Small Brewer's Relief
The reaction to the proposed changes to Small Brewer's Duty
Relief (SBR) rumbles on, with petitions and boycotts being organised.

This will be one of the last times we can link to
Brewbound, as they are moving the site behind a paid
firewall in mid-August. This week they published a
Brewers Association survey which reports that Craft Beer
revenues have declined 10% in the USA in the first half of 2020.

This is even more alarming, considering that as of mid-march, things were on track for 3 to 4% growth for
the year.
The survey reported widely differing fortunes from one brewery to another, with some significant gainers
emerging from lock-down, consistent with the experience in the UK.
On a more positive note, the predicted rush of outright brewery closures hasn't yet materialised, and the
article speculates that there are at least a further thousand "breweries in planning" in the USA at the
moment, to add to the 8,341 already brewing in the USA.

TAPROOM REVIEW We take a look at a popular taproom each week
The Crafty Taproom, 77 High Street, Marlow SL7 1AB
I would struggle to think of a more ideal High St in the UK than Marlow, upon which to open a Taproom.
Marlow is a vibrant and prosperous small town on one of the most picturesque reaches of the River Thames. The High
St has a major hospitality-slant, with numerous cafes, pubs and restaurants, but prior to November 2019, no specialist
Taproom.
The Crafty Taproom have ten taps which offer a well-curated selection of beer styles from mainly Thames Valley
breweries. To complement the draft beers, they also stock a good selection of wines and spirits, to ensure that all of
your party is fully refreshed.
The Taproom has been very tastefully fitted-out and offers space for 5 or 6 socially distanced groups inside. They are
also about to have several tables at the front of the Taproom, just in time for the August heatwave!
The Crafty Taproom is a very welcome addition to Marlow High St, and I am certain that tourists and locals alike will
be keeping them busy for years to come!

ecosystem that surrounds them.
We define Independent as being those breweries who are not wholly or partly owned by a macro brewery.
A macro brewery is generally defined as a large, national or international brewery that produces and
distributes more than 6 million barrels of beer per year.
Getting a new brewery off the ground is an expensive business, so most have external shareholders in some
shape or form, whether through friends and family, crowdfunding, or some other form of investment. In
our opinion, this does not compromise their independence, as long as the shareholder is not a macro
brewery.

We all love our hoppy beers and probably can name some of our favourite hops. This rough and ready guide
