Catholic Education Week 23–29 July 2017

Catholic Education Week is being celebrated across Queensland this week.

This annual event is held to promote the special ethos of Catholic schools and to highlight the great things that take place in Catholic schools every day.

The theme for this year’s celebrations is: Sharing the Journey.

Catholic education strives to make a difference in the lives of those in our schools and in the wider community by challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of society.

During Catholic Education Week 2017, Catholic education communities across Queensland are invited to celebrate how they are sharing the journey.

There are 302 Catholic schools in Queensland that educate around 146,000 students and employ more than 18,500 teachers and staff, and most will celebrate Catholic Education Week in some way.

Our school is planning to celebrate this important week by attending a whole school mass this coming Friday July 28. All members of the St Brendan’s Primary School community are invited to attend this mass and celebrate with us.

Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) Privacy Policy Update

Our school takes very seriously its obligations regarding the privacy of information which the

school collects about students and parents. The BCE Privacy Policy and BCE Collection Notice have recently been updated, as a result of amendments to the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). The updated Privacy Policy can be found on our school website and the BCE Public Website. The BCE

Collection Notice Form is included in the enrolment forms used by the school.

Staff Change

Our School Guidance Counsellor, Mrs Caroline Vakaci has been seconded to Brisbane Catholic Education office for the next four weeks.

Last week, we welcomed Mrs Kely Lapworth to replace Mrs Vakaci during her secondment.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Mrs Lapworth to St Brendan’s and wish Mrs Vakaci well with her new appointment. We look forward to welcoming Mrs Vakaci back to St Brendan’s at the end of her secondment period.

Term 3 school fees will arrive at all postal addresses in the next week or two. Could you please attend to the payment of these fees as a matter of priority? St Brendan’s Community Bash News

Our annual school fete meetings are certainly ‘ramping up’ and as always there is lots to do and talk about. The following information is very important:

Don’t forget to keep bringing in soft drinks and plant stall items – we are still in desperate need for both of these items.

Snap lock bags were sent home yesterday and are to be filled with items that would be suitable for prizes on fete day – each time a bag full of prizes is returned to school the children will get a lollipop and a raffle ticket for $20 to spend at the fete – the cheap shops (eg. Reject Shop, Overflow, etc. are really great places to purchase these kinds of prizes).

Multi-draw raffle tickets will be sent home today – please read the accompanying letter explaining how the raffle will work and what you are required to do.

5c Challenge begins next week (ie. Monday July 31) the winning class will receive a pizza lunch on Friday, August 11.

Don’t forget to keep bringing chocolate blocks and bars to school – the winning class will receive 1 hour

Fete meetings are a regular occurrence now. The next fete meeting is scheduled for this Saturday July 29 at 11.30am – I look forward to seeing as many people in attendance as possible. Again, I offer my sincere thanks to Patrick Shine, Angela Simpson and Ashish Chadha for leading those in our community who continue to be so committed to delivering a successful event. It’s not too late to offer your help – please call the school office if you are able to help.

St Mary of the Cross MacKillop Day – August 8th

Our whole school will be travelling by bus to St Pius X school to celebrate Mass with the other children and Fr Dan at 9:30am (please note the time change). We hope you might be able to join with both schools on this day to thank God for the example St Mary of the Cross shared with us.

We thank Brisbane Christian College for donating these busses for us to use for free.

Parish Sacramental Program

Several of our children have enrolled in the Parish Sacramental Program and are working through their booklets with their families at home. If your children missed the enrolment evening they will need to postpone receiving this sacrament until next year. We pray for the children of our parish who will receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit through at their Confirmation on Saturday, August 12th.

Ignite Conference 21-24 September. “Come – and see the wonders of God.”

Each year the Archdiocese celebrates the youth of our diocese and holds a very successful and engaging series of talks and activities for young people. Book Club - Due 28th

July

Scholastic Book Club Issue 5 brochures were given out to the oldest in the family in Week 1 of the term. Parents can order directly online or send in paper orders with payment to the school office. Allow 1-2 weeks from the due date for delivery.

To order: Fill in the order form in the brochure. Pay by cash, cheque or credit card (by phone). Put order form and payment/payment receipt in an envelope and submit to the school office.

PREP: Star Student - Benjamin Embleton In Prep we celebrated NAIDOC week with some Dreamtime stories and learning the meaning of the parts of the Aboriginal flag. In Religion, we have been learning about the Creation story and thinking of different ways we can celebrate and look after God’s creation. In Science, we have started looking at how objects move.

YEAR 1: Star Student - Ava McGiffin In R.E., Yr 1 has been learning about Baptism and how it means belonging to the church community. In English, Yr 1 is reading fairy tales. They have already read Jack and the Beanstalk and have completed many learning activities to help them engage with the text. They even planted their own bean seeds and are keeping a diary of what happens as the plants grow. In Maths, Yr 1 is learning to skip count by 2s, 5s and 10s. They are learning to identify representations of one half. They are also learning to use counting on as a strategy for addition. Yr 1 enjoyed spending time in the front garden last week. They planted pansies, petunias, daisies and geraniums to make a carpet of flowers, just like they read about in Rose Meets Mr Wintergarten. Yr 1 can’t wait to see how they grow and how pretty they will look.

YEAR 2: Star Student - Isabella Shine The Yr 2 students have been learning about the properties of 3D shapes and how to tell the time to the quarter hour. They have also started looking at the different parts that make up an information report. They are doing detailed reading of an information report about dragonflies.

YEAR 3/4: Star Student - Leonardo Romero The Southern Stars have started the term with a bang. All new exciting opportunities: Dance with Liz, Gardening with Carmel and getting ready for Book Week with Mrs White. Each sentence needs a noun and a verb. A better sentence has more information, in the form of an 'adverbial phrase'. Technology meets maths as we use Scratch to prove Symmetry. Of all the Europeans to discover parts of Australia, why was it the English that settled in The Great Southern Land first?

YEAR 5/6: Star Student - Jackson Burnham Already we have completed a lot of work by week 2 and we cannot believe we are up to week 3 already. In Religion, we are studying what it means to be a good Catholic by understanding why saints are important, studying people who saintly work today in Australia and investigating prayerful practices that sustain us on the right path to God. In English, we are reading, writing and speaking many types of reports. In Maths, we are delving into the wonderful world of Algebra, Transformations of 2D shapes and later in the term, time – if we have time. In History, we are investigating what means to be a good citizen by creating values for citizenship in Australia. In Science, we are lighting up our world by investigating electricity. Health is all about what a healthy Australian should be and finally we love our Art, PE and Music lessons.

St Brendan’s Community Bash 2017 Update 4

It is hard to believe that the St Brendan’s Community Bash (Sunday 27 August 2017) is now less than 5 weeks away.

The success of the St Brendan’s Community Bash relies on the generosity and support of people by way of donations of good

quality items that can be used for prizes and sold on our stalls. Thank you to those who have already made a contribution to our

event. Please keep more items coming over the next couple of weeks. Donations can be brought into the school office.

The official start time of the Community Bash is 9am, however some stalls (coffee van, café, cake and sweets) will be open a little

earlier to cater for people coming from the 7am mass at St Brendan’s Church.

The rides will start at 9am and run until 2:30pm. The application forms for the wrist bands will be sent home soon. The cost for

the rides will be: -

Pre-purchased wrist band is $30 per person

Wrist band purchased on the day is $35

Individual ride tickets are $5 per ride

The wrist bands give unlimited use of the rides, however please note that the wrist bands, when purchased are not transferrable

and are un-refundable. Pre-purchased wrist bands will be sent home on the Friday before the Community Bash (i.e. 25 August

2017).

The Wild Encounters Reptile show will operate from 9am to 12pm. You will be able to hold some of the reptiles and/or be photo-

graphed (using your own device) holding them. The cost to hold and/or be photographed with a reptile is $4 per person per rep-

tile or 3 for $10. You can have a photograph with a reptile as a family or group. There is no cost for the Wild Encounters Reptile

show, other than if you want to hold and/or be photographed with a reptile (or 2). All money generated from photographs will go

towards the funds raised from the fete.

There will be an opportunity for the young and the young at heart to have a half face painted. The cost is $5. Miss Renee f rom St

Brendan’s OSHC will be organising the face painting stall. Parents, teachers, stall convenors are all invited to have their face

painted.

Thank you to the many people and businesses who have donated prizes for our multi -draw raffle and silent auction. We are

putting together a great number and variety of items. The multi-draw raffle tickets will be going home to families very soon.

There will be 10 tickets in each book at a cost of $2 per ticket. All money collected from sold tickets needs to be handed in to the

school office leading up to the Community Bash or they can be delivered on the day. If you want more tickets to sell, please see

the school office.

Families will also receive about 25 x A5 size flyers promoting the Community Bash. It would be appreciated if families could put

these into letterboxes in their street or surrounding streets as a way of promoting and creating awareness of our event. Families

should receive the flyers in the week beginning 14 August 2017. Perhaps a walk around your local neighbourhood on Ekka

Wednesday would be a time this could be done!

A request has been made with the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service for a Fire Engine to come to our Community Bash. Details

of this are unconfirmed at this stage and any update will be provided closer to the day.

On Sunday 20 August 2017, a working bee will be held to clean up and start to get everything ready for the big day. The working

bee will commence at 8:30am. Many hands make light work, so if you have a couple of hours to spare on that Sunday morning,

your help would be greatly appreciated.

The set up day is Saturday 26 August 2017 and it will commence at 8am. There are lots of jobs to do to get everything set up ready

to go for the following day. If you are able to lend a hand, it would be greatly appreciated. Angela Simpson will be Site Manager

on that day, so please make yourself known to Angela and she will be able to give you a job to do.

The entertainment program is currently being finalised. The school children are working very hard on their performances. Th e full

entertainment program will be announced closer to the event.

Rick Sheehan will again be the MC (ie. Master of Ceremonies). You will hear lots of announcements and updates about what is

going on around the Community Bash from Rick during the day.

The more people who attend the St Brendan’s Community Bash, the more atmosphere will be created and a better day will be had

by all. Please feel free to invite grandparents, members of your extended families, relatives, friends and neighbours to St

Brendan’s Community Bash. Any past pupils of St Brendan’s are more than welcome to come back to St Brendan’s on the day too.

The excitement is building! More updates to come.
