Bob has practiced family law and mediation for over 30 years, and has received both a Distinguished Faculty Award from the Ackerman Institute for the Family and a Cardozo Law School “Inspire!” Award for his teaching. SHARON PRESS is the Director of the Dispute Resolution Institute and Professor of Law at Mitchell Hamline School of Law (Saint Paul, Minnesota). She currently serves as Co-President of Community Mediation Minnesota, Secretary for Community Mediation and Restorative Services, is immediate past-chair of the MSBA ADR Section, and is on the Board of the Institute for the Study of Conflict Transformation. Previously, Press served as director of Florida’s state court ADR programs. Press is the recipient of numerous professional awards, including the Mary Parker Follett Award for Excellence and Innovation in Dispute Resolution and CPR’s Special Award for Distinguished Contributions to the Field and Future of Dispute Resolution. She is co-author of the textbook: Mediation Theory and Practice (3rd Edition). Press chairs ACR’s Conflict Resolution Day Committee and was ACR’s representative to the Model Standards of Conduct for Mediators (2005) drafting committee.

DAN WEITZ is the Director of the Division of Professional and Court Services for the New York State Unified Court System. Dan oversees the statewide responsibilities for a wide array of units including the Office of Alternative Dispute Resolution. Dan has over nineteen years of experience as a court administrator and twenty-seven years of experience in the field of ADR, serving as an administrator, professor, trainer and practitioner. He is an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Mediation at Cardozo School of Law, an Adjunct Professor of Clinical Law at NYU School of Law and has taught ADR and conflict resolution related courses at Vermont Law School, Mitchell Hamline School of Law, Pepperdine School of Law, John Jay College of Criminal Justice and Long Island University. Dan is an international ADR speaker having presented across the United States and beyond including Japan, China, Thailand and South Africa. He is a past Chair of the New York City Bar Association ADR Committee and past Co-Chair of the ABA Dispute Resolution Section, Court ADR Committee. Dan has served as mediator in a wide range of matters including, general civil, family, employment, human rights, community, and police conduct cases.

BASIC CIVIL MEDIATION, co-taught by Sharon Press and Dan Weitz, is a 40-hour course that explores conflict resolution, negotiation, and mediation theory through lectures, discussions, demonstrations, exercises and role-plays. The course will look at each stage of the mediation process and various attendant strategies and skills. Participants gain a deeper understanding of both conflict and the dynamics, benefits, constraints, and skills needed in third-party intervention in settling disputes.

Basic Civil Mediation will be offered at the University of Idaho College of Law in Moscow, May 14–18 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Taught by Noam Ebner, Beyond the Room is designed for those interested in exploring how conducting mediation via videoconferencing can equip them to serve their clients better or even expand their business. In it, participants will distinguish between a range of approaches to online dispute resolution currently gaining steam, and zoom in on the practice of videoconferencing-based mediation. The workshop will blend lectures with online role plays, in which participants will learn, practice (and create) best practices for online mediation.

Beyond the Room: Mediation via Videoconferencing will be will be offered at the Idaho Law and Justice Learning Center in Boise, May 14 - 15, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Noam Ebner is a professor of negotiation and conflict resolution in the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies, at Creighton University’s Graduate School. Originally from New York, Noam lived in Israel for many years, dividing his time between his home in Jerusalem, and his teaching, training and consulting activities in the U.S and through extensive travel and working online. He currently resides outside of Jacksonville, Florida.

Noam has practiced as an attorney, negotiator, and mediator at his own Jerusalem-based firm. He has trained mediators for the Israeli court system and has played key roles in several community mediation programs. He has conducted hundreds of workshops on negotiation and conflict resolution for a broad range of private sector industries, governmental agencies, NGOs, universities and non-profits around the world.

Noam has been involved in Online Dispute Resolution for over a decade, in practice, teaching and research. His work on ODR has been published in Negotiation Journal, Conflict Resolution Quarterly and the International Journal on ODR. He has also developed simulations for teaching and practicing online negotiation and mediation skills.
