Survival Column
Hector G. Holm wrote a column called Survival. The theme in his
arti-cles were based around awareness, preparedness, and
self-preservation and include subjects like alert-ing farmers about
biologi-cal warfare that can “si-lently infiltrate our farm lands,”
building a bomb shelter in case of nuclear attack, and how to stay
alive in a fallout area.
VFW And The American Legion
The VFW in Keene had a Christmas Dance over the holidays in 1961
with a performance by George Ray’s Orchestra. A Gala New Year’s Eve
Party was held at the American Legion that same year.
Admittance was $4 per couple and Allen Kendell & his
Orchestra performed.

nor’easter was a signifi-cant winter storm that impacted the
Mid-At-lantic and New England regions of the US. It was the second
of three major snowstorms during the 1960–1961 winter.

A notable person who grew up in Surry was Amos Pollard, who was
the chief surgeon and defender at the Alamo. He died during the
Battle of the Alamo on March 6, 1836.
