What is an internship?

• A paid or unpaid job opportunity that offers you experience in your business field of interest.

• An intern is one who works in a temporary position with an emphasis on education rather than merely employment, making it similar in some respects to an apprenticeship.

1. Front pages (6-10 pages)a. Title Page- The title page indicates the subject of the project followed by

students name and register number, faculty advisor, logo of the institution as well as the date the project submitted

Summer Internship Report- Standard Structure

2. Chapter-I (2-4 pages)a. This chapter will contain introduction b. Introduction will contain relevant background, specific circumstances

surrounding the study, and the study’s scope.c. Objective of Internship- It should also list specific project objectives,

specific hypothesis, length and duration of the study, and any internship related problems. Upon reading the introduction, one should know exactly what the internship is all about, why it was done.

3. Chapter-II (10-12 pages)a. The profile of industry as a whole (if you are with Pepsi then typically

you need to present profile of soft drink industry here) b. Profile of the Product/Service that you are intoc. Organization Profile (History of the company, Vision, Mission and so

on..)

This chapter will contain domain information. For ex: if your project is based on effectiveness of performance appraisal in a concern then typically you should be discussing in detail all the concepts relating to performance appraisal. This requires you to make use of library (text book and journals).

Your internship learning in detail (your work, observation, market research if you have done etc.)

Using your supervisor

1. Use your supervisor to fullest extent that you are allowed and follow the pointers you are given by him or her

2. If your supervisor is critical of your research questions, your interview schedule, drafts of your report, try to respond positively.

3. Respond positively and be glad that you are given the opportunity to address deficiencies in your work before it is formally examined

4. Students who get stuck at the start of their report or who get behind with their work sometimes respond to the situations by avoiding their supervisors. They then get caught up in vicious circle that results in their work being neglected and perhaps rushed at the end.

Appendix- I

Executive Summary1. Typically 100-200 words in length or one paragraph

2. Needs to standalone i.e. complete in itself

3. Allows the reader to gain a very brief but complete overview of your project

4. Extremely important, often only section of the project that executives read.

5. It must convey how and why the research was undertaken

6. What the findings were

7. What the findings mean for the reader

8. What future action must be taken

9. Is the final piece you write which must contain the project objectives, a concise statement of method, a summary of the findings, and specific conclusions and recommendations.

Appendix- II

Conclusions and Recommendations• Conclusions can be considered broad generalizations that focus on answering

questions related to the internship objectives.

• They are condensed pieces of information derived from the findings that communicate the results of the study to the reader. Conclusions take the form of descriptive statements generalizing the results, not necessarily the numbers generated by any statistical analysis.

• Recommendations are generated by critical thinking. The task is one where the intern must critically evaluate each conclusion and develop specific areas of applications for strategic or tactical actions.

• Recommendations must focus on how the organization can solve the problem at hand so as to create a competitive advantage.

Appendix- III

Limitations• While all attempts are made to develop and implement a flawless study for

the organization, certain extraneous events are always present to place limitations on the report.

• Common limitations associated with internship report include sampling bias, financial limitations, time pressures, measurement error, and demand artifacts, to name a few.

• Treatment of limitations in the report normally involves a discussion of results and accuracy. For example, researchers should inform the organization about the generalization of the results beyond the sample used in the study. Weaknesses of specific scales should be addressed, along with potential sources of non-sampling error.

• Limitations rarely diminish the credibility of the report but rather serve to improve the perceptions clients may hold toward the quality of the document.

Appendix- IV

Writing Terminology• Use technical terms as defined in standard textbooks and refereed articles

• Where two or more technical terms mean the same thing, choose one term and use it consistently.

• If you use any unusual technical terms, define them precisely.

• Don’t imitate magazines and web sites!

• A report with poor grammar or spelling is likely to be dismissed as incompetent and untrustworthy

• Always check your own writing

• Your supervisor will read your draft report. But do not expect the supervisor to correct all the errors in your writing.

• Automatic grammar-checkers might also be useful. But they are not entirely reliable either.

• Minimize use of acronyms
