BASKETBALL

Middle B BasketbalCBC 65 defeated Marryatville High 19

On Saturday, the Middle Bs played at CBC, our home ground. The boys faced off against Marryatville for the second time this season with a comprehensive win as a result. Our team worked exceptionally well together getting many easy scores from some very skilled passing. Two boys from the C team helped fill in due to absences from the Bs.

Written by Harrison Chillingworth.

Thank you to all parents who support the boys by getting them to the matches and cheering them on. Also a big thank you to Mrs Chillingworth for scoring during the game.

FOOTBALL

Year 3 Div 2 FootballCBC 7.5 (47) defeated Rose Park 5.5 (35)

What a fabulous way to finish this term! The boys were spectacular in their display of skills and teamwork. It was lovely to hear the enthusiasm from the spectators who were kept on the edge of their seats until the final siren, when the final two goals, scored by Oliver Dichiera, secured the win.

It was a great effort by all, especially those boys who played for the opposition in order to even the numbers for the game. Their display of sportsmanship is outstanding and the positive manner in which they go after the ball and extend themselves in the skills of the game is great to watch.

Congratulations to the boys who influenced the score line. Jordan with a goal and Lachlan Pusey with a point, securing the opening numbers in the first quarter. Austin Wilks scored a goal in the second quarter. The third quarter saw Oliver Ryan excel in his control of the ball with three goals and five points in total. The final quarter saw Oliver Dodd add another goal, however, the final two goals of Oliver Dichiera secured our win.

The boys played really well, however, the best players for this game, as decided by spectator parents, were Austin Wilks, Henry Tran, Oliver Dichiera, Mitchell von Minden and Sebastian Chen who showed ‘excellent determination and won many of the contested possessions in the mid field. Very notable mentions also to Oliver Ryan and Oliver Dodd who both played a fantastic game’. Well done!

Thanks to all who were present on Saturday to support the boys in their game. A special mention to both Aaron Medson, our coach, and to Shane Tongerie who consistently show their support in leading the boys well, both on and off the field.

Year 2 FootballCBC defeated Linden Park

What a way to end the Term! Another wonderful team effort this game, boys.

CBC were strong all game keeping a steady lead. The boys displayed an unstoppable performance. All players are improving, not only in their skills, but their determination and sportsmanship also.

A special mention to the goal kickers this week; Francesco, Angas and Lucas, Dante and Samuel.

Once again, thank you to parents and caregivers, who each week help out and support the team.

I wish the boys all the best next Term with their Footy. Keep up the good work and you’ll be a hard team to beat!

SOCCER

Open A SoccerCBC 3 defeated Gleeson College 2

Goal Scorer: Cooper O’Donnell

Best Players: Cooper O’Donnell, Pat Alvaro, Martin Duku

This was the win that we so badly deserved. CBC dominated play from whistle to whistle. Gleeson were a strong opponent, but CBC managed to find cracks in their defence and exploit them. Cooper was outstanding in attack as was Pat in defence. The entire squad should take credit for this win, as it really was a great team effort. This is quite a turnaround as last time we met Gleeson the result was a 5 – 0 defeat. Every player out on the pitch gave their all and never stopped pushing. A special mention to Cooper O’Donnell scoring a hat trick, no easy feat, especially against an opponent of the calibre of Gleeson. Every game from now on is a must win if we are to make it to the finals; a big task but with commitment from every player, we can do it. With six rounds left it will be tight, but anything is possible if you have the ability (which we have) the determination (which we have) and the self-belief (which we have).

Mr Chris DolanTeam Manager

Year 10B SoccerMarryatville High 4 defeated CBC 2

Goal Scorers: Gabriel Lewis, Oliver Hoptroff

Best Players: Jordan Ciccozzi, Gabriel Lewis

CBC started the match on the front foot, gaining possession and going on the offensive with a run led by Oliver Hoptroff up front.

The tide quickly turned though, with Marryatville getting two goals past our defence in quick succession.

The boys didn’t lose heart though, making some rearrangements on field which had a near immediate effect. Harrison Clemente gained possession in the mid field and passed up to Joseph Tascione. Joseph then had a run up forward, getting the ball to Gabriel Lewis who then found the back of the net with a great shot across the keeper.

At this point a huge mention goes to Jordan Ciccozzi, who was willing to step in as a part time keeper for the team. Not only did he do a great job and had a very strong kick out of goal (thank you to his previous football training!) but it was this that allowed our usual keeper Gabriel, and also Joseph (our keeper in the first half) out of goals to produce the results they did for the team.

CBC had gained momentum at this point, which showed in their spirit, enthusiasm, and the way they attacked the ball. This resulted in Oliver Hoptroff scoring CBC’s second goal to level the score line at 2-2.

The boys continued to play a quality game, but despite their efforts, an excellent corner shot by Marryatville found its way past our keeper to put them back in the lead.

CBC pushed hard to try and level the score, to the point of moving almost everyone up the field for an all or nothing attempt at a last goal. While the energy was high and there were a couple of good attempts, we weren’t able to even the score line, and the opposition made use of the arrangement to add another goal to their tally in the final minutes.

While we didn’t get the victory, the boys were more than competitive on the field, and the match on another day could have easily finished with a win. Time to enjoy the break and we will try again next term!

TABLE TENNIS

Open Table TennisSt Michael’s College defeated CBC A2

Well, it had to happen, the best made plans etcetera. But to lose by forfeit needs a little discernment. Not making the numbers to fill a team in the last days of June half way through a season is simply embarrassing. Was it a comment on the financial year’s wellbeing and our back pockets? Was it a simple loss of heart or a comment on too much happening in the lives of young men as Term 2 limped towards the finishing line?

Thursday was Year 11 Retreat. Yes, reader it had been in the calendar for six months, but the contemporary ‘save the date’ mentality somehow couldn’t firm it up. Simply look at the stats on the return of consent forms. But attend they did and in grand numbers, some even against the very protocols put in place to meet duty of care. We stood on the beach at Semaphore and faced our own personal horizons. Thursday morning at 7.30 was also table tennis training in the gym and given the clash and the patient coach one would have thought to cancel it. We didn’t and got what we deserved. Friday evening was the Senior School Formal. And there reader lies the rub.

We are creating a generation of goal setters; order the suit, buy shoes, hire the limo, book the barber, consider a shave, invite a partner, search for the after party and find out the colour of the fabric to contrast with the colour of the corsage or if conservative, to match it. These were the uppermost questions on a young man’s mind for the past six months. Enough said.

Instead of driving a bus to St Michael’s I took a tram to the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, ignored the welcome neon of The Lady Daly and stood in line while security checked my bag. In my school clothes, neat enough but not dazzling like the young men and women who stopped to say, hello, I bit my tongue about late assignments, poor use of tense, run on sentences and a grammar of disbelief. After all, it was their night and whether the assignment deserved an A or a B or a C was not on anyone’s mind. As the last couple shimmered into the dining room, I bowed to the Lady Daly, crossed with the lights and disappeared into Bowden Railway Station. The light had faded hours ago, and the bicycle? Well the hipsters of Bowden/Brompton had theirs secured in the hallways of their row cottages or bolted in their custom made sheds below their apartments as I waited for the 7.14 to Largs.

Mr Rory HarrisTeam Manager

Open B Table TennisCBC vs Blackfriars Priory

In their final match for the term, the Open B crew came up against their toughest opponent yet in the Blackfriars A squad. It was the first away game for the season and also unfortunately the first loss for the Open Bs.

The Bs went down 6 to 14 but the scoreboard doesn’t do the boys justice as many of the losses were close and nearly all games went to three sets. In another first, there was not a single player to not drop a game or a set this week, showing the boys that they will need to get some hard practice in before versing Blackfriars at the end of the season in Intercol.

Standouts for the match were Joseph Tripodi and Dominic Zamponga who had more wins than losses, along with Cameron Rowland, the only player to play a 3 set game and win (which he did twice). Overall, it was a match with few highlights, but the team can take solace in the fact that they played well, but just came up short in some crucial areas. The boys have some time to regroup now with the next game occurring on the 28th of July at home against PAC.
