Happy Autumn! Mother Nature seems to be following our calendar fairly closely as temperatures have cooled and even a dusting of snow visited the Sierras this past week. As I write this I’m praying for good weather for our picnic.

MyParish App is a great resource for parishes around the country. It’s personalized by each parish that participates and is used in a variety of ways. For example, last week I asked JB Benna, Cathedral parishioner who volunteers as our app administrator, to send a reminder via the app, that Arlington Ave. would be closed due to the Heart & Stroke Walk. The app can be used to read the bulletin, get the daily Scriptures, even access links to homilies and interesting Church news around the globe as well as our Online Giving Program. You also can find out where and when are Mass times when you’re traveling. It’s a great tool to get information out quickly to parishioners about things related only to our parish. We are planning to do a parishioner app download at Masses on the weekend of October 5-6, but if you want to get a head start, here’s two easy ways: go to the App store on your cell phone and download myParish or, even simpler, just text the word “app” to 88202 and it will take you from there. As more people get registered on myParish app, the more useful this tool will be become. Check it out!

While I’m on “techy” stuff, don’t forget our parish Online Giving option, which you can access on our website. We currently have 25 people registered for this method of supporting our parish. Last month that financial support totaled over $3,000. If you need more information on how to sign up, call MaryAnn in the Parish Office. Thank you to all who are giving in this easy and consistent manner!

All registered parishioners should have received a letter from me this past week about our Catholic Services Appeal. CSA is the annual drive to raise funds for the support of the ongoing work of our dio-cese and, in turn, our parish. Over 180 of you have pledged, many have completed their pledge or are making gifts toward its completion. Your generosity has brought us very close to our goal of $98,296; we are at almost $93,000 in pledges, about $80,000 in gifts on those pledges already received. All funds received over our goal will return to the parish for our special needs. If you did not receive a letter from me and would like to participate in the support of the work of the Church, please call the Parish Office or pick up a pledge card from the table in the west vestibule. All those making pledges may place their completed pledge card and gifts in the baskets near the altar. Thank you for your continued, wonderful support!

I’ll be away on vacation during this week & next. Fr Tony Vercellone, retired priest, and Fr Conrado, chaplain at St. Mary’s Hospital, will be helping with some of the Masses. Please welcome them and thank them for their help. I’ll be getting together with a long-time friend who this year celebrates his 50th anniversary of priesthood. I’m very much looking forward to time with him and some rest and relaxation.

The Word today calls us to look at all that has been entrusted to us and discern deeply whether we are being good stewards. From our beautiful earth to our homes, families and friends to our work and the fruit of that work, we have much. We are to use it all as God would have it, in thanksgiving, for the good of others and to help bring forth the Kingdom of God. As we enter into Fall, let us set aside some time to take stock of it all and sit with the Lord.

Blessings to you all this 25th week in Ordinary Time!

END OF LIFE ISSUES PRESENTATION BY FATHER CHUCK OCTOBER 8TH, AT 6:30 PM IN RIGHINI HALL The Rites of Christian Funerals are a very important part of the life of a Catholic. The proper rites of the Church when a Catholic dies include a vigil service, the funeral Mass the next day and the final prayers at the place of burial. Cremation is permitted, but the spreading of ashes is not. We hold that since the ashes are the final remains of the person they are to be treated with the same respect as the body. A proper place of burial, such as a cemetery, is im-portant and allows family and friends to return to that blessed site should they so choose. If you have not instructed your family about the proper funeral rites of the Church, please do so and consider putting it in writing as well. Telling your loved ones that you don’t want a funeral because you think it would be easier for them actually denies them a crucial step in the pro-cess of grieving, letting go and celebrating your life. I encourage you to dialogue about this subject with your loved ones to insure your wishes are clear. The lack of knowing a loved one wishes causes the most anguish.

Bienaventurado corazón paciente, bienaventurado pues te llaman manso.

COMUNIÓN Señor, te vengo a entregar mi risa, mi llorar, mi gozo y mi dolor;
