AMENIA FORTUIN, AREA SECURITY COMMANDER IN BELLVILLE,

AREA NORTH“I’m still excited about the promotion. The

deployment of females in protection services is always cause for great celebration as it is a male-dominated line of work. I plan to maximise my abilities in this position and provide the best service to our commuters.

I’ll be focusing my attention on crime-related issues in our area and educating our commuters

about their personal safety. We plan to introduce more safety campaigns in the area and reach out to

communities, including schools. My advice to commuters is to take heed of our safety messages and to refrain from travelling with open doors or hanging from the trains while these are in motion.”

OPERATIONS

Manual authorisations

Defi ning

manual authorisationsMetrorail has

introduced manual authorisations at Cape Town Station, in the Wynberg and

Maitland areas, and between Ysterplaat and Esplanade, Koeberg and Woltemade, and Avondale and Monte Vista stations due to theft

of cables and wires as well as vandalism of points and signals.

Thank you!

No, there’s another train on the line.

Don’t proceed until we give you the

go-ahead.

Train driver

When limited train operations are in place, trains can only operate one at a time in a section or direction. As a safety precaution, train movements are authorised manually. This means that drivers receive authorisation via radio communication from Metrorail’s train traffi c control centre.

Train drivers can proceed on a line only once they have received the go-ahead from the train control offi cer that it is safe to do so. All communication is recorded for safety purposes.

Hello! Is it safe to proceed on the line to the next

station?

ROSEBANK COMMUNITY RAILWAY CLEANUP CAMPAIGN25 February 2018The annual Rosebank Community Railway Cleanup Campaign takes place at Rosebank Station from 8am to 11am on Sunday, 25 February. The campaign, which encourages residents to take ownership of the rail reserve, aims to promote safety and strengthen relations between Metrorail and community organisations in the area.

Email Metrorail’s George Kiewiets at [email protected] for more information.

OPEN STREETS #ATOBCHALLENGE25 February 2018Metrorail has called on commuters to ditch their cars on 25 February and take the train to Cape Town Station in support of Open Streets Main Road, which will be held on Main Road between Observatory and Cape Town.

Open Streets marshals will lead commuters and their families and friends to the tourism information kiosk on the Strand Street Concourse at Cape Town Station. From there, commuters will be guided towards the ‘walking bus’, which will take them to the event.

The walking bus is a fun and interactive initiative, which enables groups of people to walk together to and from the various Open Streets locations.www.openstreets.org.za
