of my family and of the boys’ father when it comes to school expenses. It would be a lot harder if I had to do it alone for three,” she says.
Brooklyn, Lucas and Tyler Mulitalo, 5, are eagerly await-ing school to start and are looking forward to being in the same class together again.
In their bedrooms are their school uniforms in a neat pile waiting to be worn, and their new backpacks with their stationery.
They are very excited, Jessica says.
“They love school and each have their own strengths.
“Brooklyn is good with num-bers, Lucas loves writing and Tyler does well with reading,”
Jessica says.She went on to explain the
importance of having a ‘strict routine’.
“You can imagine homework time can be stressful with three,” she laughs.
“But I have a very tight rou-tine with the boys, it’s the only way to keep on top of things.”
The boys will be in a year 1/2 class this year and Jessica is looking forward to another good year.
“Redwoodtown has been wonderful to my boys and is quite cultural, which is good as the boys’ father is Samoan.”

Bluebridge will have a new ferry for its Cook Strait run by July.
The Santa Regina will retire after 14 years carrying freight and passengers on Cook Strait to make way for Strait Ship-ping’s newest addition, the Stena Feronia.
The Stena Feronia is a 186 metre roll-on roll-off freight and passenger ferry that is currently sailing the Gothenburg (Swe-den) to Kiel (Germany) route.
The ship is significantly larger than the Santa Regina, with the potential to carry around 60 trucks, 150 cars and more than 500 passengers.
The ship’s facilities include a movie lounge, cafeteria, café and bar; children’s play area, quiet lounge and separate driver’s cabins.
The ship will dock in Europe in April where the passenger areas will be upgraded and she will
receive her new name and Strait Shipping and Bluebridge livery.

is expected to join Cook Strait Service in July, at which time the Santa Regina will be retired.

looks set to fly its nine seater aircraft between Westport and Wellington six days a week.
Air New Zealand is set to pull out of Westport in April with Sounds Air set to offer 40-minute flights on a nine-seater Pilatus PC12 - a single-engine, turboprop plane.

cipal rural fire officer Rich-ard McNamara says the land scorched by a 53 hectare-fire at Dashwood Pass near Seddon has been handed back to the owner.
The blaze, which started on Monday and has proved difficult to extinguish since, has been given the all clear after infrared cameras located eight potential hot spots on Wednesday that were put out and then monitored by the two remaining fire crews.
A fire investigator has also concluded his work at the scene and is now compiling a report.
“We do know that the fire started close to the train tracks,” McNamara says.
He says it could have been a major fire.
He says the fire fighters of Marlborough are tired after two large fires in the past fortnight and the need to deal with other small fires and ensure they do not become big ones.
“The guys are tired but they’ve done an outstanding job.”
McNamara says some cooler nights had helped ease some
pressure on fire fighters but it was only temporary.
“All this hot weather is great for summer in Marlborough and we want people to enjoy it but also be aware of the serious fire danger.”
He urged people to be careful when mowing in the heat of the day or doing other tasks which could spark a fire like welding and grinding.
McNamara said people who start fire can be held financially responsible for their actions.

Provisional statistics released by Water Safety New Zealand earlier this week suggested Marlborough did not contribute to the 90 deaths recorded nationally.

scanner installed in Blenheim by February have been extended by six weeks.
The scanner will be attached in its own building beside the radiology department at Wairau Hospital.
Pacific Radiology Group chief executive, Dr Lance Lawler says plans hadn’t changed other than being ‘confronted with some issues onsite’.
“We came across a few extra pipes in the ground which we had to shift away from, but other than that we are looking on track and keen to get moving with this.”
Lawler says the scanner will be housed by a prefabricated building that had been purpose built in Australia.
It is a ‘permanent temporary’ building that will be craned in and placed on concrete piles which have been designed specifically to attach to it.
“People won’t really be able to tell they are walking into a separate building. It will be like walking from one corridor to another,” Lawler says.
The building has an inbuilt shield system to protect outside devices from interference from the scanner.
Likewise, the system will also protect the radio-frequency inside from outside devices, he says.
“What you won’t see is that within the building’s structure is a copper cage. It’s necessary as there will be a lot of specialised technology within.”
Lawler says he expects the completion date will be early March.

Katrina Lange says ticket sales for March’s Havelock Mussel Festival are on par with last year at the same time.
She says she has noticed more visitors buying tickets than in previous years.
This year’s festival features the return of chef Chelsea Winter, with Benny Tipene providing the headline entertainment act.

returned to Blenheim fol-lowing his studies, and has taken a big step by starting his own fitness studio.
Isaac Godsiff has founded NZ Fitness, and is operat-ing out of his Dillon Street home.
The Marlborough Boys’ College old boy has come back after spending three months studying with MAX Fitness College in Albany.
He completed a diploma in fitness and business, graduating in the top one percent.
His first day was on Mon-day.
Isaac’s studio focuses on functional weight loss training, which will include nutritional advice as well as the exercise.
Isaac says he worked in forestry after leaving Marlborough Boys to save money for his move.
“I was working in forestry but I wanted to do some-thing more.
“I knew what I wanted to do, but it was a matter of getting around to doing it and making it work.”
He says he has spent most of his first week market-ing the business, and was hoping has passion and enthusiasm would rub off on potential clients.

her with several broken bones spurred new café owner Glenda Francis-Kundycki to buy her own business.
Glenda took over at Smoove, in the Forum building, on Monday.
She saw the opportunity to buy in November, and says the collision with a log truck nine months ago, which she is still undergoing physical rehabilitation for, gave her a new outlook on life.
“When you text the hubby at 1:18pm to say you’re leaving and you don’t arrive until a week later by plane, it’s pretty scary.
“I always wanted to make
coffee again and this op-portunity came up. I thought ACC was only going so far, and if there was no job at the end it would be a case of ‘see you later.”
Glenda says she looked at other café options, but felt “really good” about Smoove’s potential.
She plans to keep much of the business the same, apart from adding a few more gluten-free options and ex-tending the range of summer products.
Glenda has worked at BP, the old Supervalue and New World since moving to Blenheim from Nelson nearly 10 years ago.

pcMedia has head in the Cloud

A parade at the Blenheim Cenotaph on Thursday 15 January 2015 marked the occasion of the first of one hundred days on which the last post will be sounded at 1800 hours (6:00 PM) and the names of six Marlborough men and women, who made the ultimate sacrifice as the result of wars or conflicts since the Boer war in 1899, will be read out from the Marlborough Roll of Honour.Poppies were laid for each name read out. This ceremony will continue every evening until ANZAC Day, 25 April 2015. The New Zealand and Australian ensigns will also be flown at the Blenheim Memorial for the 100
days from 15 January. The public are invited to participate each evening. Positive ageing - ask questions before choosing a rest homeIt is sometimes difficult to know what questions to ask when looking for a rest home for an elderly relative. The choice may depend on the level of care required and the availability of a bed or a room. But Consumer NZ says certification audits show that rest homes do not always meet all the required criteria.Consumer has a rest home checklist setting out the sort of questions you should ask, covering such things as staff levels, facilities and extras, and hidden costs. Consumer also compiles a list of rest homes which have had complaints investigated by the Health and Disability Commissioner, Ministry of Health, a district health board or coroner. Council sends out rate invoices about five weeks before the payment due date to give ratepayers plenty of time to post their cheque payment, if that is their preferred method of payment. Danger zoneMy partner was coming home from work 6pm-ish, coming down Old Renwick Road at about 80kmph when bang a guy in his rental ford doesn’t stop at the STOP sign on Jackson’s Road smacked straight into him. Lucky my brother in-law was still here, our car was a write off, what is up with people not stopping at the STOP sign. How many people have to be hurt and killed before someone cuts that hedge down?
Tourist driversRe Wed Sun 21 Jan, Richard Gatchell, agree with tourists having to know basic road laws. We have to hold a drivers license, why can’t tourist drivers have equivalent of a NZ learners license? See MP Stuart Smith defending tourist drivers, its our citizens dying on the roads as tourists don’t know what they’re doing. V. Annoyed driver.
MRI building! What a debacle. The designers, architects surely did their homework on such EMFs for such a building and if the council experts did not spot the faults then what are they quali-fied for. It is the good folk who put up with this medical scientific data design muck up!. More money wasted on council consent and new designs. Marlborough District Council Biosecurity staff are asking for reports of the invasive vine known as Moth Plant (Arauja sericifera). Moth Plant is a vigorous evergreen climber that will grow up to 6 metres high and originates from tropical South America. It spreads by wind-borne seeds that are released from pods as they dry out and split during autumn and winter. Moth Plant will smother native species and is a problem in gardens where it can become the dominant species. The plant is poisonous and its sap has an irritant effect on contact with the skin.
Moth Plant is recognised as a weed in California, South Africa and in Australia. Moth Plant infestations exist throughout the northern half of the North Island and localised infestations exist in the southern North Island and in Marlborough. There are a number of small isolated infestations of Moth Plant in Marlborough.
Moth Plant is categorised by council in its Regional Pest Management Strategy as a ‘total control plant pest’, this means that the council takes responsibility for the control of this plant. Every summer during February and March while the plant is flowering council staff inspect and destroy all plants on 259 properties where Moth Plant has historically been found. As seed from moth plants is wind-borne it is capable of dispersal over long distances, this means that the council needs assistance from the community in reporting any sightings of Moth Plant.
Public vigilance is the council’s best tool in discovering new infestations of Moth Plant in Marlborough, in fact, the Regional Pest Management Strategy requires land occupiers to notify the council of the presence of Moth Plant on their property.
For identification refer to the photos here, some distinctive features of this vine are white to pink flowers 15 to 30mm wide with 5 petals, tough elongated heart shaped leaves with wavey margins and fist sized green pods. If in doubt snap a leaf off, Moth Plant will exude a white milky sap from the break.

WINZ FAIRNESSI am on a benefit and would like to work but unable at present, I went to WINZ cos I have to find a lot of $ in the next 2 weeks to get school uniforms and books, plus my car fixed for warrant & the dentist, but got declined for any of it, I left there really upset and depressed. I have no idea how I am going to find the $. I don’t drink or smoke and have no luxuries. so why do you hear of people getting help from WINZ with lots of things? doesn’t seem fair. I would like to know how people survive and get bills paid on the benefit.

Pack watchersKaikoura Pack watchers. A new crime venture in the town, 4 young europeans just 1 day off the plane for 3 months in our fine country and sights. Some low life took one backpack as she waited leaving her standing in only shorts & t shirt. Do the decent thing and return to I site police, her clothes are too small for you anyway!

'Dare to Believe' will be visiting Blenheim on Mon-day, January 26 to host an 'extra-ordinary psychic evening' at the Scenic Circle Hotel.
What Jeanette loves most about coming to Blenheim, she says, is the positive feedback and energy from the audience.
"Personally I love coming to Blenheim, the energy is very grounded and practical and the results of the healings I do are remarkable," she says.
One of the most signficant for Jeanette was where the healing energy was photographed throughout the whole evening, showing spiritual phenomena.
"I take photographs now at all of my shows but the ones from Blenheim really stand out.
"I have a whole sequence of photos that are extraordinary. One lady felt her head being pushed back, she was then moved out of the chair and made by the spirit doctor to bend forward - her body was completely in the control of the spirit doctors.
"The movements enabled her to release painful energy that was trapped in her back," she says.
Through her live shows, Jeanette says she shares an insight into the afterlife, while passing on meaningful messages from loved ones with details that only their nearest and dearest could know.
"The intent is to bring comfort, closure and resolu-tion," she says.

runners are likely to cause the most stir prior to the running of the Pelorus Classic for the four-year-olds at Blenheim’s Waterlea Racecourse today.
Tiger Tara will have his first start since November’s New Zealand Cup where she finished sixth behind all-conquering mare Adore Me.
Dunn says Tiger Tara will have no trouble adjusting back to race mode after a long layoff.
“He’s had three trials and has been really impressive so we are very happy.
“He’s had three trials… and while we would have liked to have started him before this (race) but we had a wee hiccup but he should be very good.”
The horse is part-owned in Marlborough by John Gould.
Stable mate Venus Serena looks to be a major player in the $40,000 race as she backs up from a North Island victory in her last start.
The Pelorus Classic winner will also receive automatic entry into the A$200,000 Chariots of Fire to be held in Sydney on March 1.
Though there are only six horses in the first for the feature race on day one of the two-day Marlborough
harness racing carnival, there is plenty of quality.
The Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen-trained Isaiah will carry a great deal of respect from New Zealand’s top stable.
He has won his last three starts and was a strong performer at New Zealand Cup Week.
Dunn says up-and-comer Te Kawau prepared by Stephen Doody was a threat to watch out for.
Today’s racing will also see the running of the Peter Yealands Wines Cup Prelude which is a dress rehearsal for the Marlborough Cup on Sunday.

I’m licensed to fly a helicopter, rated to fly a Robinson R22. I feel safer flying these days than driving on the road.

The More FM Raft Race is just over a week away, so if you want to be involved, now is the time to start working on your creation.
The event in on Sunday, February 1, departing from the Beaver Road Bridge on the Taylor River at 2pm, and finishing at the Amphi-theatre.
Registrations for the race will be taken between 12:30 and 1:45 on the day.
All rafts must be homemade, with no motor.Prizes will be given on the day.

Campbell were both involved in the New Zealand teams at the Youth Trans-Tasman Touch event in Sydney over the weekend.
Campbell’s under-19 team re-corded one victory and two defeats, but Newman’s team lost all three games.

Deflating allegationssports talk
At the weekend the finalists for Superbowl XLIX were found in differing circumstances.
The defending-champion Seattle Seahawks came from 16 points down at halftime to pip the Pack-ers in overtime, while the New England Patriots thumped the Indianapolis Colts 45-7 to join them for the big day in Arizona on February 2 (NZ time.)
While the Seahawks have been praised for their brave comeback the Patriots have been dealing with cheating allegations.
The team has been accused of providing deflated footballs, which would make it easier for star quarterback Tom Brady to throw and for their receivers to catch.
The Colts would have effectively been using different balls because while the home team provides them, both sides are responsible for maintaining their share.
The Patriots are prior offenders, and maybe that is why the allega-tion has made so many headlines. In 2007 the team was fined for taping hand signals from the op-position coaches.
Sporting deception focuses strongest on doping and pre-game match fixing, but other schemes are not often as focused on. De-flated footballs are far from the most ludicrous accusation ever levelled in professional sport, and the examples are far from limited to the following:

The Renault team has since admitted to the conspiracy.

The lengths to which sportspeo-ple will go for a win or that big payday cannot be underestimated.

Eastern States Speedway driver Scott Alexander has spent the past two weeks preparing for the Picton ITM NZ Saloon Champs 2015 which kicks off with to-night’s qualifying rounds.
Scott, former stockcar driver has had a few seasons off speedway driving a rally car, a Hayabusa powered Toyota Starlet.
This season he is back driving a C4 Corvette saloon car purchased from Auckland last year and will be racing under the number 77e.
The car is owned by Scott’s brother Tim Alexander, who is also a former stockcar driver and an Eastern States Speedway committee member.
The pair joined forces last year to rebuild the Corvette in Scott’s shed at his home in Renwick, with the idea of competing in the NZ Saloon Championships on their home track.
The engine is a 355 Chevrolet V8 built locally by Graham Morrison of Midwest Motors, and puts out around 500 horsepower.
This has been a big learning curve for Scott, going from a stockcar which involves full con-tact, to a non contact class such as
the saloons.The thrill of being able to hit
with a stockcar is replaced with the power of a saloon, Scott says.
“It’s a big difference between 240hp in a stockcar versus 500hp with a saloon.”
The difference between the stockcar he previously raced, to the saloon he competes in tonight is considerable.
“The difference in horsepower,
and running race type suspension and race tyres instead of the road types and car type suspension on a stock car makes a huge differ-ence,” he says.
With only having had limited race meetings in the car to get to grips with the massive changes required in both driving style and race rules, Scott knows he has a tough qualifying night ahead.
“Even just qualifying tonight
will be tough, so I will be concen-trating on that as a goal.”
If successful in the qualifying rounds and he makes it through, Scott will be giving it all he has to be at the front of the pack.
