4th International Alzheimer’s Disease Conference
Recommendations:During the 1st Alzheimer’s Association International Conference held in Riyadh between 28 and 30 Rabi` Al-Awwal 1433 corresponding to between February 20 and 22, 2012 under the patronage of His Royal Highness, Prince Ahmed Bin Abdulaziz, Deputy Minister of the Honorary President of the Association, attended by a large number of physicians and specialists from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and abroad, the participants recommended the following:
1. Send to the office of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, and His Highness the Crown Prince, His Royal Highness Prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz,- may God have mercy on them all – a thank you letter for the support, care, and facilities bestowed upon the Saudi Alzheimer’s Association and 1st Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in Saudi Arabia
2. In view of the official statistics which have shown that the age expectancy of Saudi Arabians exceeds 75 years, a fact which has led to high incidence of Alzheimer, the conference recommended that the Ministry of Health assume within a 5-year-plan sending Saudi physicians abroad to specialize in the field of Alzheimer’s disease in order to cover local needs.
3. At the service of Alzheimer patients and caregivers, the conference requested the Ministry of Health to engage caregivers and medical staff at hospitals and health centers in training programs
4. In view of the positive impact which prevailed among the audience due to the well organized Conference, the participants recommended that Saudi Alzheimer’s Association shall organize an Alzheimer’s Association International Conference periodically, “each 2 years”.
5. They also recommended that the Association expands its scope of awareness campaigns for caregivers, in particular, through workshops for caregivers three times per year in different regions in the Kingdom.
6. Intensify press efforts in spreading awareness of Alzheimer and utilize new media platforms in this regard.

4th International Alzheimer’s Disease Conference
RecommendationThese are the main recommendations of the conference:1. Improve the availability of census data pursuant
to the elderly to help decision makers make the appropriate decisions
2. Communicate with the Ministry of Health and other parties in order to support and promote the request for providing healthcare for elderly in general and Alzheimer patients in particular.
3. And if emergence of clinical symptoms indicates that the disease is in its advanced stages, then the awareness campaign should focus on the biological changes accompanying the disease and primary and secondary prevention
4. Discuss practical methods to discover the disease before the emergence of the symptoms in order to prescribe medications that would curb the development of the disease
5. Scientific research shows that caregivers suffer from different psychological and physiological problems for many years, problems which may be identified scientifically and codified.
6. The use of evidence-based educational and psychosocial intervention programs is likely to provide tangible benefits for caregivers. Taking into account that almost all Saudi patients with Alzheimer are nursed at home, there is a large need for this kind of intervention.
7. Nursing colleges in KSA may seek to introduce new nursing courses or increase the intensity of the existent courses in addition to providing higher degrees for the same major.
8. Establishing healthcare services for the elderly will provide a direct service for them as well as
a suitable atmosphere for the training of the nurses and present a positive image of dealing with this segment.
9. Facilitate and enhance local research in order to understand risk factors related to Alzheimer among Saudi Arabia Citizens
10. Create long-term relations with international researchers as a fundamental step to guarantee the quality of local research
11. Focus on lifestyles that would help reduce having the disease
12. There is an urgent need for awareness and education on suitable designs for the patients. This shall include caregivers, interior designers, and workers in the field of healthcare.
13. New healthcare facilities that serve elderly patients with cognitive impairment might reconsider friendly-designs
14. There are numerous rumors about treatments that have not been proven effective partly because of the dissatisfaction with the current approved treatments. We shall always refer to recognized scientific evidence in this regard.
15. Enhance and facilitate the participation in international research because it would be an appropriate opportunity to reach potential future treatments
16. Establish a scientific environment on a solid ethical and scientific ground is necessary before starting any research related to stem cells due to the ethical and scientific difficulties associated with this field.
17. Nowadays, mainly King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center and King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology conduct research on stem cells in KSA.
16
TRACKS Available medical treatments for patients with
Alzheimer... Legal and social support for caregivers... Alzheimer behavioral symptoms and way of
treatment... Alzheimer environmental and genetic risk factors
and way of treatments... Ethical issues associated with the patients and

Recommendation:1. Support scientific research related to Alzheimer’s
disease in KSA and tackle the incidence of the disease and methods of diagnosis and treatment due to the scarcity of scientific research related to the disease on the local level
2. Enable the inclusion of Alzheimer patients with the beneficiaries of services for people with special needs, spread awareness of their incidence, and facilitate the mechanism of benefitting from them by patients and their caregivers.

The Conference is organized by The Saudi Alzheimer’s Disease Association, with the support of King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) and strategic partners representing the kingdom’s leading organizations...
Saudi Alzheimer’s Disease Association...Saudi Alzheimer’s Disease Association is the first of its kind that deals with patients of the disease shrouded in mystery, Alzheimer. Alzheimer was discovered in 1906 by a German scientist whose name has been associated with the disease. It is considered to be one of the most common and disquieting diseases as one ages especially in the absence of any curing drug that would eliminate it and control the process of destruction that it causes to memory. While statistics show that being affected by this disease increases each 5 years for those who are older than 65 years, the causes still haven’t been determined. In fact, half of those who reached 85 years have Alzheimer. Therefore, it has become essential to establish a charity association that aims at spreading awareness about the reality of this disease, clarifying the ambiguities, providing therapeutic and psychological support to a group of patients and their families by caregivers, and assuring the principles of volunteerism among youth and other willing and capable groups. Finally, this association plays a major role in motivating the business sector to fulfill its social responsibilities through supporting charitable activities which contributes to increasing the level of awareness among people in society on one hand, and providing financial and moral support to those in need on the other hand.
King Abdulaziz City for Science & Technology (KACST)... King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology conducts applied scientific research in order to achieve development and provide scientific advice on the national level. It plays a major role in the Vision 2030 of Saudi Arabia through National Transformation Program through setting the necessary strategies in the field of research, supporting applied scientific research programs and projects, developing the mechanisms to convert the outputs of scientific research and technical development into industrial products, and providing scientific services in information technology, scientific publishing and patent registration. King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology aims at coordinating with governmental agencies, scientific institutions, and research centers specialized in applied scientific research in the city, exchanging information and experiences, and forging partnerships through technical and scientific cooperation between Saudi Arabia and international scientific institutions.
