Presenter: Gregory Hall, MD, Geriatrician, Chairman, Ohio Commission on Minority Health Member, Cuyahoga County Board of Health

According to the National Institutes of Health, the overall health of the elderly population in America is improving, but minority elders are disproportionately affected by differences in access to care and are less likely to receive routine medical care. Consistency and equity of care should be promoted not only because it is just, but because healthcare disparities are costly and can lead to significant morbidity and disability. This session will provide an overview of healthcare disparities among African-American elders, and describe public policy and practical solutions for eliminating these disparities and improving health outcomes.

A caregiver is an unpaid individual involved in assisting others with activities of daily living and/or medical tasks. Borrowing principles from total quality management and the emerging consumer-satisfaction movement in the field of aging, this session will explore how technology and other tools might assist family members who are caring at home for an older relative.
