    scores than those participants

    who were less active.

    Blumenthals study was

not the only one to conclude

that exercise can have a posi-tive impact on mood. In a

    review of 11 studies that

    examined the effects of exer-

    cise on mental health, Boston

    University professor of psy-

    chology Michael Otto and his

    colleagues found that exercise

could be a powerful tool when

    treating clinical depression,

    and even recommended clini-

    cians include exercise as part

of their treatment plans fordepressed patients.

    ANTIDOTE TO ANXI-

    ETY

    Some researchers, Otto

    included, have begun to exam-

ine the effects of exercise on

    treating and possibly prevent-

    ing anxiety. The bodys nerv-

    ous system responds quickly

    when people feel frightened or

    threatened, often causing the

bodys heart rate to increaseand sweating and dizziness to

    occur. Those people who are

    especially sensitive to anxiety

    respond to these feelings with

    fear, and that makes them

    more likely to develop panic

    disorders. But Otto and fellow

    researcher Jasper Smits of the

    Anxiety Research and

    Treatment Program at

    Southern Methodist Univer-

sity studied the effects thatregular workouts might have

    on people prone to anxiety.

    Since exercise produces many

    of the same physical reactions,

such as sweating and an ele-

vated heart rate, the body pro-

    duces when responding to fear

    or threats, Otto and Smits

    wanted to determine if exer-

    cise might help people prone

    to anxiety become less likely

to panic when experiencingfear or threats. In studying 60

    participants with heightened

    sensitivity to anxiety, Otto

and Smits found that the sub-

    jects who participated in a

    two-week exercise program

    exhibited marked improve-

    ments in anxiety sensitivity

    compared to those participants

who did not take part in the

    exercise program. Otto and

    Smith concluded that this

    improvement was a result of

    the exercise group participants

    learning to associate the symp-

toms common to both fear and

    exercise, such as sweating and

an elevated heart rate, withsomething positive (exercise)

    instead of something negative

    (anxiety).

    Regular exercise benefits

    the human body in numerous

ways, not the least of which is

its impact on the brain. More

    information on the link

    between exercise and

    improved mental health is

    osing a spouse can be

    hard enough, but losing

a spouse and not know-ing how to manage the fami-

    lys finances can lead to

    despair. As you gather your

tax records this year, take a

few extra steps to help your

    spouse avoid added stress after

    youre gone.

In many households onespouse takes care of the

    finances, such as paying bills,

    filing important papers and

    tracking investments. Its

essential that the other spouseat least knows the location of

these papers and how to access

    the assets. To provide struc-

ture to your records, start with

a balance sheet listing of all

    bank accounts, insurance poli-

    cies and investment holdings,

    including applicable online

    passwords. Also list your phys-

ical assets and the location of

    ownership titles.

Having a completerecord of assets is important,

but so is knowing how to man-

age those assets. Make a list of

    things you consider important

    that your spouse might not

    know about. This might

include such things as how to

    manage retirement distribu-

    tions and estate issues. You

might also list the names of

    people who should be notified

of your passing. Simple things, like routine chores to perform

at the vacation home or recre-

    ational vehicle, might provide

    comforting guidance.

    Educating your spouse on

financial matters can also be a

    satisfying social opportunity.

    Join with other like-minded

    couples to establish an invest-

    ment club where everyone

participates in the decisionmaking. Such venues often

    lead to important conversa-

    tions about managing money

    discussions not always easy

when its just you and your

    spouse.

    Candid conversations

    about family finances are

    sometimes better facilitated in

    front of a trusted financial

    advisor. Including your advi-

sor will not only provideanother set of eyes, but can

    Tooth sensitivity can be

    caused by a problem

    with the tooths nerve

and blood supply (pulp), or by

    exposure of dentin, resulting

    in dentin hypersensitivity.

    Dentin is a sponge-like,

    hard layer underneath enamel

    (the outer white, hardest

layer of a tooth) that contains

small channels that connectthe pulp to the outside of the

    dentin. When dentin is

    exposed, there can be hyper-

    sensitivity.

    Dentin hypersensitivity

is a short, sharp pain not

caused by tooth decay. It can

affect up to one in every two

    people at sometime in their

    lives. This condition is esti-

    mated to affect 40 million

    people in the U.S.Hypersensitivity mostly

affects people in their 20s and

    30s. Age changes dentin and

    decreases tooth sensitivity.

    Age increases gum recession

    (exposing dentin), enamel

    erosion, and tooth structure

    loss.

    Enamels hard texture

    protects the pulp and dentin.

    When it is lost, hypersensitiv-

    ity occurs. The most common

complaints are caused by coldand sweets. The pain from

    enamel loss is caused by:

    1. Acidic foods and drinks

    (sodas,sports drinks,fruits,etc.)

    2. Vigorous over-brushing,

    removing the enamel

    3. Abrasive toothpastes

    4. Using a medium or hardtoothbrush (not American

    Dental Association approved)

    5. Gum recession

    6. Use or overuse of tooth

    whitening products

    7. Clenching or grinding your

    teeth (bruxism)

Part 2 discusses the actu-al reason hypersensivity hurts,

    damaged to the pulp (nerve),

    and available treatments.

    Though February does

    not often elicit images

    of youngsters building

    campfires or playing games in

the pool, the month more syn-

    onymous with the Super Bowl

and Valentines Day is a great

time for parents to start think-ing about summer camps for

    their kids.

    Summer camp is often

    something kids look forward

    to, and something they will

    fondly recall long after they

    reach adulthood. For many

    kids, summer camp provides a

    first taste of independence, as

    youngsters spend significant

    time away from home without

their parents for the first timein their lives. But as great an

    experience as summer camp

can be for youngsters, it can

be just as difficult an experi-

ence if parents dont find the

    right fit for their children.

    Thats why it behooves par-

    ents to start thinking about

summer camps for their kids in

    winter, before camps start fill-

    ing out their rosters, which

    tends to happen in early

    spring. The following are a

    few things parents should take

    into consideration when seek-

ing a summer camp for their

    kids.

    STAFF

    The right summer camp

staff can make all the differ-

ence. Many children areunderstandably shy when

arriving at a summer camp, as

    their friends from back home

    might not be joining them.

    That can make kids hesitant

    to participate in activities or

    less enthusiastic about those

activities. But a good staff will

know how to make kids feel

    welcome, which should help

them come out of their shells

and make the most of their

    summer camp experiences.

The quality of staffs can vary

    significantly depending on the

    camp, so its important that

    parents ask camp representa-

    tives about their staffs before

    making any commitments.

Ask how long the staff has

been together and the types oftraining new and even veteran

    staff members undergo before

the start of camp season? Does

    the training include first aid

    and emergency medical train-

    ing and certification?

Its also good to ask about

    the vetting process the camp

    employs before hiring new

    staff, including the extent of

    its background checks. Are

criminal background checksconducted? How many refer-

    ences must potential staff

    members supply to be consid-

    ered for employment? A good

    camp will be forthcoming

with answers to all of your

    questions, so eliminate those

    that appear hesitant to share

    information about their staffs.

    A DAY IN THE LIFE

    When vetting camps for

kids, parents should ask whata typical day is like once the

    season hits full swing. Many

    parents want their youngsters

    to have a well-rounded experi-

    ence, while others might want

their kids to attend a more

    specialized camp, whether its

a sports camp focusing on a

    particular sport or a music

    camp devoted to helping kids

    become better musicians.

Regardless of the type of campparents are considering for

Things to consider beforechoosing a summer camp

    While there are

    many ways to help

    elderly loved ones

do all they can to maintain

health, one of the best ways to

    improve both the physical and

    mental health of senior citi-

    zens is meditation. We know

    that meditation can reduce

stress and help us relax, but

    recent studies have shown

    that meditation can also

    relieve pain, reduce the prob-

    ability of heart disease and

    improve creativity. Here are

    some other benefits of medita-

    tion:

    1. The deep breathing exer-

cises central to any program of

    meditation encourage oxygen

    enrichment to the blood.

    Senior citizens who suffer

    from digestion problems often

    see immediate relief because

    the oxygenation of their

    digestive functions is empow-

    ered through meditation. This

    extra oxygen boosts the

    immune system, heals the

    lungs and improves circula-

    tion.

    2. Meditation also causes

    increased alertness and the

    ability to interact with others

    and surroundings. The

    increased oxygen in the

    bloodstream of the elderly

    user of meditation will cause

    brain functions to improve.

    3. Because both the mind and

    the body become more

    relaxed, the mental and phys-

ical health of the individual is

    improved drastically. Seniors

    who suffer from depression

    can benefit from meditation.

    During meditation, feelings of

    happiness are created in the

    brain that increase daily hap-

    piness and satisfaction.

    4. Meditation improves physi-

    cal energy, making the senior

years just as rewarding as other

    life phases. Meditation is also

easy to learn and requires no

    certain religious affiliations.

    The fact that meditation is

flexible and easy to do makes

it a great choice for everyone,

    quickly enriching the lives of

    seniors.

    5. A study published in the

    Journal of Brain, Behavior and

    Immunity shows that eight

    weeks of training in mindful-

    ness meditation is linked with

    decreased loneliness. Aside

    from alleviating loneliness,

    mindfulness meditation has

    also been shown in past

    research to have positive

    effects on the brain linked

    with brain changes that may

    even have effects against

    mental illness.

    12/24

    Valentines Day is upon

us. This is a day to

    celebrate our loved

ones and show them we care.

We also have to take care of

    our four-legged loved ones, as

    some Valentines Day gifts and

ideas may be hazardous to our

    pets.

    The most obvious warn-

ing is: Dont let your pets eat

    chocolate. Chocolate is one of

    the traditional gifts on

    Valentines Day but can be

    very dangerous to pets, even

    life threatening. The toxic

    compounds in chocolate are

    methylxanthines, mainly

    theobromine and, less impor-

    tantly, caffeine. The amounts

    of theobromine and caffeine

vary with the type of choco-

    late. For instance, unsweet-

    ened (Bakers) chocolate con-

tains 8 to 10 times the amount

    of theobromine as milk

chocolate. This is a very com-

mon toxicity in dogs and seen

less in cats just by nature of

    their eating habits.

    Clinical signs of choco-

    late toxicity usually occur

within six to 12 hours of

    ingestion. Theobromine

affects the body as a central

    nervous system stimulant, car-

    diovascular stimulant,

    increases blood pressure and

    nausea. Therefore, common

    signs of chocolate toxicity are:

    vomiting, diarrhea, hyperac-

    tivity, tremors, seizures, fast

heart rate and, in severe cases,

    death. If your pet ingests

    chocolate, contact your vet-

    erinarian or poison control

    immediately for treatment.

    Also, knowing the type and

    quantity of chocolate ingested

    is helpful.

    Another potential hazard

for pets on this sweet holiday

    is any sugar-free gum or

    candy. They commonly con-

    tain the sugar substitute xyli-

    tol. Signs of xylitol toxicity

can be seen as quickly as 30

    minutes and causes a sudden

drop in the bodys blood sugar

    (hypoglycemia). This may

    result in weakness, depression,

    loss of coordination, seizures,

    coma and even liver failure.

    Treatment should be initiated

    immediately if ingestion

    occurs.

    Some holiday flowers,

    though they are romantic, can

be toxic for your pet. The

    biggest culprits are lilies. They

are highly toxic to cats, so

make sure your cats cant get

near them, or choose a differ-

ent variety of flower but not

tulips (the bulbs are the most

    toxic). Amaryllis, daisies,

    chrysanthemums or any flow-

ers with thorns may be poten-

    tially dangerous flowers.

    Leftover gift-wrapping or

    decorations are enticing for

curious cats. Make sure all rib-

    bons, bows and other wrap-

ping are out of your pets reach

    and cleaned up. Cats especial-

ly like chewing on strings or

    ribbons which can cause

    choking or worse, an obstruc-

    tion in the intestines that

    could require emergency sur-

    gery.

    Candles are also a nice

    touch on Valentines Day but

not to paws and fur. Dont

    leave candles unattended, as

pets can easily be burned or

    the candles could be knocked

    over, causing a fire.

    One last warning is not

to give pets as gifts. Puppies

and kittens are very cute and

cuddly but owning a pet is a

    big undertaking. Purchasing a

pet should be done in a

    responsible way and only after

a lot of research. If youre

    ready, you should consider

adopting a pet from your local

    shelter. These steps can be

    done together and are roman-

    tic and rewarding.

    Have a sweet and safe

    Valentines Day!

    cup dark brown sugar

    teaspoon pure vanilla

    extract

    Tahitian vanilla bean, split

    horizontally

teaspoon fleur de sel (seasalt) fine grains

    3 oz milk chocolate, roughly

    chopped

    3 oz dark chocolate, roughly

    chopped

    Make the dough:

    Sift the flour, cocoa and

    baking soda together into a

    bowl. Set aside.

    Put the butter in the

bowl of a stand mixer fitted

with the paddle attachment.Beat on medium speed until

    creamy. Add both sugars and

    the vanilla extract. Scrape the

    seeds from the vanilla bean

    into the bowl. Sprinkle the

salt over the top. Beat on

    medium speed just until com-

    bined.

    Reduce the speed to low.

Add the dry ingredients in 3

    additions, pulsing the mixer to

incorporate each additionbefore adding the next one.

    Pulse just until a crumbly

    dough forms. Add both

    chopped chocolates and mix

on low speed just until incor-

    porated.

    Turn the dough out onto

    a lightly floured work surface.

Knead a few times to incorpo-

    rate any crumbs.

    Divide the dough in half.

Roll each half into a log about

1 inches in diameter and 12inches long. As you roll, gen-

tly push the ends toward the

    center occasionally to prevent

    air pockets from forming and

to keep the logs at an even

    thickness.

    Wrap the logs in plastic

    wrap and refrigerate until firm,

at least 3 hours or up to 3 days.

    Bake the cookies:

Preheat the oven to 325 F.

Line the bottoms of two 12-by-18-inch sheet pans with

    parchment paper.

    Remove the logs from the

    refrigerator and unwrap them.

Using a ruler to guide you and

a sharp knife, cut each log into

    rounds inch thick. If the

dough crumbles as you cut it,

    reshape each slice. Place the

    rounds on the prepared pans,

    spacing them 1 inches apart.

Bake on the middleshelves of the oven, rotating

    the pans 180 degrees halfway

    through the baking time, until

set but soft enough to hold a

    slight indentation when

    pressed with a fingertip, about

    14 minutes. Let cool com-

pletely on the pans on wire

    racks.

    Store in an airtight con-

    tainer at room temperature for

    up to 1 week.

    Stringent lending poli-

cies and the escalatingcosts of home owner-

    ship have led many prospec-

    tive home buyers to consider

condominiums instead of sin-gle-family homes. Condos

    are typically less expensive

    than single-family homes,

which makes lenders andborrowers alike feel more

    comfortable. Lenders feel

    better because the loans

    arent as large, while borrow-

    ers are more comfortable

    because such loans allow

them to improve their stand-ing with lenders, potentially

setting the table for a low-

    interest home loan down the

    road.

    But the differences

    between buying a condo and

buying a single-family homego beyond the bottom line.

    The following are a few

    things prospective buyers

    should know about condos

    before they view any proper-

    ties.

    Condos come with fees.

    Unlike single-family homes,

    condos come with homeown-

    ers association fees. These

fees cover the cost of mainte-

nance and repairs to theproperty. This includes land-

    scaping and garbage collec-

    tion, as well as general

    repairs throughout the con-

    dominium complex. Fees

vary significantly from com-munity to community, and

the best deal is not always

    the one with the lowest

    homeowners association fees.

Low fees tend to provide less

    bang for the buck, generally

    covering only the most basic

    services. Higher fees often

    mean the community offers

more amenities, such as a pri-

vate pool and gym for resi-

dents. Some people prefersuch amenities, while others

    would rather find better deals

    on their own. But prospec-

    tive condo buyers must

include fees in their monthlybudgets when determining

how much they can afford to

    spend.

    Condos come with rules.

    Owners of single-family

    homes can create their own

    rules for their households,

    while condo owners must

agree to follow rules estab-lished by the homeowners

    association or the property

    management firm responsible

    for maintaining the commu-

    nity and enforcing the rules.

Rules may not allow pets or

only allow pets of a certain

    size. Other rules may restrict

how owners can decoratetheir condos during the holi-

day season or how they can

    furnish the exterior of their

    properties, limiting patio fur-

niture to a set number of

    chairs or tables. Some condo

owners are glad such rules are

    in place, while others might

find such stipulations intru-sive. Each community has

    different rules, and prospec-

    tive buyers should familiarize

    themselves with a communi-

    tys rules before buying any

    properties within that com-

    munity.

    Condos often have man-

agement firms. Propertymanagement firms can be

great to deal with, but they

    can be troublesome as well.

    A good property manage-

    ment firm produces satisfied

    community members who

    speak glowingly of their com-

    munities, while a poorly run

management firm can frus-trate homeowners who feel

    they are not getting what

    theyre paying for. Some

    property management firms

    fail to collect homeowners

    association fees for months at

a time, only to send letters

    demanding back dues down

    the road. Others simply dont

    live up to expectations, fail-

ing to make repairs in a time-ly manner while letting the

    property fall into disrepair. If

    possible, speak to current

    community residents about

    how the property is managed.

    If residents are not available,

    potential buyers should

    attempt to attend a home-

    owners association meeting,

which can shed light on what

its like to live within a given

community and how accessi-ble the management firm is

    to community members and

how well it tends to those

    members needs.

Condos are not as private as

    single-family homes. Much

    like apartment dwellers,

condo owners often sharewalls with neighbors. That

    means condo owners will

    have to sacrifice some priva-

    cy. Prospective buyers who

    consider privacy a top priori-

ty may want to continue liv-

    ing in an apartment until

they can afford to buy a sin-

    gle-family home. Though

    condo owners rarely have

    someone living above or

below them, sharing wallswith neighbors is still not as

    private as owning a single-

    family home.

    Condominiums are great

    options for people who want

to own their homes but dont

    have enough money or credit

history to buy a single-familyhome. But buyers must edu-

    cate themselves about con-

    dominium life before signing

    on the dotted line.

Buying a condo not the same as buying a home
