    Logo Project

    PROJECT OVERVIEW:

For this project we created three dierent company logos

using randomly chosen words generated from our piers. As a

class we generated lists of nouns and a separate list of business

categories. We then separated these nouns and businesses onto

little strips of paper and into separate categorical piles. Each person

randomly selected three of each. We then created three noun and

business category combinations from the paper strips we selected.

These then became our logo assignments. From here we generated

logos that combined the two words into a believable company logo.

The reason for this assignment was to help us learn to

combine things as part of the creative process. As designers it is

important to understand and have experience with this process.

Much of the success of a design can be attributed to this skill. After

all James Webb Young who said, An idea is nothing more nor less

than a new combination of old elements (Foster, Jack. 2007-06-01.

How to Get Ideas, p. 4. Berrett-Koehler Publishers, Kindle Edition).

And in order to have a database to pull these old elements from to

create these new combinations we need to expose ourselves to as

much design and art as possible.

    SUMMARY:

For this part of the project I really need to revisit my process for

designing. For the alphabet project I really had a hard time because I

didnt really use a design process. For some reason I feel that I have

forgotten how to create ideas for design and not just merely making

something look good. So for this project I stri ved to move back to my

process. But doing this I really gained a new found importance for

the design process. Without the visual research and brainstorming I

wouldnt have been able to come up with valid sketch ideas.

I also learned that for me its hard for me to look at the ideas

objectively. I found that I was playing it too safe. I didnt want to take

risks. I need to throw out as many ideas as possible. I dont know

why I do this, but I do. It must be because Im afraid to fail. I want to

grow and learn but Im to scared. I need to let go and not think about

it too much. If Im ever going to be creative as a designer I need to

    overcome that set back.

    SUMMARY:

During this renement of the project I tried something different

I tried going out to the park to do my sketches. It really helped being

out in the open. It was more relaxing which helped me concentrate.

I also tried to sketch with my iPad. In some cases this helped but in

some cases it didnt. It helped because with the iPad I could easily

use different tools in the app I was using to make different shapes.

However despite this convince sometimes the best tool is a paper

    and pencil.

Another thing that I am learning during this project is that the

creative process isnt a strict guideline with you follow. Its a process

you use to generate ideas. And it works best when you work with

others. I think that all too often designers think too much about

what they are doing that they have a hard time doing it . This is what

I struggle with. I always think too much about my design and what

would work versus what wouldnt. When really all I need to do is just

draw! Get my ideas out on paper then decide what would work and

    what wouldnt.

    SUMMARY:

This part of the project has been really hard on me. My logos

I feel were still missing something but I couldnt see what. Even after

working with Owen and getting some feed back on the logos that

I had I was stil l having a hard time seeing what was missing. Then

today, a day before the designs were due I started to see it. For this

part of the project I really have learned what Brother Randall was

talking about when he said that artist do the best work right before

the deadline. I still have no idea why this is. But I have experienced it

    rst hand.

Another thing that I have learned this week is that I really need

to get outside more. I need to go out and experience life. I spend

way too much time working on my computer and not enough time

enjoying myself. Ive learned the in order to be a good designer this

is key element in the process. Ive started to notice that I am most

creative and I design best when I am happy and Im not stressed. I

feel like I am learning this little by l ittle throughout this semester.

    FINAL SUMMARY:

I feel that my logos are an effective design to portray the

companies in which they represent. My Polo logo is by far my

strongest logo of all three. It conveys a sleek sport image with

recognizable elements that tie the whole design together. The font

that I chose for the logo really works well with it. I had to modify a font

in order to achieve these results but in the end i t was worth it. The

lines of the font really compliment the form of the brandmark.

I had a hard time with the Eye Learn logo. I had a problem

getting the brandmark to be able to stand alone and at the same

time look good with the logo font. I found that it was either one or the

other. The logo that I ended up choosing have a decent balance of

visual rhythm but its strength is the recognizability of the shapes in

    relation to the company.

Finally the Puppy Preschool logo I feel came together really

well. I had a number of options that I feel were good di rections to go

with the logo. In fact the b iggest problem that I had with this logo was

deciding on the best direction to go with. I was able to nd a couple

of fonts that complimented the form of the brandmark. Rounding

and circles are very much repeated throughout the logo in both the

brandmark and logotype. I feel this repeated form really helps pull the

    design together.

This project has been a real struggle for me. I had a hard time

with the deadlines. I have spent many nights up late working on it. But

that is one of the things that I am learning is how to make sacrices.

Ive have had to push myself in my other design classes before, but

this class has pushed me hard by far than all the others. Ive reallyhad to learn how to manage my time. Also procrastination is another

thing that is hitting me in the face. Before I though that I was good at

managing my time but I have realized during this project that I dont

    manage it well enough.

Finally probably the biggest thing that I have gained during this

whole project is an appreciation for Brother Randall as an artist and

a teacher. To be honest I really didnt like him. I thought that he was

way too rough as a teacher. I would use the phrase, this is just a 200

level class and that he is pushing us way too hard. I would get angry

with him at times. But I instead of quitting I stayed. This past week I

have started to see connections between art/design and gospel/life

that Ive never seen before. I really feel that he is teaching us to be

designers not just how to design.
