Millburn Board of Education President John Westfall-Kwong,
from left, with Superintendent Christine Burton.
New Millburn Superintendent KeepsExpectations High With Eye To Improve
by Kerry Breen
Although she was named as the interim superin-
tendent on March 1, Christine Burton became theofficial superintendent of the Millburn school dis-
trict on July 1.
“It is an honor to be given this opportunity,” said
Burton, when asked how she felt about being named to the
position. “It is a fantastic district; to be given the opportu-nity to work here and be a vital part of the curriculum and
instruction, and to work with the teachers and administra-
tors, and to now lead the district – it is an honor, one I am
very excited to be given.”
Burton started her career as a middle school teacherwho primarily taught math, working in Hillsboro. She
advanced through the ranks, becoming their mathematicsspecialist; eventually she became the director of the math-
ematics department in Montgomery Township’s school
district. In 2010, she began her career in the Millburn
school district, where she was the assistant superintend-ent. In March, she was named the interim superintendent,
and on July 1 she was named the official superintendent.
She has been working in the district for six years.
Burton says she believes that, even though Millburn
places high expectations on students, and expects muchfrom them both academically and in their extra-curricu-
lars, students should be treated individually.
“One of the things I have been speaking a lot about isthe way we as a district can improve on our high levels of
rigor and expectation,” she said. “How can we go beyond
the acquisition of skills and knowledge – how can wemake our students innovative problem solvers; how can
we teach them to solve real-world problems? Through
curriculum and instructional practices, we will innovate,
and we will inspire students to innovate. We want students
to demonstrate their knowledge beyond pencil and papertests. We want to build true twenty-first century learners
who have active problem solving skills, using thingsthey’ve learned in class.”
Burton has been open with parents about her plans for
the district, and has kept them well-updated as to the
goings-on of the school, even during the summer. On the

where she posts updates that detail impor-tant information, such as projects that are
being worked on and other important
information that students and parents need
to know.
“We are always looking for ways toimprove upon what we do,” said Burton,
when asked what she would like to say to
any parents who have students in the dis-
trict. “I would like to tell them to be able to
expect the best – of myself, of the teachers,
and of the students. At the end of the day,
we are addressing the needs of the kids.We also need to remember the important
elements of meeting their needs as kids – it
is important that we have rigorous pro-
grams and high expectation, but we need
to meet their individualized needs. Wehave to remember that they are kids.”

On a list of New Jersey schools with
the best teachers in the state,
Millburn Senior High School and
Livingston Senior High School ranked first
and second, respectively. Both schools arepublic high schools, with students in grades
nine through twelve enrolled. Livingston
Senior High School has 1,809 students;
Millburn Senior High School has 1,522.
Both are ranked as ‘A+ Schools’ by
Niche.com, using a variety of categories,
such as academics, extracurriculars, teach-
ers, and food. Only 2.5 percent of the
schools on Niche.com receive A plus rat-
ings.
Out of the school in NJ, 241 schools in
the state were surveyed by Niche.com, mak-ing it all the more impressive that Livingston
and Millburn managed to score so strongly.
Livingston has a student-teacher ratio of
11:1, which allows teachers to make sure
that no students are left struggling, and
makes it easier to provide a more tailored,
individualized educational experience.
Millburn has a similar ratio of 13:1.
The teachers in the schools are also well-
received by the parents and students, accord-
ing to statistics posted on Niche.com.
Teachers at Millburn Senior High School
earned 4.2 points out of a possible five, and
teachers at Livingston Senior High School
earned an even 4.0 out of five.
“They care,” said Millburn Senior HighSchool Principal William Miron, when
asked what he thought made the teachers in
his school so acclaimed. “The students
know that they care about them, that they are
interested in both their progress and in them
as human beings – they are interested in
them academically and personally. It goes
beyond driving the kids to do well. Every
student needs people interested in helping
them get above and beyond, and that is what
our teachers can do.”
Many of the teachers in these two schoolsare very experienced, having been teaching
for at least three years. Niche.com also totals
the percentages of teachers who have been
working for only one or two years – in
Millburn Senior High School, only 9.8 per-
cent of teachers have been teaching for only
that long. In Livingston Senior High School,
16.3 percent of teachers are in their first or
second year.
“It takes more than expertise in the field
Millburn and Livingston Ranked As Having The Best Teachers In NJto make a great teacher,” said Miron. “High
school level teaching means that they need
expertise in their field, but that is a dime a
dozen. The tough part is how teachers share
and convey information, and how they get
students to learn on their own, and how theyencourage and connect with students.”
Niche.com’s rankings are unique
because much of the data and many of
the reviews come straight from the par-
ents and students, allowing a more
hands-on view of the school, rather than
just using stat isti cs and info rmat ion
found in surveys and censuses. It also
weighs a variety of different factors, with
each factor accounting for no more than
15 percent of the ranking, as to get awell-rounded view of the school. More
information about the methodology of
their rankings can be found at
https://k12niche.com/rankings/methodol-
ogy//.

Drivers who travel between the
United States and Canada or plan on
renting a car for an internationalbusiness trip or vacation should understand
that driving rules vary from country to coun-
try. One noticeable difference is the side of
the road vehicles travel on, as well as the
measurement system used for calculating
speed and distance. Although speedometerswill often feature both mph (miles per hour)
and kmh (kilometers per hour), it helps to
have a rough idea of the conversion between
the two speed measurements. Every mile perhour in speed translates to roughly 1.7 kilo-
meters per hour. Therefore, if the posted
speed limit is 55 mph in the United States,
expect to travel at 88.5 kph in Canada.
Always heed speed limit postings and regu-
larly check your vehicle’s speedometer toensure you are driving at or below the legal
limit. Traffic offenses that might be tolerated
in one country may not be tolerated across
the border, so always obey the local laws
when behind the wheel.

M
illburn High School has been ranked the thir-
teenth-best school in the country, according to
a survey done by “Newsweek.”
“We are consistently ranked high in various surveys,”said William Miron, the school principal. “Even still, it
was flattering to be ranked so high.”
“We have a great community,” he continued, when
asked about what he thought made the school so great
and worthy of such a high ranking. “By community, I
mean the town itself, the parents and students and facul-
ty. We have high expectations, and the parents have
lofty goals for their children – and the students have
lofty goals for themselves. Even while we can stress
things that aren’t academics, the students strive to do as
well as they can. They are all going to college, this com-bination just helps. When they are not working on aca-
demics, they know that their classmates are, and that
helps them stay on track. It is a nice environment for
learning; everything they do is in the hope that they are
going to do as well as they can, and they will then excel.
They are constantly doing as well as they can.”
According to “Newsweek,” Millburn boasts a gradu-
ation rate of 100 percent. Of that number, 93.5 percent
of students are deemed ‘college ready,’ and 99.5 percent
of students go on to college after graduation. According
to Miron, every student who graduated this year will be
going on to college.
Millburn High School also has an extensive
advanced placement (AP) class program, meaning thatstudents can take classes and receive college credits
after passing an exam at the end of the year. According
to Miron, there are 27 different AP classes offered at the
school; he estimates that about 80 percent of students
will take at least one AP-level course during their time
in the school. The average student AP exam score is a
4.47, according to Newsweek. The exams are ranked on
a scale of one to five, with five being the highest grade
attainable.
“It challenges our students,” said Miron. “It gives
them something to shoot for and to be proud of.”Students also regularly score well on the SATs and
ACTs, standardized tests that are very important when
college admissions roll around. The average SAT score
is 1,897, out of 2,400 possible points. The SAT tests
math, writing, and reading comprehension. The average
ACT score is 27, out of a potential score of 32. In addi-
tion to the subjects tested on the SAT, the ACT also tests
students on science.
Miron also says that Millburn places an emphasis on
electives, as so not to overwhelm students with academ-
ics. Many electives are academically inclined, such as
elective history, math or science programs, but there are
more creative outlets offered as well, such as classes
that focus on art or music.“Overall, we have a pretty wide variety of choices for
them, and we try to accommodate as much as we can,”
said Miron. “If a teacher comes up with an idea, we try
to see if there are enough students who are interested in
taking it. We do our best to challenge them while
accommodating their academic interests.”
The school enrolls students from grades 9 – 12. There
are 1,522 students in attendance.
Millburn High School was also credited as having the
best teachers in the nation by a study done at
Niche.com. More information about the Newsweek sur-vey can be found here: http://www.newsweek.com/high-
schools/americas-top-high-schools-2015.

Those interested in socializing with folks who keep thewheels of the museum turning at Edison’s 19thCentury factory complex in West Orange can attend
the Muckers’ Ball fundraiser on Sat., Oct. 3. It promises atradition of food, drink, music and dancing under the big tent
- a location where Thomas Edison and his Muckers hadsome great celebrations. For more info on the Muckers’ Ballcontact the Friends of Thomas Edison Historical ParkFoTENHP www.foedison.org; call 973-736-2916; or [email protected].
Touring the legendary work site of Thomas Edison andthe growing curiosity in Steampunk makes this NationalHistorical Park NHP in West Orange even more uniquelyremarkable today.
Steampunk is a subgenre of devotees that are fascinatedby retro science fiction, technology and artistic designs of the late 19th-century that ignited with the force of steam-
powered machinery. Steampunk channels the era's perspec-tive of those that lived during this futuristic thinkingVictorian and American Wild West age. Steampunk is aboutrevisiting its own distinct fashion, culture, architectural styleand art. It was a time of colorful futuristic storytelling fromH. G. Wells and Jules Verne. The Thomas Alva Edison fac-tory laboratories and his Victorian Glenmont estate home inWest Orange are in themselves Steampunk time capsulesmaintained by our National Park Service. It is also furtherpreserved by private funds, foundations and the Friends of TENHP that do dedicated fundraising where it is needed. They provide the additional renovations, enhancements and
special project exhibits that are not covered in the NHPbudget. The FoTENHP also promotes the era’s pastimes of gardening, fashion, advertisements and the music that wereconnected to these Edison inventions in true spirit.
Coincidentally, the Victorian age of the late 19th Century
was also the pinnacle years of Thomas Edison’s career thatmade him the world’s famous wizard of invention capable of moving ideas off from the science fiction category to theworld of tomorrow. In 1897 H.G. Wells created his sciencefiction masterpiece The War Of The Worlds. The Hearstnewspaper group commissioned a sequel to follow it.Science editor - Garrett Putnam Serviss would write the nextstory. This sequel follow up was entitled Edison’s Conquestof Mars which appeared in Feb. of 1898. Thomas Edisonbecame the heroic character of this science fiction world. The iconic persona of Edison was a name that lent thebelievability factor to a new fiction genre – the space tech-
no-thriller. Serviss’ book was the first space battle to everappear in print. The West Orange laboratory complex was built in 1887.
The facilities were well equipped with many kinds of machinery and instruments, with a factory supply of materi-als from around the world that employed dedicated and care-fully-chosen workers. Employees that worked at Edison’sfactory laboratories did not need to read a science fictionbook to believe that Thomas Edison had the imagination totake them into the future with his inventions and ideas. There was a lot of excitement working for Thomas Edisonthat attracted the best talent pool of employees not only
locally but from around the world. This pool also includedgreat performing artists for his film and music studio pro-ductions. Edison’s closest workers were his engineering anddevelopment team that he fondly called his Muckers. Therewere great employee celebrations too that went along withthe hard work that helped produce the grist for futuristic pulpfiction in its day.
See the Thomas Edison’s Steampunk Collection. Visitthe Thomas Alva Edison Museum – NPS Open Wed.through Sun., 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Admission fee is $10. Formore details, go to http://www.nps.gov/edis/.

DRIVEWAYS
New Jersey Blood Services hasplanned the following blood
drives:
Sept. 20- Seventh Day Adventist Church
in Dover, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.; FlandersUnited Presbyterian in Flanders, 9 a.m. to1:30 p.m..
Sept. 25- Madison Area YMCA,
Madison, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Sept. 28- Knights of Columbus, Netcong,
3 p.m. to 9 p.m.
New Jersey Blood Services, a divisionof New York Blood Center (NYBC) is
asking for help to maintain an adequate
supply of all blood types, but especially
O-negative – the “universal” blood which
can be transfused into anyone in an emer-gency. In addition, hundreds of addition-
al blood drives need to be scheduled to
meet projected hospital demand. Current
inventory of several blood types is run-
ning below the desired target level.
“It’s simple: hospital patient demandfor blood often outpaces our best efforts
to recruit donors and schedule blood
drives,” said NYBC Executive Director
of Donor Recruitment Andrea Cefarelli.
“There are always reasons but we have to
overcome that for the sake of hospital
patients who need us.”“This is one of the toughest times of
the year,” Cefarelli added. “We’re asking
for our dedicated supporters to roll up
their sleeves to make sure we’re able to
provide our hospital partners with what-
ever they need to take care of theirpatients.”
Blood products have a short shelf life
– from five to 42 days, so constant
replenishment is necessary. Each and
every day there are patients who dependon the transfusion of red blood cells,
platelets and plasma to stay alive. Butblood and blood products can’t be manu-
factured. They can only come from vol-
unteer blood donors who take an hour to
attend a blood drive or visit a donor cen-ter.
To donate blood or for information on
how to organize a blood drive call 1-800-
933-2566; visit: www.nybloodcenter.org.
