Carnivals, county fairs andstreet festivals can makefor fun family outings.

The nice weather just beckonspeople outdoors, and weekendafter weekend resourceful carni-val goers can probably find a fairnearby. But revelers need to make

sure their experiences are assafe as they are fun.

The Outdoor AmusementBusiness Association estimates500 million guests visit carnivals,fairs and festivals each year. Morethan half of them participate inmobile amusement rides, among

other recreationalpursuits. Such pursuits can notonly be fun, but they also can bedangerous, especially for youngchildren. As a result, parents tak-ing their kids along to enjoy this

wholesome fun should con-sider the following precau-tions.•Be prepared. Research thefair or carnival and knowwhat to expect when youarrive. How big is it? Whatare the types of attractionsand what vendors will beincluded? What is the parkingsituation? Are strollersallowed? Knowing what toexpect can make the occasiona little less stressful. If yourchild is old enough to under-stand, explain what the fairentails and how it can becrowded and noisy.•Dress for the weather. It is

important to wear sturdy, com-fortable footwear. Many carnivalsare set up in fields or empty park-ing lots. There will be a lot of

Jim rushed home afterleaving the hospital wherehis mother just endured a

non-emergency heart valvereplacement procedure, afterwhich, the surgeon placedMartha in the hands of theafter surgery cardiac carephysicians. This team of doc-tors did not want the newvalve to be over-stressed, sothey gave Martha medicationto slow-down her heart rate.As it turned out, they slowedit down so much and so fastthat Martha died and theycouldn’t bring her back.Martha was 77 years old.

Jim, the eldest brother of4 children, was distraught tosay the least, turning next tosorrow then to anger, Jimcalled me from the funeralhome to tell me this story,cursing and threatening to suethe doctors for killing his

mother. I was Martha’s andher late husband Bob’s finan-cial advisor for over 20 yearsand adored these wonderfulpeople and they felt the sameway about me. I was horrifiedwhen Jim called me with thedevastating news that Martha,my friend, would be my clientno more. What Jim said to menext made an indelibleimpression.

Early in my career, some33 years ago, I instructed myclients to list me in their littleblack book, you know the oneI am talking about, theiraddress and phone book. Itold Martha to list me under“F” for Financial and under“L” for life insurance andagain under “I” for income.Martha and Bob were loyaland faithful clients who fol-lowed my suggestions and rec-ommendations to the letter.

Her calendar and appoint-ment book had my name andnumber in all of the places Itold her to place it, “just incase”. Now Martha was goneand the life insurance claimforms needed to be completedand filed. The lawyer wantedto charge the family thousandsof dollars to probate the

estate. Stopping that, I toldJim it would be my honor andobligation to help himthrough the process with nocost whatsoever! And that isexactly what we did.

Jim explained that hismother had the ultimate trustin me for she left multiplenotes to him so that it would

be impossible to overlook justone. Martha left more than adozen “Little Yellow Sticky”post-it notes anywhere Jimwould look in her house foranything important. Sheposted those “Little YellowSticky’s” all over the house.One on her night stand andone more in the night standtop drawer. There was a L.Y.S.in the bathroom and anotheron and in her strong box. Onemore was found in the carglove box too. There was aLittle Yellow Sticky on therefrigerator and one more inthe basement by Bob’s tools.Jim told me that he found 13Little Yellow Sticky’s in total.

I was warmed andenthused that Martha listenedto me and performed to per-fection. You see that each andevery L.Y.S. was really aL.O.I., Letter of Instruction,

written to Jimmy, her eldestand geographically closest son.Her L.Y.S.-L.O.I.’s all deliv-ered identically the same mes-sage.

In a study that examinedthe impact of sweet andsour candy on teeth,

researchers tested four brandsof candy that are sweet andsour: Jolly Rancher, LifeSavers, Mike and Ike, andTwizzlers.

Upon examination withmicroscopes, the researchersnoted that the teeth exposedto the sour candies had signif-icant softer enamel than the

teeth exposed to the sweetones. The largest erosion inenamel was seen with the sourJolly Ranchers.

According to theresearchers, sour candies havehigh levels of citric, fumaricand malic acids. The firstcomes from citrus fruits andjuices, and is common in anumber of real foods andcandy. Fumaric and malicacids are a bit more hidden,

used not only to make candysour but also as additives inprocessed foods.

The Minnesota DentalAssociation launched a cam-paign called “The Power ofSour on Your Teeth” toincrease awareness of this newand emerging concern.

It can make a person

dizzy and feeling sick to theirstomach. If you feel thirsty,you already are dehydrated.•Eat light. If you will be rid-ing a lot of rides, it’s better toeat light meals beforehand.Heavy, greasy foods in yourstomach coupled with motionsickness can lead to trouble.Wait until after you have got-ten your fill of the rides beforeindulging in funnel cake.•Stick together. It can betempting to separate whenyou get to the carnival, asolder children may not beinterested in the same rides astheir younger siblings. Butseparating increases the risk ofsomeone getting lost.•Seek shelter in a storm.Thunderstorms can roll inunexpectedly. Remember,lightning will seek the easiest

method to reaching theground. Tall rides could bestrike points. Get out of theweather and move indoors orto a car if possible.

night. They may have theirwardrobe picked out, thetransportation arranged andthe group of friends withwhom they will celebrate.What prom-goers may notforesee is heading to the promwithout a date. The reality isthat students go solo to theprom each year and still have avery good time in the process.

Prom is a highlight ofhigh school for manyteenagers. But a great deal ofpressure is placed on studentscome prom night, when stu-dents’ worries about theirattire pale in comparison tothe social pressure many feel.Many would-be prom goerswould prefer to go without adate to alleviate some of thepressure to live up to certain

prom night expectations.Today it is quite common forgroups of friends to go to promor homecoming together.

For students attendingthe prom without a date, thereare still ways to enjoy theevent to the fullest. These aresome tips for having fun atprom if you’re going stag.•Establish a party within aparty. The American Veteri-nary Society of AnimalBehavior has outlined theimportance of early puppysocialization, preferably beforea puppy reaches 12 to 16weeks of age. This is a periodof important critical develop-ment, which can help the ani-mal grow into a well-adjustedpet.

New pet parents areencouraged to enroll in a

training class for their puppiesor, at the very least, to exposetheir puppies to other animalsand people at an early age.The experience not only helpsowners develop a strong bondwith their pets but alsoenforces positive behavior in afun atmosphere. If not social-ized, dogs may become aggres-sive or extremely off-put byother animals and people.Such dogs run a greater risk ofbeing surrendered to a shelter.

Although puppies maynot have completed theirentire run of immunizations atan early age, many vets agreethat early socialization withother animals outweighs therisk of contracting an illness.The benefits of this socializa-tion include proper interac-tion with people, off-leashplay to learn boundaries and

bite inhibition with otherpuppies.

Young pups are eagersponges, ready to absorb infor-

mation from their environ-ment and families. Early stim-ulation in a fun and support-ive manner will help preventsome potential behavioralproblems that can becomemore difficult to correct as a

puppy grows into adulthood.Although it is possible toteach an old dog new tricks it’smuch easier to teach dogs

when they are still eager pup-pies willing to learn.

Barking, biting, diggingand jumping are all behaviorspuppies are likely to engagein. It is key for pet owners todiscourage these behaviors as

early as possible because it canlead to a strained relationshipbetween pet parent and ani-mal if the dog continues toengage in these acts into ado-lescence. Very often dogs arechastised or surrendered sim-ply because they were nevertaught the proper way tobehave.

It is not necessary toenroll in a puppy trainingclass if owners feel confidentin their abilities to train thedog on their own. Workingwith the pet each and everyday for a small amount of timewill gradually drive home thenecessary lessons. Heaping alarge amount of praise on a jobwell done will positively rein-force desired actions. If apuppy training class is not partof a dog’s upbringing, at-hometraining and visits to a dog

park or puppy daycare canprovide the socialization thedog needs.

Puppies are willing andable to learn a great deal ofbehaviors at an early age.Responsible pet owners mustset the course for discipline,socialization and training thatcan foster a long and healthyrelationship.

On the other hand, if youstick to the tax itinerary, youcan write off most of yourtravel costs – even thoughyou’re spending part of thetime on personal pursuits. Thekey is to record significantlymore “business days” than“personal days” on the trip.

Example: John Green, aself-employed individual, fliescross-country on Monday tomake a presentation to aclient. He is in business meet-

ings Tuesday throughThursday. On Friday, theclient inks the deal. Johndecides to spend the weekendplaying golf and lounging by

the pool. He flies home thefollowing Monday.

The round-trip airfarecosts John $1,500. He alsoincurs $1,400 in lodging($200 a day) and $800 inmeals ($100 a day) during hiseight-day trip.

On these facts, Johnspends six days on business –

the two days traveling countas business days – and onlytwo days on pleasure. So thetrip qualifies as business-relat-ed travel. He can deduct the

entire airfare as well as fivedays’ lodging and 50% of themeals attributable to his busi-ness stay. Result: John deductsa total of $2,800 ($1,500 air-fare, $1,000 lodging and $300meals).

Note that any personalexpenses, such as green fees atthe golf course, are nonde-

ductible. Also, if family mem-bers accompany you on a trip,you can’t deduct their expens-es, but your travel may stillqualify as business-related.

Grilled Garlic Shrimp with aFresh Heirloom TomatoSauceServes 6For the marinated shrimp:½ cup extra-virgin olive oil¼ cup red wine vinegar2 garlic cloves, minced36 large shrimp, peeled anddeveined12 6-inch wooden skewersFor the tomato sauce:3 pounds assorted large heirloomtomatoes1 small sweet onion, minced1 garlic clove, minced½ teaspoon sea salt

¼ teaspoon freshly ground blackpepper1 tablespoon honey, preferablysourwood honey¼ cup fresh basil leaves, cut intothin strips (chiffonade is the for-mal name for this cut), plusmore for garnishSea saltFreshly ground black pepper1. To marinate the shrimp,

combine the olive oil, redwine vinegar and garlic in alarge bowl. Stir to combine.Add the shrimp and allow tosit, covered, for 1 hour. Stiroccasionally.2. Prepare a medium fire in acharcoal or gas grill. Soak theskewers in water for at least 30minutes to prevent them fromburning.

3. To make the tomato sauce,bring a medium pot of waterto a boil. Place one or twotomatoes at a time into theboiling water. Watch themand, as you see the skin split,remove with a slotted spoonand place in a bowl of coolwater. At this point, it will bevery easy to slip off the skins.4. Cut the peeled tomatoes

into a small dice. Put the cuttomatoes into a large bowl.Add the onion, garlic, salt,pepper, and honey. Stir gentlyto combine.5. Skewer the shrimp, 3 perskewer. Grill the skeweredshrimp for 1 to 2 minutes oneach side, until they are pink.Sprinkle lightly with sea saltand a couple grinds of fresh

pepper.6. Just before serving, add thebasil leaves to the tomatosauce. Taste and add more saltif necessary.7. Ladle the tomato sauceonto a serving platter andarrange the skewers on top ofthe sauce. Garnish with morebasil leaves and enjoy!
