Sincerely In Christ,
Fr. Lawrence D’Anjou
The Oakland diocese is organizing a
new pilgrimage. I had the privilege of
participating in a previous pilgrimage
to Fatima, Santiago de Compostela in
Spain, and Lourdes and Paris last
October. Another pilgrimage this
October will be going to Rome and
various holy sites in Italy. This new
pilgrimage will be in February of 2017
and the destination is the Holy Land. I
am privileged to be its spiritual guide.
We’ll be traveling with Unitours and
Belinda Lewis Held. Belinda
coordinated our previous trip to
Portugal, Spain and France and I have
to say, she was terrific. For example, a
number of us wanted to hike a bit of
the historic Camino de Santiago in
Spain, which was not on our itinerary.
Belinda went the extra mile to
arrange for this and we enjoyed a 2
mile walk along the famed ‘Way of St.
James’ the apostle.
In February of 2017 we will be
traveling to the Holy Land. There is
simply no other travel destination like
it. This is the Promised Land that God
gave to Abraham and his descendants
as a perpetual heritage. It is the cradle
of the Judeo-Christian faith. It is
where the prophets and Jesus himself
walked. It was, and still is, a place of
great intensity and spiritual fervor.
Some people are dissuaded from
making a pilgrimage to the Holy Land
because of the unrest there. There
are tensions, but the Holy Land has
perhaps the most advanced public
safety security network in the world.
And though there is no guarantee that
our travels will be without incident
(travels anywhere have some
inherent risk), the locals in the Holy
Land are quite invested in keeping the
millions of tourists to Holy Land each
year satisfied and coming back for
more.
The itinerary for this pilgrimage takes
in some of the most sought after Holy
Land destinations. After arriving we
will go directly by bus to Tiberius on
the shore of the Sea of Galilee to rest.
Our first day has us traveling to the
spectacular Mediterranean coast and
the ancient city of Caesarea Maritima.
Named after the Roman Emperor of
the time, it was built to welcome and
impress him on his visits to Palestine.
It boasts an ancient chariot racetrack
(picture Ben Hur) and an
amphitheater that still functions
today. From there we will go to Mt.
Carmel with its amazing view and its
history of the ‘showdown’ between
the prophet Elijah and the prophets of
the pagan god. From there we will
visit Nazareth and the site of the
Annunciation of the Angel Gabriel to
the Blessed Virgin Mary and later visit
the location of Jesus’ first miracle at
Cana in Galilee.
I will never forget waking up to see
the sun rising over the Sea of Galilee
on my first trip to the Holy Land. It
was one of the most thrilling
moments of my life. In Galilee the
next day we will take a morning boat
ride across the sea to Capernaum.
This is where Jesus made his home
after being rejected by his home town
of Nazareth. In Capernaum we will
visit the synagogue where Jesus
quoted the Isaiah’s prophecy about a
year of favor and famously declared,
“Today this Scripture has been
fulfilled in your hearing” (Lk 4:21). We
will visit the memorable spot where
Jesus preached the Beatitudes and
visit the town of Tabgha where Jesus
multiplied loaves and fishes to feed
the 5000. That busy day will be
completed by a visit to the site of
Jesus’ Transfiguration and the
celebration of Holy Mass in Magdala.
Maybe now you can see that this
pilgrimage will be an extraordinary
one. There is much more for us to
experience, but not enough space
here to do share it. Next time we’ll
hear about the many other fascinating
destinations planned for this very
special pilgrimage. Perhaps you can
join us!
The Holy Land. Unlike any Other Travel Experience!

Youth Ministry
On July 28, 35 teens and adults from St. Raymond headed to the University of San Diego for the Steuben-ville Youth Conference. St. Michael's teens and adults joined us for this adven-ture! While in San Diego, we got to spend some time to-
gether at Mission Bay and the Boardwalk before the confer-ence began on Friday afternoon. Once the conference began, the teens heard national speakers share about God's Thirst for them. Teens encountered Christ through the sacrament of Reconciliation, Eucharistic Adoration and the mass. It was an amazing weekend to grow together in prayer, community and in our own personal relationship with Christ. Please pray for our teens to keep the fire from the weekend.

Scripture Reflections
First Reading Isaiah 66:18-21 Responsorial Psalm Psalm 117:1-2 Second Reading Hebrews 12:5-7,11-13 Gospel Reading Luke 13:22-30 Background on the Gospel Reading Today's Gospel reading is the third of three parables in chapter 13 that deal with the theme of the unexpected reversals brought by the Kingdom of God. The other two parables are about the tiny mustard seed that grows into a large tree and the small amount of yeast that makes a large batch of dough rise. All three are about the few and the many and the Kingdom of God.
As this parable opens, Luke reminds us that Jesus is making his way to Jerusalem. This journey, this exodus as Luke refers to it, makes up the entire middle of the Gospel. He is teaching as he goes. A question from
the crowd gives Jesus the chance to make a prophetic statement. Luke uses this question device a number of times in his Gospel. A few weeks ago, the question “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” led to the parable of the Good Samaritan. The question about will only a few be saved uses typical Christian language about salvation but also expresses the Jewish concern about whether everyone who calls himself a Jew is actually faithful to the covenant. This was a concern of the Pharisees.
Jesus answers that they must strive in the time remaining to enter through the narrow door because many will be trying to get in but won't be strong enough. He then moves to a parable about another door. (The translation says “gate” then “door,” but the same Greek word is used.) Once all those entering the master's house are in and he locks the door, there will be no way for others to get in. Those left outside may knock, but the master will say he doesn't know them. Unlike the Gospel reading from a few weeks ago where Jesus was teaching about prayer, and we were told to knock and the door would be opened, in this parable, the master will not open and say he does not know us. People from the north, south, east, and west will take our place inside. Abraham, Isaac,
Jacob, and all the prophets will take our place in the Kingdom of God. Those who do not make it through the narrow door will be cast out to where there is wailing and grinding of teeth.
The image of the door is replaced in the final verses of the parable with the image of the heavenly banquet. Two passages from the Book of Isaiah influence the conclusion. Isaiah 43:5-6 speaks of God bringing Israel's descendants back from the east and from the west, the north and the south. And Isaiah 25:6 speaks of the Lord providing a feast of rich foods and choice wines for all peoples on his holy mountain. The answer to the question if only a few will be saved is no. In the end, many will be saved, but many who thought they would be saved will not be saved. The parable is a prophetic warning to repentance in order to enter the kingdom.
Readings of the Week
Questions of the Week
Adults: Whom do you think Christians
sometimes exclude from the Kingdom
of God?
Children: Do you treat others
differently because you think they are
“not cool”? How does shunning and
ignoring others take us away from God’s
mercy?

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The Medical Missionaries of Mary are an international missionary congregation of women religious. We strive to look and live beyond the barriers of culture, religion, and language to help the poor, the oppressed and the marginalized. Through our lives of service, we use our presence and activities in promoting health and wholeness: justice, peace and human dignity, reflecting God’s healing love to all.
A young, Irish woman, Marie Martin, went out to work in Nigeria, West Africa as a lay volunteer nurse in 1921. She saw the extent of people's suffering from ill-health and had special concern for mothers and their
young infants. She felt that alone she could do little, but if she could establish a group of women who would commit themselves to this work, the situation could be changed. She established the Congregation in 1937. We now number about 350 sisters working in nine African countries as well as Brazil, Honduras, Europe, and the USA.
Our sisters are engaged in numerous fields of health care: curative medicine, surgery, obstetrics in hospitals, clinics, dispensaries, and community-based healthcare. Many
diseases can be prevented if the causes are addressed. The sisters do this by health education on the importance of maintaining a healthy environment. They help to provide clean water, improved sanitation, and housing. Our sisters are also engaged in ministry to persons living with HIV/Aids, which is an urgent need. Still others are in various branches of social work and community development. Some work in direct evangelization doing pastoral care in parishes.
Our efforts are in some of the poorest and most remote areas of the world, responding to crisis in war-torn countries and helping to alleviate some of the suffering of the people in refugee and famine relief camps. We are also involved with empowering women through income generating
projects, thus enabling them to become financially self-sufficient.
As many of those we serve are unable to pay for medical services, we depend greatly on the support we receive through the Mission Office of various dioceses as well as donor agencies and individuals. We offer people the opportunity of participating in our missionary activities through their prayers and financial support. And should they desire to become more actively involved in our healing ministry, we invite them to become a vowed member or an associate of the Medical Missionaries of Mary.
Our benefactors have a very special place in our daily prayers, and we
