    Forrest Gump is without

    a doubt one of my

    favorite movies. I must

have seen it a hundred times

and yet still enjoy it. Forrest

was a simple man whose nave

nature led him to make wise

    observations. One of my

    favorite scenes is when Forrest

and Lieutenant Dan are in the

hospital. In a fit of anger Lt.

    Dan, whose legs were both

    amputated, pulls Forrest down

on the floor. Forrest had saved

Lt. Dans life when he was

    wounded, but Lt. Dan insisted

he was supposed to die on the

battlefield just like the rest of

the men in his family had

    done in previous wars.

    Because Forrest saved him he

believed that he was robbed of

his destiny. He ends by telling

Forrest, Look at me. I use to

    be Lt. Dan Taylor. Upon

    hearing this Forrest looks at

Lt. Dan and makes a powerful

    statement, stating the obvious

when he says, You still are Lt.

    Dan.

    We live in a period

    where we, individually and as

a nation, have lost touch with

    our identity, who we really

are! We have gone from a

nation built on We to one

    focused on self. Our enemies

laugh at us and encourage us

    to continue along these paths

for they know that it tender-

izes us and prepares us to be

    consumed. The majority of

the ad campaigns focus on two

    things: fear and greed. The

fear of not keeping up with

    the Jones and the attitude

of greed that says I deserve

    this!

    So whats the answer?

How do we make sense of all

    the noise coming our way?

    When your identity is

wrapped up in what others tell

    While sunning on

    the shore, I started

    counting all of the

    money we were spending on

    our 2014 holiday vacation

    thinking about how are my

four kids going to replicate this

activity with their kids in the

    future. Starting with airfare for

    six and accommodations at a

    magnificent Riviera Beach

    oceanfront resort in Singer

    Island, Florida for 10 days,

renting 2 cars, as one wasnt

large enough for all of us with

the luggage, the cost of feeding

    our brood finalized the calcula-

    tion. The financial planner in

    me, immediately brought my

thoughts to cost and figureswhile my wife counted the

    blessings and memories being

    made.

How will our kids and their

    peers ever afford such a

    lifestyle, one theyve come to

    know, enjoy and anticipate?

    Accumulating a down-

payment for a home while pay-

    ing off student loans, covering

    the monthly rent, paying for

    dating then planning a wed-

    ding, the never-ending car

    lease payments, simultaneous

    to building a professional

    wardrobe for the interviews

and first career job, our chil-

dren will also need to furnish

    their new apartment or home

    while striving to participate in

their companys 401k programassuming they get that higher

paying job to afford to. Next

    come babies, where the word

budget has a whole new mean-

ing. If our daughter or daugh-

ter-in-law decides to be a stay

    at home mom with resulting

loss of income, will they finan-

    cially make it without parental

    help? The figures were con-

    stantly streaming through my

    mind and the conclusions are

not in their favor. Dad will

need to help, in almost every

example I thought of and this

    is under current conditions

    before calculating the effects of

    any emergencies, health issues

    or inflation?

In my 5 decades living in

North Jersey, Ive seen a slice

of pizza rise from .25 to $2.50

and a house from $24,000 upto $350,000 then back down

    to $240,000. Our children will

    see the same inflation increas-

es over the next 5 decades or

    even worse, in my opinion.

    Income taxes have risen pro-

    portionately over the same

    period as well by either

increasing the tax rate or by

    lowering the brackets which,

    push more into higher pay-

    ments. North Jersey property

    taxes have fared much worse,

    rising substantially above the

    inflation rate of pizza and

    housing.

    What are the children of

today to do when they ponder

their career and future? I dont

know about you, but Im grave-

    ly concerned. Ive written in

    this column about multi-gen-

erational families living underone roof with one set of utility

    bills, one mortgage payment

and one less family car. It was

the cycle of life, in the fifties

    and sixties; children were itch-

ing to leave home and get out

    from under their parents to

make a life for themselves! In

    the 21st century, children are

    returning home or arent leav-

    ing, for financial reasons. You

all should be aware that 52%

    of Americans dont pay

    income tax, which means the

    48% that do are supporting

    100% of the populations obli-

    gations. The Federal govern-

ment is broken, NJ is broke,

    counties are broke and local

    municipalities are broke too.

    Government makes no money,

    doesnt produce anything to

make any money, yet, it doesspend a lot of money and even

more money it doesnt have by

    borrowing from future revenue

    streams, borrowing from

    investors, robbing the tax-pay-

    ers of tomorrow and increasing

    taxes on the already overbur-

    dened 48% that pay today.

    Why cant government ever

operate with a profit at the end

    of the quarter?

    Should the American

    family emulate the federal gov-

    ernment and use the credit

card to pay for the vacation or

    should government learn from

    the fiscally responsible tax-

    paying American families that

say if we cant afford it, were

    not going anywhere this year.

Im not so nave, as to assume

    that Americans dont use plas-

tic for a vacation, but, theres amajor difference between a

charge card and a credit card.

    Virtually identical in appear-

ance, those who pay the bill in

full upon its arrival used a

    charge card and those who

    paid anything less, employed a

credit card and will pay infi-

    nitely more than the actual

    charges and expenses, due

    to negatively compounding

    interest.

    Yes, Im gravely con-

cerned for not only my kids

but, for all of todays children.

    Obviously, vacations and new

    cars can be abated during

    tough economic times; but,

    mortgage payments, property

    taxes, homeowners insurance

and food cannot be! All of

    these financial and economic

thoughts ran through my mindwhen receiving a massage on

the beach hoping that one day

my kids will be able to afford to

live the way they live now. I do

    know that they themselves

    arent thinking about it, at

    least not enough as they

    should be. My son Zachary

once said to me, Dad, you had

to think that way when you

    were 18 because you were

    forced to. Your parents got

    divorced, sold the house and

forced you to be on your own,

renting your first house at just

18! You had to buy your own

    towels, dishes, pots and pans,

you paid to buy and repair your

own car and bought your own

clothes. But Dad, I dont worry

    about any of those things,

    because I have YOU!

Guess that makes me anenabler to a certain extent

since my 4 children do have

me as a back-up plan, always.

Alive or dead, healthy or oth-

    erwise, this Dad has prepared

    to always be the financial

back-up plan for his wife and

kids. It is hard for me to sepa-

rate the titles of financial plan-

ner and Dad, I thought to

    myself. Please dont interpret

my column today to think my

    children are spoiled, far from

    it! Privileged yes, spoiled no.

The 2 older ones have their

    own credit cards and resulting

bills, pay for their own cars and

    insurance and have their own

    apartments, complete with

rent and utilities. That is their

choice, as to live home with

mom and dad would cost them

nothing. As a result they stillvacation with their parents

    and younger siblings; Terry and

    I hope that will continue

    indefinitely for more memory-

    making and eventually with

    their spouses and our grand-

    children. Every time we land

    at a different destination

around the world, I still ponder

about the costs for my kids to

be raising a family and building

    a retirement portfolio for

    themselves with the confi-

dence that I have taught them

well and if they fall short or

need a helping hand I will be

    their back-up plan, always.

What a great feeling that I

    hope my entire readership can

and will enjoy, but, only if

    properly planned for. Another

year has passed folks, 2015 is

here. Please ask yourself thesefew questions: Are you pre-

    pared for your retirement? Is

    your retirement plan prepared

for you to draw a monthly

check to last for the rest of

your life and spouses life? Will

    it continue to provide income

    and benefits for your children

    and grandchildren years after

    your departure? Would you

like it to? Would you like your

kids to steal a quote from my

son Zachary, But Dad, I dont

    worry about any of those

    things, because I have YOU!

    How toavoid injury during

    these popular workouts

The risk of suffering an injury while exercis-

ing will never disappear entirely. Even themost seasoned athletes suffer setbacks

from time to time, and even the most popular

exercises are not completely risk-averse. With

that in mind, the following are some favorite exer-

cises and how to avoid injury when performing

    them.

Jogging: Joggers should get adequate rest

between running sessions and wear comfort-

able, well-fitting shoes when jogging. Avoid loose

shoes so your feet dont develop blisters, and ice

your knees after each workout to facilitate their

recovery. Knee and foot problems tend to plague

many joggers, so its important that joggers take

steps to reduce injury rather than telling them-

selves to push through the pain.

Circuit training: Circuit training is popular

because it allows time-pressed men and women

to workout several areas of their bodies in rela-

tively little time. When done correctly, circuit

training is an efficient way to enhance cardiovas-

cular fitness and muscle endurance. Circuit train-

ing participants do not typically do as many rep-

etitions when working their muscles as they

might when working out one muscle group at a

time, and that leads many to lift extra weight.

That can cause damage to the shoulders or other

areas of the body that are engaged as part of

strength training. Such injuries can be avoided

by adding rest to a circuit training routine andtaking more time between exercises. This may

run counter to the point of such a routine, but its

    well worth avoiding injury.

Yoga: Yoga is an increasingly popular exercise

that can improve flexibility and overall strength.

But some yoga participants have suffered wrist

injuries, pulled muscles and hip problems as a

result of their yoga routines. Such injuries can be

easily avoided by reinforcing your wrists with

supports and not overdoing it when you feel your

muscles are tight before or during a workout. If

your instructor tries to push your body into a

position youre uncomfortable in, speak up and

say you want to avoid that position.

Weightlifting: Weightlifting injuries are often the

result of overdoing it with weights or not adhering

to proper form when lifting. When strength train-

ing, dont go overboard with how much weight

you are lifting. Start out with light weights and

then gradually increase the weight until you

reach a figure you are comfortable with. Before

beginning a weightlifting regimen, consult with a

trainer at the gym or read

    your equipment owners

    manual at home to ensure

    you are following the proper

    form for each exercise.

Many men and women struggle to find time

to exercise. If hectic schedules dominated

    by professional and personal commitments

have made it difficult to make exercise part of your

daily routine, you might want to consider skipping

the snooze button so you can work out in the early

    morning hours.

Early morning workouts have their ups and downs. Glucose levels in the body tend to be low in the

morning, when many people wake up with a relatively empty stomach. Low blood glucose levels can

cause feelings of nausea and weakness and possibly make you feel faint. In addition, since you likely

arent moving much while youre asleep, your joints and muscles are likely less mobile early in the morn-

ing than they are in the evening, which can make morning workouts difficult and, if you dont allow your-

self more time to warm up, put your body at greater risk of injury. But morning workouts also can ener-

gize you throughout the day, and many people find it easier to consistently exercise in the early morn-

ings than at night, when distractions or long days at the office can affect your motivation to workout.

Early morning exercise routines can be difficult to adjust to, but there are some ways to make the

adjustment to such regimens go more smoothly.

    Make sleep a priority.

Prioritizing sleep makes it easier to get out of bed in the morning, when you will face the daily tempta-

tion to hit the snooze button and roll over. But if you arent sleep deprived, you will find it easier to skip

the snooze phase of your morning routine and get right out

of bed. Skip the late night talk shows and call it a night ear-

lier, making sure you get between seven and eight hours

of sleep each night. Once you establish a new sleep

schedule, you will find it easier and easier to get up and hit

    the gym in the morning.

Designate more time to warm up. Early morning workout routines require athletes to warm up

more than they would when exercising at other times of the day. As previously noted, your body is per-

haps at its least mobile right when you get out of bed, so set aside more time to warm up when you work-

out in the mornings. Five to 10 minutes of light cardiovascular exercise before you begin your workout

can be enough to increase your body temperature and loosen your body up so its ready for exercise.

Dont go it alone. The buddy system is effective for many people regardless of when they exercise, but

it can be especially beneficial for men and women who want to start working out in the morning. If some-

one is waiting for you at the gym or if your significant other is up and ready to go, youre far less likely to

skip a morning workout than you would be if you are going it alone.

Eat at your own discretion. Some people simply cannot eat before a workout, while others find work-

ing out on an empty stomach makes them faint and weak. The problem many people who work out in

the early morning encounter with regard to eating before their workouts is they simply dont have the time

to eat and afford their body enough time to turn that meal or snack into fuel that will benefit their work-

out. A study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology found that eating a meal 45 minutes before

a moderate-intensity workout enhances exercise capability. But morning exercise enthusiasts typically

find they do not have that spare 45 minutes to wait around while their bodies absorb a meal. Eating

healthy before exercise, and giving your body adequate time to absorb that meal, can definitely fuel yourworkout. But if that 45 minutes ultimately compromises your ability to workout, you may want to have a

glass of orange juice or a drink that contains carbohydrates so your body has

    some fuel as you exercise.

Many adults find that mornings are the only times they can consistently

exercise. Adjusting to such a routine can be difficult, but there are some ways

    to make that adjustment easier.

Caring for a dog is no

    small task. Many dogs

    need daily exercise and

    interaction with their owners in

order to live long and healthy

lives. But as dogs age, the

    responsibility of caring for them

    can become even more

    demanding.

    When a dog begins to

exhibit signs of aging, its easy

for dog owners to assume that

the rigors of caring for the dog

will lessen. But while aging dogs

may not need or want to spend

as much time playing fetch or

walking around the park as they

used to, they often grow more

    dependent on their owners as

    they grow older. Recognizing a

    dogs changing needs and how

those needs relate to caring for

the dog is a responsibility dog

    owners must take seriously.

    Consider altering the dogs

diet. Many aging dogs do not

need as much food to maintain a

healthy weight as they did when

they were puppies or in the

prime of their life. Much of that is

    because aging dogs dont exer-

cise as much as they used to,

    meaning they wont be burning

as many calories as they once

did. So an aging dog thats still

on the same diet it had as a

    youngster might gain weight,

which can lead to a host of

    uncomfortable or even painful

    ailments. Owners concerned

    about their dogs diets should

    consult a veterinarian, who may

    recommend a geriatric diet that

will provide all of the necessary

    vitamins and nutrients dogs

need while reducing their risk of

    obesity.

    Make sure water is acces-

    sible and available throughout

the day. Older dogs are at

    greater risk of dehydration, so

    owners should make sure water

is readily available for the dog at

all times. Aging dogs often strug-

gle with their mobility, so place

    several water bowls throughout

the house so they do not have to

travel far when they need a bev-

erage. Keep a bowl in close

    proximity to where the dog

    sleeps as well.

    Prioritize grooming.

Owners of aging dogs must pri-

oritize grooming for a variety of

    reasons. Regular grooming is a

great way for owners to discover

    any abnormalities, such as

lumps or tumors, on the dog that

might be indicative of a medical

    issue. Any such abnormalities

    should immediately be brought

to the attention of a veterinarian.

    Routine grooming also helps

prevent drying out of the coat

    and skin, ensuring dogs are

    comfortable.

    Dont overlook dental care.

Dogs are known for bad breath,

so while there may not be much

owners can do to make their

aging dogs breathe smell like a

rose garden that does not mean

    pet owners should overlook den-

tal care. Dogs whose teeth are

    clean and tartar-free are less

    likely to develop potentially seri-

    ous medical problems, including

heart disease, which can be a

    byproduct of tooth decay. Dogs

may lose some teeth as they

    age, but owners should still

    emphasize dental care for their

    aging best friends.

Lend a hand to dogs who

    are struggling with their mobility.

    Aging dogs suffering from arthri-

tis may struggle to get out of bed

or climb flights of stairs. When

dogs start to struggle with their

mobility, pick them up and carry

them up the stairs or help them

out of bed in the morning.

    Veterinarians may prescribe

    anti-inflammatory medication to

    ease soreness and pain, but

    owners can take additional steps

to help dogs with mobility issues,

    such as positioning bedding and

food and water bowls so that

    they are more accessible to

    dogs.

    CONTACT

    855-900-VEIN (8346)

    At the ACP Vein Center

    in Wayne, NJ, we

    provide patients with

    the latest technologies

    for the treatment of

    Venous disease. One

of our latest offerings is EndoVenous

    Radio Frequency by EVRF.

    Though Radio Frequency technology is

not new to the treatment of Venousdisease, prior to EVRF, its usage has

been primarily for the treatment of the

great and small saphenous veins. EVRF

technology allows for the expansion of

    treated areas.

With EVRF, blue/red spider veins up to

1 mm, varicose veins from 1.15 to 5 mm

    (collateral, reticular and perforating

veins), as well as great and small

saphenous veins (up to 20 mm

    diameter) can be treated.

The treatment is based on the principle

    of thermocoagulation. Thermocoagula-

tion is the heating of the vein wall

    through radio frequency waves which

    makes the vein coagulate. High

frequency impulses will be sent through

a catheter to make the vein coagulate,

    shrink and disappear.

Prior to EVRF, primary treatments for

smaller diameter veins, such as varicose

    and spider veins included ambulatory

phlebectomy and sclerotherapy. Ambu-latory phlebectomy is a minimally inva-

sive procedure in which a large

surface of varicose vein is removed

through a series of miniature incisions.

    Schlerotherapy involves injecting a small

volume of liquid into the diseased vein.

The sclerosing liquid acts upon the lining

of the vein to cause it to seal shut.

    Temporary side effects of these

    procedures may include: bruising and

    swelling, inflammation, and hyperpig-

    mentation.

    This innovative technique goes further

    than existing techniques. Compared to

    other techniques, thermocoagulation is

    applicable on: all types of varicose veins;

every type of skin; not seasonal

committed; and does not have any side

    effects like hyperpigmentation, necrosis

    or skin burns. Patients experience

    minimal discomfort, and normal daily

activities can be resumed within one day.

For any questions regarding EVRF, or

any of our other Procedure offerings, please contact our office at

Dietary and Lifestyle Changes Without Proper Hydration,Many Unhealthy Changes Occur in Our Cells

One solution can be as simple as dri nking more water. But

what kind of water should we be drinking?

TAP WATERTap water is a healthier option than soft drinks and other bever-ages, but according to the Environmental Working Group, there

have been 315 pollutants found in America's tap water since2004, and over half of these pollutants are completely unregu-lated and can legally exist in any amount.

At the current levels of contamination, the public is starting toquestion the quality of tap water and wonders if it is safe enoughto drink.

    BOTTLED WATER

Bottled water is not necessarily healthier than tap water and yetit costs much more! Bottled water costs more per gallon thangasoline! Although, through marketing tactics, it is associatedwith healthy water, bottled water is not guaranteed to be anyhealthier than tap water. In fact, there are many carcinogenic

chemicals that go into the making of plastic water bottles thatcan leach into the water. Why do you think they constantly tellus not to store bottled water in our cars? Because the plasticheats up, releasing chemicals into the water. Bottled water has

already been heated many times in the 4 to 6 months it takesto reach market.

A four-year study by the Natural Resources Defense Councilshows that 1/3 of the bottled water tested contains levels of con-

tamination which exceed allowable limits. Bottled water can alsobe slightly acidic, which may affect your body's pH balance. Fi-nally, the environmental impact caused by the production anddisposal of plastic bottles is harmful to our ecosystem.

REVERSE OSMOSIS AND DISTILLED WATERReverse Osmosis and Distilling are filtering processes, whichmay be effective in areas that do not receive municipallytreated water and are commonly used in bottled water facili-

ties. Both reverse osmosis and distilling removes healthy, nat-urally occurring minerals in our water. These minerals not onlyprovide good taste, they also serve a vital function in thehealthy balance of our bodies. When stripped of these miner-als, this water becomes unnatural and an aggressive ab-

sorber. This can be quite unhealthy. Also, 2 - 3 gallons of waterare wasted for every gallon of purified water produced; again,a very negative impact on our environment and ecosystem.

    THE SOLUTION

One of the best ways to clean and remove toxins from yourbody is by drinking the right water so the body can heal itself.Everything in the body happens in water. Nutrients, Miner-

als, Hormones and Insulin follow water into the cells.

Find out why tap water, bottled water, reverse osmosis anddistilled water are not the answer and could be actuallycausing more health problems.

We have researched the best water to drink for detoxifyingyour body of these harmful pollutants, as well as removepesticides (toxins) from your fruits and vegetables.

ANTI-OXIDANT, ALKALINE, RESTRUCTUREDIONIZED WATERThis technology comes from Japan and has been used inJapanese homes for decades. It is now available in the USA.

This water brilliantly addresses the Three Stresses that arecausing us to feel and look older, slowing us down, andcausing more aches and pains: Oxidative Stress, AcidicStress and Dehydration Stress.

Why are so many people getting acid reflux, diabetes, high blood pressure and highcholesterol? This destructive environment that w e are creating in our bodies of

Oxidative Stress, Acidic Stress and Dehydration Stress leads to a downward spiral of

inflammation, aches and pains, illness and disease. We then look older and feel older.

    4A JANUARY 2015 LIFE & LEISURE16

Contrary to popular belief, adopting a healthy life-style is not a difficult undertaking. In certain in-

stances, convenience may need to be sacrificed in favor of nutrition, but many people find that

living healthy is not nearly as difficult as they assumed it would be when they initially decided to

    make a change.

When men and women decide they want to start living healthier, many mistakenly assume they must

abandon their existing habits entirely and start from scratch. But the following are some easy ways to

    start living healthier every day.

    Eat more fruits and vegeta-

bles. One of the best and easi-

est ways to live healthier is to

begin eating more fruits and veg-

    etables. Instead of un-healthy

    snacks like potato chips and

cookies, snack on a piece of fruit,

and never sit down to a meal

    unless you include some vegeta-

bles to go along with the main

    course. Studies have shown that

    men and women whose diets

are high in fruits and vegetablesare less likely to develop certain

    types of cancers, including can-

cers of the digestive tract. In

    addition, the United States

    Department of Agriculture notes

that people whose diets are rich

in fruits and vegetables have a

    lower risk for heart disease,

    including heart attack and stroke.

    Slow down your eating rou-

    tine. Some people may already

be eating the right foods, but

they may just be eating too much

of them. It takes time for your

body to let you know its had too much to eat, so eating too fast can increase your risk of overeating. While

eating, try to limit distractions that can take your attention away from how much youre eating. If youre

always watching television or checking emails on your phone while eating, try a few days of distraction-free,careful eating, and you may find yourself eating less and feeling more energized after a meal.

Skip the second glass of wine. The much publicized medical benefits of wine are somewhat mislead-

ing. According to the Mayo Clinic, when consumed in moderation, red wine can help prevent heart dis-

ease. Thats because alcohol and antioxidants found in red wine have been shown to increase levels of

high-density lipoprotein, often referred to as good cholesterol, and protect against artery damage. But

wine also contains sugars that can fatten the liver, and a fatty liver can contribute to a host of serious

health problems. If you already drink wine, limit yourself to one glass per day. If you are not a wine

drinker, then its important to note that many doctors believe the potential benefits of drinking wine do

not outweigh the potentially negative consequences associated with alcohol consumption, which include

neurological problems and an increased risk for heart disease.

Get more sleep. Inadequate sleep affects the body in a variety of ways. Many people are aware that

one poor nights sleep is certain to affect their energy levels the following day, but fewer may know of

the link between sleep duration and chronic disease. For example, the Harvard Medical School notes

that studies have linked insufficient sleep to type 2 diabetes, as the bodys ability to process glucose

can be compromised by poor sleeping habits. Other medical conditions that have been linked to insuffi-

cient sleep include obesity, heart disease and mood disorders. While you might be proud of your ability

to function on minimal sleep, the long-term effects of insufficient sleep can be dire,

so be sure to get at least seven hours of sleep each night.

Choosing to live healthier does not mean you need to completely overhaul your

existing lifestyle. In fact, you can make several easy everyday changes to dramat-

    ically improve your overall health.

    According to Remod-eling magazines

    2014 Cost vs. Value

    Report, a major kitchen

    remodeling project should

    enable homeowners to recoup

    74.2 percent of their initial

    investments. Kitchen renova-

tions have long been a safe

    way to improve the function-

ality and value of a home. But

not every kitchen project is a

    guaranteed winner. Home-owners may inadvertently

    make changes that end up

sticking out like a sore thumb

    rather than improving the

space. Take a look at these

    kitchen remodeling dos and

    donts to guide your next

    undertaking.

    DO consider the way

your kitchen will look withthe rest of the home. Keep

    architectural integrity in

    mind when designing the

    space. A farmhouse sink and

    country cabinets can look out

    of place in an ultra-modern

    home.

    DONT overlook the

    importance of a seasoned

    designer or architect. These

pros will know the tricks to

maximizing space and achiev-ing the ideal layout of appli-

ances and may be able to rec-

    ommend local contractors

    and vendors.

    DO look beyond surface

    details to the structural

    integrity of the design. The

    kitchen should be functional,

    long-lasting and beautiful.

DONT design just fortoday, but look to the future as

well. Unless you are willing to

    spend $50,000 every five

    years, look for styles and

materials that will last for the

    long haul. Older homeowners

    may want to make adjust-

    ments now that address

    potential mobility issues down

    the road.

    DO work with what you

have. A complete demolitionand renovation is not always

    necessary to achieve the

    desired results. Only invest in

    major changes if something is

    not working (such as having

    to walk across the entire

kitchen to access the stove) or

    is unsafe. Otherwise, minor

    upgrades may do the trick.

    DONT over-improve

    the space. A fully equipped

commercial kitchen may behandy for a professional chef,

    but the average person may

    not need an industrial hood

    and indoor pizza oven. When

    you make excessive improve-

ments, you may not be able to

recoup as much of the money

    spent because your home will

not be on par with the values

    of homes in the neighbor-

    hood.

DO make sure you canafford the project. Plan for

    some unexpected purchases

    and plan out the renovation

    according to your budget.

    Skimping on materials or

    design because of lack of

    money may leave you feeling

    At the start of every

    New Year, people

    around the world

    make resolutions. Resolutions

    to improve themselves, do

    something different, or make

a change. This year, make a

    resolution to change some-

ones life for the better by

    becoming a volunteer advo-

cate for a child in foster care.

    Passaic County CASA

    (Court Appointed Special

    Advocates) is recruiting vol-

    unteers for their spring train-

ing class who are interested in

becoming advocates for chil-dren in the Passaic County

    foster care system.

    Over 600 children in

    Passaic County are removed

    from their homes for their

own safety each year and need

a voice in the chaotic court

    process. These children are

    separated from siblings,

    friends, family, teachers, and

    sometimes even their personal

    belongings. CASA volunteers

    serve as a consistent presence

in the childs life during diffi-

    cult times when everything is

    unfamiliar to the child.

Volunteers conduct researchinto the childs case in order

    to make recommendations to

    the court, while meeting with

the child to ensure that they

    are receiving all the services

that they need to live a fulfill-

    ing life.

    Any individual with an

    interest and desire to help

    children is welcome to attend

an Open House to find out

    more about CASA. Current

    volunteers come from all

walks of life the one thing

they have in common is a

    heart for Passaic Countys

    children. All volunteers must

    pass an interview, background

    check, and complete a 36

    hour training class.

    Interested applicants can

    attend an Open House on

January 13 or January 27 at

6:00 pm, held in our office,

    415 Hamburg Turnpike, Suite

B1, Wayne, NJ 07470.For more information or

    Illnesses seem to

    peak during the win-

    ter months. A

tapped-out immune system as well as dry, cold air may encourage

the spread of common viruses and bacterial infections more easily.

As a result, its important that men, women and children take every

step possible to ward off sickness when the temperatures drop.Dietary changes can make a world of difference, and more and more

people are including these proven superfoods in their winter diets.

Avocado: Avocado has high levels of essential fatty acids and vita-

min B6, which is important in the biosynthesis of important neuro-

transmitters. Foods high in B vitamins may be able to counteract

some of the symptoms of winter-related depression.

Pomegranate: This quirky fruit has vitamins C and K, folate and

potassium and is a good source of fiber. Pomegranate has anti-

inflammatory properties, which can help in reducing joint pain and

preventing strokes. Pomegranate may also help the body fight

    viruses.

Cinnamon: Cinnamon has high levels of antioxidants, and some

studies point to cinnamon as a natural antibacterial agent. Cinnamon

also can help regulate blood-glucose levels, which is beneficial for

    those with diabetes.

Prunes: Now widely referred to as dried plums, prunes are an

important source of boron, which could prevent osteoporosis. High in

antioxidants, prunes help the body fight a variety of illnesses.

Cabbage: Cabbage may be a key element in the fight against can-

cer. Cabbage has phytochemicals that can protect the body against

cancer-causing free radicals. Its also a good source of dietary fiber, which can stimulate a sluggish digestive system.

Butternut squash: This food is packed with carotenoids, which are

stellar antioxidants. The starches in this squash also have been

    found to have anti-inflammatory properties.

Chestnuts: Chestnuts are worthy of inclusion in anyones diet.

Unlike many nuts, chestnuts are rela-

tively low in fat but have high levels of

protein. Theyre also packed with vita-

    min C and B vitamins.

    heartbreaking when the aging

process starts to take its toll on

mans best friend. But there are

    several ways owners can make

    the aging process more com-

    fortable for their dogs.

    Dr. Matthew Krupnick is the

    owner of the Pequannock Ani-

mal Hospital. He grew up in

Kinnelon and is happy to be

home with his wife, threecats, and two dogs to pro-

    vide quality and compassion-

ate care for pets in the com-

    munity. The Pequannock Ani-

mal Hospital is located at 591

    Newark Pompton Turnpike in

    Pompton Plains. You can

    reach the hospital by calling

    973-616-0400.

    Pequannock and

Pompton Plains as wellas many of the sur-

rounding areas. She is a life-

    long resident of Pequannock

    Township which increases her

    knowledge of the community

and gives her a unique under-

standing of all aspects of the

    real estate market including

    homes in several price ranges,

    schools, taxes and places of

    worship. For more informa-

tion on how to put Colleens

you who you are and what

your destiny is to be it creates

a slippery slope. Lt. Dan had a

    legacy of battlefield deaths

that he believed he had to

live up to. The reality is that

the words of another man, a

    very simple man, were neces-

sary for one legacy to be re-written.

    The name Fredric

Wilson II might not be a

    name that you quickly recog-

nize, but I believe it will be

one you hear in years to come.

    Mr. Wilson is a young

    African-American man.

Recently he posted a video on

    YouTube speaking specifically

to, as he put it, my black peo-ple. He addresses not only

    the issues, and responses,

going on in Ferguson but also

    variety of topics that affect

    the African-American com-

munity. The synopsis of his 5

    plus minute well-articulated

    message is that there will

    always be disagreements and

    challenges between different

groups of people. He goes on

to say that each person needsto take responsibility for his or

her own life and not be

    defined by the past, current

    struggles or by association

    with the wrong people. Mr.

    Wilson said what needed to

be said, even if it was unpopu-

lar in certain circles. In other

    words know who you are!

    Thank you Frederic!

    Now its our turn! Its

time to do some soul search-

ing as to who we are individu-ally and as a nation. And

when we do we need to stand

up for what we believe and

fight for that belief whether in

    our schools, churches the

    workplace or at home.

    But again, be careful that

you are not fighting for what

    someone else believes. The

truth is that if you ask most

    people what they believe they

can tell you but if you ask thequestion why? most cant

    answer. Hundreds of thou-

    sands of citizens have given

their lives so that we can be a

    free people. That beautiful

    thing called freedom is in

    great jeopardy today because

    the reflection in the mirror

    has become so distorted.

    Once Lt. Dan stripped

    away the non-sense that he

was sold and began to live his

life with purpose everythingchanged. We as a country

need to learn from this simple

    story of identity.

You play a role. So what

    are you going to do?

    Remember, you are still Lt.

    Dan.
