What does it mean to be `in but not of, the world’? This phrase comes from this section of John’s gospel (John 17. 11-19). Rev. William Willimon of Duke University believes Chris-tians are "resident aliens". He tells a story of a woman he calls "Gladys" confronts her youth pastor over what is an essential difference between the ministry of the Church and the entertainments of the world makes his point: "She explained that earlier at the meeting of the vestry, the youth minister had given a glowing report on the visit of the youth to Disney World. After the report, Gladys asked, `What does this have to do with youth ministry?' With some defensiveness in his voice, the youth minister explained that this was `to build community among our youth group.' `They can build community right here in Louisville,' said Gladys. `I can't see the point of taking a group of privileged, affluent youth to Disney World. They've already been there and done that.' The minister continued to defend the trip with growing defensiveness in his voice: `Our kids don't know each other. Community is im-portant.' `Christian community is important,' re-butted Gladys. `Taking a group of spoiled, privi-leged kids to a place like Disney World where all they'll do is romp in a capitalist playground for four days, brings out all of their worst tenden-cies, and is a waste of time for the church as far as I'm concerned.' Gladys said, `At that point, they started yelling at me.' I think Gladys understood what it means to be, `in but not of, the world. Msgr. Frank Kelley

SACRED HEART PARISH Roslindale, MA

PARISH STEWARDSHIP Thank you to those who have made an increase in your giving for this coming year. We have an extra burden of snow removal (2014—cost us $85,000 .00). God knows what 2015 will be. Fr. Kelley

Sacred Heart’s baptism program is run by two teams of catechists. This allows us to provide baptism preparation in Spanish and in English. We have two teams of ten lay catechists. Each month some of them present at a Saturday meet-ing in Spanish on the first Saturday, and in Eng-lish on the third Saturday. Each presentation to the families presenting their child for baptism discusses the sacrament and the practical aspects of the baptism. The baptism is held on the second and fourth Sunday at 3 pm in English and on the third Saturday af-ternoon in Spanish. We have a number of parish members who sew and prepare the baptismal gowns for the children. Over the past six months we have had a student intern from Boston College who is do-ing follow up with our families who have had a baptism in the last three years. Our baptism numbers for the past few years are as follows: 2011—167; 2012—160; 2013—154; 2014—158. FHK For Baptism information Contact: Maggie La-

PARISH FINANCE REFLECTIONS…..

GOLFERS! GOLFERS! GOLFERS!

SPONSORS! SPONSORS! SPONSORS! Sacred Heart’s 18th annual golf tournament is set for Friday, September 25th at George Wright. This is the parish’s one and only yearly fund raiser that supports BOTH the parish and the school. Its helped many things become a reality such as, the stations of the cross in the upper church, new windows and white boards at the school and more. This year, now that all our facilities have been updated and fixed, we need to make our upper church accessible to those who can’t climb the stairs the disa-bled, and we all know someone who can’t get up there. So our golf tournament will kick off fundrais-ing for this special project that will assist all of us, es-pecially our disabled parishioners. All you can do to help financially for this special need would be great. Spread the word! Ask around who can golf that day (we need 100+ golfers), it’s a great day every-one always enjoys! We also need a small team of peo-ple to help find sponsors, large and small. So it’s im-portant to become part of the team well in advance! AND if we can get this under way before sum-mer gets settled in our minds, because golf comes up very quickly after the Labor Day weekend.

CATHOLIC APPEAL for 2015 We are almost over the top! At 99%, we are only 1% away from our goal. Please make your gift today and complete our giving for the Catholic Appeal. GROWTH AND IMPROVEMENT AT SACRED HEART SCHOOL

I want to share with you some great news concerning the fu-ture plans for Sacred Heart School. This is a brief summary of the transformation for our school.

On Thursday evening, April 16th, our principal, Monica Hal-diman, spoke with 200 of our parents concerning the future of our school. The board and staff presented changes in our school’s curriculum and structure. This new program will be phased in over the next two years. PHASE ONE The first changes begin in the fall of 2015. In PHASE ONE we begin with a revamp-ing of our preschool program. Starting in Septem-ber of 2015 our three and four year old program will run from 7:30 am until 5:30 pm Monday to Friday. This program shall run for 12 months a year. As well we will have a 1:1 technology pro-gram for all students in grades 4-8. PHASE TWO In the fall of 2016 we begin full implementation of our STREAM curriculum (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts and Math) for GRADES K2-8 We will extend the school day for (grades K2 --grade 8 ) from 8 am until 4:00 pm. This will provide us time to fully im-merse students in STREAM curriculum. The 1:1 technology program will include all students in K2 to the 3rd grade.

This is only a bare bones description for our bulletin. Please contact our school (617-323-2500) for an appointment to discuss our plans further with Ms Haldiman, our principal. Msgr. Frank Kelley

Today’s Liturgy Today’s Gospel by St. John describes, while Jesus is at the Last Supper with His apos-tles, one of Jesus’ prayers to God is when He talks to the Father. Jesus asks God to keep the disciples in “Your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, just as You and I are one.” When I was with them, I protected them in Your name and none of them was lost but Judas, and Jesus beseeches His Father to keep them from the “evil one”, the Devil. Jesus talks with His Father about Jesus’ coming death and then He speaks to His apostles so they may share His joy at going to Heaven with God. This Gospel ends with Jesus asking God to “consecrate them in the truth; for Your word is truth”. You “sent me into the world so I send them into the world. I consecrate myself for them, so that they also may be consecrated in the truth”. St. John is telling us that Jesus’ prayer is a request to God to care for His apostles and also for all the members of the Church to come. These prayers remind me that I should attempt to live using these particular gospel prayers. When Jesus and God pray for me, I joyfully pray to them. Nancy Hill

Seventh Sunday of Easter May 17, 2015

SEPTIMO DOMINGO DE PASCUA 1ª lectura: Hch. 1, 15-17. 20-26 2ª lectura: 1 Jn. 4, 11-16 Evangelio: Jn. 17, 11-19

REFLEXION PARA LA ASCENCION La Ascensión del Señor nos trae la alegría, el go-zo profundo y el regocijo porque nuestro Señor ha triunfado definitivamente. Con su gloriosa resu-rrección ha vencido a nuestros enemigos: al de-monio, al pecado y a la muerte. Pero su ascensión a los cielos confirma su victoria y culmina su glo-rificación como Mesías, Redentor e Hijo de Dios. Pero ese triunfo no es sólo de Él. ¡También es nuestro! Porque Cristo nos ha abierto las puertas del Reino de los cielos y ahora se va –como dijo a sus apóstoles en la Última Cena– "para preparar-nos un lugar". Y luego, cuando nos lo haya prepa-rado, de nuevo volverá y nos tomará para llevar-nos a donde está Él, para que estemos con Él para siempre. (Jn 14, 2-3). ¡Ése es el motivo profundo de nuestra esperanza! Pero como Cristo es Dios, es omnipotente. Y para Él no hay imposibles. Se va, pero se queda al mismo tiempo, como lo hizo la noche bendita del Jueves Santo al instaurar la Eucaristía. Sólo su amor podía tener esas ocurren-cias. Pero el suyo es un amor todopoderoso y efi-caz. Nuestro amor humano también sueña y expe-rimenta deseos semejantes, pero somos radical-mente impotentes para cumplir los sueños y los anhelos de nuestro amor. Pues Cristo sí puede rea-lizarlos: se va. Pero se queda con nosotros. ¡Qué maravilla! ¡Qué enorme consuelo para nuestra soledad y para nuestras horas de tristeza, de oscu-ridad, de abatimiento, de derrota y de desesperan-za! Sí. Cristo se queda: "No los dejaré huérfanos;
