Biosolids are an organic amendment available to gardeners.According to the United States Environmental ProtectionAgency, biosolids are carefully treated and monitored residualsformed at sewage treatment facilities. They may be recycled into

fertilizers to stimulate plant growth. Biosolids may help reducethe need for chemical fertilizers. Biosolids can be safe to use, buthomeowners should be cautious about heavy metal content, pathogen levels and salts. Rely on only Class A biosolids, whichhave been treated to reduce the bacterial content and areapproved for use in production agriculture. Home gardeners maywant to avoid biosolids in vegetable gardens because of thepotential for heavy metal content seeping into the produce.

T oo much householdclutter is not onlyunsightly but also cancontribute to a stressful envi-ronment. Children’s toys areoften key contributors tohomes overrun with clutter, but with a growing family andbirthday and holiday giftsstreaming in, it can be chal-lenging for parents to tame toy-related clutter.

Parents who have hostedplay dates know that once thefun ends their youngsters’rooms often appear overrunwith toys. Kids have a funnyknack of taking out every toythey own without putting theirtoys away. But with a few tips,

anyone can conquer the cluttercreated by toys.Take stock of what you

have. Taking inventory helpsto determine which toys canultimately be donated or dis-carded. Look for duplicates, similar items, broken toys, anditems that are seldom used.

Start to organize. Whenyou have everything laid outin clear view, start to divideand conquer. Create groups inwhich to sort the toys. Dollsshould be in one pile, buildingblocks in another and so on.Figure out a system that worksfor your family. You may findthat active, sports-relateditems can be moved to thegarage, while board games andbooks may be moved to a fam-ily room or a community clos-et in the house to free up morespace in playrooms. Seasonaltoys can be stored away in anattic or basement until theyare needed.

Create accessible storage.Toys should be stored wherekids can easily access them.Clear bins are great for stor-age, and such bins come in avariety of sizes. Constructcubbies in the playroom

where these bins can be kept.Be sure they are nearly groundlevel and not too heavy sothat children can easily get totheir toys come play time.

Construct or buy a toychest. A toy chest can houselarger toys and act as a recepta-cle for fast cleanup when kidsneed to tidy up before companyarrives. Such chests are goodfor storing larger cars andtrucks or the hordes of stuffedanimals kids accumulate.

Shelving gets things off the floor. Display collectiblesthat cannot be damaged onshelves. This makes sure theyare still on display but not injeopardy of being mishandledby curious youngsters.

Donate toys kids nolonger use. It can be a toughjob, but children should workwith you to thin out their toycollections. Designate a certainportion of items that need togo. Bring them to a consign-ment shop or donate them tokids in need.

Organizing youngsters’toy collections can be a diffi-cult job, but such organization

is essential to keep a tidy home.

How to conquer the kid toy clutterCrystallized trees and stone cold air;the smell of oak burning and the stillness of a stare. The trees are tall, strong and sure. They scattered the snow like men at war.A sole winters’ red breast sings out his note.I hold myself together by the furs of my coat. The darkness falls; from the moon it flees, while gathered wolves howl at a strange mild breeze. And the whitest winter, so pristinemelts away into an entirely different scene.A golden sun thaws the earth, and my face, it glows with wide-eyed mirth!Trunks, once rigid, now stand at easein sheers of sunlight streaming on snowy eaves. As the forest sheds it’s fleece of snow, every creature comes forth from their winters’ woe.My coat falls from me, and with ready, quick feetI run through the thicket, perfectly replete.

M any dog ownersnever give a secondthought to thehealth of their dogs’ ears.Unless Fido isn’t answeringthe dinner bell, pet ownersmay fail to recognize signsthat man’s best friend is deal-ing with ear trouble.

Though it’s easily over-looked, maintaining a dog’sears is something owners mustdo throughout their four-legged friend’s life. Suchmaintenance is simple, andowners who remember tomake it a part of their dog’sgrooming routine can helpensure their dog stays cleanand healthy for years to come.

    Why must I prioritize ear

maintenance for my dog?The anatomy of dogs’

ears is reason enough for dogowners to make ear mainte-nance part of the groomingroutine they have fortheir pets. The inner ears of dogs are curvy and providemany spots for bacteria, para-sites and yeast to hide andgrow. The winding nature of dogs’ inner ears also can makeit difficult to expel any debristhat enters the ear canal, andtrapped debris can causeinfection.

What are some signs thatsuggest my dog’s ears aren’t up tosnuff?

Much like their owners, dogs may suffer from wax

buildup in their ears. Butunlike humans, dogs who

have wax buildup in their earsmay be coping with micro-

scopic ear mites, which caninfect dogs’ inner and externalear canals and lead to infec-tion if left untreated.

Ear mites can be difficultto see, but the presence of ablack or brown waxy secretionmay be indicative of ear mites.Dogs with ear mites may alsorub or scratch their ears exces-sively, and that behavior canlead to ruptured blood vesselswithin the dog’s ear flap, which will look swollen andcause the dog considerablepain.

Other signs that dogsmay be having problems withtheir ears include redness inand around the ear, swelling, crusty skin, and hair loss. Any

of the aforementioned symp-toms should be brought to theattention of a veterinarianimmediately.

How can I protect my dog from ear troubles?

Simple and routinemaintenance is often enoughto safeguard dogs from eartroubles. Apply a cotton balldampened with hydrogen per-oxide or mineral oil to dirtyareas of dogs’ inner ears. Theskin inside dogs’ inner ears isdelicate, so be gentle whencleaning such areas, even ask-ing your veterinarian to showyou the proper technique if

you are concerned you mighthurt the animal.

Some dogs, not unlikesome dog owners, may grow

hair in their ears. While thehair is relatively harmless, it’sstill a good idea to discuss itsgrowth with your veterinari-an, who can teach you how toremove the hair or even letyou know if the hair needs tobe removed at all.

It’s important that dogowners do not clean theirdog’s ears too often. The skininside dogs’ ears is very sensi-tive, so over cleaning the earscan cause irritation.

When cleaning dogs’ears, dog owners should neverinsert anything inside theirdogs’ ear canals.

Dog owners who let theirdogs go swimming from timeto time should dry the dogs’ears immediately after they

get out of the water. Makesure ears are as dry as possiblebefore letting Fido run off, aswet ears can cause infectionand irritation.

Ears may not be the firstthing dog owners think of when trying to protecttheir pets from potentiallypainful health problems. Butear maintenance should be apart of every dog owner’s dog-grooming routine.

C irca 2000. I’ve failedmany times in mylife. I’ve also hadmany successes. Both ex-tremes have been part of mylife. “The thrill of victory andthe agony of defeat.” I havelived through both.

While victory and suc-cess have driven me forwardto do greater things, I’ve prob-ably learned more from fail-ure. That’s because long ago, Idecided to let failure be mylife coach, inviting it to teachme what I really needed toknow.

Along the way, I decidedthat I would win in life. I also

decided to live a life thatwould make a difference longafter I was gone. I didn’t wantto be someone who livedcomfortably now, but didnothing to make the world (ormy local community) a betterplace. I also decided to helpother men succeed where Ihad failed, and to teach themto be husbands and fathers inways that I wasn’t taught.

    Think about it...

Failure can rob us of whowe can be. It is how we handlefailure that will truly define

us. There is a differencebetween failing and failure. We all fail at some point insomething. But it is we whoallow the label of “failure” tofall on us. When you fail andlearn, you grow. When youdon’t learn it’s because failurehas become a comfortablefriend. You don’t need friendslike that!

A pril 15, the tax filingdeadline for 2014federal income taxreturns, will be here beforeyou know it. If you won’t beable to file your income taxreturn by then, be sure to filefor an extension using Form4868. The extension is auto-matically granted and givesyou until October 15, 2015, tofile your return.

Be aware that an exten-sion of time to file does notextend the due date for pay-ment. Instead, you must esti-mate how much you’ll owe andpay that amount with the

extension request. The IRSwill assess interest on any

unpaid balance. In addition, unless you pay at least 90% of your estimated tax liability byApril 15, you may owe a late-payment penalty.

Even if you can submityour tax return by the April 15deadline, in some circum-stances getting an extensionmight still be a good idea.

For example, say you can’tpay all of the tax you owe byApril 15. An extension willallow you to defer paying partof the balance until October15. As long as you meet theprior-year safe harbor rule orpay 90% of your total currenttax liability by April 15, youshould not be subject to penal-ties on the balance due. Andeven though you’ll owe interest

on the shortfall, the interestrate charged by the IRS may be

less than the cost of borrowingelsewhere.

Are you self-employed? If you need a few extra months tofund your retirement plan fully, you might benefit by filing foran extension. To be deductible, retirement plan contributionsmust be made prior to the duedate of your tax return, includ-ing extensions. By filing Form4868, you have up to six addi-tional months to fund yourplan. Another benefit of filingfor an extension: If you don’talready have a retirement plan, you can use the extra time toestablish a SEP-IRA.

To discuss whether youcan benefit from an extensionof time to file your tax return, please give us a call.

Veins are the thin-walled blood ves-sels that drain de-oxygenated bloodfrom the capillarybeds of the body

and deliver it back to the rightatrium of the heart for pumpinginto the lungs to be re-oxy-genated. Valves in the veins help

maintain blood flow in places suchas the legs where the blood pres-sure has to push blood uphill, against the force of gravity. De-spite the valves, accumulation of blood in leg veins can stretch thethin walls, resulting in varicoseveins. Because the vein walls areso thin, factors like aging and preg-nancy can actually weaken anddamage your veins.

HOW YOUR VEINS CHANGE As you age, all of the blood ves-sels in your body tend to become

less flexible and less elastic. In theveins, this could mean that thewalls expand, but don’t return totheir natural shape.

During pregnancy blood volumeincreases greatly. This can causeveins to enlarge. Plus, pressure onthe large veins behind the uteruscauses the blood to slow in its re-

turn to the heart. For these rea-sons, varicose veins in the legs aremore common in pregnancy.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN VEINSCHANGE When veins expand, the valvesin those veins either become dam-aged, or don’t close properly. Theresult is abnormal backward flowthrough the open valve. This is re-ferred to as venous reflux, which

causes blood to collect, causingveins to remain expanded, result-ing in varicose and spider veins.

This condition can also lead toswelling, skin changes and leg ul-cers in your lower leg and ankles.

At the new ACP Vein Centerwe offer these, and other officebased, minimally invasive optionsfor the treatment of CVI and as-sociated venous issues. To deter-mine if you are a candidate for

treatment, please contact ustoday to schedule a consultation.

Bottled WaterA four-year study by the Natural Resources Defense Council shows that 1/3 of the bottled watertested contains levels of contamination which exceed allowable limits. Bottled water can alsobe slightly acidic, which may affect your body’s pH balance. Finally, the environmental impactcaused by the production and disposal of plastic bottles is harmful to our ecosystem.

Tap WaterTap water is a healthier option than soft drinks and other beverages, but according to theEnvironmental Working Group, there have been 315 pollutants found in America’s tap watersince 2004, and over half of these pollutants are completely unregulated and can legally existin any amount.

Reverse Osmosis and Distilled WaterReverse Osmosis and Distilling are filtering processes, which removes healthy, naturallyoccurring minerals in our water. These minerals not only provide good taste, they also serve avital function in the healthy balance of our bodies. When stripped of these minerals, this waterbecomes unnatural and an aggressive absorber. This can be quite unhealthy. Also, 2 - 3 gallonsof water are wasted for every gallon of purified water produced; again, a very negative impacton our environment and ecosystem.

other areas of the globe as well. The following recipe for“Asparagus & Ham Crêpes”from Lou Seibert Pappas’“Crêpes: Sweet & SavoryRecipes for the Home Cook”

(Chronicle Books) is a versa-tile dish that can be madeinto a vegetarian offering bysimply omitting the ham.Asparagus & Ham CrêpesMakes 8 crêpes8- 6 or 7 inch garbanzo flour orsavory crêpes (see below)1 ½ pounds asparagus spears, cut into 1-inch diagonal lengths1 egg

1 large sweet white or redonion, chopped¾ cup ricotta cheese or naturalcream cheese at room tempera-ture½ cup shredded Gruyére orEmmenthal cheese3 tablespoons grated Parmesancheese2 garlic cloves, minced2 tab minced fresh flat-leaf

Prepare the crêpes.Preheat the oven to 350 F.Steam the onion and asparagus

in a covered container overboiling water until the aspara-gus is crisp-tender, about 5 to 7minutes. In a medium bowl, beat the egg and mix in thecheeses, garlic, parsley, tar-ragon or dill, ham, andsteamed vegetables.

Spoon ½ cup of the filling

in a ribbon down the center of each crêpe and roll to enclose.Arrange in a greased 9-by-13-inch baking dish. Bake in theoven for 10 to 15 minutes, oruntil heated through. Serve atonce.Savory CrêpesMakes 16 to 18, 6- or 7-inchcrêpes2 large eggs1 cup milk

Vacation homes mayseem like a luxury onlythe very wealthy can

afford, but many people pur-chase vacation homes asinvestments. Vacation homesgive families a place to escapeto where they can spend timetogether each summer or win-ter, but such homes also helphomeowners generate income, and some homeowners even

find the height of vacation sea-son generates enough rentalincome to pay for the secondhome year-round.

Personal style goes a longway toward determining howto renovate a primary resi-dence. But men and womenwho own vacation homes theyhope to rent out should not

allow their own personalstyles to dictate a vacationhome renovation project. Thefollowing are some additionalthings homeowners shouldconsider before renovatingtheir vacation homes.Curb appeal: When renovat-ing a vacation property, rela-tively minor updates can dra-matically improve curbappeal, which may bear more

weight with prospectiverenters than it would prospec-tive buyers. Potential buyersare making a substantialfinancial commitment whenthey buy a home, so they willgo over a home with a finetooth comb. But vacationrenters are making a muchsmaller financial commit-

ment, so curb appeal can go along way toward encouragingvacationers to rent your prop-erty. Repaint a home in amore vibrant color or replaceold siding with newer materi-al. Hire a local landscaping

service to tend to the propertythroughout vacation season, and be sure to include updatedphotos of your property withonline listings.Connectivity: While vaca-tion was once a respite from

all aspects of our everydaylives, nowadays vacationerswant to maintain at leastsome connection to the out-side world. If your vacationhome is not up-to-date withits wireless technology, upgrade to a faster networkthat offers high speedInternet. Such connectivitycan and likely will proveattractive to prospective

renters who have grownaccustomed to relying on theInternet, even when they areon vacation.Appliances: A vacationrental may not need the latestand greatest appliances, buthomeowners may find it easierto attract renters (and chargemore in rent) if the home is

not filled with outdated appli-ances reminiscent of a longforgotten era. Upgrade espe-cially outdated appliances, butmake sure any upgrades fitwith the theme of your rental. For example, stainless steelappliances may look great inyour primary residence, butsuch appliances are costly andmay not be what renters hop-ing to find a beachside bunga-

low are looking for.Accessibility: Some peoplewant a vacation home far off the beaten path, but that doesnot mean the home has to beinaccessible. If your vacationhome is in a wooded area faroff the road, consider pavingthe access road prospective
