    Youve very likely driven

past our store for most of

your life on the way to

    some corporate jeweler in the

mall, but have you ever wondered

how this little jewelry store has

been here for so long? The major-ity of the other businesses around

    us have changed over several

times. One of our neighbors has

been a pizzeria, a pet store and

now a tattoo parlor. For about 26

    years weve been a local

    Pequannock business and thats

    no easy accomplishment. The rea-

son for this was the unique paring

of two friends who had both been

in different parts of the jewelry

business. This combined a gemol-ogist with years of experience in

the NYC diamond district with a

    fourth-generation jewelry manu-

    facturer.

Much of the reason for the

    success of Boston Louis Jewelers

    lies in our extensive knowledge

and experience in the field of dia-

monds and jewelry, and we openlyshare that knowledge with our

customers. And while yes, we are

just a small store in a small town,

    our connections are worldwide.

If you are shopping for an

    engagement ring or other dia-

mond jewelry, you could just buy

it from a no-faced source on the

Internet, or from a mall salesper-son with a years experience under

his belt. Before you do that,

though, you might drop by Boston

Louis just for the heck of it. We

challenge you to! We arent high-

pressure sellers. We will very like-

ly enlighten you, and even more

importantly, get you a better deal

    on a better quality diamond.

    Weve found over the years

    that pretty much everyone who

has taken the time to let us edu-cate them about diamonds has

bought from us. Were real jewel-

    ers professional jewelers who

have spent decades in the dia-

    mond trade and weve been

where we are for a long time

because we educate and care for

    our customers.

    If you are curious about

    learning more about diamonds

    before making a purchase, please

feel free to drop by Boston LouisJewelers, 151 Newark-Pompton

    Turnpike in Pequannock.

    Ialways look forward to

    confirming with my

    accountant how much I

will save each year by making

    a tax-deductible contribution

to my qualified plan. As a self-

    employed individual, I am

    allowed to contribute the

    maximum contribution to a

    simplified employee pension

    (SEP) plan $51,000 for

2013. At the federal incometax bracket of 39.6 percent,

this is a tax savings of

    $20,196. Stated differently,

    the government will pay me

    $20,196 to save $51,000.

Stated yet a different way, I

will lose $21,196 if I dont

    save the $51,000 afforded me

by the IRS for investing for

    my retirement. This makes a

    very compelling argument to

make this contribution everyyear, but is it really worth it?

    Lets envision my SEP contri-

bution as a shot glass filled

with water. Over the years, as

I continue to fund my SEP

and it continues to grow from

    the compounded rate of

return on top of the contribu-

tions, the little shot glass soon

    becomes a pitcher of water.

When Im retired and I need

to pour the water out of the

    pitcher to drink, the remain-

ing water in the pitcher willcontinue to earn interest, div-

    idends and appreciation from

    the stock market. In essence,

    the water flowing from the

pitcher through the rest of my

life could fill a bathtub to the

    brim!

    The government says

one of these vessels must be

    taxed the shot glass, the

    pitcher or the bathtub but

it leaves the choice to me.The tax-deduction I take for

    the SEP contribution is mak-

    ing the shot glass tax

    deductible. The pitcher,

    which represents the accumu-

    lation, grows tax-deferred.

    The disbursed income, repre-

    sented by the bathtub,

whether I live to spend it all

or die with a tub full of water,

    will be 100 percent taxable,

either to me or my beneficiar-

ies. With my choice to take

the deduction today, I amchoosing to tax the biggest

pile of money, the income for

the rest of my life. My kids

will bear the burden of paying

    income tax on the remainder,

not to mention NJ estate tax,

as well as a potential federal

    estate tax.

    After second thought,

    perhaps taking the deduction

on the shot glass was an

improper bet, since I will ulti-mately pay more tax on the

    biggest pile of money, the

    bathtub size portion. Yet,

    common sense dictates that I

    take the deduction now for

    the very compelling reasons

    stated in the opening para-

    graph.

    It is a very confusing

    concept, since the tax savings

    from the SEP contribution

could be saved and invested as

well to grow an even larger

amount for retirement. Sometax professionals argue that

    deductions should be taken

today since you will be in a

lower tax bracket in the future

    when retired. Many of my

    clients have found this point-

of-view not to be the case.

    Their tax bracket either

    remained the same or

    increased for various reasons,

    wreaking taxation havoc on

their annual income and ulti-mately their bequest.

What if there were a way

    to benefit from both disci-

    plines by taking the deduc-

    tions to fund your contribu-

tions to an IRA, 401k, profit-

    sharing or pension plan while

    working, then having the abil-

ity to enjoy tax-free income in

    retirement, as well as passing-

    on your wealth tax-free to

    your favorite charities, and

    your children and grandchil-

dren? The concept can beapplied for people during their

    working and portfolio accu-

    mulation years, as well as

    those individuals already

    retired with larger taxable

    IRA balances in their portfo-

    lio spending years.

    If you or someone you

know is age 70 or above,

    forced by the government to

    make the required minimum

withdrawal from their IRAand if they werent forced out,

    didnt need the money and

would rather leave it in their

    account for when they do

need it or to pass it on to their

    beneficiaries, then read care-

fully. There is a better way,

    not known by most financial

professionals or the companiesthey represent, to convert tax-

able IRA accounts to either a

    tax-free income or a tax-free

    bequest better than a Roth

    IRA.

    Turn your taxable IRA

    into a tax-free income stream

and a tax-free bequest to your

children at the same time! I

    will discuss this and demon-

    strate the technique at our

workshop on Tuesday, January28 from 13pm and repeated

    The most popular

date to get marriedin 2013 was

    October 12. More than

    24,000 couples who used

    TheKnot.com to plan

    their weddings listed 10-

    12-13 as their wedding

    dates, according to

    TheKnot.com, an online

    resource catering to cou-

    ples planning their wed-

    dings. The next most pop-

ular date in 2013 was June1. Though this might lead

    many to conclude that fall

    weddings were more popu-

    lar than summer wed-

    dings, thats not entirely

    true. TheKnot.com notes

    that June was the most

    popular month to marry in

    2013, followed by

    September and October.

    In addition, where couples

are tying the knot tends to

    influence when they

    exchange their vows. For

example, November andDecember are the most

    popular months to tie the

    knot in Florida, where

    late-spring and early sum-

    mer temperatures can be

    especially harsh.

    Probiotics, or non-harm-

    ful bacteria, arent just

    for digestion anymore.

A 30-year study from theForsyth Institute of Harvard

has shown that a few naturally

    occurring bacteria can actual-

ly fight off harmful oral bacte-

    ria. Probiora3 is a patented

    blend of these beneficial bac-

    teria that safely and effective-

    ly helps maintain a healthy

    mouth.

    Probiora3 supports dental

    and gum health by growing

below the gum line and on thechewing surfaces. It competes

    with harmful bacteria for

    nutrients and space, and helps

    reduce the bacteria that cause

    bad breath.

    These probiotics also

    naturally whiten teeth. They

    produce a continuous dose of

    hydrogen peroxide, the tooth-

    whitening chemical, as a nat-

    ural byproduct. A four-week

study shows that when replen-ished daily, these probiotics

    whitened dental surfaces

    around the clock.

    Probiora3 is free of sugar,

    wheat, gluten, dairy, soy, artifi-

cial flavors and colors, and is100 percent natural. What a

great new way to a healthy

    smile!

    Learning how to stop

    your puppy from chew-

    ing can become a diffi-

cult chore that will leave you

    frustrated, especially

    when it gets hold of

    your favorite pair of

    shoes, or when its con-

    stantly chewing on you!

    If you want to stop

    your puppy from chew-

    ing, there are a few

    things that you need to

    understand about it

    before you just blame it

    for its behavior.

    Chewing is a natu-

ral part of being a puppy.

Rather than trying to stop it

    from this natural behavior,

    you should work toward redi-

    recting the problem to anoth-

er source. Get it chew toys

and a bone that it is allowed

to gnaw on to its hearts con-

tent. It is much easier to redi-

rect a problem than to try and

    stop it completely, especially

when the problem is more of a

    human problem than a puppy

    one.

    Another thing to consid-

    er is that certain behaviors

    tend to instigate chewing,

    especially when the puppy is

chewing on you. This can lead

    to dog aggression problems

later on, so you need to nip it

in the bud now rather than

    put it off.

    Again, this is a human

problem as much as a puppy

problem. In order to stop your

    puppy from chewing on you,

you need to pay attention to

what you do that instigates it.

    Certain sudden movements,

    or aggressive behavior toward

your puppy (even in play) will

    push it into chewing. Also,

when you are playing, if it

    starts chewing on you, stop

    the activity.

    Dogs cant distinguish

    between playtime and not

    playtime. Although they love

to play, the habits that they

will pick up then will transfer

    to other times. You should

never allow your dog to play

    aggressively and chewing is

one of the easiest bad habits to

    break.

    When dogs start chew-

ing, redirect them to one of

    their play toys, and separate

    yourself from them. If the

    chewing problem persists, you

may need to keep them in a

    kennel until they learn to

    behave. Crate training can

take some time, but is very

    beneficial in stopping a wide

    variety of puppy problems,

    including it wanting to chew

    on you.

    Follow these tips to stop

    your puppy from chewing and

to get it under control. It

doesnt take much, but by pay-

    ing attention to your behavior

    and redirecting its behavior to

    an appropriate toy, you can

    get things under control.

One of the best ways to

    prevent or control

    cardiovascular dis-

ease is to eat a healthy diet.

Eating a diet rich in fruits,

    veggies, lean protein and fiber

    and, of course, low in

    greasy fast food can consid-

erably reduce the risk of heart

    disease. Here are six heart-

    healthy eating tips for seniors:

    1.Buy colorful fruits and veg-

    etables. Adults should get at

least five servings per day of

    fruits and vegetables. Make

sure you buy a variety of col-

    ored fruits and vegetables to

ensure you get the rainbow of

    benefits each color has to

    offer.

    2.Limit high-fat dairy and

meat. Buy skinless cuts of lean

meat with the least amount of

visible fat. Cuts that say loin

    after them, like sirloin and

    tenderloin, are often leaner

cuts. Fatty fish like salmon or

    trout can also help increase

    the bodys level of healthy

    omega-3s.

3.Eat plenty of nuts and high

    fiber foods. Fiber can help

    lower blood cholesterol, and it

    keeps you full, which helps

    you maintain a healthy

weight. You can find fiber in

    fruits, veggies, beans and

    whole-grain breads and cere-

als, as well as in nuts.

    4.Dont buy butter. Avoiding

    butter can help lower choles-

    terol. Consider replacing but-

    ter with a more healthful

    spread like Smart Balance,

    Benechol, or Promise, which

    contain plant sterols that may

    help lower bad cholesterol.

    5.Read nutrition labels.

    Studies show that people who

    read nutrition labels tend to

    be slimmer than those who

dont. Its easy for salt and

sugar to sneak in to your diet,

    especially with prepared

foods, so be sure to always read

    the nutrition label.

    6.Frozen or canned fruits and

    veggies are okay. Remember

    that frozen fruits and vegeta-

    bles have the same vitamins

    and minerals in them. This

    knowledge makes keeping the

    kitchen stocked with choles-

    terol- and blood pressure-low-

    ering foods a little easier.

    Choose unsalted or unsweet-

    ened varieties when possible.

    attractive and affordable design

    trend.

    ITS ONLY NATURAL

    Miami-based ASID and

    IIDA award-winning interior

    and furniture designer Bea Pila

    sees natural elements increas-

    ingly created into luxurious fur-

    nishings. Look for lamps

    embellished with geodes and

    natural gems, feather-adorned

pillows and sharkskin as a rich

    table finish. Stone and stone

    veneers make for an interesting

    organic interior wall covering,

    says Debbie Wiener of My

    Designing Solutions, as do

    sticks gathered in groups as

    triptychs or propped up against

    the wall.

    LIGHTEN UP

    Lighting can make a key

difference in a home by setting

the atmosphere of a room or

    helping showcase decor ele-

    ments. LED bulbs deliver the

    same warm glow as traditional

    incandescents but use 84 per-

cent less energy and last up to

    20 years, according to Maxwell

    Ryan, founder and CEO of

    Apartment Therapy. Interior

    design expert and

    InStyleModern.com executive

    Maria Samuels suggests multi-

    tiered chandeliers and other

    ornamental fixtures using LED

lights to give a modern twist

    instead of traditional artificial

    illumination.

    THE FURNITURE FORE-

    CAST

    Pila notes that 60s-

    inspired acrylic furnishings can

    be timeless when designed into

    a classic silhouette, with the

    pureness of the acrylics clear-

    ness creating a striking effect.

    Washington, DC designer

    Darlene Molnar predicts that

velvet sofas will be a top trend

in 2014, with jewel colors or

gray bringing a soft elegance to

rooms after years of sharp clean

Clint Parker notes that Earth-friendly, sustainable eco-furni-

    composites and fabrics such as

    hemp and sorghum making the

    concept more accessible.

    ACCESSORIZE THE POSI-

    TIVE

    Anything goes in the

    world of accessories. Pila notes

    an African influence in lamps

made of horn and Kuba cloths

fashioned into pillows, rugs andblankets, while Ian Kennedy of

    Ruby + George touts Native

    American-inspired artwork,

    rugs and antlers passed down

    from generation to generation.

    Wiener suggests gas-fired home

    fire walls under a wall-

    mounted big-screen television

that can serve as a source of

warmth and an art focal piece.

    THE SIMPLE LIFE

    Internationally recog-nized artist and award-winning

    Austin designer Pablo

    Solomon sees a continuation of

    uncluttered, simple, practical,

    multifunctional and renewable

    designs. He recommends

    adopting the mantra less is

more to focus on quality, not

quantity, when it comes to art,

    rugs and furnishings. Tie interi-

    or design with outside land-

scape views to evoke a feelingof openness and flow from the

    inside out.

    WHATS OLD IS NEW

    Los Angeles-based Linda

    Brettler, AIA, suggests finding

    creative ways to repurpose,

    recycle and reuse by relocating

pieces from other rooms in the

house or seeking out older, bet-

    ter-made items from architec-

tural salvage sites. Salvaged orantique tiles can give an

    authentic patina to a historic

    home, and Brettler recom-

mends mixing tile and stone so

    the look isnt so intense.

    21/24

    Fences serve many pur-

poses on a property andcan even add visual

appeal and value to a home. A

    fence can effectively delineate

    property borders, serve as a

safety barrier and keep pets and

    children from wandering into

    the street.

    According to Zillow, an

online real estate database, erecting a fence on a property

in an area where fences are

    common usually increases the

value of the home, putting it in

    line with similar properties

    nearby. However, this may

only be the case if the fence is

    installed professionally and

matches other fences through-out the neighborhood.

    Homeowners planning to

    install a fence should first

secure a copy of their property

surveys. A survey of the prop-

    erty is often conducted upon

    purchasing a home and/or

when the land and home is

being assessed. If you do nothave a survey, you can hire a

    professional to conduct one.

    The survey will be handy

    because it clearly marks prop-

    erty lines. Depending on the

    local regulations, fences may

need to be installed a certain

number of inches or feet with-

in the property line. Yourmunicipality and building code

office will be able to guide you

further as to what is legal.

    Reputable fencing companies

    that work in the community

should also have a good under-

    dominate next year, with

    upholstery expected to bring

    presence and sophistication

    while still delivering all-day

    comfort.

    standing of fencing regula-

    tions.

A permit is typicallyneeded to install a fence.

    Either your contractor or you

will need to apply for the per-

    mit before construction can

begin. It is best to follow the

law so that the fence can be

installed in a manner that is

    consistent with local regula-

tions and will not be subject topotentially costly removal.

    As a courtesy, speak with

    your neighbors about your

    fencing plans. The fence will

    separate your properties from

    one another, and your neigh-

    bors may have certain feelings

about what they want to look

at. Even if a neighbor is notsharing the cost, it is a good

    idea to discuss fencing with

your neighbors in an effort to

    reduce the likelihood of con-

    flict down the road. Fences

    have been points of con-

    tention between neighbors,

and you don't want a previous-

    ly amicable relationship toturn sour.

    In some instances, neigh-

bors will be excited about the

prospect of a fence and may

want to share the cost. Fencing

    contractors may offer discounts

    for multi-home installations,

so it pays to inquire with the

    neighbors for that reasonalone.

    Homes with pools may

need fences as a safety precau-

tion. Be sure they fit the proto-

    col. They may need self-latch-

    ing/locking gates to prevent

    entry to the yard.

A fence can be a good

investment, but homeownersmust take the appropriate legal

    measures and consider their

    neighbors before erecting any

    fences
