THE NEXT STEP TO YOUR FUTURE

We are very proud of our Sixth Form; the results in the summer of 2016 were excellent.

Over 41% of all grades were A* or A, with 88% of grades at A*- C. All students who applied to university were successful, and as well as other students going on to apprenticeships and work.

These successes are a result of the hard work and dedication of ours students, closely supported by our staff.

Our Sixth Form Block provides a perfect environment for study. Excellent teaching and support and guidance for every individual, whatever your pathway, ensures you can be the very best. We expect our Sixth Formers not just to be part of our school community, but to take the lead within it.

The next two years are about a partnership between you and the school, working together to achieve

your goals. Mr Watkins, our Head of Sixth Form, Miss Crossley, Deputy Head of Sixth Form and all our staff work closely to ensure you are given the widest range of challenges and opportunities, and to ensure you are fully involved in your own learning.

Life in our Sixth Form is about seizing opportunities, relishing challenges and developing skills. When you choose to continue your education here with us you do so in an environment which values the individual whilst encouraging teamwork and working together to achieve success. We want you to choose Trinity Sixth Form to continue your educational journey with us.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEAD STUDENTS At Trinity we pride ourselves on our excellent standards and student support. All pupils are encouraged to push their own boundaries and develop in terms of their maturity. The opportunities provided are unparalleled, with areas for silent study, dedicated sixth form mentors and even its own canteen.

We have all witnessed the growth of Trinity sixth form over the years, from just over thirty students to our thriving designated block today. Not only has this growth seen increasingly outstanding grades, but also well-roundedness on the part of students. All students attending Trinity sixth form will develop in terms of their maturity, with independent study and whole school responsibilities; nonetheless small classes and our designated tutors ensure unrivalled and tailored support throughout students’ two years here. The best example of this support is the investment in programmes such as Unifrog and support in UCAS, as well as our careers advisors to offer the best opportunities for students in the future whether that be in further education or the world of work.

The sixth form plays an integrated role within the school, meaning students

activities and facilities including sport

and performing arts; sixth-formers will be given the opportunity to take part in these activities taking on leading roles in student voice or house events.

The sixth-form block is an inspiring space to learn, with all the resources and dedicated teaching staff allowing students to expand their

horizons. This is compounded by close relations between all students through Friday challenges and external speakers, in order to provide a welcoming and productive atmosphere. Regardless of the subjects you may choose, you are certain to thrive here at our Sixth Form.

If you wish to make the most of your education then Trinity Sixth Form will give you the opportunity and facilities to match your ambition. The philosophy behind Sixth Form Studies at Trinity School is centred around students being given the best possible chance of ensuring that they will remain competitive in the ever changing world of work and university applications in a high performing environment.

At Trinity, our success is as a result of a dedicated team of Sixth Form teachers and tutors who work tirelessly to ensure that students maximise their academic and personal potential. We pride ourselves on small teaching groups so that you can get the most out of your subjects. We are able to say that all our students who applied to University were accepted onto courses last year.

However, at Trinity we not only pride ourselves on delivering academic success but we also strive to ensure that you get the best support to develop as an individual. We run a comprehensive Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) programme throughout year 12 and 13 to help give you the skills that you will need when you leave education.

An integral component of Trinity’s high performance is its strong House system. This is continued in the Sixth Form where our students are expected to act as role models to the rest of their House and the school in general. As such we are looking for people who are committed

and conscientious and not afraid to take the lead to make things happen. Don’t worry if you are not quite there yet, we will help and guide you to achieve these qualities. Trinity Sixth Formers are expected to be proactive and to be the driving forces behind the House competitions as well as being role models for our younger students.

Here at Trinity we take great pride in helping students make progress beyond their GCSE grades but we also care about getting the little things right. Your interaction with the people around you in society is what marks you out as a person and it is our goal to ensure that, regardless of academic ability, you will leave here with the skills to be a valued, caring member of your community.

So, let me welcome you to Sixth Form at Trinity. A place where you are expected to work hard but to enjoy yourself while doing it. I look forward to receiving your application and to discussing your options with you.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEAD OF SIXTH FORM

SUPPORT AND GUIDANCEAs we are one of the smaller Sixth Forms in the Newbury area the quality of support and guidance in our Sixth

Form is excellent. The Sixth Form team know each student as an individual and through a superb tutoring network can provide a tailored package of support and guidance. Tracking and

monitoring of students at both the pastoral and academic level is thorough and frequent. Our intervention programme allows the team to offer support and mentoring for students exactly when needed. In addition to providing support in house,

we work with a number of outside agencies and organisations to provide targeted help for students.

On joining the Sixth Form you are allocated a Sixth Form Tutor who is there to help you make progress and plan for your future beyond Trinity Sixth Form. Our tutor team has been chosen as they have vast experience in preparing students for higher education and giving personal support in a wide range of areas. Our PSHE and tutorial programme adds value to students’ experiences and provides excellent preparation for adult life, whether it is

knowing how to check and sign a rented housing contract or whether it is critically considering issues relating to current affairs or debating issues in a local, national and international context.

WHAT’S EXPECTED?Students are expected to be on time and attend school every day. Your tutor will be the most important person you work with on a regular basis, therefore communication between you and your parentswith your tutor is essential. Sixth Form students are expected to complete all independent study on time and in line with their Target

teacher and your tutor to get support. As a Sixth Form student you will set the highest standard for all other students to aspire to; your behaviour around the school site will be exemplary, leading by example in all areas. The dress code for Sixth Form is clear in that all students are expected to wear clothing

PARENTAL CONTACTWe encourage our students to develop their independence and ability to make their own decisions but we also recognise the crucial role parents play. Parents will receive regular reviews of their son’s or daughter’s progress through a reporting system that comments upon attainment, effort and achievement as well as Parents’ Evenings. We also welcome and encourage more regular contact from parents outside of the calendar events.

ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIESWork ExperienceWe encourage and provide opportunities for students to undertake some work experience that may or may not be relevant to their chosen

employers working with us to provide students with a real world experience that is invaluable

WHY STUDY A LEVEL ENGLISH LITERATURE? We hope students choose Literature based on a love of reading texts that have shaped literature over the years – it is something that will stay with students for all the years to come. Literature is a well-respected A level recognised for its challenge and depth by all universities. Many students go on to study English or English based subjects at university; the skills learnt in the A level Literature classroom are irrefutably important in any walk of life.

COURSE CONTENT AND ASSESSMENT DETAILS

style unit (NEA).

The AS course/Year 12 consists of preparation for 2 exam papers on ‘Literary Genres’ (worth 40% of the A level), which will be a study of the dramatic genre of ‘Tragedy’. This includes an in-depth study of Shakespeare’s Othello, and Miller’s Death of a Salesman (closed book), then a collection of Hardy’s poetry and Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby.

texts belonging to the crime writing genre. These texts will be one prose text, one collection of poetry and one modern prose text. There will be an expectation to be able to analyse an unseen passage in this exam based on students’ knowledge of the wider genre.

The third component (worth 20%) is a Non-Exam Assessment (NEA) based on literary theory, which aims to develop independence in reading and thinking – good skills in preparation for University/further study in any discipline. Here students will study a poetry and a prose text, informed by the study of the Critical Anthology and students will complete a portfolio of two essays. One of these essays can be re-creative, which will be accompanied by a commentary.

WHY STUDY A LEVEL ENGLISH LANGUAGE?The course enables students to build on the skills developed at GCSE, by engaging creatively and critically with a wide range of texts as well as introducing students to a wealth of new technical and grammatical understanding. You’ll use exciting and relevant text and data-based sources that enable you to look at how language works in the real world and its impact.

COURSE CONTENT AND ASSESSMENT DETAILS20% of the A-Level is coursework-style assessment which provides opportunities for students to pursue their own areas of interest through a language investigation and develop personal and independent learning skills. In addition, there is a piece of original writing which encourages students to develop their own sense of style and creativity. In addition, there are two separate examinations each contributing 40%

Paper 1 is based on Textual Variations and Representations and Children’s Language Development.

Section A – Textual Variations and Representations

Students are given two texts (one contemporary and one older text) linked by topic or theme. Students are then expected to answer questions requiring analysis of the texts both individually and comparatively.

Section B – Children’s Language Development

Children’s Language Development Students are expected to write a discursive essay on children’s language development, with a choice of two questions where the data provided will focus on spoken, written or multimodal language.

Paper 2 is based on Diversity of Language and Language Change as well as Language Discourses.

Section A – Diversity and Change

Diversity and Change Students are asked to write an evaluative essay on either language diversity or change.

Section B – Language Discourses

Language Discourses Students are provided with two texts that are linked by topic. Students must answer two questions – one of which requires analysis of how the texts use language to present ideas, attitudes and opinions. The other of which is a directed writing task linked to the same topic.

AS course

The AS course incorporates the majority of the topics covered at A-level, however it does not include children’s language development or Language Change. In addition, there is no coursework-like element to the course – it is 100% examination.

Sociology is an engaging and exciting subject that allows you to adopt a completely different view of the society around us. The topics studied are relatable and current as we explore social inequalities and the roles of the social institutions that we are all involved in such as the education system and the family. The skills that we learn carry across all other subjects and are not only interesting but genuinely enjoyable to learn about.

PHYSICAL EDUCATIONA LEVEL

WHERE WILL PHYSICAL EDUCATION TAKE YOU?

In choosing this course, students will develop knowledge which will equip them for undergraduate study in areas of Physiology, Bio-mechanics, Psychology and Nutrition. Physical Education can be combined with most other A Level subjects, depending upon your career aspirations. Students wishing to enter Sports Science should combine Physical Education with at least one science. Those wishing to be teachers often choose Geography or Environmental Studies. For a sporting or leisure industry career Psychology or Business Studies work well. Physical Education can be combined with almost every other subject.

WHY STUDY MEDIA?‘The Media’ interprets the world around you, for you, offering many constructions of ‘reality’. The Media studies course encourages you to analyse and challenge these accepted views through exploration of theoretical standpoints, and application in the form of practical media production.

COURSE CONTENTThe course includes detailed analysis of still and moving images to explore and develop an understanding of how Media constructs reveal deeper ideas and attitudes in contemporary societies. In order to explore a wide variety of concepts

magazines, newspapers and various forms of advertising. It is not always necessary to have studied Media Studies at GCSE but, as there is a good deal of essay writing involved, success in English or another essay based subject, such as History, would be expected. The course is assessed through two coursework assignments and two examinations, across the two years.

ASSESSMENT DETAILSThe split is 50% coursework and 50% examination. We cover four units in total – two in Year 12 and two in Year 13. In each year, one unit is practical coursework and the other is exam based, theoretical application. The examined subjects focus on ‘TV drama’ and the music industry in Year 12. In Year 13, ‘Critical Perspectives’ covers a range of contemporary issues, and there are two evaluative questions based on your personal work and development during the course. All coursework elements focus on production.

YEAR 12

with a close analysis of representation in preparation for the examination. You will cover a range of representation, from gender, to ethnicity, to disability. You will explore stereotypes and reality, supporting analysis of relevant TV Drama extracts with key Media terminology.

YEAR 13

of Media areas, in which you will have formed opinions as well as have practically considered in the coursework.

It is also an excellent complement to studies such as English/English Literature or Sociology.

DOING A LEVEL MEDIA HAS ALLOWED ME TO WORK AS PART OF A TEAM AND TO EXPLORE DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF MEDIA. I WILL NEVER LOOK AT A FILM THE SAME WAY AGAIN.

IT IS REALLY INTERESTING DISCUSSING HOW WE ALLOW THE MEDIA TO INFLUENCE OUR PERCEPTION OF REALITY.

WHERE WILL TRAVEL AND TOURISM TAKE YOU?

Since 2010 Tourism has been the fastest growing sector in the UK in employment terms. Britain is forecast to have a tourism industry worth over £257 billion by 2025. (Visit Britain)

On successful completion of a BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Travel & Tourism, students may progress into a growing employment market or continue their study in Travel & Tourism at a higher level or University.

I CHOSE TRAVEL AND TOURISM BECAUSE I WANTED TO LEARN ABOUT CULTURE AND THE TOURISM INDUSTRY. IT’S A COMPLETELY NEW SUBJECT TO ME, BUT SO FAR I’VE FOUND IT REALLY INTERESTING AND IT’S OPENED MY EYES TO HOW TOURISM WORKS WITHIN THE UK.

SOCIAL AND ENRICHMENT EVENTS

The intimate nature of Trinity’s Sixth Form gives it a unique advantage in organising student run social events. The close-knit, inclusive community of our Sixth Form gives plenty of opportunities for making friends and socialising, epitomised by the end of year celebration of our Prom.

As well as the Prom, the Sixth Form organises meals, paintballing and theatre trips – a huge advantage of Trinity is the high level of student involvement in the Sixth Form. If there’s any social event people have interest in, you can be sure someone will organise it.

In addition to these, there are academic events – regular University trips, along with numerous subject trips, such as to the Houses of Parliament and Somerset. There is also the opportunity to take part in World Challenge, the most recent being an expedition to Kenya and Tanzania.

WORLD CHALLENGE 2015

5 students from Trinity School completed a trip to Peru over the summer holidays. This involved 3 weeks of volunteer work, followed by a 5 day trek to Machu Picchu. Starting into Arequipa, the students spent a week in Colca where they helped to dig foundations for a new classroom and cultural centre. They then moved to Lake Titicaca where they learnt how to make mud bricks to help locals build toilets and the 3rd week was spent in Moray planting trees and distributing

Picchu ruins.

Students spent 18 months fundraising and preparing for the experience which was an amazing opportunity for them to both experience a completely different culture whilst helping local people.

ALTHOUGH THIS WAS AN EXTREMELY CHALLENGING EXPEDITION, IT WAS AN EXPERIENCE THAT WE WILL ALL TAKE AWAY WITH US AND CHERISH.
