Welcome back to Term 3, particularly to the new families and staff who are joining us. I hope your time at Trinity is exciting and fulfilling.

I spent some time over the break in Perth, and took the opportunity of meeting up with our new Principal Justin Beckett, his wife Zoe, and his four delightful sons, all of whom will be at Trinity. They are very excited about their big adventure, heading east in January for the start of the 2017 school year. Justin is having some leave in Term 4 this year so he’ll be visiting us, and hopefully meeting some of you then. We already have a pretty good line of communication going so he will hit the ground running! One of his passions is developing strong home/school relationships and getting parents involved in the school. If belonging to a P&F is your thing, then your time is nigh if Justin has anything to do with it!

While we have been enjoying a break with family, exciting travels and so on, parts of the world have been experiencing unspeakable horror. It is so hard to know what to do from the safety and comfort of our isolated rock so far from the troubles, but at least we should be looking at making our own community as safe and welcoming as we can. Year 8 and Year 10 Subject Information Evenings & Year 12 Trial HSC Exams

Parents of Year 10 Students I am sure that our Year 10 students are excited by the prospect of selecting subjects that capture their interests, enhance their skills and assist them to pursue a pathway beyond school. This is a reminder that the Subject Information Evening for Year 11 2017 is taking place early in Term 3 on Monday, 25 July from 7pm in the Senior School Building. Year 10 students are looking forward to putting their questions to the many teachers who will be there and have been briefed on the subjects offered and the processes involved. They have access to an online information booklet that will assist them in making this important set of decisions. The students will record their preferences via an online platform and have had the mechanics of this process outlined to them. It will be great to see as many parents as possible on the night.

Parents of Year 8 Students Year 8 students have the opportunity to have their questions about Year 9 subject choices answered at the Year 9 2017 Subject Information Evening from 7pm Tuesday 9 August in the Senior School Building. The students have enjoyed experiences across many different subjects over the last two years and this is their first opportunity to pursue their interests in the choice of elective subjects. Parents are most cordially invited to attend the evening with their son or daughter and talk to teachers who will be keen to provide information about their specialist subjects.

From the Director of Studies

Note that re-enrolment forms for 2017 will be mailed out on 29 July. Please look out for these and return to classroom or pastoral care teachers no later than 22 August 2016.

Year 12 Trial HSC Exams The focus of our Year 12 students is firmly on the Trial Examination which commences Monday 8 August and concludes Wednesday 17 August. For all students, these exams figure as significant assessment items that will assist in determining the assessment component of their final HSC mark. The students are busy honing their study schedule in order to maximise their results in this important set of exams. The Trial Examination timetable will be distributed to students early next week.

Students undertaking Visual Art, Design and Technology, Music and Drama are particularly busy as they work toward the submission of their major works and process diaries. Students should be maintaining a ready dialogue with their teachers in order to ensure that their major works are progressing steadily toward completion and that they are in compliance with all project specifications.

Year 10-12 Assessment Tasks

Students in Years 10-12 are, generally, engaging with their continued assessment program in a positive and committed fashion. The momentum created by the assessment program is powerful and it is important to maintain focus.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind students and parents that direct parental contact is required if a student is unable to submit or undertake an assessment task. The College understands that illness or misadventure can occur and we have a firm set of procedures to follow in such instances.

Certainly, in instances of assessment tasks being missed due to planned absences, students should make contact with me well before the due date so that arrangements can be made. Failure to do this can incur mark penalties. This is clearly outlined in the assessment policy documents distributed to students at the outset of the year.

If you have any queries about any of the matters outlined above, please contact Ms Kym Armstrong at the College.

Welcome back to Term 3. There never seems to be a quiet term, however, Term 3 always seems to be one of the busier terms and this is especially the case for our Year 12 students with HSC Trial Examinations and project deadlines needing to be met for a range of subjects.

I always look forward to viewing the Major Design Projects, HSC Drama Showcase, Visual Arts Body of Work and Music Concert of our HSC students. Please keep a look out this term for these events which will showcase the talents of our Year 12 students.

Carmen’s Story During the last week of Term 2, students in Year 10 listened to a presentation by John Maher who talked to the students about Carmen, his daughter, who was tragically killed in a car crash. John’s presentation was powerful and emotional. He spoke to the students about the impact Carmen’s death had on her family, friends and the wider community.

John has been nominated for Australian of the Year on a number of occasions for the road safety message he gives to students. He has been coming to Trinity to speak to Year 10 students for the last six years. The presentation was confronting for some students, but one they needed to hear.

Malcolm Thomas Head of Senior School

Over the break I was able to listen to a number of discussions about the direction of education in other countries. The debates were refreshingly similar to the current debates in Australia over local, state and federal concerns. their student loan) it was obvious that the common elements of innovation in learning based on sound research models is still the basis for improvement.

The learning spaces that we have at Trinity are being upgraded regularly and, given some sunny weather, the newest space (the Infants Centre) will become part of this process. We are looking forward to moving Kindergarten and Year 1 into their new learning spaces and also transitioning all other Year groups into their own learning pods. This will give flexibility as well as structure and allow us the opportunity to become more involved with all aspects of student improvement in learning.

We are all looking forward to a productive term as students become involved in their learning.

Creative Pursuits The extensive program continues in week 3. The students approached the activities in a positive manner. This is a large undertaking and the support of all staff and students is appreciated.

Mathematics Competition: a number of students have enrolled in this annual event on Thursday 28 July. It is a great and very creative approach to thinking in mathematics.

Parent Helpers A number of parents have asked about another information session regarding their involvement as helpers. I would like to run this as a group session but also understand the busy nature of running a family. If you would like to be part of the helper group could you please e-mail me at the College and I will endeavour to organise an appropriate time.

Assembly It is wonderful to witness the parental support for students at assembly. Due to the large number attending we have decided to sit parents in the second bay in the MPH. This should afford all parents better viewing during the assembly.

Public Speaking Finals Tyra Murray, Sam Vaccaro, Hamish Darmody, Ariel Halford and Christina Halford will represent the College at the local Final of the Lions Club Public Speaking competition on the evening of Monday 25 July. We wish them well and look forward to hearing about their experience at this level.

Co-Curricular Activities These are a wonderful opportunity for students to focus on various skills that will enhance their learning. The kitchen/garden group is one activity that will continue throughout the semester.

Welcome Back A warm welcome back. I trust all families had the opportunity to spend some quality time together over the break.

The Importance of Handwriting in School Most recently a parent asked me, “Why do you have such an emphasis on handwriting at school?”

The National Handwriting Association of the United Kingdom answers this question beautifully. The association writes:

Jotting down a shopping list, writing a birthday card, taking down a phone message, completing a form at the bank …. handwriting is part of our daily lives. It is on show to others and may be used to make judgements about us. Writing has a very long history. It began as simple pictographs drawn on a rock, which were then combined to represent

ideas and developed into more abstract symbols. Just like our writing today, early symbols were used to store information and communicate it to others. In recent years, modern technology has dramatically changed the way we communicate through writing. However, despite the increased use of computers for writing, the skill of handwriting remains important in education, employment and in everyday life. Time devoted to the teaching and learning of letter formation in the early years will pay off. Legible writing that can be produced comfortably, at speed and with little conscious effort allows a child to attend to the higher-level aspects of writing composition and content. This is important when assessments are based on written work, particularly in time-limited written examinations, which remain as a major form of assessment for many formal qualifications. Without fast and legible handwriting, students may miss out on learning opportunities and under-achieve academically. Beyond formal education, most employment situations will involve at least some handwriting and require the communication of critical information (e.g. medical notes, prescriptions). Thus, handwriting with pen and paper still has an important role from early childhood through our adult lives but, more and more, people are shifting from paper to electronic modes of communication. Interestingly though, many personal computers now have handwriting recognition capability so that handwriting as means of interacting with computers is becoming more pervasive. It seems, therefore, that even in this modern age, handwriting remains an important skill for communication. It is looking like another busy and exciting term for both the College and the Library, with a number of events and activities taking place over the next few weeks.

Book Week Book Week falls on Week 6 (22 to 26 August) this term, with the annual Book Parade and Assembly scheduled for Friday 26 August. Students in the Junior School have already started to explore the books that have been nominated as part of the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) short lists for 2016. More information regarding Book Week and the Assembly will be provided closer to the date.

Book Fair Term 3 will also see the Library hosting the second Book Fair for the year. This Book Fair has been organised through Carnival Book Fairs, which is an Australian company that offers books from a number of leading publishers. It is hoped that inviting different Book Fair organisations throughout the year will provide students and their families with a broader and more diverse range of books and other items to purchase. This Fair will also coincide with Book Week, and the Book Parade/Assembly, as another opportunity to promote and celebrate all things books and reading!

Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) Term 3 will also see the conclusion of this year’s Premier’s Reading Challenge. The end date for the Challenge is Friday 19 August, however, we encourage all students completing the challenge to have their books entered before this date. Students in K-2 classes will have their challenges completed by their classroom teacher and entered by our PRC co-ordinator, Mrs. Janelle Parker. All other students will need to ensure that they have read and entered the correct number of books on the PRC website to be eligible to receive a Premier’s Reading Challenge Certificate for this year. Any questions regarding the PRC can be emailed through to [email protected]

Book Club Scholastic Book Club will be back in Term 3 after taking a short break at the end of last term due to the Scholastic Book Fair. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody for the relative ease with which the LOOP payment and ordering system was taken up during the last Book Club.
