Early fall is a great time of

year to make improve-ments inside and outside

of your home, but you dont have

to do it all alone. The dedicated

staff at Seelas Paint in Wayne is

eager to help you every step of

    the way. The family-owned busi-

ness has always been known for

    providing advice and personal

    attention to each customers

    home improvement project.

In fact, it was 60 years ago

when Al Seela founded his busi-ness on the principle that Paint

without advice is worth only half

the price. Since then, Als son

    Bob and grandchildren Jamie

and Jeff have continued to grow

    the business, developing a repu-

tation for quality products, fairprices and a knowledgeable staff.

    Seelas proudly sells paint

    from Benjamin Moore, an

    award-winning New Jersey-based

    paint company, popular for its

    high-end quality and sustainable

product lines. The store also sells

    window fashions from Hunter

    Douglas, the industrys leading

    manufacturer of custom window

    fashions.

But even as business andproduct offerings expand, the

Seela family always makes it a

    priority to provide personal

    attention and professional

    advice to its customers. The

    friendly store team is expertly

skilled at helping you pick just

the right color to make your

    home have that personal touch.

    Our staff strives to make

sure that our customers find the

right color and the right prod-ucts to complete their projects,

    even beyond their own expecta-

    tions, said owner Bob Seela.

    They are so committed to

    helping homeowners put the fin-

    ishing touches on their projects

that they even have their own

    window treatment specialist.

    Pam offers in-home con-

sultations. She has a great eye for

    getting your windows just right,

Seela said.In addition to paint, the

store has a full selection of wall-

paper books for you to browse

and find the exact patterns, tex-

    Nobody wants to pay

    premiums for a bene-

    fit they will never

    realize. Nobody enjoys speak-

ing to a life insurance agent.

    Nobody wants to talk about

    their own demise. Nobody

wants to plan for their owndeath. Woody Allen, the

    famous movie actor, producer,

    director says that he isnt

afraid of death; he just doesnt

want to be there when it hap-

pens. In one of his older

    movies, there is a torture

scene where he places the vic-

    tim in an underground bomb

    shelter and the audience

    watches as a life insurance

salesman, briefcase in hand, walks down into the pit to

    conduct a tortuous presenta-

    tion about life insurance.

    The Gallop organization

    once conducted a poll asking

    people which occupation

    would you wish your daugh-

ters intended husband to be a

    member of. The number one

    answer was Clergy; at the

bottom of the list was, Used

Car Salesman. But, rightabove the bottom of the barrel

    was, Life Insurance Agent.

    FYI Doctor was listed as

    number 2, but, after the

    advent of Obamacare, the poll

    if conducted today, Im confi-

    dent that Doctor would fall

    heavily in the rankings and

    Life Insurance Agent would

rise close to the top! Let me

    explain

Lets be honest with our-selves, who wouldnt be

    enthusiastic when scanning

    the obituaries to see that

when a certain person on the

list, named you as one of their

    beneficiaries! In the Ameri-

can lexicon is a phrase, who

died and left you a fortune? It

    was Ben Franklin who said

that nothing in life is certain

except for death and taxes. Of

course, when he said thosewords he was unaware that

    this great nation would

impose a tax at death, first ini-

    tiated as a temporary measure

to help pay for the War of

    1812, later re-imposed to pay

for WWI and then left perma-

nently in place to this day,

    though modified from time totime.

    The Presbyterian Min-

    isters, in colonial times, decid-

ed that it was too expensive

    for the church to

    care for their fami-

    lies when they died

    so they instituted a

    program of making

    payments into a

    kettle from their

pay each period tofund a death bene-

    fit for that purpose.

    The older the min-

    ister, the higher

    the contribution as

    they were closer to

    the end of their

    life, hence, annual

    renewable term

    life insurance was

    born. Years later, a

    German fellowrealized that there

    was much more

    money in the ket-

    tle than was actually needed

to pay all of the death bene-

fits, so he redesigned the pro-

gram to allow the insureds to

    borrow, with interest paid

back to the kettle (and kettle

    management), an advance

    against their eventual death

benefit. If the insured diedbefore the loan was paid back,

it was deducted from the pay-

out. The idea was so success-

    ful that the company decided

to allow others in to their

    Society of insureds with a

    name change to the Widows

    and Orphans Friendly

    Society in Newark, NJ,

    which later in 1877, became

    the company we know today

    as Prudential.Other companies and

    societies followed suit, some

    fraternal, some mutual and

    others as stock companies

designed to make a profit for

    their members, policy holders,

    or stockholders as the case

may be, leading to the wealth-

iest industry in the UnitedStates and the entire world.

    Along the way, these

    powerhouse companies have

    been financially protecting

    families and businesses for

    centuries now, yet, and Im

    still embarrassed to say this,

    life insurance continues to be

    the most bought yet least

    understood product in our

    nation, bar none! Further, no

    other product has evolved to

offer so much more opportuni-ty and improvement from its

    inception and original design

    than life insurance. Not even

    the computer or telephone

    can match the advancements

    in scope, benefits and design

    enhancements that life insur-

    ance has enjoyed. In other

    simplified words, life insur-

ance isnt just for dying any-

    more! Today, in addition to

what you already know aboutlife insurance it can also: pay

for college for your kids and

    pay for your own retirement

    income needs, at the same

time - tax-free! It can pay for

    long-term care, at a nursing

home or in your own home. It

can pay you if you have cancer

or a heart attack and do notdie! It can pay for itself if you

    cannot make the payments

    because of a disability.

    The cash values rate of

return today, can be based on

    the positive movement of a

    stock market index of your

    choice including the: S+P 500

    or DJIA, Europes Eurostoxx,

    the Chinese Hang Seng, the

    Japanese Nikkei or a fixed

    guaranteed interest rate if

more appropriate when inter-est rates are higher than today.

    The policy owner can change

    the strategy annually. No

    more substandard returns! In

    fact, life insurance policies of

    current design must be viewed

as an investment class in addi-

    tion to death benefit protec-

tion. Not to do so could prove

    detrimental to your financial

    health!

However, in all of thehoopla stated above, there is

a barrier of entry into the

    world of life insurance and

    that my friends is called

    underwriting. Alas, there is a

    gatekeeper and this colum-

    nist, a diabetic, who four

    years ago suffered a quintuple

bypass, doesnt possess thecombination to their lock.

What I am stressing is your

    insurability must be counted

    amongst your greatest assets!

    To ignore your

    insurability might

    prove to be a

    grave mistake. To

    prevent this

    tragedy in my

    family, Ive locked

    in my young chil-drens insurability

    by securing poli-

    cies for them

    before their 9th

    birthdays! Thats

    right and the best

    part is that all pre-

    miums were fin-

    ished being paid

    in only five years!

    Under current

    assumptions, theywill enjoy millions

    of dollars in tax-

    free income

    throughout their retirement

years and still pass on mil-

lions more to my yet unborn

    grandchildren.

    Yes, September is Life

    Insurance Awareness Month

    and Im sure your personal

    life insurance awareness

needs improvement. If notfor you, for your children and

    theirs. I cannot stress enough

    the importance of getting a

new fresh look at this indus-

    try and your current policies

to see what may be done to

    improve your insurance

    financial picture regardless of

your age. Let me add that

    though I myself am uninsur-

able, I still enjoy the tax

    advantaged accumulationbenefits with tax-free access

to the cash values of life

    insurance on older policies

    purchased before my heart

surgery and newer policiespurchased after my surgery

    even though Im uninsurable.

    Its important to learn

    the secrets of how to:

    Maximize your income today

    while preserving, protecting

    and perpetuating your wealth

for tomorrow. To that end I

    pledge my support; all you

need is to ask me for a no

    obligation no cost appoint-

ment to see how life insur-ance and the entire financial,

    retirement and estate plan-

    ning process can best benefit

    your personal situation. Call

today and Ill explain how I

    picked the underwriters

    lock!

    Alack of basic inter-

    nal controls can

    leave your company

    vulnerable to pilferage,

    embezzlement, and other

    types of misappropriation.

    Small firms generally

    cant afford to hire internal

    auditors or set up separate

    divisions to break up duties.

    But even smaller companies

    can establish controls in cer-

    tain high-risk areas, such as

    the following:

    Cash disbursements. If

    at all possible, the

    owner/manager should sign

    checks. This control has a

    dual purpose: management

    sees how the company is

    spending its money, and the

    cash disbursement function

    is kept separate from book-

    keeping or accounting. If the

    same person signs checks and

    enters disbursement transac-

    tions in the accounting

    records, embezzlement is

    harder to prevent. Requiring

    two signatures on checks

    above a certain amount also

    provides greater control.

    Customer collections.

    Consider having the

    owner/manager open the

    mail, especially if customer

    collections are a regular part

    of your business.

    Personnel practices. By

    taking care to perform back-

    key employees, especially

    those who will be handling

    you can prevent problems

    later on. Of course, financial

    Perhaps a small busi-

tone at the top. If manage-

However, if a manager is per-

    Pet owners go to great

    lengths to treat their pets

    like members of the fam-

ily. The days of dog houses in

the backyard are largely a thing

of the past, and many pet own-

ers are more careful about what

    they feed their four-legged

    friends, placing a greater

    emphasis on a nutritious diet

    that promotes pet health.

    Being a proactive pet

    owner also means taking pre-

    ventive measures to protect

    your pets. This includes learn-

    ing about rabies, which can

    also help protect members of

    your household and your com-

    munity. Pet owners who learn

    about rabies, including its

    causes and symptoms, are bet-

    ter equipped to recognize a

rabid animal, and will know to

keep their pets and their chil-

dren indoors until its safe to

    go outside.

    Rabies is an infectious dis-

ease that can spread from ani-

mals to humans. When an ani-

mal has rabies, the virus travels

    through the nerves inside the

    brain, where it reproduces and

    then travels back through the

nerves to most parts of the

    body, including the salivary

    glands. When the rabies virus

    reaches the salivary glands,

    brain damage has likely

    occurred and the virus has

infected the saliva, where it can

enter a persons body through a

    bite or broken skin.

    Humans who contracted

the rabies virus in the past did

so after being bitten by a dog.

    However, the Centers for

    Disease Control and Preven-

tion note that more and more

    causes of human rabies have

been linked to bats and rac-

    coons. The Canadian Centre

    for Occupational Health and

    Safety notes that among

    domestic animals, dogs account

for between two and six per-

    cent of rabies infections, while

    cats are responsible for between

    one and two-and-a-half per-

cent of rabies cases. Thanks in

large part to the rabies vaccina-

tion, there have not been any

reports of rabies caused by dog

bites in the U.S. in years.

    Rabies can appear in ani-

mals in various ways. When an

animal has furious rabies, it will

    change behavior, grow restless,

    wander aimlessly and bite any

    animals, people or objects that

get in its way before eventually

    becoming paralyzed in its

throat and hind legs. Once that

    occurs, the animal will most

    likely die.

    Some animals with rabies,

    however, will not become vio-

    lent. These animals will change

    their behavior, which may

    become withdrawn or more

    affectionate. Animals may try

to hide and will find it difficult

    to swallow. Their behavior will

    not become violent, and they

are likely to die after a few days.

    The CCOHS notes that cats

    infected with the rabies virus

    typically become extremely

    vicious, while dogs also become

    excitable and may become

vicious and bite for no reason.

    Though rare, human

beings can be infected with the

    rabies virus. Drooling, convul-

    sions, exaggerated sensations or

pain at the bite site, loss of feel-

ing in an area of the body, loss

    of muscle function and difficul-

ty swallowing are a few of the

    symptoms humans may exhibit

    when infected with the rabies

    virus.

    Should humans or their

pets be bitten by an animal,

they should try to gather as

    much information as

    possible about the biter

    and contact animal

    control so the animal

    can be safely captured

to determine if it has rabies. If

there is a risk of rabies, humans

will be given a series of doses of

    a preventive vaccine and a

    treatment called human rabies

    immunoglobulin, or HRIG,

    which is administered the day

    the bite occurred. Vets will

    often quarantine a bitten pet

    that has received the rabies

    vaccine prior just to monitor

    behavior and be safe.

If you are bitten by an

    animal, report the incident

    right away and contact your

    physician immediately. Its

also good to do so if you

    havent been bitten but were

exposed to a bat, fox or skunk,

all of which can carry the

    rabies virus.

    Incidences of rabies have

    dropped dramatically in

    recent years, but pet owners

    should still take a proactive

    and preventive approach to

    protect themselves, their

    loved ones and their pets.

    The cool, crisp days

    of autumn will soon

    arrive. As fall

    foliage creates a colorful

    display and kids frolic in

leaf piles on the lawn, you

may want to pay some mind

to a few lesser known facts

    about this beloved time of

    year. Autumn may call to

    mind Halloween and the

    return of school, but there

    are other factors that make

    this season unique.

    1. The first day of autumn is

    known as the autumnal equi-

nox. On this day, the number

of hours of daylight and dark-

ness are equal. This is because

the sun is aligned with the cen-

ter of the Earth between the

north and south of the planet.

    The other equinox occurs in

the spring, which arrives in the

third week of March in the

    Northern hemisphere.

    2. In Greek mythology, autumn

    was a time when Persephone,

    the daughter of Demeter, was

    abducted by Hades, the god-

    king of the underworld. During

    this time, Demeter, the goddess

    of the harvest, was distraught

and the ground grew sparse and

    cold. When Persephone

    returned in the springtime,

    plants and life bloomed anew

    because of Demeters happi-

    ness.

    3. Those who live closest to the

equator, which is the center of

    the planet, never experience

    the season of autumn. Around

    the equator, the temperature

    remains consistently warm.

    4. Yellow, orange and varia-

    tions thereof always reside in

    the pigmentation of tree

    leaves, but they are just

    overpowered by the abun-

    dance of green from the

    chlorophyll in the leaves.

    Come autumn, however,

    when the sun weakens and

    days grow shorter, the

    amount of chlorophyll in

    leaves diminishes, allowing

    the other pigments in the

    leaves to show through.

    5. Red and purple leaves are

    actually caused by the presence

of sugars from sap that is

    trapped inside of the leaves.

    6. Fall is a peak migration time

    for many species of birds.

During autumn, birds will fly to

other areas as they seek more

    hospitable climates. The Arctic

    tern journeys about 11,000

miles each way for its annual

migration. That is like going all

    the way across the United

States about three and a half

    times

    Circa 1994. Forrest

    Gump is without a

    doubt one of my

favorite movies. I have seen it

a hundred times and yet still

enjoy it. Forrest was a simple

    man whose nave nature led

    him to make wise observa-

    tions. One of my favorite

    scenes is when Forrest and

    Lieutenant Dan are in the

hospital. In a fit of anger Lt.

    Dan, whose legs were both

    amputated, pulls Forrest down

on the floor. Forrest had saved

Lt. Dans life when he was

    wounded, but Lt. Dan insisted

he was supposed to die on the

battlefield just like the rest of

the men in his family had

    done in previous wars.

    Because Forrest saved him he

believed that he was robbed of

his destiny. He ends by telling

Forrest, Look at me. I use to

    be Lt. Dan Taylor. Upon

    hearing this Forrest looks at

Lt. Dan and makes a powerful

    statement when he says, You

    still are Lt. Dan.

    When your identity is

wrapped up in what others tell

you who you are and what

your destiny is to be it is a

    dangerous slippery slope. Lt.

Dan had a legacy of battlefield

deaths that he believed he had

to live up to. The reality is

that the words of a simple man

were needed for that legacy to

    be re-written.

    Think about it

There is the destiny we all

believe we have and then there

is the true destiny we will all

    realize. The challenge is that

too often we listen to others

and get wrapped up in their

visions for us so that we lose our

way. There is another road that

we should be traveling but we

    cant locate it because someone

    else created the map! What

    about you? Remember, you are

    still Lt. Dan.

    7. Contrary to popular belief,

    squirrels who have spent the

    entire autumn collecting

acorns and other foods do not

    hibernate for the winter.

    Rather, they spend the majori-

ty of their time in nests they

    built to shelter them from

    harsh weather. When squirrels

do come out in winter, they are

    usually tunneling under the

snow to find the food they

    buried during the fall.

    8. Several cultures have

    ancient traditions that coincide

    with autumn. For example, the

    Chinese celebrate the Moon

Festival to give thanks for a

    successful summer harvest.

    9. Halloween is a large part of

    autumn. The concept of wear-

    ing masks and costumes hails

    from ancient Celtic tradition.

    The Celts believed ghosts

    roamed on Halloween, and

    people wore disguises to hide

    from the spirits.

    10. Youre bound to see pump-

kins as part of autumn decor.

    The pumpkin was first named

by the Greeks. They called this

    edible orange item pepon,

    which means large melon.

    11. Evergreen trees will not

    lose their leaves like deciduous

    trees. Their leaves, also called

    needles, are covered with a

    thick wax. This wax protects

    the inner components of the

    needles, preventing them from

    freezing.

    12. Autumn also signals anoth-

    er colorful spectacle apart from

    the tree leaves. The aurora

    borealis, also known as the

    Northern Lights, tends to be

visible this time of year. This is

    because geomagnetic storms

are about twice as likely to

occur during the fall thanks to

    cool evening weather.

    After a few months of

    blue skies and warm

    temperatures, sum-

    mer revelers will soon bid

adieu to the sultry days of

    this beloved season. Summer

is often a season filled with

    vacations and recreation, but

    as the warm days dwindle

    and work and school com-

    mitments begin anew, there

is additional work to be done

    in preparation for the

    months ahead.

    Stock up on pool equip-

    ment. Homeowners who

    have pools can take advan-

    tage of end-of-season sales to

    purchase a few more gallons

of pool chlorine or other pool

    equipment. Store them after

    you have winterized the pool,

and you will be ahead of the

game in terms of supplies for

    next year.

    Plan your garden har-

vest. If you have a backyard

    garden, pick your tomatoes

    and other vegetables before

    the weather starts to get

    chilly. Herbs can be

    washed and frozen in zip-

    per-top baggies so they

    can be used when cook-

    ing over the next several

    months. Boil tomatoes

for sauce and freeze or jar

    them. Begin to clear out

    residual stems and plant

    debris from the garden.

    Clean patios and

    furniture. Scrub and hose

    down outdoor furniture,

    cushions and living areas.

    Clean and dry items before

    storing them for the winter,

so everything is ready to go

    when the warm weather

    returns next year.

    Purchase spring bulbs.

    Buy bulbs for spring-bloom-

    ing flowers and map out

    where they will be planted

    for beautiful flowers next

    year. Wait until temperatures

    start to dip before planting

    the bulbs, otherwise they

    may begin to produce shoots

    prematurely, zapping the

    bulbs of energy.

    Check the heating sys-

    tem. Although turning on

the heat may be the last

    thing youre thinking about,

its a good idea to test it and,

    if necessary, have the system

    serviced prior to the arrival

    of cold weather.

    Tend to the deck and

    other repairs. Make repairs to

    outdoor structures now, and

theyll be more likely to sur-

    vive the harsh weather thats

    just over the horizon. Apply

    stain or sealant to further

    protect wood structures in

    advance of snow and ice.

    Examine the roof and

    chimney. Winter is a poor

time to learn you have miss-

ing roof shingles or a leak.

    Furthermore, ensure the

    chimney and venting to the

    outdoors is not obstructed by

    abandoned animal nests.

    Check your closets. Go

    through clothing and remove

    any items that are damaged

    or no longer fit, donating

    them if possible. Clean out

kids closets as well, as pants

that fit perfectly in May will

    not necessarily fit come

    September.

    Stock the shed. Once

    the weather has cooled

    down, move outdoor flower

    pots, hoses and lawn orna-

    ments you no longer need

into the shed or garage while

    ensuring items needed in fall

    and winter, such as rakes,

    snow shovels and snow blow-

    ers, are more accessible.

exhaust pipe. Check that thearea is free of leaves, debris and

    animal nests. Again, any block-

    ages can impede the efficiency

of the unit or cause it to fail.

    Thermostat

    Very often a furnace may

not turn over because the ther-

mostat is faulty. Many a home-

owner has spent money to have

a service person come out to

    examine the furnace, only to

learn they only need a new

    thermostat or battery in the

    thermostat.

    Check the thermostat

    against a separate thermometer

to ensure that it is reading the

    right temperature in the house.

Raise the setting a few degrees

to test if the heat kicks on.

    Fuel

    Furnaces are powered by

    various energy sources.

Electricity, gas or oil may be

involved in the process. If fuel

is not being delivered to the

furnace, the pilot will not light

and warm the air to be blown

through the house. Some sys-tems have an emergency shut-

off switch that will halt fuel

delivery to the unit. Its easy for

    these switches to be flipped

    accidentally if a furnace is

    located in a high-traffic area.

Make sure the switch is in the

    on position before reporting a

    problem.

    In addition to these steps,

you may want to vacuum the

    vent screens around the house.

This will reduce the amount of

dust blown around. Also, if the

furnace exhausts into a flue, be

sure that the exhaust route is

    clear so that carbon monoxide

does not back up into the

    home.

    Many homeowners are

    fully capable of inspecting their

    furnaces to ensure they are

    ready for winter. If anything

seems out of place or malfunc-

    tions, consult with an HVAC

    professional to make repairs.
