RYE FOOTBALL
NETBALL CLUB
PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2018
2018 was another year closer to a sustainable future for the Club with the
focus on building a senior team with yet another twelve U/19’s players making
their senior debuts. My thanks to retiring senior coach Josh Moore for his
unwavering faith in our junior development policy, that saw him provide senior
games to local kids that will be the backbone of the side for years to come. Josh has
ambitious plans to further his coaching career and has taken up a role with the
Stingray’s organization. We wish him every success and assure him he will always
have a home at the Rye FNC. Thanks to Marcus Gordon, whose first year in
charge of the reserves, was unlucky to narrowly miss a finals berth but put a firm
stamp on his expectations for the boys next year.
Our retiring U19’s coach, Leigh Morse, can take great satisfaction in
guiding our young side to third spot and at the same time providing our senior side
with disciplined, determined kids. Thanks Leigh - a job well done. My thanks go
to all the netball administrators, head coach, Lauren Hearn, C & D grade coaches,
Lucy and Barb, all the helpers and players. I thank Jodie for her enormous effort as
netball coordinator together with Kim and Rachel. Thanks to the girls on running
successful functions once again. Your input to the Club is fantastic. Russell Atkins,
in his fourth year, has once again been outstanding as our treasurer. It is a huge task
these days to administer the Club’s finances, effectively collating the many revenue
and expenditure streams. Russ again coordinated and recorded the ticket sales in our
major raffle. Well done Russ. Thanks to Doggsy for his assistance.
It was a difficult year financially with the absence of local Clubs Sorrento
and Rosebud - our gates, bar and canteen were 30% down on takings. With
Dromana being promoted for the 2019 season, it will be a huge challenge for us to
balance the books for 2019. I also thank Shane McMahon for his excellent
contribution to the Club as secretary. Unfortunately Shane will step down after three
years in the role and I can’t thank you enough for the standards you have set, the
enormous work you have done in formulating the template for future secretaries. I
live in hope that Shane will not be lost to the Club completely. I thank my vice
presidents, Scotty Beel, Reg Chadwick, Mark Egan and Neil Marwick for all your
support, confidence and friendship. Scott’s commitment to the Club over 34 years
has not diminished and has again been my source of guidance and inspiration. The
strength of the Club is, and always will be, the dedicated committee. I thank you
all for performing your many and varied duties with enthusiasm and commitment.
The football scene is ever evolving and to stay competitive the committee
must source more income and find ways to involve the community and supporters
to do this. Other people around the Club I would like to thank are Debbie Wilson
and her helpers in the canteen, particularly Shirley, Jenny, Wendy , Karen W.
Karen Mc, Lynne, Sam, Kerrie, Andrea, Sue , Kerrie and Nicky. Thanks To Jenny
Broadhurst for taking charge of designer coffee. My thanks to Trent and Hayden for
helping Debbie run the bar with Hayden and Alex on Thursday nights. 2

SECRETARY'S REPORT 2018
The past year has been the first in the new AFL South East League structure. I am sure others will also mention that the loss of our two key neighbouring clubs to the Peninsula League, introduced unintended financial consequences for Rye. The Club's income for the season was down 30% on the 2017 year. Our work to introduce appropriate governance and administrative processes essential for the effective management of a diverse sporting club and remains an ongoing project.
Our Club's role in the community is outlined in the statement below : THE RYE FOOTBALL / NETBALL CLUB is not for profit, voluntarily administered community based sporting Club. In addition to its representative role within the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football Netball League, the Club is committed to the wellbeing of the local community and through its sporting and associated networks to assist our players and supporters with opportunities for employment and to develop and enhance sporting and life skills in a healthy and friendly environment. To make this happen effectively, we need to ensure that we work closely with our 'colleagues in community', the Mornington Peninsula Shire. During 2017 we commenced working with the Shire on two major projects, the upgrade of ground lighting and renewal of the Netball courts. We are pleased to report that both have been achieved with work having commenced on the Netball court upgrade. It is important we acknowledge the ongoing support of our Nepean Ward Councillors, 2018 Lord Mayor, Bryan Payne and Councillor Hugh Fraser. Both have provided strong support, which has assisted us in having these projects come to fruition. The Club's committee, members, sponsors, volunteers and supporters also play a significant role in maintaining the entity that is the Rye Football Netball Club. Without their generous financial support and of course, their valuable time, our Club could not exist. So, thank you very much to all of you. For the 2018 season we launched a Volunteer program titled 'Share the Load' project. We are planning to reintroduce the program for the 2019 year. As mentioned in my report for 2017, the program sets out to reduce workloads on 'the few' and expand our volunteer pool to have them assist with small responsibilities/tasks that will directly benefit the day to day running of the Club. Finally, it would be remiss of me not to acknowledge the magnificent contribution our President, Mick O'Rourke, makes to the Rye Football Netball Club. His continuous work for the Club and involvement in every possible function and activity that will support the Club, has to be seen to be believed and by the way, if we are mentioning contributions to the Club, Scott Beel and Jodie Stephens in their respective Football and Netball Operations roles are also outstanding contributors and without them, the Club would not function. Finally, we look forward with great optimism to 2019, a year of significant change, in the hope that tour combined efforts will make the Rye Football / Netball Club even greater! Shane McMahon, Secretary

M.P.N.F.L. ‘Team of the Year Award’ Congratulations to : Adam Kirkwood. Div.2 - Senior Best & Fairest.
Adam Kirkwood Div.2. Senior MVP, Adam Kirkwood Div.2. Team of the Year. Tyrren Head Div.2. Team of the Year. Scott Sterling Div.2. Reserves Leading
goal kicker (51 goals). Jackson Allen Div.2. U/19 Best & Fairest
The senior football team continued to build on the efforts that were started in 2017. We went into the season with a bunch of young men that had tasted senior football, and we wanted to once again give another bunch of young men a taste for it in 2018.
We went into the season confident we could improve as a senior team, we also wanted to make sure our reserve and under 19 team had every opportunity to taste success as well.
The season started off well. We were 4 wins and 2 losses after 6 matches going into the bye. A position we were satisfied with. Unfortunately after the first bye injuries started to take its toll on our young side. These injuries unfortunately came to our big bodied players that we couldn’t afford to lose. The biggest of them all went to big Tom Baker who had really started to make an impact, but a season ending knee injury to him would prove difficult to replace. Our young list battled manfully right until the end of the season, but we tired as the season went on and with our under 19 team set to make a finals appearance, many of our under 19 players (12 of which made their senior debut throughout the season) went back to play under 19s and strengthen their hold on a top 3 position.
It was a disappointing way for the senior team to end, but the club should be proud of the position the playing list is in. 23 players under the age of 19 made their debut in the previous 3 seasons, which really does set a foundation for the future. The 2018 season from an individual perspective was dominated by our captain Adam Kirkwood. Kirkas who has now taken over from myself as senior coach had an outstanding year. Playing predominately as our centre man, Adam won our club B&F as well as the league, and the league MVP. I wish Adam all the best in his new role, one I believe he is ready for after being my assistant coach for the previous 4 seasons.
Thank you to my other assistants for the year, Reg Chadwick, Peter Grant, Neil Marwick and Mick Broadhurst (runner) and Darren Gourlay (Team Manager) you guys did a mountain of work and I enjoyed working with you.
Personally, my time at Rye is up. I have been honoured and privileged to be the senior coach of this great club, and I will never forget the opportunity it has given me. I have met and worked with so many great people here, people I now call friends. I will now follow the club with great interest in the future.
I can’t finish without mentioning two great men. Mick O’Rourke and Scott Beel are the fabric of the Rye Football Club. They have been so supportive to me and my family during my time as coach and my experience wouldn’t have been the same if it wasn’t for these two. Thank you for your support, the opportunity and the great times we shared.
Josh Moore, Senior Coach

Debbie has been at the Club since
her son, Grant, first played in 1996
and has been on the committee for
the last nine years.
Deb took over running the canteen
from Ron and Shirley Pentland in
2008 and has done an
extraordinary job of organizing her
terrific, hard working group of
helpers each home game.
Deb does all the ordering of the
canteen stock and is there to meet
the delivery and set up on Friday
afternoons ready for Saturday home games. Deb is first to arrive on
Saturday mornings and usually last to leave Saturday nights having
worked all day.
Deb took over running the bar in 2011. Once again she orders all the
stock, meets the delivery and sets up the bar for use Thursday and
Saturdays. She organizes the staff and liaises with Russell, all the
incomes and expenditures of the canteen and bar. A huge job.
Debbie is at the rooms every Sunday after a home game or function
to help clean up the mess.
Over many years, Debbie has organized heaps of mid season balls
and set up for numerous luncheons and functions very efficiently.
This year she has again taken over kitchen Thursday nights for meals
and like everything Debbie does, it has been a huge success.
I would personally like to thank you Debbie for all the help you have
given me over the years. Nothing is ever too much trouble for you and
it gives me the greatest pleasure to award you, on behalf of the club,
a well deserved life membership of the Rye Football / Netball Club.

Russell has been a magnificent contributor this year as the Club’s treasurer. Russ took on the role four years ago and has built on the knowledge he has gained over those years to streamline the Club’s incomes and expenditures. The many and varied accounts that have to be collated and paid by Russ include: Sponsorships, League fees, football equipment, apparel, medical bills, Shire fees, power and gas. Gate keeping, canteen, bar and raffle floats and incomes. He liaises with Scotty, the players, trainers and coaching payments. He manages the five separate accounts the Club has with great efficiency. Russ also has taken upon himself to be
project manager for some future Club extensions and alterations. This year he has co-ordinated the gate keepers on a rotation basis and has again helped to record the ticket sales in the major raffle.
Well done Russell. A very worthy winner of this year’s

RYE FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB REPORT 2018 - AGM
The netballers have had a very challenging season this year, with only three teams being entered. Lauren Hearn who is local girl, who has moved back to the area after living and playing in Yea, was appointed as coach of our B Grade side. Lucy Millar coached C Grade and Rachel Jankovic coached D grade. Our coaches worked together to develop our players, which resulted in many of our girls playing in higher grades and making great strides in their game play and fitness. They should all be commended and congratulated on their hard work and effort. In 2018 there was a strong focus on developing our younger players. As our numbers were down, we focused on team work, development and fun. The teams improved each week and showed their tenacity and resilience as they came up against some very tough opposition. It has been a hard year, but It was outstanding to see everyone supporting each other and always remaining positive, playing and supporting with good sportsmanship and resilience. The families and partners of our players have once again provided amazing support and encouragement. We appreciate everyone who helps out with scoring, court set up, timekeeping, pack up, rubbish pick up, tent set up/pack up, driving the players to and from training/games, selling raffle tickets, donating prizes or setting up functions. This was a difficult year in terms of on court success, but the support we received was fantastic. It always lifts the players when they have a cheer squad. Thank you to our umpires; Lauren and Tori who were always committed. Umpiring is sometimes not the most rewarding role but we are thankful for your professionalism and fairness. Every time our players step out onto the court they represent Rye with pride and fair play. We will continue to build and improve both on and off the court in 2019. We are so proud of all our players and we congratulate all the people who have made this season possible. Special mention to Rachel Jankovic, Kim Harris and Lauren Hearn for organising all the day to day netball operations. Our preseason has commenced and we are excited about the year ahead. We have appointed Nicki Arnold as our head coach and are looking at entering 5 teams in the competition. Presentation Night was great success. We all enjoyed the opportunity to celebrate our season together. The B Grade Best & Fairest was won by Lauren Hearn, Runners up Best & Fairest was Sam Harris and Coaches Award Olivia Stephens. C Grade Best & Fairest was won by Emily Harris, Runners up Best & Fairest was Kristy McGrath and Coaches Award was Shannon Christodoulou. D Grade Best & Fairest was won by Bianca Thompson, Runners Up was Bec Broomfield and Coaches award was Kianna Wickham. We also congratulate Emily Harris the winner of the Rye FNC Netball Rising Star award.

THE RESURGENCE TOUR 19 Trippers boarded the bus to Echuca for a four day trip away. We were well looked after with accommodation at the Caledonian Hotel. 12 new trippers (Barnsy, Dicko, Blood, Baby Cam, Finlay, Harry, Stricko, Meow, Glover, Richo, Lynchy and The Prince) all took the traditional gut wrenching initiation with a couple of new twists from Doogie. We gathered at the American to watch the Magpies go agonizingly close to winning but just fell short to the high flying Eagles. The Shamrock, Star Bar and the OPT Bar were a number of watering holes that got a look in. The seasoned trippers, Kicka, Balls, Doogie, Sterlo, Hillyeah, Gana and Roady all vowed to make next year bigger and longer. Did we get into trouble? Did everyone make it home? Was love in the air? Who went home to get changed and disappeared? Did Dromana get kicked out on the street? Did everyone have a great time? Who had a few bets? Were Stan and Goldy there? Did anyone have a drink on the way up? Who was BOT?

RSSC NOMINATION
SENIOR 2018 - ADAM KIRKWOOD
The Rye Football / Netball Club has great pleasure in nominating ADAM KIRKWOOD as the 'Senior Sportsperson of the Year.' Adam is a local Rye footballer who has had an outstanding year in 2018. He was such a dominant player in the competition that he won the Nepean League Best and Fairest as voted by the umpires and has had such a remarkable year that he was also judged the Most Valuable Player of the Nepean League competition. This award is selected by the opposing club coaches, and of all the 264 players that play in the senior competition each week, Adam was deemed to be the best and most valuable.
Adam was also selected in the Nepean League Team of the Year. Adam was the runner way winner of the Jennings medal, the Club’s Senior Best and Fairest award. It is the fourth time he has won the Club’s highest award as well as being runner up four times. His prolific ball winning ability and accurate penetrating, kicking and handballing to break the packs, together with his courage and determination, is an inspiration to all his team mates. Adam has been appointed senior coach of the Club for 2019, such is his leadership qualities, football knowledge and mentoring skills. Adam has set the standard of excellence at the Club that has earned him the respect and admiration of all who know him. RSSC NOMINATION
JUNIOR 2018 - JACKSON ALLEN
The Rye Football / Netball Club has great pleasure in
nominating JACKSON ALLEN as the 'Junior Sportsperson of the Year.' Jackson is a local Rye under 19 footballer who has come up through the Rye junior club to excel in the competition this year. Despite missing several games by playing in the seniors, Jackson’s outstanding ability to read the play, gather, dazzle opponents and deliver the ball to his teammates advantage caught the eye of the umpires to vote him the most outstanding player in the under 19’s and win the 2018 Nepean League Best and Fairest. Jackson was also selected in the AFL South East under
19’s team that played the Northern League at Preston City Oval. Jackson was amongst the best players in a thrilling one goal win.
To cap off a fantastic season Jackson was also voted winner of the Rye Under 19’s Best and Fairest. His outstanding marking and kicking ability together with his penetrating runs to set up play made Jackson a favorite for this award despite having to contend with an opposition tagger each week.
Jackson also represented Rye in the winning RSSC footballers relay held annually at the Rye Gift. Jackson is always willing to mentor the younger players at both the senior and junior clubs and pass on his gifted skill sets. Jackson has had an amazing year and would be a very worthy winner of this award.

SENIORS BEST & FAIREST
“ CLARRIE JENNINGS TROPHY”
Winner of the JENNINGS MEDAL
Adam’s magnificent season
has culminated in him
winning his fourth Rye
Senior Best & Fairest.
Surpassing Club greats, Bill
Moody, Nick Appleford,
Mick Cain, Alec Sansom
and Peter Trevorrow all
with three, only champion
ruckman Greg Doyle has
more with five. As captain,
Adam leads by example
both on and off the field.
His versatility saw him
dominate in several
positions this year.
On ball he is inside power
house, who is unstoppable with dashing drives through the
middle, to put the ball to advantage. Whether brushing opponents
aside or breaking tackles, his strength and determination is
amazing. Always reliable when required in defence, his strong
marks and timely spoils are a feature of his game. His fifteen
goals this year, when in attack, underlines what a great team asset
he is. Adam rounded off a fantastic season by being recognized
by the umpires for his outstanding fair play by winning the
League Best and Fairest, the League MVP and selection in the
2018 team of the year.
CONGRATULATIONS ADAM - A WONDERFUL SEASON.
