A great deal haschanged, in fact, alot more than youmight think, at first glance.Firstly, the couple’s friends, family and acquaintances areconfused as to why they gotdivorced in the first place, given that nothing has reallychanged in their eyes. However, there is a majorchange in the eyes of the stateand federal governments, employer retirement plansand the tax treatment of anyformer spouse beneficiaries of any life insurance policies andannuities. This change is a

really big deal, indeed!Whether or not this cou-

ple resides under the sameroof, they are legally no longermarried in the eyes of the lawand no longer entitled to thetremendous spousal benefitsat the death of the first spouse.IRA’s allow for a non-taxablespousal rollover that disap-peared with the divorcedecree. A non-spouse, namedas the employer’s 401k or pen-sion plan beneficiary, will nolonger enjoy the right to roll-over the proceeds of theaccount into their name tax-free. Ex-spouses can no longerroll-over the proceeds of anon-qualified tax-deferredannuity without paying tax onthe deferred gains in theaccount.

Ex-spouses can no longertake advantage of spousal dis-counts in the purchase of along-term care policy. Ex-

spouses may lose the pensionbenefits of their formerspouse’s pension plan due totheir divorce as well, whetherreceiving benefits currently orat their ex-spouse’s death. And if married less than a cer-

tain period of time anddivorced, they might losespousal Social Security bene-fits as well!

State and Federal EstateTax rules allow for the tax-freepassing of assets between

spouses; this too would be lostupon divorce. This one itemmay trigger the largest loss tothe survivor of the former

married couple. These are but a few of

the items that change when acouple gets divorced and forall intents and purposes, remain “married” as wasbefore. There may be a lot at

stake that perhaps the attor-ney forgets to mention whenfirst approached by a marriedindividual looking to discussdivorce.

Upon a divorce, employ-er retirement plans usually

result in a negotiated settle-ment to the non-employeespouse called a Quadro, theacronym for a Qualified

Domestic Relations Order. For couples that remaintogether yet get divorced, thiscould very well be a bitter pillas the benefits offered by thecurrent plan may not be sur-passed or duplicated in an

IRA or the recipient spouse’semployer 401k plan. This isone serious area that might beconsidered when contemplat-ing divorce, if the future is tobe that the couple remaintogether.

Then there are the legalexpenses incurred by bothparties to consider. If there isno big, glaring, overwhelming

reason or many reasons to getdivorced and after consideringthe points brought to light inthis column, maybe planninga divorce should be post-poned, if the couple desires toremain together as a coupleanyway.

Divorce rate statistics arevery high in our society. Justask any school age child howmany of his or her peers par-ents are divorced and thenumbers may frighten you.Let’s also not forget the cost of duplication, the purchase of another home and everythingthat goes into it from pots and

pans, sheets and towels, furni-ture, utility bills and propertytaxes too. After contemplat-ing everything involved, youmight even find your spouse alittle more agreeable to liveand work with. If not, youmay always remain friends orfriendly as the case may be.

Divorce is much morethat a legal battle; it has con-sequences of taxation, incometoday and tomorrow as well asquality of life. In my career,I’ve counted more than a fewcouples who were former mar-ried couples now livingtogether, with caring feelingsfor each other that would bebetter served in the futurewhen one passes if theyremained married. The goodnews is for a few dollars and

an appointment at the court-house, they can marry again.Let me know your

    thoughts by writing or email-

ing me at the contact infobelow. For those that dodivorce where the thought of remaining a couple would beout of the question, a meetingwith a financial advisor maybe just as important as themeeting with the divorceattorney. To that end, I makemyself available and with nocost or fee.

Finding ways to relax canimprove life at home and

at the office. While it’snot often easy to find time toslow down, especially for thosemen and women juggling theresponsibilities of career andfamily, the following are somesimple techniques that don’ttake much time but can have apositive impact on your day.

Take some time out frommultitasking. The ability tomultitask is a cherished com-modity for parents and workingprofessionals alike, but menand women can benefit fromperiodic breaks from theireveryday juggling acts.Something as simple as focus-ing on a single task for 30 min-utes at a time, as opposed tochecking emails while prepar-ing dinner or working on aproject while answering a

client’s phone call, can helplower stress levels and have alasting and calming effect onyour nerves.

Make time to meditateevery day. Studies have shownthat meditation can affect thecircuitry in the brain, position-ing it to more adequatelyrespond to illness and stressfulsituations. Meditation has theadded benefit of being a relax-ing exercise, as meditationencourages people to sit withtheir feet on the floor withboth eyes closed in a relaxingsetting that is free of externaldistractions.

Walk away from your deskand couch. It’s well document-ed that spending too muchtime sitting at a desk can havea negative impact on your

health. In addition to elevatinga person’s risk of heart diseaseand diabetes, sitting at a deskall day long has been linked torepetitive stress injuries, obesi-

ty and back pain, each of which can

contribute to stressfulliving conditionsthat make it difficultto relax. Men andwomen should spendat least five minuteseach hour walking, whether they are get-ting up from theirdesk at work or get-ting off the couch athome. Doing so takeslittle time, but it canhelp to relieve stressat work and at homeand improve youroverall health.

Practice yoga. Yoga isanother activity that can helpmen and women relax. Yogainvolves a series of poses thathelps stretch the muscles and

aid their recovery from every-day aches and pains, includingthose that often result fromstressful experiences or days atthe office.

T ake a deep breathbefore responding toany communicationabout your tax return — and

verify that the query is actuallyfrom the IRS. Why the needfor caution? The contact maybe from a bogus IRS agent whointends to steal your financialidentity.

The scam can take manyforms and often starts with anofficial-looking e-mail com-plete with IRS logo that warnsyou of a problem with yourreturn. To correct the situation, you’re instructed to click on anembedded link. The link sendsyou to a website that asks aseries of personal questions.Answers you supply can beused to file fraudulent taxreturns or extract money fromyour bank accounts.

Another tactic is a phonecall from a fake IRS agent

demanding information.Sometimes the phone call willfollow a recent e-mail intendedto make the communication

seem legitimate. The callermight even know the last fourdigits of your social securitynumber.

Here is what you need toremember: The IRS will neverinitiate contact with you by e-mail.

How can you stay safefrom scams? If you receive anout-of-the-blue e-mail purport-ing to be from the IRS, do notclick any link or reply in anyway. If you receive a phone callabout your tax return, do notprovide any personal details.Simply note the caller’s infor-mation and disconnect.

Whether you’re contact-ed by e-mail, phone call, orstandard mail paper notice, please call our office immedi-

ately. We’ll help you determineif the communication is real —or not — and guide you on thebest way to respond.

W hich of course means mostly women will read this. Sowhen your wife, girlfriend, or significant other handsyou this, read it guys. It could save your life and yourrelationship.

Look, I’m 58, I’ve been receiving chiropractic adjustments for a longtime. I haven’t had the need for any medication in forty years orso. And I sure as he** don’t need any stinking Viagra or Cialis. Andneither do my male patients who have been getting regular adjust-ments, and some of them have 15 and 20 years on me!

This is simple guys, it ain’t rocket science. Everyone knows that

your brain runs your whole body. That means everything. You knowyour spinal cord delivers the mes-sages from your brain to your bodythat tell your body to do what youwant it to do and need it to do. If those messages don’t go throughyour spinal cord 100%, then yourbody isn’t working at 100%. Thatcould mean heart problems, highblood pressure, stomach issues, orother parts that don’t do their job.

Things don’t work right because the messages from your brainwhich are supposed to tell your body how to work are not goingthrough your spinal cord completely. Picture an electric circuit witha dimmer switch that is turned down part way.

Look, your back might not hurt. But neither do all cavities. Yourspinal bones can be subluxated, which means that your spinalbones are twisted, pressing on your spinal cord, slowing down mes-sages to your body parts. Having spinal subluxations does notmean your back will hurt, but it does mean that your body partsare not getting messages they need in order to work properly.

Having subluxations in your spine can be causing all kinds of bodyparts to malfunction. It could mean back pain, high blood pressure, heart problems, indigestion or kidney or liver problems or lowblood pressure in some parts when you need them to have highblood pressure (a.k.a E.D.)

Get your spine checked guys. Spinalsubluxations can cause all kinds of health problems. Do it for yourself.Do it for the beautiful person who gotyou to read this.

H umans are not theonly animals thatmay get a bit pudgyaround the middle and tip thescale in the wrong direction.Man’s best friend also may puton some extra pounds, neces-sitating a workout plan to getback into shape.

According to theAssociation for Pet ObesityPrevention, 53 percent of adult dogs in the UnitedStates are classified as over-weight or obese by their vet-erinarians. Yet, pet owners aresometimes unaware that theirprized pooches are over-weight.

Overweight dogs andcats face some of the same

health risks as overweightmen and women. Musculo-skeletal problems, such asdegenerative joint diseases,

and back problems have beenlinked to obesity, as haveheart disease and respiratoryproblems. Diabetes and heat

or exercise intolerance areother side effects of beingoverweight.

But a pet’s weight is not

the lone indicator of howhealthy the animal is, and theideal weight can vary fromdog to dog. A body conditionscore is helpful in determininga pet’s ideal body weight. Some indications a dog maynot be at a healthy weightinclude:-a belly that hangs below the ribcage area-a belly that moves when the dog moves, unless the dog is preg-nant or has just given birth-inability of the owner or vet to

feel the dog’s ribs in the rib cage-a waddle of skin on the neck of dogs where excess skin isn’tindicative of the breed-no visual indication of dog’swaist

-inability of the owner or vet to feel the bones near the base of the tail-a less active lifestyle, including avoiding exercise and play-excessive panting

Keeping a dog in shape isone of the best things you cando for your pet. But what if your dog already has packedon a few unnecessary pounds? It’s time to start a canine fit-ness routine and follow someother guidelines.•Talk to your veterinarian.Obesity could be the result of eating too much or inactivity,

In the United States, reno-vation spending has morethan doubled since thelate 1990s, reaching nearly$65 billion last year alone.Oftentimes the investment ahomeowner makes is substan-tial, both financially and emo-tionally. The stakes are high. That’s why it’s imperative that

the job is done well from startto finish. There are a numberof steps a homeowner can taketo ensure a positive experi-ence and a successful out-come, including:1. Know your goal. Ask thequestion, “What is this reno-vation designed to accom-plish? More functionality?

Storage? Living space?” If ahomeowner doesn’t knowwhere they’re going with therenovation, chances arethey’ll never get there.2. Do your research. In mostthings, knowledge is power, and knowing what to expect,in advance, can keep expecta-tions in check. Investigate

options, budgets and time-lines, and arrange financing inadvance.3. Hire professionals. Be surethat they are happy to workwith you to meet your budgetand achieve your vision.Communicate clearly andoften to ensure understandingon both sides.

    4. Opt for a general contrac-tor and trades that areexperienced, licensed andinsured. Don’t hesitate tocheck credentials and refer-ences. Get recommendationsfrom family, friends and col-leagues who have had workdone and were satisfied withthe results.

    5. Start with quality buildingmaterials. When it comes tohome renovation and con-struction, the adage, “it’swhat’s on the inside thatcounts” seems apt. Whilehomeowners tend to getcaught up in the aesthetics of a project, such as finishingsand paint colors, the key to a

successful renovation oftenlies in what you won’t see.Investing in quality behindyour walls will ensure durabil-ity, comfort and safety foryears to come.6. Focus on the basics. Thisincludes quality electrical, plumbing, HVAC, framingand drywall. Don’t underesti-

mate the importance of insu-lation - especially in a base-ment renovation. Not allinsulation is created equal.Opt for insulation that is fire-resistant, sound absorbent andresistant to mold, mildew, bacterial growth, and rot. Inmy renovations, I like to

use products like Roxul’sComfortbatt and Comfort-board IS to help achieve amore energy efficient home, buy you valuable time in theevent of a fire and preventmoisture issues that can posehealth risks and lead to costlyrepairs.7. Develop a good plan. Thisincludes preparing for the

unexpected. Setting aside a 20percent contingency fund willhelp bring you to the finishline when unanticipatedissues creep up.

Lastly, the key to a suc-cessful renovation includespatience. Living in a con-struction zone - or alternatelymoving out while the work isdone - can be stressful and try-ing. Keep your eyes on the

prize. There’s nothing morerewarding than the end result, which can bring years of enjoyment and ultimately addto your home’s bottom line.

Some insulations can loseperformance over time, sustain damage or simply

no longer meet updated build-ing codes. It’s an issue that canbe costly, because if yourhome’s insulation isn’t doing itsjob, you could be wastingmoney and resources.

You don’t have to be atrained professional to knowyou have a problem. Here are

several signs that your insula-tion is lacking:1. Energy bills - High energybills are the biggest red flag, especially relative to the size, age or condition of the home. If you have a run-away energybill, your insulation may needto be upgraded. This can be thecase, even in a newer home.

    2. Drafts -Do you need to put

on a sweater even with theheat on, or does your air condi-tioner run incessantly withoutmaking enough of a difference? That’s a sign of a deficiency inyour building envelope.3. Inconsistent temperatures -Is it warm in one room, butcold in another? Are your wallsor interior closets cold to thetouch? It’s possible that while

your whole home may not needattention, certain rooms mayneed to be addressed.4. Condition of insulatingmaterials - Consider the age of your insulation. Would it standup to today’s building codes? Isit in good shape or is it crum-bly? If your insulation hasdegraded or isn’t performing,

it’s time for an upgrade. But becareful, as certain types of olderinsulation, such as Vermiculiteinsulation, may containasbestos. If you’re unsure, donot disturb it and hire a profes-sional to conduct testingand/or removal. This shouldnot be a do-it-yourself job.5. You detect pests and/ormoisture - Insulation - andyour building envelope - can

be compromised by the pres-ence of pests. Moisture is aneven bigger obstacle to opti-mal thermal performance, assome types of insulation cansag or collapse when damp, leaving voids and causing airto flow in and out of thebuilding envelope.

    While some solutions

may be more complicated, requiring the opening of theexisting wall cavities, otherscan be addressed more easily. The best way to improve ther-mal performance and increaseenergy efficiency is to upgradeattic insulation. LayingComfortbatt insulation overexisting material to achieve aminimum depth of 16 inches,or an R-value of R50, is a sim-

ple DIY project that can gener-ate immediate results. To fullyassess your home and exploreremediation solutions, consid-er hiring a professional homeenergy auditor to evaluate yourhome’s energy performance.Even in a new home, theresults may be surprising.

but it also can be a sign of aserious condition. If a routineexam and blood work comeup normal, then you canbegin a plan for helping Fidoshed the weight.•Consider a new food. Thereare many different types of foods on the market, includ-ing low-calorie options. Somefoods contain extra fiber tohelp the dog feel fuller with-out having eaten as much. Also, look for foods with leanprotein sources without grainsand other filler.

•Break up the feedingschedule. Instead of onelarge meal a day, feed yourdog two or three smaller por-tions of food, which will helpkeep his metabolism going

    all day long.•Become joint joggers.

Jogging with a dog canbecome an enjoyable pastimethat enables you both to getexercise and stay in shape.•Take up swimming. Manydogs are natural lovers of water, and swimming is aneffective, low-impact exercise.•Teach your dog tricks.Physical tricks, like fetching aball or rolling over, can keepdogs active.•Go for long walks. to home. Smaller parks maynot have every attraction, butthey do boast a variety of activities and rides that cankeep children occupied forhours. Remember that amuse-ment parks reach peak capac-ity when kids aren’t in school. It may be wise to vacation atoff-peak times to avoid thecrowds and save time spentwaiting in line.

Choose places of culturalimpact. Family vacations donot need to be limited to rid-ing roller coasters. Children

can learn a lot and take awaylasting memories from vaca-tions that open children’s eyesto something new. Visiting alarge city, such as LosAngeles, New York, Chicago,or Atlanta, can be a vacationin education. Metro areasboast attractions that canexcite children, including tallbuildings, museums and pub-lic transportation hubs justwaiting to be explored.Families venturing interna-tionally may want to see thecultural centers of Rome,London or Athens.

Consider a family resort. If a beachside adventure isyour family’s idea of the per-fect retreat, explore youroptions with regard to familyresorts. For an all-inclusive

price, these resorts may couplefood packages with accommo-dations and activities to keepfamilies happy. Check withpopular hotel chains to see if they offer all-inclusive pack-ages in destinations your fam-ily wants to visit. Parents whoare pressed for time often findall-inclusive resorts offer greatvalues and don’t involve toomuch advanced planning.

Go off the grid. A mem-orable family vacation doesnot have to be spent in theheart of it all. Booking a

campsite location and thenspending a few days in thegreat outdoors allows familiesto get back to nature whileenjoying an inexpensive vaca-tion. Families can camp inlodges or basic cabins, orrough it outside in a tent. Some families enjoy the bene-fits of renting an RV and visit-ing various campsites on theirvacations. Let the activitiesunfold as you explore differenttrails and backroads along theway.

Family-vacation seasonis around the corner. No mat-

ter where travelers end up, theultimate goal should be tohave fun, experience some-thing new and spend qualitytime together with lovedones.

    the refrigerator 1½ hours beforecooking.

Prepare and light a char-coal grill for direct cooking.

Add the olives to the aioliand season with cayenne.

When the grill is at itshottest (when the coals are redand glowing and it’s too hot tohold your hand over the grillfor more than a couple of sec-onds), remove the tri tip from

the marinade, wipe off anyexcess marinade, and season onboth sides with sea salt. Placethe steak on the cooking gratedirectly over the coals, coverthe grill, and cook, turningonce, for about 20 minutes, oruntil a thermometer insertedinto the thickest part reads 130F for medium rare. Transfer to a

cutting board and let rest for 5to 10 minutes.

Cut the tri tip into thinslices across the grain and

arrange on a platter. Serve withaioli.AioliMakes about 1 cup

1 small clove garlic½ tsp kosher salt1 tsp Dijon mustard2 tsp fresh lemon juice2 egg yolks1 cup olive oil

To make by hand, chopthe garlic and salt together ona cutting board until a pasteforms. Transfer to a deep mix-ing bowl and wrap a damptowel around the base of thebowl to keep it from sliding

around the counter as youwork. Whisk in the mustard, lemon juice and egg yolks. While whisking continuouslyand vigorously, add the oliveoil in a slow, thin, steadystream until all of it has beenincorporated and the mixtureis thick and completely emul-sified.

To make the aioli in afood processor, place the garlicand salt in the work bowl andprocess to chop as finely as pos-sible. Add the mustard andlemon juice and pulse to com-bine. Add the egg yolks and, with the motor running, add

the olive oil in a slow, thin, steady stream until all of it hasbeen incorporated and themixture is thick and complete-ly emulsified.

Cover and refrigerate forup to 24 hours until needed.

For the past 40+ years, if you ask local residentsabout Century 21 CrestReal Estate, you will mostlikely hear of the exemplarytreatment they received whenpurchasing their home here inPequannock/Pompton Plains. But there is another story youmay also hear....one in which

a group of giving and generousindividuals who care aboutthe communities they serve.

The professionals atCentury 21 Crest Real Estatehave been volunteering theirtime and giving generously tovarious Township andCommunity programs fordecades. To honor these pro-

fessionals, Owner/BrokerPatricia Wojtyszyn has estab-lished the “Crest Gives Back”initiative. “I have been proudof the generosity of this groupof professionals for years.“Crest Gives Back” gives usthe opportunity to acknowl-edge their altruistic endeav-ors.”

Whether it be flag plant-ing along the Turnpike forMemorial Day, servingThanksgiving Dinner at NewBridge Services or volunteer-ing at Grains of Hope andRelay for Life. In addition tosupporting Township athletes, the Pequannock ValleyRotary, Boys and Girls Club,

the local FBLA chapter, andhelping out local families inneed, Century 21 Crest RealEstate has been there throughthe years. “The bottom line isthat we really care about ourcommunity. When you thinkabout it, it makes sense. Weare in the business of helpingpeople realize their dreams of

home ownership. We reallyget to know these people—they become friends, and theyare important to us.” saidMarie Episale, Broker/Manager.

Recently, over a dozenCentury 21 Crest Real Estateagents and their families vol-unteered their time to pack-

age meals for PequannockGrains of Hope, an organiza-tion that addresses worldhunger by providing food tothose in need. This year’sevent benefited Haiti and the

New Jersey Food Bank. Theevent was introduced toCentury 21 Crest Real Estateby real estate agent, Addie

Scattaglia. When asked whythis event is so importanto her, Addie responded,“Everyone who gets involvedwith this event comes awayfeeling that it was very worth-while, and knowing that theyhave done something to makeothers’ lives a little bit betternow that they have food for

their families. As much as153,600 meals were packed in5 hours, which surpassed ourgoal. It is wonderful to watchour community come togetherto help others. I look forwardto this event every year.”
