Rev. Gregor Gorsic, Pastor (815) 886-4165 ext. 317
My dear family of St. Andrew the Apostle!
I have my own personal “bucket list.” Now the negative way to describe it is “a list of things that one has not done before but wants to do before dying”…. I like the more positive definition: “a number of experiences or achievements that a person hopes
to have or accomplish during his/her lifetime.” So this past vacation time which I spent with part of my family in Slovenia gave me a chance to fulfill a great desire of mine during my life, namely, to climb up onto the mountain called Mangart on the border between Slovenia and Italy, in the Julian Alps. I DID IT!!! It was the last major peak in Slovenia I wanted to reach — from now on, it’s all gravy, as they say! Of course, there are many, many peaks that I have not yet climbed in
Slovenia, but all the top ones that I desired to reach now I can say I have reached! I took a total of 4.31 Gigabytes (GB) of data in the form of pictures and short video clips, so, of course, I can only share with you a tiny window of my time in beautiful Slovenia. Numerous visits of family relatives and friends — for instance I went to visit a classmate of mine from the seminary when I studied in the capital city of Ljubljana for one year, and he is now the Pastor of the parish in Dobrnič where the first Bishop of Marquette, Michigan, Bishop Frederic Baraga, was born and baptized. I was present when another classmate of mine was installed as the Rector of the Cathedral in Ljubljana. I saw numerous cousins and their families and children. I made a couple of short pilgrimages to two popular Marian shrines in Slovenia. We even had a day at one of the Slovenian beaches, taking along with us the priest who witnessed the marriage of my parents a little over 50 years ago! How grateful I am to God for another opportunity to strengthen the bonds of connection with my relatives in Europe and with my parents and our whole family! What a great blessing life is, even with all its ups and downs. I am grateful for the ways my parents worked out their struggles and challenges, and I wish all couples would find in God the strength to overcome any and all obstacles in their way. Today let’s continue with our reflection on Marriage, its reality and its beauty, and our call to be Marital First Responders wherever and whenever we can be. This is our sixth installment, and we’ve looked at the difference between “hard” problems (the “Triple A”: Abuse, Affairs, Addictions) and “soft” problems (everything else and they are the most common reasons for divorce, e.g., problems like growing apart, money, sexual problems, parenting differences, arguing a lot, etc…). Hard problems, you recall, immediately threaten the marriage and so need immediate intervention and help, most of the time by professionally-trained counselors. Soft-problem marriages are not as immediately threatening but are the most common cause of divorce. These are also the most common avenues that help YOU BE A MARITIAL FIRST RESPONDER! So now, let’s look at how best to be helpful to those of our family and friends who are feeling a crisis in their marriage: in other words, how best to listen, to give emotional support, to give a helpful perspective, to understand what were/are their own contributors to their marital problem, to understand where their partner is coming from, etc. A short way of remembering a very good approach is the acronym L.E.A.P., that is, LISTEN first, then EMPATHIZE with them, then AFFIRM the strengths and capacities of the troubled person confiding in you, and then offer PERSPECTIVE. This approach will give you the most helpful ways to respond to people in troubled marriages – not to over-react to the “soft” problems and not under-react to the “hard” problems – to empathize without necessarily agreeing with the other person’s perspective. We begin with “L” (listen). LET THE PERSON TALK! Best not to interrupt or offer your perspective too soon. Listen for feelings — mad, sad, scared, hurt, frustrated, worried, confused — and don’t get caught up in the details of the story, like who said what to whom and when. Don’t jump to conclusions, especially on “soft” problems; be aware that you are hearing one person’s side, and only what that person is choosing to tell you. REMEMBER, research suggests that couples with problems wait an average of six years before getting professional help. In the meantime, they talk to their friends, to family members, to coworkers, and to people they trust at church, like YOU. How these people (YOU!) respond can have a profound effect on the future of the marriage. The most important thing is by listening, empathizing, and affirming, you LET THE PERSON KNOW YOU CARE! Let us continue opening our hearts to learn more and more and so grow into being the best Marital First Responders God calls us to be! Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us!!!
In the loving Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Fr. Gregor

Mass for Healing with Father Jim Cur n, Pastor of St. Dennis Church & The Roamin’ Catholics Healing Ministry Team
Saturday, September 9 at 5:30 pm
St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church
Why does healing occur? Healing occurs because we have a loving Father in heaven who wants His children, us, to be whole and healed. He wants His kingdom to be here on earth; a kingdom of peace, healing and holiness. Healing occurs if we are obedient to the scriptures which tell us to lay hands on the sick, and that when prayer is said in faith the person will be healed. Our faith is the key! Believe that before we receive healing prayer that God wants us healed, and God will ALWAYS heal us in some way.

MYTHS AND TRUTHS
The following are myths about divorce, annulment, and remarriage in the Catholic Church. (Please note the word annulment is commonly used jargon, but the proper church term is declaration of nullity.)
MYTH #17
If a marriage is declared null, remarriage is always
allowed in the Catholic Church.
TRUTH
If a marriage is declared null due to a possibly ongoing cause, a second marriage obviously
cannot be permitted until it has been shown that the cause which nullified the first marriage has
been eliminated. If the marriage is declared null and there are no restrictions concerning
remarriage, the usual procedure of preparing or marriage in the Catholic Church may be started
with the local parish priest.
WATERLEAF “BABY BOTTLES
FOR LIFE”
SEPTEMBER 9TH AND 10TH In September St. Andrew the Apostle will be participating in a special fundraiser to promote and further a Culture of Life within our parish and local community. Waterleaf provides practical help; pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, STD testing and treatment as well as continuing education and support for women in our community who would otherwise be at risk for choosing abortion. Last year with the support of churches like St. Andrew the Apostle, Waterleaf served 789 clients, performed 521 pregnancy tests, 343 ultrasounds and rescued 60 babies. Baby bottles will be distributed to parishioners after the Masses on September 9th and September 10th to take home and fill with spare change, cash, a check or a prayer. Bottles can be returned the weekends of September 16th and 17th, 23rd and 24th, and 30th and October 1st. There will be a basket in the vestibule of Church where you can leave them. This fundraiser is a great way for each member of the family to help in building a Culture of Life. Thank you in advance for your response to the call of the Gospel to serve those in great need! May Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of His Mother, Mary, bless and protect you and your loved ones!

We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen.
GRANT ETERNAL REST, LIGHT AND PEACE TO ALL FAITHFUL DEPARTED Please call the parish office by Monday at (815) 886-4165 x301 for the name of your loved one to be placed for 3 weeks on our short term prayer list. Also, please call the parish office, if you are hospitalized and would like a visit from our hospital ministry team or homebound and in need of communion.
Hospital Visitation of Parishioners Please remember that if you or any family members find yourselves in a hospital, be sure to let them know you are a parishioner at St. Andrew’s — it doesn’t hurt to say it a few times, either! Whenever we priests, deacons or Eucharistic Ministers come to visit, we check the hospital list of parishioners printed under “St. Andrew.” But if you’re not listed as a parishioner of St. Andrew, we won’t know you’re even there! We do not want to miss you! You can always call us, too, at the office, (815) 886-4165 ext. 301. Thank you. May the Lord Jesus be with you all your days, to love and be loved by Him, to honor and serve Him, as He honors and serves us!
A COMMUNITY OF WORD AND SACRAMENT SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION
CATECHUMENATE The Catechumenate is a community which gathers those adults who have not been baptized, and seek deeper insight into the Christian faith.
BAPTISM OF CHILDREN
We joyfully celebrate the baptism of children of Christian households which are joined to our weekly worship, and have active registration in our parish community for at least 3 months. After registration in the parish, please attend an Evening of Awareness, if you have not attended a class in the past two years, to register for Baptism and select a date. Classes are presented on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Baptism is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m.
EUCHARIST AND CONFIRMATION
Formation for those coming first to the table of the Lord as children is infused into the efforts of our school and Faith Formation Office. Confirmation formation is a two year process completed in eighth grade. Please call the Faith Formation Office for more information.
SACRAMENTS OF COMMITMENT
MARRIAGE
Marriage preparation is a six month process of prayer, reflection and study. Couples work with both the presider and a sponsor couple through this process. Please note that this six month period of preparation is essential.
ORDERS
Those seeking assistance in discerning a call to ordained ministry are encouraged to call the parish offices.
SACRAMENTS OF HEALING
RECONCILIATION Reconciliation is available each Saturday afternoon, 3:00pm, Wednesday evening, 5:45-6:45pm, through seasonal communal services, and by appointment.
ANOINTING
Anointing of the Sick is offered through seasonal services, and always by request. If hospitalized, please immediately seek anointing from the Catholic chaplain. I would like to have my house blessed.
Please contact me to make arrangements.
