    Who would have

    thought back in

    September 1963 that

    Gloria Frances would be making

history, still tapping away 50 yearslater? After thousands of students

and a reputation as one of

    North Jerseys premiere

    dance schools, the Gloria

    Frances School of

    Performing Arts is proud

    to be celebrating its

    50th season.

    Gloria began danc-

ing at age of three at

    many venues, including

the famous Steel Pier inAtlantic City. Gloria was the

    recipient of many scholarship

    awards, with which she furthered

her education in New York City

with such greats as Luigi, Frank

Hatchett and Bob Audy. It was

during this time she realized she

had a love for teaching dance.

This love inspired her to open her

own dancing school at the age of

    18. In September 1963, in the

    Preakness Shopping Center,

    Gloria began influencing and

sharing her love of dance for the

    children of Wayne and the

    surrounding areas.

Over the years, she has been

an inspiration and a positive role

model for many of her students.

They have gone on to perform in

Broadway musicals and hit TVshows, and many have even

    opened their own dancing stu-

    dios.

    I want my students to

feel that they are part of

    a special family here at

    the school. Whether

    youre a recreational

    dancer or an aspiring

    dancer, everyone is

    always welcome at our

school, said Frances. Ivebeen very fortunate. My

husband Joe Zisa and my sons

Ron and Tim have always allowed

me to share my dance family with

    them.

And a family feeling it is!

Her son Ron has been the busi-

    ness administrator of the school

since 1994. The teaching staff is

made up of an ensemble of profes-

    sional choreographers and experi-

    enced teachers, including

Stefania Alves, Jessica DeMarco,Christan Meyer, Jacqui and

    Trisha Tookmanian, and Erica

Zisa, who have all been with

Gloria since the age of three.

Its a great place to be, said

    Ron. Everybody here loves what

    they do and it shows.

    The Gloria Frances School

of Performing Arts is also home

    to the award winning dance

    troupe, Dance Edition. Formed by

Gloria in 1985, the DanceEdition is a highly competitive

group that has given the studio

    recognition both nationally and

    regionally. They won the 2013

    Presidents Cup Award and

    National Champions at the

    Dance Educators of America

    Spa 23 Swim School

Swim School is a connuous weekly swim instrucon program designed to

offer children an opportunity to learn and master the fundamentals of

swimming at their own pace. Constantly measuring the progress of each

individual student, the instructor will guide students through the various levelsof Swim School unl swimming competency has been achieved.

    Many unlicensed,

    u n p r o f e s s i o n a l ,

    unqualified people

    within the financial services

    profession, along with the

    media, have rendered inaccu-

rate and negative opinionsabout annuities. These opin-

    ions are sometimes picked up

and espoused on TV, radio, in

    newsprint and taken as gospel

    by many unsuspecting mem-

bers of the public. For these

    and other reasons, far too

    many people have a misguided

    opinion about these magnifi-

    cent retirement vehicles

    designed to produce, sustain

and guarantee an income forthe rest of a persons life, and

his spouses life, if so elected. If

you are one of these people,

please invest a few minutes toread this for some enlighten-

    ment that may positively

    impact your financial life.

    First, a few facts.

    1.Only an annuity can guaran-

tee you an income for the rest

of your life. No other invest-

    ment has this characteristic.

The guarantee is based on the

claims-paying ability of theinsurance company selected.

    The insurance company is fur-

ther backed up by the state in

    which the company is domi-

ciled, as well as the state in

    which the purchase was made,

    if different. (State guarantees

    have limitations and should be

    investigated and understood

    fully before investing. Any

    competent agent or represen-

tative can obtain this informa-tion for you.)

    2.All annuities have a death

    benefit principal guarantee,

    even those that allow for

    investments directly into stock

    and bond funds, which have

    the potential for decline.

    These death benefit guarantees

    have optional language, if

    selected, that offer guaranteed

annual increases in the deathbenefit payout even if perform-

ance causes a decline in value.

The best part is that there is no

    medical qualification to secure

    this feature.

    3.Annuities offer living benefit

riders that allow for a com-

    pounded annual increase in a

    withdrawal or income base

    which, in turn, enhances the

guaranteed annual lifetimeincome stream when the client

elects to receive it. This is

    called a roll-up feature.

4.Variable annuities also offerliving benefit riders that will

set the withdrawal base to the

    highest yearly, quarterly,

    monthly or even daily value

    that will determine the life-

time income. So if the market

    causes your annuity value to

decline just before you retire or

    want to initiate withdrawals

    from your contract, the with-

    drawal calculation will be

based on the best anniversaryyour annuity ever had! In

    other words, your annual

    income will never be affected

by market declines and is guar-

    anteed for life!

    5.Some Annuities offer

    enhanced payout benefits

    should the annuitant enter a

    nursing home, suffer cognitive

    impairment or be unable to

perform some of the activitiesof daily living, like bathing,

    feeding, dressing, continence

    or transferring from room to

room. Some even offerenhanced death benefits in

    addition to living benefits.

    Better optional riders offer

    both!

    6.Traditional fixed and fixed

    indexed annuities both pay a

    lifetime minimum guaranteed

rate of interest that grows tax-

    deferred until withdrawn.

    Variable annuities are mutual

fund-like investments thatoffer greater growth potential

    than the other two annuity

    types, but have the potential

for decline in value unlike the

    other two. However, with a

    death benefit guarantee as well

    as a joint lifetime-income rider

    and tax deferral, variable

    annuities are a far superior

    alternative to mutual funds.

    always worth more than the

    previous one, a traditional

fixed annuity (TFA) is for you.

    For accepting a return that

would never be negative in a

    declining stock market, but a

rate of return that has the

    potential to be significantly

higher than a TFA in periods

of a rising stock market, a fixed

    indexed annuity (FIA) is for

you. If you desire the upside

    benefits of various equity and

    bond funds without the agony

of a reduced income if the mar-

kets falter, plus a guarantee of a

never-ending income streamfor as long as you and your

    spouse survive, a variable

    annuity (VA) with a living

    benefit rider is for you.

    Which would I recom-

    mend for your portfolio desig-

    nated for producing lifetime

    retirement income necessary

    to survive and prosper? My

    answer is all three! Who

    wouldnt desire unlimited

upside potential with nodownside risk to their income

(VA)? Who would balk at a

    daily guarantee of interest

(TFA) or the ability to profit

    in a rising market while

    exempting the losses in a

    downward cycle (FIA)?

    Some negative prognosti-

cators would argue that all of

    that guaranteed language costs

a fortune in fees and hinders

performance. However, if theguaranteed benefits purchased

    were ever needed because your

    accounts ran out of money,

    how expensive were they?

Even with no money left in

    your account, the highest guar-

    anteed income continues to be

    deposited into your checkbook

    each and every month.Withdrawing money

    from your portfolio during

    negative market cycles creates

a sinking fund. The TFA and

    FIA do not experience losses

    from negative markets and the

    VA which may decline

    offers a lifetime income guar-

antee that will never reduce or

    cease until you and your

    spouse cease. When compared

to any other stock market-based alternative when sys-

    tematically withdrawing, there

    always exists the possibility of

running out of funds except in

    a properly structured VA,

    where that would be impossi-

    ble. Remember that IRAs due

    to the required minimum dis-

    tribution rules are guaranteed

    sinking funds. Live long

    enough and the government

ensures you that they will bedepleted. But with a living

    benefit rider on your IRA

    annuity, when the account is

    depleted the income continues

    anyway and at the highest

level it ever was! Where are

    those negative pundits now?

    To continue this topic of

conversation and to learn awhole lot more with written

    evidence and proof of the

    statements made herein, please

call me for a no-cost and no-

    obligation appointment. Your

    portfolio will thank you!

    Astory unfolds nearly

    every week at Boston

    Louis Jewelers in

    Pequannock.

Being in the estate-buy-ing business for over 25 years,

    youd think we would have

    seen everything a jeweler can

    see, said co-owner Bud Mazzo.

But its not true! We are still

    constantly surprised!

    Its a common occurrence

for someone to come in with an

inherited jewelry box full to the

    brim with who-knows-what.

They usually feel there is noth-

ing of value and were about to

throw it away, but they almostalways find something interest-

ing. While the majority is usu-

    ally old plastic costume jewelry,

we often find coins from the

    1800s, Art Deco and Art

    Nouveau pieces, and antique

    pocket watches. There are

    always gold and silver items,

    and things that are gold-filled,

which is about the same price

    as sterling silver.

    Some folks are looking to

know what they have, whileothers want to sell items that

    have no sentimental value to

    help pay bills. Either way,

    Boston Louis doesnt charge for

the analysis, as the adventure is

    always so much fun!

    Co-owner Ken Boston

    The main differences

    are: Strength of

    bleaching agent. For

    starters, over-the-counter home

    use products and dentist-super-

    vised at-home products usually

    contain a lower strength-

    bleaching agent (from 10%

    carbamide peroxide-which is

    equivalent to about 3 percent

    hydrogen peroxide and up to

22% carbamide peroxide). In-office, professionally applied

    tooth whitening products con-

    tain hydrogen peroxide in con-

    centrations ranging from 15 to

    43 percent.

    Mouthpiece trays. With den-

    tist-supervised at-home bleach-

    ing products, your dentist will

    take an impression of your

    teeth and make a mouthpiece

tray that is customized to exact-ly fit your teeth. This cus-

    tomization allows for maximum

    contact between the whitening

gel, which is applied to the

    mouthpiece tray, and the teeth.

    A custom-made tray also mini-

    mizing the gels contact with

    gum tissue. Over-the-counter

    whitening products do contain

    a mouthpiece tray, but the

    one-size-fits-all approach

means that the fit will not be

    exact. Ill-fitting trays can irri-

tate the gum and soft tissue by

allowing more bleaching gel toseep onto these tissues. With

    in-office procedures, the

    bleaching agent is applied

    directly to the teeth.

    Additional protective meas-

ures. In the office setting, your

dentist will apply either a gel to

the gum tissue or use a rubber

    shield (which slides over the

    teeth) prior to treatment to

protect your gums and oral cav-ity from the effects of the

    bleaching. Over-the-counter

    products dont provide these

    extra protective measures.

    Speed of the bleaching

    process. Dentist-supervised at-

    home bleaching and over-the-

    counter bleaching products

    typically need to be applied

every day for 1 or 2 hours or

every overnight for up to 4

weeks. In-office bleaching pro-vides the quickest and most

    effective way to whiten teeth.

    With in-office bleaching, the

    whitening product is applied

    directly to the teeth. These

products can be used in combi-

    nation with heat, a special

light, and/or a laser. The light

    and/or heat accelerate the

    whitening process. Results are

    seen in only 1, 30- to 60-

minute treatment. To achievedramatic results, however, sev-

    eral appointments are usually

recounts a funny story: A long-

    time client of Boston Louis

    whose grandmother had passed

on and was left two large stor-

age bins of junk. She had

been mortified to bring it in to

have analyzed because it wasthe embarrassing evidence that

    her grandmother had been one

of those folks who stayed up

    late, ordering jewelry from

    cable TV shows at an

    unhealthy frequency.

The client said that if the

channel offered a ring for sale,

    her grandmother would order it

    in every color stone available,

    and then she never even

opened the boxes when theywere delivered. Eventually the

    channel banned this woman

    from buying any more jewelry,

    so the grandmother would then

buy it through a friend. The

    clients family was horrified.

    The analysis of the bins

took nearly four hours, but mid-

    way through, Boston noticed

    through looking at the old

invoices that many of the items

purchased were done beforegold and silver had skyrocket-

ed. As horrified as the client

    was, much of her grandmothers

    jewelry was now worth about

30 percent more than she had

paid for it! If the grandmother

had put her money into smartthings like real estate or stocks,

she would have lost money. So

    you never know!

    Ihear from people that they

    are great networkers

    because they attended

    three events last week. Sorry,

    but networking has nothing to

do with how many events you

    attend. The only definition of

    networking is how many sales

leads you gave out to other

    people that they closed in

    sales and then received pay-

    ment. Results are the only

    thing that matters. Everything

else is just you being a sales

    person.

    By generating a sales

    lead that someone else

    closed in business and was

paid you created a need for

    someone to find you business.

And the greater the ratio of

    given versus received, the

    greater the pressure on the

    other person because you are

going to find someone else to

give leads to in the same

industry if they dont step up

    their game.

    Someone handing you a

    business card without them

warming up the person to you

calling their contact is a waste

    of your time. Yes, something

    may happen, but the chances

are so small that you can

    spend your time doing some-

    thing better. You would be

    better off contacting your cur-

    rent customers to see how

they are doing. If you have

    been performing great, it

would be a good time to ask

for a referral. And if not, it is a

    chance to fix a problem.

I work with a used car

    salesman. At networking

    events he would talk about

getting you in another car. He

    was not successful. I con-

    vinced him to mention cars

    for five seconds, then talk

    about opening his variety of

    connections and how much

    business he has brought to

others. Now at the end of

    meetings, everyone wants to

talk to him. When was the

last time you saw everyone at

    a networking meeting run to

talk to a used car salesman? If you would like more

    work successfully, and on great

    You plot the fastest route

    to your clients office

    with an on-board navi-

gation system. You use a hands-

free cell phone to leave last-

    minute instructions for your

staff on the way to the meet-

    ing. Your computer, presenta-

    tion materials and an extra

shirt are in the back seat. In

    short, your vehicle is your

    office on wheels.

    Its also a tax deduction.

    Heres what you need to

    know to reap the benefits.

    Overview: You can deduct

    auto expenses when you own

or lease a vehicle and use it for

    business. Deliveries to cus-

    tomers, traveling to business

    meetings, and trips to the

    office supply store qualify as

    business use. Commuting gen-

erally doesnt, even if you dis-

cuss work on your phone while

    stuck in traffic.

The rules: You have two alter-

    natives for calculating the

    deduction: actual costs or the

    standard mileage rate. If you

    choose standard mileage in the

first year you use a vehicle you

own for business, you can usu-

ally switch to actual costs in

    later years. Choosing standard

    mileage for a leased vehicle

locks you in to that method for

    the term of the lease.

    Whats deductible? Under the

    actual cost method, deductible

    costs include depreciation,

    maintenance, gasoline, taxes,

    insurance, parking fees, and

    interest expense.

    The standard mileage rate

for business use during 2013 is

56.5 cents per mile. In addi-

tion, you can deduct the busi-

    ness portion of parking fees,

    tolls, certain taxes and, if

    youre self-employed, interest

    on your vehicle loan.

    How to benefit: Maintain a

    log of business and personal

    mileage and keep receipts.

Having both lets you pick the

    method that generates the

    largest tax deduction.

Call us if you would like

    additional information on

    taxes and business driving.

    Some people prefer cats,

    while others loyalty lies

    with dogs. Dogs and cats

    have different personalities,

which is what draws people to

them for one reason or anoth-

    er. Though different, cats and

dogs alike need to visit the vet-

    erinarian for routine checkups.

Still, it seems dogs head to the

    vet more frequently than cats.

    Organizations like the

    American Association of

    Feline Practitioners and others

    have uncovered the disparity

in care among dogs and cats.

Cats are less likely to receive

    veterinary healthcare than

    dogs, as research shows that

    cats make up about one-quar-

ter of patients at small animal

    veterinary clinics.

    Cats have long been sec-

ond to dogs as the most popu-

lar pet. But cats may be edging

out dogs as the preferred pet,

    particularly because they seem

    to need less attention and

    maintenance. But these same

    qualities that make them

    attractive pets could be putting

their health at risk. Cats that

tend to fend for themselves act

aloof and may not give their

    owners any indication that

they are sick. As a result, pet

    owners can become compla-

    cent about cat care, simply

    because they dont spend as

much time with cats as they

    may with a dog.

    Dr. Katy Allen, a veteri-

    narian and owner of

    Canterbury Tails Veterinary

Services, has said dogs are an

    in-your-face kind of pet.

    People tend to interact more

with their dogs by taking them

    for walks and playing with

    them. So its more noticeable

    when something is not right

with a dog. Cats, however, are

    more stoic. When they dont

feel well, cats will run away

    and hide.

    Changing vaccine sched-

ules for many animals may also

affect how often cats visit the

    vet. Immunizations have

changed so that some shots can

be offered every two or three

    years instead of annually.

    Therefore, pet owners may not

see the need to visit the vet

unless the animal is due for a

shot. This can put a cat at risk

because it is usually during rou-

    tine exams when vets uncover

    something that the pet owner

may not have noticed on his or

    her own.

    The American Animal

    Hospital Association urges cat

    owners to remember that every

year that passes for a cat is

equivalent to several years for a

    person, making it imperative

    for cats to receive wellness

    examinations, including labo-

    ratory testing, once a year.

    Healthy senior cats should be

    examined once every six

    months, as illnesses and

changes in an older cats health

    can progress quickly.

    What can you

    expect at a cats

    wellness exam? A

    veterinarian will go

    over a number of

    things at an annual

    wellness visit. Here

    is a list of some

    things to expect: dis-

    cussion of the animals medical

    history, testing of the cats

    stool, examination of the cats

    nose and nasal passages for

    signs of infection, examination

of the gums, teeth and tongue,

    examination of the ears to

check for mites or any dis-

    charge, examination of the

    eyes, examination of the body

    for parasites or skin disease,

    examination to determine if

    there are any abnormal

    growths or tenderness, exami-

    nation of heart and lung

    sounds, and a collection of

    blood to test for heartworms,

    feline leukemia and feline

    immunodeficiency virus.

    If any abnormalities are

    suspected, more intensive test-

    ing may be prescribed.

    Cats are prized for their

    ability to be self-sufficient and

not need the same level of

    attention as most dogs.

    However, these traits should

    not preclude them from receiv-

    ing routine medical wellness

    exams.

    As a family caregiver,

    you may find yourself

    facing a host of new

    responsibilities, many of

    which are unfamiliar or intim-

    idating. You may be taking

care of an aging parent or a

    handicapped spouse. Or per-

haps youre caring for a child

with a physical or mental ill-

ness. At times, you may feel

    overwhelmed and alone. But

    regardless of your particular

    circumstances, youre facing a

    challenging new role. These

tips can help you get the sup-

port you need while caring for

    someone you love.

    1.Accept your feelings.

    Caregiving can trigger a host

    of difficult emotions, includ-

    ing anger, fear, resentment,

    guilt, helplessness and grief.

    Its important to acknowl-

    edge and accept what youre

    feeling, both good and bad.

    Dont beat yourself up over

    your doubts and misgivings

    these feelings simply

    mean youre human.

    2.Ask for help.

    Even if youre the primary

    family caregiver, you cant do

    everything on your own.

    Youll need help from friends,

    siblings, and other family

    members, as well as health

    professionals. If you dont get

    the support you need, youll

    quickly burn out, which will

    compromise your ability to

    provide care.

    3.Make time for yourself.

    While youre caring for your

    loved one, dont forget about

your own needs. Take time to

relax daily and learn how to

    regulate your stress when you

    start to feel overwhelmed. Its

    also important to stay social.

Make it a priority to visit reg-

    ularly with friends and fami-

    ly. Dont let yourself become

    isolated.

    4.Care for your body.

    Exercise regularly. Try to get

in at least 30 minutes of exer-

    cise three times per week,

since exercise is one of the

best ways to relieve stress and

boost your energy. It is also

imperative to go to all of

    your regular doctors check-

    ups and remember to eat

    healthy and get enough rest.

    5.Talk with others.

    Even when you understand

    why youre feeling the way

you do, it can still be upset-

ting. In order to deal with

    your feelings, its important

    to talk about them. Dont

    keep your emotions bottled

up, but find at least one per-

son you trust to confide in.

    Renovations that take

inventory of energy useand strive toward effi-

    ciency have grown increasingly

    popular over the years.

    Homeowners fed up with high

    utility bills want to conserve

costs, and there are a number of

ways to revamp a home to be

more energy efficient. The first step in a home

energy makeover is to find out

    where your home is losing

    money. Certain municipal and

    environmental agencies offer

    home assessments, during

which they will do a complete

walk-through of your home andhighlight areas that can be

    improved. Private companies

also perform energy audits on a

home. They may be able to

    point out appliances, windows

    or landscaping issues that could

    be compromising the efficiency

of a home. These people mayhave a more intimate knowl-

    edge of insulation ratings and

    window efficiency ratings than

    the average homeowner.

    In addition to having an

energy audit on your home to

save money on utility bills, a

professional audit may makeyou eligible for tax incentives

    and rebates. That can mean

    even more savings and may

    even increase the value of

    your home.

    Until a thorough energy

assessment can be made, thereare some easy and relatively

    inexpensive fixes any home-

    owner can undertake to help

    improve energy efficiency.

    Clean air filters. Trapped

dust and debris in a filter

    makes furnaces and air condi-

    tioners work harder. Once fil-

ters are free from dust, air can

    blow more smoothly through

    the system.

Plug leaks. Air leakscould be sucking energy out of

your home and money out of

    your wallet. Once you find

any leaks, you can use weath-

    er stripping and caulking to

    seal up breaches and save

    energy and money.

    Invest in insulation.

    Install high-efficiency insula-

    tion in attics and between

    walls to prevent energy loss

and keep more warm or cool

air in the home. A well-insu-

lated house requires less heat-ing and cooling to keep the

    temperature indoors stable,

    and that translates to less

    money spent on utilities.

    Swap out light bulbs.

    Switching bulbs from incan-

    descent to more efficient LED

or CFL bulbs can save money

    in the long run.

    By making a few simple

    changes, homeowner can

increase their energy savingsaround the house. Investing in

    an energy audit and makeover

    can pinpoint key areas that

    need improvement.

    Chicken is a versatile

choice when cookingfor family and friends

    or even when preparing a

meal for one or two people.

    Chicken can be cooked and

seasoned in a variety of ways,

    and one chicken entree may

    taste completely different

    from another.

    For many chicken

    lovers, no method of cooking

    chicken is more tasty than

frying. But frying isnt veryhealthy, and the desire to

    mimic the taste of fried

    chicken without actually fry-

ing it is what led chef Kevin

Gillespie to come up with the

    following recipe for Cast-

    Iron Skillet Chicken with

    Farro and Brussels Sprouts.

    Included in his cookbook,

    Fire in My Belly (Andrews

    McMeel), this recipe pro-

vides the same crispy flavor offried chicken, but it does so

    in a much healthier way.

    Cast-Iron Skillet Chick-en

    with Farro and Brussels

    Sprouts Serves 4

    1 cup, semi-pearled farro,

    preferably Anson Mills

    3 cups water

    1 pound Brussels sprouts

    (about 32 golf ball-size

    sprouts)

    2 chickens, about 4

    pounds each

    2 tablespoons grapeseed

    oil3 cloves garlic, shaved on

    a mandoline

    2 cups warm chicken stock

2 tablespoons olive oil14 cup lemon juice14 cup tahini sauce

    Salt and ground black

    pepper to taste

    1.Preheat oven to 500o F.

2.Soak the farro in the water

for 30 minutes. Drain off the

    water and rinse the grains

with cold water. Put the farro

in a 2-quart saucepan and add

    enough fresh cold water to

cover. Bring to a boil, thencut the heat down to low,

    cover, and simmer until ten-

der yet still chewy, about 20

    minutes. Drain off any excess

liquid and spread the farro on

a baking sheet to cool. You

should end up with about 2

    cups of cooked farro.

3.Meanwhile, peel off theouter green leaves of the

    Brussels sprouts until you

    have 4 cups. Reserve the

    inner heads for another use.

    4.Cut up the chickens into

    leg-thigh and breast-wing

    portions with the skin still

    attached. For each leg-thigh

    portion, bend the leg away

from the body, cut down to

the joint, then bend the joint

to break it. Cut between theball and socket, then down

    around the carcass to remove

    the entire leg-thigh portion.

    For each breast-wing portion,

cut down along one side of

    the breastbone, then run the

    knife along the contour of

the rib cage and around the

    wishbone to begin removing

    the breast from the body.

When you get to the joint

connecting the wing to thebody, grab both wing and

    breast together and cut

    through the wing joint to

    remove breast and wing in

    one piece. Score the meat

    around the next wing joint

    closest to the breast, cutting

    down to bone and scraping

with the knife so the bone isfairly clean. Bend the joint to

break it and remove the wing.

    The resulting boneless breast

    with the first wing bone

    attached and exposed is

    called an airline breast. It

    looks nicer than the boneless

breast by itself, and the wing

    bone helps keep the meat

    moist during cooking.

5.Cut off any excess flaps of

skin and pat the chicken verydry with a paper towel.

    Generously season the chick-

en on all sides with salt andpepper. Heat two large cast-

    iron skillets over medium

    heat. Add enough grapeseed

oil to coat the bottom of each

pan. Put the chicken legs in

one pan, skin side down, and

put the breasts in the other

    pan, also skin side down.

Crank the heat up to medi-

    um-high and cook until the

    skin is nicely browned, about

    4 minutes. No need to peek;

    needed. With laser-enhanced

bleaching, however, dramaticresults can be seen after the first

    treatment.

    Costs. Over-the-counter

    bleaching systems are the least

    expensive option, with costs

    ranging from $20 to about

    $150. Depending on where you

live and the extent of the pro-

    cedure, dentist-supervised

    home bleaching systems range

in cost from approximately$150 to $300 per upper or

lower set of teeth, or $300 to

$600 for the whole mouth. In-

    office bleaching procedures

range in cost from $200 to $500

per arch, or $500 to $1,000 for

    the whole mouth.

    Supervised versus unsuper-

    vised process. Dentist-super-

    vised at-home bleaching and

in-office treatments offer addi-tional benefits compared with

    over-the-counter procedures.

    First, your dentist can perform

    an oral examination and con-

    sider your complete medical

history, which can be helpful in

    determining how your teeth

    became discolored and if

    bleaching is an appropriate

    course of treatment based on

your type of stains and number, type, and location of restora-

    tions. Your dentist can then

better match the type of stain

    with the best treatment, if

    appropriate, to lighten those

    stains. With dentist-supervised

    bleaching procedures, your

dentist will likely want to see

you a couple of times to ensure

    you are following directions, to

make sure the customized trayis fitting properly, to inspect

your gums for signs of irritation,

and to generally check on how

    the teeth whitening process is

    proceeding. With over-the-

    counter bleaching products,

    you are on your own.

If you have made up your

mind to assume the risks associ-

    ated with over-the-counter,

    tray-based bleaching kits, heres

some sound advice:Try to select a kit that

    allows some customization of

    the mouthpiece. Some kits

    come with a mouthpiece that

can be molded to some degree.

    These are better than others

    that come with a standard

    stock mouthpiece.

Try to gain the opinion of

    others who may have already

tried the kit you are consider-ing.

If at any time you experi-

ence a prolonged change in the

color of your gums or an

    increased tooth sensitivity to

hot or cold foods and bever-

    ages, stop wearing the mouth-

    piece and see your dentist

    immediately.

    25/28

    Thirty years ago, people

had fewer than half oftheir teeth for their

    lifetime. But the dental pro-

    fession is experiencing the

    most incredible changes in

    history. Today, people have

more than 50 percent of their

    teeth present for their life-

time. Just as the medical pro-

    fession has extended years to

    peoples lives, the dental pro-

    fession has extended the

amount of teeth remainingduring their lives.

    Preventative dentistry,

    advances in treatments, scien-

    tific research, peoples dental

    awareness, and the desire for

a great smile are just some of

    the reasons people are sav-

ing their teeth. The deleteri-ous effects of sugar, poor

    diet, improper dental

    hygiene and irregular dental

    checkups have become com-

    mon knowledge to most

    people. Prevention such

    as flossing, dental cleanings,

    pediatric dentistry and qual-

    ity toothbrushes and pastes

    are discussed regularly in

    social situations. I have seen

and heard it as a dentist forover 33 years! As weve

    managed to preserve our

    adult teeth, weve come to

    face new challenges and

    issues. Many medical illness-

es were never heard of, or

    even treatable, years ago.

Dentistry is now facing awhole new array of special

    needs and interests.

    I will be presenting a

    seminar to address many of

    these areas, such as: (1)

    medications and their

    effects on your mouth, (2)

    new home care advances to

    reach those places we strug-

    gle with, (3) preserving

    your bite now that youve

saved your teeth, (4) vari-ous options that have

    improved some of the old

    remedies, such as loose

    dentures, dry mouth and

    bridgework, (5) the con-

    nection between medical

    illnesses and tooth decay and

gum disease, and (6) modernpreventative alternatives to

    control getting cavities and

    gum disease.

These are a few of the

    topics I will discuss on

    Wednesday, September 4 at

    Cedar Crest starting at

    10:30am. Sonicaire (Phillips/

    Discuss) will be sponsoring

the event and will hold a raf-

fle of new home hygiene prod-

ucts worth over $1,500. Thisseminar is free and open to the

    public. Please RSVP by call-

    ing 973-831-3759 or e-mail-
