, which saw the start of the challenges for the day. Two game (mad?) parents accompanied Simon to take the challenge of a dip in the chilly waters.

After thawing them out, we were off to our gourmet lunch stop some distance away on top of Mt Norman. The challenges came thick and fast after lunch, the first of which was named the Stormin Norman Squeeze of Shame; a very narrow gap between two converging vertical walls. There was much laughter and sucking lunch in to squeeze through an ever-narrowing slot. This saw the start of some in jokes and a bonding of the group that continued through the rest of the weekend.

The next challenge was a short walk away to the Worm-hole, which is a long ever-constricting crawl-on-your-belly type cave, which saw more laughter and some very dirty parents pop out a very narrow exit hole. Time was then of the essence to get to the top of Castle Rock to watch what turned out to be a spectacular sunset while taking some time apart to reflect in silence before coming together with the call of the haunting didgeridoo.

A walk home in the dark without torches back to camp to cook dinner, before pulling out the guitars bought by two of the dads for some impromptu music and singing.

Sunday saw a shorter day with a walk up the First Pyramid where trust and team work played an important part in ascending the steep climb. Further trust games were played on top of the pyramid surrounded by some breathtaking scenery, before having to descend to pack up and leave this beautiful place.

A quick stop at a Cidery where we were served the world’s biggest slices of apple pie, before heading back to Brisbane to recount the stories with our families.

The POP is a truly remarkable program and from a first and certainly not a last timer’s perspective; it is a significant component of what makes Hillbrook such a unique and valuable place, not only for our children, but the parents as well.

Parking in Hurdcotte StreetWe would like to remind all parents who pick students up on a regular basis, that the far end of Hurdcotte Street is a ‘No Standing’ zone. Please be mindful of this, as it presents a hazard to students attempting to cross over to the island. Thank you.

Lines From the Library Books & ReadingYear 8s are finishing up the presentation of their picture books this week. We have seen some truly beautiful and inspiring works of writing and art – well done to our young authors and illustrators. In our reading lessons we have been looking at picture books for older readers and many students have also completed a review of three such books for their reading record booklets.

Research & AssignmentsYear 8 Global students continue work on their assigned topic of ‘Entering the Modern Age’. Some are researching the Reformation, others the Renaissance and still more looking at exploration and discovery in the Golden Age. This week students have been working on refining their hypotheses and taking effective notes from books and other resources.

Year 10 Global classes looking into social, legal, political and military matters in Australian history. The range of topics is wide and students are encouraged to come up with their own field of study if they wish.

And, despotic Roman Emperors are on the radar for Year 12 Ancient History students who are learning about the Roman Republic and then the Empire.

News & Special EventsWhilst we have excellent text and e-resources in our library collection, senior students are encouraged to access external online resources and other academic libraries in their quest for additional information to aid research.

Many have already signed up for an e-services card and are using State Library of Queensland’s excellent online resources. Go to www.slq.qld.gov.au/services/join for more information.

Our two local universities also offer services for local senior high school students too. Both require the school to provide an indemnity form.

QUT are now offering free library membership for all Year 11 and 12 students (same access as UQ is $25 – books can be borrowed, online resources only used on site). They have also tailored links for high school students to some useful QUT resources, like CiteWrite, Studywell and Assignment Calculator. QUT are also offering free library tours and research/database workshops. Visit www.library.qut.edu.au/services/community/schools for further information.

At UQ, students may borrow eight items. And the previous 14-day loan period has been extended to 28 days, to better meet school research and assignment needs. Providing no holds are placed on the items, students will be permitted one further 28 day renewal. UQ has a $25 fee, payable up-front. Visit www.library.uq.edu.au/help/secondary-schools for more details.

Going places or just wish you were? Then check out the new travel section in our Library. We have lots of great guide books and pictorials to choose from for your planning (and for armchair travellers to enjoy too!)

Thank you so much for the generous donation of so many great books for the Sustainability Day book sale. The cut-off for dropping books to us is next Monday 27 May, to allow us time to get them sorted and boxed around our usual library duties.

The ChocLits Gala Book Sale will be staffed by students and will be located on the Library Deck. We are selling junior and teen fiction for 50 cents per book, non-fiction for $1, and adult fiction for $2 per book. Profits made will be going to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, which works to support reading and provides books to indigenous communities.

In addition to these great recycled bargains we will be offering book-art for sale. These one-off, bespoke, handmade works of art will be very reasonably priced. Do come see us on the day and bag yourself a pre-loved book or...ten!

And just for fun...A first edition copy of ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ that contains author J.K. Rowling’s notes and original illustrations is going on sale in a charity auction. The personal annotations from Rowling included comments on the process of writing and a section from an early draft of the novel. Visit http://globalnews.ca/news/575706/annotated-first-edition-of-harry-potter-book-to-be-auctioned-for-charity for further details.

Happy reading,

2013 Cross CountryThis year’s Cross Country course saw the addition of a new water crossing on the 5km circuit. We have named this section ‘Wilson’s Crossing’, after Year 12 Student Darcy Wilson. Darcy gave up a lot of time and effort to construct this section of the course for the enjoyment of others.

Team White should be congratulated for coming together to take out the overall points and shield on the day. This is their second year in a row winning both the Swimming and Cross Country carnivals.

It was pleasing to see students and staff stepping out of their comfort zone on the day to give it their best. Some were out just to complete the course while others were racing against the clock. No matter what challenge that they had set themselves, it was great to see the smiles as they crossed the line and felt that sense of accomplishment that only comes from giving your best effort.

Congratulations to all students and a particular note of thanks to the Sports Council for assisting in the administration of the carnival in such a thoughtful and positive manner. Well done.

Test your navigation and time management skills on a points score course. Riders start

en-mass and gather as many controls as possible in the allotted time.

applied.

Only basic map reading and navigation skills are required. All riding will be on sealed roads, dirt roads and tracks in the Samford Valley. A BBQ and soft drinks will be available at the end so you can compare the route choices over a feed. Venue: This event will be in roads, recreation trails, parkland

and bush tracks in the Samford Valley. The terrain is gently undulating with one or two climbs for those who want the big points.

Courses: Short 1.5hr & Long 2hrs
