    Youve very likely driven

past our store for most of

your life on the way to

    some corporate jeweler in the

mall, but have you ever wondered

how this little jewelry store has

been here for so long? The major-ity of the other businesses around

    us have changed over several

times. One of our neighbors has

been a pizzeria, a pet store and

now a tattoo parlor. For about 26

    years weve been a local

    Pequannock business and thats

    no easy accomplishment. The rea-

son for this was the unique paring

of two friends who had both been

in different parts of the jewelry

business. This combined a gemol-ogist with years of experience in

the NYC diamond district with a

    fourth-generation jewelry manu-

    facturer.

Much of the reason for the

    success of Boston Louis Jewelers

    lies in our extensive knowledge

and experience in the field of dia-

monds and jewelry, and we openlyshare that knowledge with our

customers. And while yes, we are

just a small store in a small town,

    our connections are worldwide.

If you are shopping for an

    engagement ring or other dia-

mond jewelry, you could just buy

it from a no-faced source on the

Internet, or from a mall salesper-son with a years experience under

his belt. Before you do that,

though, you might drop by Boston

Louis just for the heck of it. We

challenge you to! We arent high-

pressure sellers. We will very like-

ly enlighten you, and even more

importantly, get you a better deal

    on a better quality diamond.

    Weve found over the years

    that pretty much everyone who

has taken the time to let us edu-cate them about diamonds has

bought from us. Were real jewel-

    ers professional jewelers who

have spent decades in the dia-

    mond trade and weve been

where we are for a long time

because we educate and care for

    our customers.

    If you are curious about

    learning more about diamonds

    before making a purchase, please

feel free to drop by Boston LouisJewelers, 151 Newark-Pompton

    Turnpike in Pequannock.

    Proponents of marriage

    may quote any number

    of reasons why couples

should tie the knot instead of

living a life of singlehood. A

    desire to raise children togeth-

er is one reason many couples

    wed, but getting hitched

might also be better for your

    health. Thats right, a growing

    body of evidence has suggest-

    ed marriage may be beneficial

for men and women from a

    health and wellness stand-

    point.A 2006 study published

    in the Journal of Epidemiology

    and Community found that,

    compared with married people,

    people who are widowed, are

    divorced/separated or have

    never married are more likely

to die earlier. In addition to a

    greater combined wealth that

    may make access to health

    insurance or better healthcare

possible, there are a number ofpossible reasons behind why

    married couples tend to be

    healthier and happier.

    Safety: Being married and

    committed to one partner

    reduces your risk of develop-

    ing a disease through intimate

    encounters. Furthermore,

married couples tend to be less

    involved in behaviors that

may put them at risk for vio-lent altercations between oth-

    ers. Research by the United

    States Justice Department has

    found that single and divorced

women are four to five times

more likely to be victims of

    violence in any given year

    than women who are married,

    while bachelors are four times

more likely to be victims of

    violent-crime than men who

    are married.HEALTH MONITORING:

    Married couples may pay

    attention to and monitor

    changes in each others health

    more so than boyfriends and

    girlfriends. Couples who can

    recognize the subtle changes

    in physical or emotional

health may be able to identify

    problems before they become

more serious. Couples mayalso be able to urge spouses to

    make appointments for rou-

    tine health screenings and fol-

    low up on doctors appoint-

    ments.

    GREATER FINANCIAL

    SECURITY: Money is a pri-

mary source of stress for many

men and women. But living in

    a dual-income household can

ease some of that stress and

the potential health problemsthat come with it. Some

    research has indicated that

married men make as much as

    40 percent more money than

    comparable single men, even

    after accounting for education

    and job history. Marriage

could be seen as an indication

    of security and trustworthi-

    ness, traits appealing to a

    company.INCREASED INTIMACY:

    According to information

    compiled by Richard Niolon

Ph.D., nearly half of all mar-

    ried people engage in intimate

    relations twice a week, com-

pared to 20 to 24 percent of

    single and cohabitating men

    and women. Sex releases

    endorphins that improve

    mood, can be classified as

moderate exercise, creates afeel-good environment that

    can reduce stress and pro-

    motes further contact

    between couples.

    IMPROVES MENTAL

    HEALTH: Many people joke

    that getting married removes

    freedoms that lead to happi-

    ness, but researchers find that

this isnt the case. In their

    book, The Case for Marriage:

    Why Married People Are

    Happier, Healthier, and Better

    off Financially, authors Linda

Waite and Maggie Gallagherfound married men are only

half as likely as bachelors and

    one-third as likely as divorced

guys to take their own lives.

Wives are also much less like-

ly to commit suicide than sin-

    gle, divorced or widowed

    women. Married people are

much less likely to have prob-

    lems with alcohol abuse or

    illegal drugs. An international

    study of 17 developed nations

from Steven Stack and J. Ross

    Eshleman found that married

    persons have a significantly

    higher level of happiness than

persons who are not married, even after controlling for gen-

    der, age, education, children,

    church attendance, financial

    satisfaction, and self-reported

    health.

    There are many health-

    related benefits to getting

    married. Men and women

about to enter into a new life

    together can add good health

to the reason why they are

    happy about their upcoming

    nuptials.

    Ialways look forward to

    confirming with my

    accountant how much I

will save each year by making

    a tax-deductible contribution

to my qualified plan. As a

self-employed individual, Iam allowed to contribute the

    maximum contribution to a

    simplified employee pension

    (SEP) plan $51,000 for

    2013. At the federal income

    tax bracket of 39.6 percent,

this is a tax savings of

    $20,196. Stated differently,

    the government will pay me

    $20,196 to save $51,000.

Stated yet a different way, I

will lose $21,196 if I dontsave the $51,000 afforded me

by the IRS for investing for

    my retirement. This makes a

    very compelling argument to

    make this contribution every

year, but is it really worth it?

    Lets envision my SEP

    contribution as a shot glass

    filled with water. Over the

years, as I continue to fund

my SEP and it continues to

grow from the compoundedrate of return on top of the

    contributions, the little shot

    glass soon becomes a pitcher

    of water. When Im retired

and I need to pour the water

out of the pitcher to drink,

    the remaining water in the

    pitcher will continue to earn

    interest, dividends and appre-

    ciation from the stock mar-

    ket. In essence, the water

flowing from the pitcherthrough the rest of my life

could fill a bathtub to the

    brim!

    The government says

one of these vessels must be

    taxed the shot glass, the

    pitcher or the bathtub but

it leaves the choice to me.

    The tax-deduction I take for

    the SEP contribution is mak-

    ing the shot glass tax

deductible. The pitcher, which represents the accumu-

    lation, grows tax-deferred.

    The disbursed income, repre-

    sented by the bathtub,

whether I live to spend it all

or die with a tub full of water,

    will be 100 percent taxable,

either to me or my beneficiar-

ies. With my choice to take

    the deduction today, I am

    choosing to tax the biggest

pile of money, the income forthe rest of my life. My kids

will bear the burden of paying

    income tax on the remainder,

not to mention NJ estate tax,

as well as a potential federal

    estate tax.

    After second thought,

    perhaps taking the deduction

on the shot glass was an

improper bet, since I will ulti-

mately pay more tax on the

biggest pile of money, thebathtub size portion. Yet,

    common sense dictates that I

    take the deduction now for

    the very compelling reasons

    stated in the opening para-

    graph.

    It is a very confusing

    concept, since the tax savings

    from the SEP contribution

    could be saved and invested

as well to grow an even larger

amount for retirement. Sometax professionals argue that

    Probiotics, or non-harm-

    ful bacteria, arent just

    for digestion anymore.

A 30-year study from theForsyth Institute of Harvard

has shown that a few naturally

    occurring bacteria can actual-

ly fight off harmful oral bacte-

    ria. Probiora3 is a patented

    blend of these beneficial bac-

    teria that safely and effective-

    ly helps maintain a healthy

    mouth.

    Probiora3 supports dental

    and gum health by growing

below the gum line and on thechewing surfaces. It competes

    with harmful bacteria for

    nutrients and space, and helps

    reduce the bacteria that cause

    bad breath.

    These probiotics also

    naturally whiten teeth. They

    produce a continuous dose of

    hydrogen peroxide, the tooth-

    whitening chemical, as a nat-

    ural byproduct. A four-week

study shows that when replen-ished daily, these probiotics

    whitened dental surfaces

    around the clock.

    Probiora3 is free of sugar,

    wheat, gluten, dairy, soy, artifi-

cial flavors and colors, and is100 percent natural. What a

great new way to a healthy

    smile!

    deductions should be taken

today since you will be in a

lower tax bracket in the future

    when retired. Many of my

    clients have found this point-

of-view not to be the case.

    Their tax bracket either

    remained the same or increased

    for various reasons, wreaking

    taxation havoc on their annual

    income and ultimately their

    bequest.

What if there were a way

    to benefit from both disciplines

    by taking the deductions to

    fund your contributions to an

    IRA, 401k, profit-sharing or

    pension plan while working,

then having the ability to enjoy

    tax-free income in retirement,

    as well as passing-on your

    wealth tax-free to your favorite

    charities, and your children

    and grandchildren? The con-

cept can be applied for people

    during their working and port-

    folio accumulation years, as

    well as those individuals

    already retired with larger tax-

    able IRA balances in their

    portfolio spending years.

    If you or someone you

know is age 70 or above, forced

by the government to make the

    required minimum withdrawal

from their IRA and if they

    werent forced out, didnt need

    the money and would rather

leave it in their account for

when they do need it or to pass

it on to their beneficiaries, then

read carefully. There is a better

way, not known by most finan-

    cial professionals or the compa-

    nies they represent, to convert

    taxable IRA accounts to either

    a tax-free income or a tax-free

    bequest better than a Roth

    IRA.

    Turn your taxable IRA

    into a tax-free income stream

and a tax-free bequest to your

children at the same time! I

    will discuss this and demon-

    strate the technique at our

    workshop on Tuesday, January

28 from 13pm and repeated at

79pm. The location is 901 Rt.

    23 South in Pompton Plains,

    above Lakeland Bank.

    On Wednesday, January

    29, our workshop will discuss

    strategies and techniques to

    mitigate NJ estate taxes. On

Thursday, January 30 is the ses-

    sion on guaranteeing your

    retirement income for the rest

of your life and spouses life,

too. Here you will learn how to

benefit from rises in the stock

market without the risk of loss

    to your monthly income.

If you plan to retire, are

    already retired, hate paying

taxes or being forced to take

    your minimum required distri-

bution from your IRA and pay-

ing taxes on that, you do not

    want to miss this informational

    workshop program. Mark your

    calendars for January 28, 29

and 30 to attend this educa-

tional event. There is no cost,

no fee and no obligation. No

    kidding! My only request is

    that you register in advance.

    Many couples find

    themselves bom-

    barded with ques-

    tions the moment they become

    engaged, and perhaps no ques-

    tions is more common than,

    When is the wedding?

    Although a number of

couples would prefer to bask in

    the excitement of their engage-

    ment, some couples feel pres-

sured to rush into picking a

    wedding date. Choosing a wed-

    ding date without giving it

    much consideration may make

    things more difficult down the

    road. Rather than jumping

    head first into any decisions,

    couples should give thought to

any and all dates and decide if

there are certain times of the

year they want to tie the knot

    or avoid.

    SEASON

    When thinking about

    potential wedding dates, it

helps to have a place to start.

Some couples find it helpful to

    start with a particular season

and then narrow it down from

there. Decide if you prefer the

lush greenery of summer or the

    amazing color spectrum of an

    autumn afternoon. Perhaps you

    envision arriving at the cere-

    mony with a snow-packed

    landscape amid twinkling holi-

    day lights? Think about the

    season when you feel most

    happy and then determine if

that time of year is doable.

    MONTH

    Certain months may seem

perfect, but not for busy profes-

    sionals or those with limited

    vacation time at their disposal.

    For example, early spring may

    not be good for accountants

    tallying year-end numbers.

    Teachers may feel most com-

fortable tying the knot in the

    summer when they already

have days off. If you run a pool

    business or a lawn maintenance

    company, then the summer

might not be so good. Keep

    these factors in mind.

    HOLIDAYS

    Some people would like to

tie their wedding day to a par-

    ticular holiday. Valentines Day

    is popular for weddings thanks

    to the romantic sentiments

    synonymous with the holiday,

    while some couples prefer

    Halloween or Christmas wed-

    dings. Holiday weddings can be

    exciting, but they also produce

    significant obstacles that cou-

ples who choose to get married

during other times of year dont

    have to worry about. Guests

may not want to travel or spend

time away from their families to

    attend a holiday wedding.

Having a wedding during a hol-

    iday may mean competing for

    vendors and reception spaces.

    Prices on everything from food

    to flowers to airline tickets

could be higher as vendors cash

    in on customer demand.

    DAY OF THE WEEK

    Its less expensive for cou-

ples to get married on Fridays

    and Sundays than Saturday

    afternoons or evenings.

    Couples may think that the

money saved will be well worth

it, but they also should think

    about how this decision may

    affect their guests. A Friday

    wedding requires people to take

    off from work or school.

    Sunday weddings may be

    slightly more convenient, but

those who have to get back to

work on Monday may be tired

    from late-night festivities.

    Couples should anticipate

some guests not making it to

    their weddings when those

    weddings are not on Saturdays.

    RELIGIOUS

    CONSTRAINTS

    Couples having religious

    ceremonies should consult with

their houses of worship as to

    which dates are acceptable.

    Some will not have weddings

    on days of religious observa-

tion. It is wise to consult with a

    church, synagogue or mosque

    before booking any other com-

ponents of the wedding so that

you are certain your chosen day

    is acceptable.

    ANY AVAILABLE DATES

    Your wedding date may be

dictated by your caterer or wed-

ding hall. If you have a particu-

lar venue in mind, you may be

    limited by their availability.

This is a concession you will

need to make if your heart is set

    on this particular location.

    Planning a wedding can

be exciting. But the ball cannot

    get rolling until couples first

choose the day they will tie the

    knot.

    Learning how to stop

    your puppy from chew-

    ing can become a diffi-

cult chore that will leave you

    frustrated, especially

    when it gets hold of

    your favorite pair of

    shoes, or when its con-

    stantly chewing on you!

    If you want to stop

    your puppy from chew-

    ing, there are a few

    things that you need to

    understand about it

    before you just blame it

    for its behavior.

    Chewing is a natu-

ral part of being a puppy.

Rather than trying to stop it

    from this natural behavior,

    you should work toward redi-

    recting the problem to anoth-

er source. Get it chew toys

and a bone that it is allowed

to gnaw on to its hearts con-

tent. It is much easier to redi-

rect a problem than to try and

    stop it completely, especially

when the problem is more of a

    human problem than a puppy

    one.

    Another thing to consid-

    er is that certain behaviors

    tend to instigate chewing,

    especially when the puppy is

chewing on you. This can lead

    to dog aggression problems

later on, so you need to nip it

in the bud now rather than

    put it off.

    Again, this is a human

problem as much as a puppy

problem. In order to stop your

    puppy from chewing on you,

you need to pay attention to

what you do that instigates it.

    Certain sudden movements,

    or aggressive behavior toward

your puppy (even in play) will

    push it into chewing. Also,

when you are playing, if it

    starts chewing on you, stop

    the activity.

    Dogs cant distinguish

    between playtime and not

    playtime. Although they love

to play, the habits that they

will pick up then will transfer

    to other times. You should

never allow your dog to play

    aggressively and chewing is

one of the easiest bad habits to

    break.

    When dogs start chew-

ing, redirect them to one of

    their play toys, and separate

    yourself from them. If the

    chewing problem persists, you

may need to keep them in a

    kennel until they learn to

    behave. Crate training can

take some time, but is very

    beneficial in stopping a wide

    variety of puppy problems,

    including it wanting to chew

    on you.

    Follow these tips to stop

    your puppy from chewing and

to get it under control. It

doesnt take much, but by pay-

    ing attention to your behavior

    and redirecting its behavior to

    an appropriate toy, you can

    get things under control.

    Renew. Rejuvenate.

    Reinvigorate. The

    same objectives peo-

    ple have when making their

    personal New Years resolu-

tions can be just as easily be

    applied to their homes.

Theres no better time to give

a home a fresh look, whether

    its incorporating a new color

    palette, adding accessories,

    repurposing furniture or put-

    ting something interesting up

    on the walls.

    A KALEIDOSCOPE OF

    COLOR

    Residential interior

    designer Gary McBournie rec-

    ommends happy hues such as

    turquoise for a kitchen, char-

treuse for a dining room and

    coral for a bedroom. Roger

    Hazard, a Sharon Springs, NY

    designer who starred in the

    Emmy-nominated Sell This

    House, agrees that color

    palettes will embrace a variety

    of bold, punchy accent colors

but also notes a seismic shift

    in neutrals from the brown

    fatigue of browns and beiges

    to bright gallery whites and

    truly neutral grays. Purples

can be paired with accents of

    copper and well-worn leather

    in a masculine den; layered

with gold, gray and white for

    an elegant bedroom; or high-

    lighted against subway tile

    and chrome fixtures for a

    statement master bathroom.

    EVERY WALL HAS A

    STORY

    Todd Imholte, president

    of Murals Your Way, predicts

that wall murals will be even

    more popular next year as

    more homeowners and busi-

    ness owners embrace this

    unique, distinctive way to

    transform any room. Simple to

    install and remove, Murals

    Your Ways more than

    750,000 images, along with

the ability to create a personal

    mural from a photograph,

    make wall murals an attrac-

    tive and affordable design

    trend.

    ITS ONLY NATURAL

    Miami-based ASID and

    IIDA award-winning interior

    and furniture designer Bea

    Pila sees natural elements

    increasingly created into luxu-

    rious furnishings. Look for

    lamps embellished with geo-

    des and natural gems, feather-

    adorned pillows and sharkskin

as a rich table finish. Stone

and stone veneers make for an

    interesting organic interior

    wall covering, says Debbie

    Wiener of My Designing

    Many brides-to-be

    and even some

    g r o o m s - t o - b e ,

    express concern about their

    weight in the weeks and

    months leading up to their

    wedding. Losing weight is a

    goal for many engaged cou-

    ples, but its important that

couples who want to shed a

    few extra pounds dont sacri-

fice safety for the sake of slim-

    ming down.

    According to a Cornell

    University study of 273

    women with a wedding day

    approaching, 70 percent

wanted to lose more than 20

    pounds before their weddings.

    However, reality indicates

that a weight loss of 5 to 10

    pounds is more attainable

more so if the weight loss reg-

imen is spread out over sever-

    al weeks. The term brideo-

    rexia has entered the vernac-

ular, and it is associated with

    brides who are taking extreme

    measures to lose weight.

    Taking laxatives, engaging in

    fluid-only diets and even

using tobacco or drugs to serve

    as appetite suppressants are

    just some of the measures

    some brides have taken to

    shed weight before their wed-

    ding days.

    There is no magic formu-

la to shed pounds, but there

    are certain ways to jump-start

    and maintain the process of

    healthy weight loss so brides

    can look slimmer and healthy

    for their big day.

    Eat. Although initial calorie

    curbing can help shed weight,

    eventually your body may

    adapt to your new eating

    habits or go into survival

    mode, which means conserv-

    ing fat reserves. Researchers at

    Penn State University found

    that fasting signals to your

body that it is being starved,

    triggering a lower metabolic

    rate. Brides-to-be should

    never cut out food entirely.

    Eating anything less than

    1,200 calories a day will

encourage the body to try to

    conserve energy by lowering

    its metabolism. Severe calorie

    restriction is not an effective

    way to lose weight.

    Step up your exercise regi-

    men. Reducing food intake

alone will not help you lose

weight quickly. The goal is to

    burn more calories than you

    consume. Therefore, adding

    more cardiovascular activity

to your routine can help burn

    calories more efficiently.

    According to a clinical study

    from researchers at Italys

    University of Padua published

    in the 2011 International

    Journal of Sports Nutrition

    and Exercise Metabolism, eat-

ing a light meal before exercis-

ing helps you burn more fat

    and keeps your body burning

fat even 24 hours after the

    exercise.

    Reduce sodium intake.

    Sodium doesnt necessarily

lead to weight gain, but it can

    make it appear so. Sodium

    contributes to water retention

in the body, which may make

    you appear heavier or bloated.

Cut back on foods that are

    high in sodium, especially as

    the wedding draws close, to

    reduce water retention.

    Italian Restaurant

    Findingthe RightRestaurant

    for YourDinnerParty

Over the last couple of years, dining out has become an even bigger luxury than itonce was. Thanks to the struggling economy, many people have decided to cutback on spending, and dining out has become casualty of such events.

While the economy is gradually rebounding, dining out is still largely reserved forspecial occasions among those whose memory of the recession is still fresh. However, dining out does remain a strong choice when hosting a special occasion such as a birthdayparty or anniversary celebration. When choosing a restaurant to have such a gathering, consider the following tips to ensure that rare restaurant night out goes off without a hitch.

    NEWwhats

    in dining?

Look for versatility in a menu. Whendining out, the emphasis is obviously on thefood. Couples might enjoy certainrestaurants they have previously patronized, but that does not necessarily make therestaurant ideal for a party. When shoppingfor a restaurant, look for one that boasts aversatile menu that can cater to a vast arrayof palates. Especially for larger parties, theversatility of the menu is very important.Restaurants that boast a large entreeselection that includes meat, poultry, seafood, and even vegetarian dishes ensures

each guest has options. Examine the elbow room. Because diningout has become such a luxury, comfortshould be another key consideration. Look

for a restaurant that provides ample elbowroom so everyone can relax and wont feelcrowded.

Be sure there are places to park. Chancesare, most guests will be driving to the party. While it seems like an afterthought, therestaurant should provide ample, and ideallyfree, parking. Avoid restaurants that chargefor valet service or inquire if such servicecan be included on the tab ahead of time.

Reserve well in advance. If its a trulyspecial occasion, be sure to begin the process

of finding a restaurant as early as possibleand make a reservation the moment adecision is made. Reservations can alwaysbe cancelled should things not work out.

    O

ne of the best ways to

    prevent or control

    cardiovascular dis-

ease is to eat a healthy diet.Eating a diet rich in fruits,

    veggies, lean protein and fiber

    and, of course, low in

    greasy fast food can consid-

erably reduce the risk of heart

    disease. Here are six heart-

    healthy eating tips for seniors:

    1.Buy colorful fruits and veg-

    etables. Adults should get at

least five servings per day of

    fruits and vegetables. Make

sure you buy a variety of col-

    ored fruits and vegetables to

ensure you get the rainbow of

    benefits each color has to

    offer.

    2.Limit high-fat dairy and

meat. Buy skinless cuts of lean

meat with the least amount of

visible fat. Cuts that say loin

    after them, like sirloin and

    tenderloin, are often leaner

cuts. Fatty fish like salmon or

    trout can also help increase

    the bodys level of healthy

    omega-3s.

3.Eat plenty of nuts and highfiber foods. Fiber can help

    lower blood cholesterol, and it

    keeps you full, which helps

    you maintain a healthy

weight. You can find fiber in

    fruits, veggies, beans and

    whole-grain breads and cere-

als, as well as in nuts.

    4.Dont buy butter. Avoiding

    butter can help lower choles-

terol. Consider replacing but-ter with a more healthful

    spread like Smart Balance,

    Benechol, or Promise, which

    contain plant sterols that may

    help lower bad cholesterol.

    5.Read nutrition labels.

    Studies show that people who

    read nutrition labels tend to

    be slimmer than those who

dont. Its easy for salt and

sugar to sneak in to your diet,

    especially with prepared foods,

so be sure to always read the

    nutrition label.

    6.Frozen or canned fruits and

    veggies are okay. Remember

    that frozen fruits and vegeta-

    bles have the same vitamins

    and minerals in them. This

    knowledge makes keeping the

    kitchen stocked with choles-

terol- and blood pressure-low-ering foods a little easier.

    Choose unsalted or unsweet-

    ened varieties when possible.

    Identify sources of empty

calories. Fruit juices, soda andother beverages are often the

    culprits with regards to unnec-

    essary calorie consumption.

    Therefore, choose your bever-

ages wisely and limit them to

    water, teas and unsweetened

drinks. If you want to drink

    fruit juice, consider diluting it.

    In addition, most alcoholic

beverages have 100 calories ormore. While it may be tempt-

    ing to celebrate with wine,

    champagne and mixed drinks

    during your engagement peri-

    od, your waistline may ulti-

mately pay the price for such

    indulgences.

    Hire a good photographer. A

    camera allegedly adds 10

pounds, a reason many couplespanic about their wedding day.

    A photo is a 2D image of a 3D

    object. Therefore, the photo

    reduces depth perception and

    flattens an image, which may

    make some items look like

they have more bulk. A profes-

    sional photographer will know

    how to manipulate lighting

and angles of the camera toensure a more flattering shot.

    Eat smaller portions.

Oftentimes, its not a matter of

what you are eating but how

    much. Most portion sizes

    served in restaurants or even

at home are double or triple

the amount that you should be

    eating. When in doubt, cut

everything in half.Fill up on fiber or protein.

Instead of resorting to pills to

    suppress an appetite, simply

eat foods that will fill you up

    naturally. High-fiber foods

will bulk up in the stomach

    and keep you feeling satiated

longer. The same can be said

    for lean proteins, which take

longer to digest, thus fendingoff hunger pangs.

    While losing weight for a

    wedding is many couples ulti-

mate goal, the best way to

tackle this task is in a healthy,

    responsible manner.

    Memorial.

    inspired artwork, rugs and

antlers passed down from gen-eration to generation. Wiener

    suggests gas-fired home fire

    walls under a wall-mounted

    big-screen television that can

serve as a source of warmth

    and an art focal piece.

    THE SIMPLE LIFE

    Internationally recog-nized artist and award-win-

    ning Austin designer Pablo

    Solomon sees a continuation

    of uncluttered, simple, practi-

    cal, multifunctional and

renewable designs. He recom-mends adopting the mantra

less is more to focus on qual-

    ity, not quantity, when it

comes to art, rugs and furnish-

    ings. Tie interior design with

    outside landscape views to

    evoke a feeling of openness

and flow from the inside out.

    WHATS OLD IS NEW

    AGAIN

    Los Angeles-based Linda

Brettler, AIA, suggests findingcreative ways to repurpose,

recycle and reuse by relocat-ing pieces from other rooms in

the house or seeking out older,

    better-made items from archi-

    tectural salvage sites. Salvaged

or antique tiles can give an

    authentic patina to a historic

    home, and Brettler recom-

    mends mixing tile and stone

so the look isnt so intense.

    FINDING YOUR COM-

    FORT ZONE

    According to ElissaMorgante, principal at

    Morgante Wilson Architects

    in Chicago, people are moving

    toward much more casual and

    interactive living.-This trans-

lates into making all rooms in

    the home inviting and multi-

    functional, to foster together-

    ness in comfortable spaces that

    will actually be used.

    Hazard adds that practi-

cality and individuality willdominate next year, with

    upholstery expected to bring

    presence and sophistication

    while still delivering all-day

    comfort.
