Welcome to the Tecumseh Council University Catalog. You will find that we offer a variety of Boy Scout, Cub Scout and General Scout classes as well as full‐morning opportunities for intense courses for adults and youth. For additional information on any offering, please don’t hesitate to email us at [email protected]. OUR STAFF The Tecumseh Council University instructors and staff are top‐notch! Many have logged extensive hours of training and over 95% are Wood Badge trained. They come from packs, troops, crews, districts, and council and bring "real world" Scouting experiences into the classroom. WHO SHOULD ATTEND Youth interested in Den Chief Training or Youth Leadership Training. Tiger Cub Den Leaders, Wolf & Bear Den Leaders, WEBELOS Den Leaders, Pack Committee members, Cubmasters, parent helpers, Assistant Scoutmasters, Scoutmasters, Troop Committee members, Venturing Leaders, District volunteers, Commissioners, and any other people that have an interest in learning in-depth information about BSA programs. TCU will offer something to every adult volunteer no matter what your experience level may be. COURSE SELECTION When you pre-register, you can tailor your course schedule to fit your needs. You have up to five (5) time periods to fill. A list of the courses offered is enclosed. Note that most of the courses are offered more than once, but a few are only offered one time. FOOD Breakfast: Doughnuts and Coffee will be provided in the morning upon arrival. Lunch: Each participant may bring a sack lunch or for an additional $5, pre-order from one of the meal selections listed below. Payment must be included with your registration. There will be a limited al-a-carte menu at the event at an additional cost. FEES $15 per participant youth or adult REGISTRATION Registration materials are enclosed. Complete the registration form and return with your payment to Tecumseh Council no later than December 18, 2010. Registrations received after will be an additional $5. No refunds will be given.

NEW THINGS AND NOTES: COMMISIONER TRAINING VENTURE TRAINING YOUTH LEADER TRAINING- FOR YOUTH SCHEDULING AND REGISTRATION Some of the classes may have a student limit. Individual class assignments will be made on a first come first serve basis. To help you get the classes you want, we encourage you to sign up early! Special Note to Den Leaders - Do you understand how to use a Den Chief and work with them? If not, then we encourage you to attend the Den Chief training course. Special Note to Scoutmasters - Do you need additional leadership positions for your Boy Scouts to serve in? If you'll help us find the Scouts, we'll train them. This is the best tool that you have to ensure a successful transition of Cub Scouts into your Boy Scout Troop. Den Chiefs build relationships with these Cub Scouts and will be your salesman - telling the Cub Scouts all about the fun and adventure that awaits them in Boy Scouting.

SCHOOL OF BOY SCOUTS BS001 HIGH ADVENTURE This course will address key topics involved in the planning, coordination, and execution of high adventure activities in troops and/or venture crews. Emphasis will be on BSA High adventure bases - Philmont, Sea base, Northern Tier, and the NEW Bechtle SUMMIT. Participants' experiences and lessons learned are welcome. BS002 LIFE TO EAGLE Explores the process of successful advancement through Scouting for Boy Scouts from Life Rank to Eagle Scout. BS003 OPPORTUNITIES BEYOND YOUR UNIT Beyond your unit are further positions that support the Scouts and leaders at levels such as district, and council. They work along with professionals to enhance the overall Scouting program and experience. This course looks at these positions especially the commissioners’ role in the district and council. BS004 SCOUTMASTER/ UNIT LEADER MINUTE As you've probably noticed, boys aren't willing to sit still and listen for very long. Scoutmaster's minutes are usually very brief. They often occur near the end of a Scout meeting, but a good Leader will find that the best times for these lessons sneak up on the boys. Maybe a reflective moment during the silence following an early sunrise hike, or in the solemn minutes after a campfire program, learn when and where to use

a Leader’s Minute and discover resources to get you started. BS005 TROOP ADVANCEMENT Will cover details required to run a successful Troop Advancement Program within the Boy Scout unit.

SCHOOL OF CUB SCOUTS CS001 CUB SCOUT DERBIES Whether it is a pinewood derby, space derby, or rain gutter regatta… races are fun for your scouts. Learn successful methods to plan an effective, exciting event including scheduling, organizing and budget writing. CS002 CRAFTS This course will share great ideas for making crafts out of simple everyday items with emphasis on themed and holiday crafts. Includes, How to use the NEW Den and Pack Meeting Resource Guide to make crafts for any den meeting. Never be at a lost to make something creative as a craft. Class will also cover neckerchief slides and much, much more! CS003 MESSY SCIENCE MESSY SCIENCE is an opportunity for leaders in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, or anyone interested in science and having fun! We will explore ways to have fun with science using basic household items. We will be making things you can eat, launch, decorate, and yes ways to get messy! Participants will have enough supplies to have fun in class, receive handouts of the activities we will be doing, and a resource list of where to find more fun and messy things to do! Class size is limited to 12 per class! CS004 PACK ADVANCEMENT Will cover details required to run a successful Pack Advancement Program within the Cub Scout Unit.

CS005 PINE WOOD DERBIES SUPER ADVANCE Now that you know how to run a pinewood derby, visit with our expert instructor as he gives tips on ways to help the boys get more involved in making their own fast car. The course will help the Down and Derby Dad let go and put the car back into the hand of the boy.

GENERAL EDUCATION OF SCOUTING GS001 “3 R’S” RECOGNIZE, RESIST, REPORT Whether its youth protection, bullying, or some other aspect of danger to the youth in our unit there are tools that we can teach our Scouts. The "three R's" convey a simple message that the BSA wants its youth members to learn that can help protect them and create a safe-haven. Learn ways to introduce and promote this message throughout Scouting. GS002 A SCOUT IS REVERENT "A scout is reverent. He is reverent toward God. He is faithful to his religious duties and respects the convictions of others in matters of custom and religion." Learn how to introduce the aspect of the 12 point of the Scout Law as well and encourage the earning of Religious Awards in your unit, what all is involved for the boys and adults in your unit. GS003 CEREMONIES The important thing about ceremonies is that you have them! Opening ceremonies, closing ceremonies, Rank ceremonies, special awards, whatever. Simple or elaborate, just have them. Learn where to get ceremonies, how to use props and costumes, how to design your own ceremonies. Learn the power of a single candle. GS004 COOKING Demonstration of skills to use a Dutch oven and charcoal to prepare any food that can be cooked in an oven. Equipment demonstration, recipe handouts, techniques for judging

temperature, and care of cast iron cookware will be part of the demonstration. GS005 DISABILITY AWARENESS AND AD/HD SCOUTS Scouting has a place for every young man who wants to develop his character and strengthen his leadership skills. We will discuss both BSA policy and practical steps for making your unit a place that welcomes Scouts and their families with disabilities. The aims and methods of the Scouting program make it an outstanding opportunity for those with AD/HD characteristics to develop and enhance the skills that can lead to success in school, in relationships with others, and in life. This training block focuses on explaining these characteristics, demonstrating the challenges and opportunities they provide for Scout leaders and scout parents, guiding them in developing strategies for supporting Scouts with AD/HD, and enabling them to assist Scouts in getting the most out of the Scouting program. GS006 DUCT TAPE, KNIVES, AND FIRE WOW! All the things that the Boys love to play with at a campout or any Scout outing. Learn things to do with Duct Tape, Knives, and Innovative ways to introduce Fire to your Scouts. The course will also briefly introduce the need for safety and supervision for your youth with these exciting tools.

GS007 ELECTRONIC MEDIA Get engaged in the new age of media. See the NEW Council Web Site and experience the resources that are available to units online. Investigate resources and guidelines for use of phones, I-pods, and other electronic devices to enhance the Scouting experience. Earn your MEDIA-CHIT Card. GS008 FINANCE FUNDRAISING (POPCORN) Financial management is an important aspect of ensuring a unit remains viable. This training session will cover unit fundraising ideas and will showcase new ways to increase popcorn sales. GS009 FIRESIDE CHAT THE SCOUT EXECUTIVE Jim Nolan, Tecumseh Council Scout Executive will hold an open forum and conversation about Scouting in our Local Council as well as the National Level. GS010 GAMES SONGS AND SPORTS FOR ALL AGES Need a little something to add to your meeting to get people excited? Need a small energizing activity to get your Scouts and their families moving around and having some fun? Learn techniques to make meetings fun with games songs and sports. GS011 GEOCACHING Geocaching is an entertaining adventure game for Scouts of all ages. It is a modified treasure hunt using GPS coordinates to locate the “prize” or cache. There are numerous public geocaches hidden around your community, probably very close to

where you live. Learn about Geocaching as a team building activity for your unit and incorporating other outdoor skills (for all age scouts). GS012 KNOTS Learn the knots of Scouting from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts and beyond…Knots are a skill taught at every level of Scouting. Knots are frequently a foreign subject for new leaders. However, taking the time to learn them will serve you and your Scouts as well on campouts and other occasions. Learn teaching techniques to teach knots to your scouts. GS013 LEATHERWORKING Learn while doing in this introduction. Our major focus will be on leather stamping. You'll make a project to take home with you. Leatherwork can be a fun activity for your den. There is a Boy Scout merit badge on Leatherwork too. Supplies are provided. GS014 NATURE This is not your normal nature class. The instructor will help you with ideas to keep the outing in Scouting. Go on a hike with our naturalist as he shows techniques in teaching nature to your Scouts. This class will encourage any level leader to slowly take steps into teaching nature to your Scouts.

This course is intended to “train the trainer” on behaviors and resources while offering hands-on experience in methods and media.

GS015 OUTINGS ON A BUDGET (A SCOUT IS THRIFTY) “A Scout works to pay his way and to help others. He saves for the future. He protects and conserves natural resources. He carefully uses time and property.” Learn tips on keeping your outings inexpensive especially for those youth that need the program the most. GS016 PROGRAM PLANNING An active, busy unit is the one that keeps their youth and draws new ones in. We all can always learn to do new and different things. Join us to pick up new ideas to keep your unit active, involved and fun for your youth. Come and share your ideas and listen to others as they do the same with coming up with a yearly plan for your unit. The ideas that are to be shared will work both for troops and packs. GS017 TEAM BUILDING GAMES Scouting is the Game with a Purpose and is key in the Scouting program. Building teamwork through games is a great way to develop communication, leadership, and character. Learn team building games, how to effectively run games, keep games age-appropriate, work standard games into monthly themes and STILL HAVE FUN! GS018 TECHNIQUES FOR INSTRUCTORS (DEN LEADERS,MB COUNSELORS, ETC.) Learn basic teaching and instructing techniques for all age Scouts. Come check out new ways to get your youth engaged in learning something new and develop ideas of how to make almost anything more hands on.

GS019 YOUTH MENTORING This course will offer ideas of mentoring youth in the Scouting program. It will also include ways to get your youth involved in mentoring younger Scouts and encourage the safe-haven that is expected.

WOOD BADGE is the most advanced training available for Scout Leaders who are involved in the programs of the Boy Scouts of America. The aim of Wood Badge is to make Scouters better leaders by teaching advanced leadership skills.

SCHOOL OF SPECIALIZED TRAINING DC001 DEN CHIEF TRAINING A Den Chief is a Boy Scout that serves as an assistant to a Cub Scout Den Leader or WEBELOS Den Leader at den meetings. Boy Scouts that attend Den Chief Training will learn what their responsibilities will be when they serve as a Den Chief. This training will also help participants perform as a qualified youth leader to their den of Cub Scouts. NOTE: This is a three (3) session class beginning during the first period. You may sign up for additional courses offered in the afternoon. The registration fee for this course is $15.00 -which includes the Den Chief Handbook and trained patch upon completion. YLT01 YOUTH LEADER TRAINING- FOR YOUTH Youth Leadership Training is an experience for Scouts in support of the Unit’s responsibility for the training of Troop and Crew youth. Built on the legacy of past JLT successes, this course will introduce and integrate the best of modern leadership theory with the traditional strengths of the Scouting experience. Through activities, presentations, challenges, and discussions, youth participants will be engaged in a unified approach to leadership that will give them the skills and confidence to lead well. NOTE: This is a three (3) session class beginning during the first period. You may sign up for additional courses offered in the afternoon. The registration fee for this course is $15.00 UC001 COMMISSIONER TRAINING Commissioners are district and council leaders who help Scout units succeed. They coach and consult with adult leaders of Cub Scout packs, Boy Scout troops, and Venturing crews. Commissioners help with charter renewal plan so that each unit reregisters on time with an optimum number of youth and adult members. This session will contain topics related to unit visitation and helping units succeed, as well as basic roundtable administration. Topics covered will help you to fine tune your skills for helping units provide a successful program. NOTE: This is a three (3) session class beginning during the first period. You may sign up for additional courses offered in the afternoon. VC001 VENTURE LEADER TRAINING This course will provide Advisors with an introduction to the purpose and mission of Venturing. Your instructor will cover characteristics of Venturing-age youth and provide an orientation on how to organize a crew. You will learn how to plan an annual program, how to train crew officers, and cover the details of the Venturing advancement program. NOTE: This is a three (3) session class beginning during the first period. You may sign up for additional courses offered in the afternoon.
