22 nd Markham Scout Group November 16, 2015 Volume 2, Issue 03 Welcome We would like to welcome Nicholas Lo (Company) and Brian Wang (Pack) who joined our big family. Acknowledgement Thank you Mr. Raymond Lum, retired Second Lieutenant from 48th Highlanders Canadian Armed Forces, for sharing his story with us at our Remembrance Day Ceremony on November 7, 2015. House Keeping – Safety Winter is coming. To ensure everyone’s safety, all youths must bring indoor shoes to wear during the meeting. Outdoor shoes and winter jackets should stay with child if their parent needs to leave the meeting facility, in case their child is required to go outside during the meeting. House Keeping – Scout Uniform All youth should complete uniform with scarf during all ceremonies and regular meetings. The Pack Scouts should wear navy blue pants, the Troop, Company and Crew Scouts should wear tan pants. Scout Popcorn Popcorn, crest and order form are ready for pick up on November 21, 2015. Thank you to everyone who participated in this annual fundraising event. Christmas Party 2015 We are busy planning our Christmas Party on December 19, 2015. If parents are interested in helping organize the party, please contact Scouter Christy. Details will be announced soon. If you have any further queries about our program or activity, please do not hesitate to send email to [email protected] . Nature's Classroom – Night Hike 2015 We will go to an adventure journey from 19:00 to 20:30 on December 5, 2015. Youths will have an opportunity to explore the York Region Forest at night along with a Forest Education Specialist. Everyone will have a chance to enjoy a quiet moment in the nature and feel it with their ears. This outing program is related to Observer, Naturalist, Hiking and related badges. Registration Deadline is November 28, 2015. Since the Night Hike program will begins at 18:50. We will either finish the meeting early at 17:30 or cancel it. Please help us to conduct a simple survey to determine if the regular meeting should be cancelled. Result will be announced at the end of the November 28 meeting or through email. Winter Camp 2016 Winter camp at Camp Samac, Oshawa will be held from January 15 to January 17, 2016. Campers will learn winter safety and some basic winter survival skills. Register before December 12, 2015 and receive the early bird discount. Remembrance Day Ceremony (Recap) Our Remembrance Day ceremony took place at Markham Wesley Community Service Centre on November 7, 2015. The purpose of the ceremony is to help the children to better understanding of what the Remembrance Day is. Remembrance Day Parade on November 8, 2015 (Recap) 13 members of the 22 nd Markham participated in the Richmond Hill – Remembrance Day Parade. Here is the parade party formed by five York Headwaters Area scout group together.

► Shop for Scout program

You spend thousands of dollars every year on groceries, gas, clothing, dining out and much more. Now imagine being able to turn that spending into funds raised for our scout group. When you purchase retailer gift cards through the Shop for Scout website, a percentage of your purchase will go to our group to support program development and activities. ► Parenting Workshop – Winter Survival Workshop We had ten parents participated in our last parenting workshop on “House Chore and Child Development”. We would like to invite parents to attend our upcoming workshop on “Winter Survival”. It will be held during our group meeting on November 21, 2015 (4:15pm-5:30pm). The workshop is free of charge. Donations are welcome to support program development and group activities.

► First Aid with CPR Level C (at MWCSC)

We are planning to organize an in-house First Aid Course conduct by St. John Ambulance. This is a 2-days intense training program; it targeted to youth leaders age 14+, volunteers and parents. For those who complete the training and pass the test will receive First Aid Certification. A minimum 16 participants are eligible for discount rate. The course fees are calculated based on the number of participants. We know for sure it is less than $140 (regular rate) per person. Please inform Scouter Christy if you are interested to take this course.

► YHW - Howlers Day 2015

Four Pack members were selected to attend the leadership training workshop on November 7, 2015. They had a lot of fun for participating in various team building activities.

► Evergreen – Trick or Trees Planting Event

There were 15 members participated in this event. Our team helped to plant over 200 trees in two hours. Way to go 22nd Markham!

Volunteer’s Corner

► YHW – Scouter Club

Scouters in York region will get together once a month to discuss issues, share program ideas and enjoy gathering. The next Scouter Club will be held on November 29, 2015 between 7:00pm to 9:00pm at Thornhill United Church.

► YHW – Snow Safety and Winter Camping Workshop On Nov 21, 2015 (from 09:00-13:00), Scouter Bernard and Scouter Henry will show us skills, gears and safety knowledge, so that we will have an enjoyable time during winter camping.

► YHW – Song and Craft Workshop This 4 hours workshop will provide scouters as opportunity to discover songs and craft ideas which benefits to Beaver and Pack sections. Workshop will be held on January 30, 2016

► YHW – Adventure Smart (Hug-a-Tree and Survive) On April 02, 2016 (from 09:00-13:00), Scouter Henry will demonstrate how to prepare and conduct a survival workshop which focuses on lost prevention. Participants will receive a certificate from the “Search and Rescue Canada”.
