MTECH Mission Statement

To enhance the employability of individuals through market-driven career and technical education.

Institutional Accreditation Mountainland Technical College is accredited by the Council of Occupational Education (COE), headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. MTECH’s initial accreditation was granted in April, 2006, and the College continues with a reaffirmation of accreditation every six years.

Accreditation has several fundamental purposes:

1. To assure the quality of the institution 2. To assist in the improvement of the institution 3. It is required in order to provide Federal Financial Aid (Pell Grants) for students 4. It is a licensure requirement for several programs

In order to maintain accreditation, MTECH is responsible to:

1. Report any substantive changes within the college such as a change in leadership, the removal or addition of programs or facilities, a change in program hours of at least 25%, a change in delivery mode for the program, etc.

2. Maintain Completion, Placement, and Licensure benchmarks of 60%, 70%, and 70%, respectively

3. Hold two qualified advisory committee meetings each year for every COE

approved program a. In order for an advisory committee meeting to be considered valid:

i. At least three advisory committee members attend each meeting; one may attend virtually

ii. Advisory committee members must be in the position to hire or make recommendations to hire

iii. Advisory committee members must be representative of the service region

4. Obtain at least three completed Employer Verification Forms for every COE approved program, each year

5. Be in compliance with the 10 COE Standards as found in the COE Handbook of Accreditation

6. Have representatives attend the COE Annual Conferences, according to direction given from COE

7. Host a COE team visit every six years for evaluation of the College

Programmatic Accreditation In addition to the Institutional Accreditation with COE, some programs require an additional accrediting body specific to their own industry. This may be required if:

● It is a requirement of licensing or certification ● Advisory members request it for our region

Faculty Calendar The Faculty Calendar includes Blackout Dates, Faculty Meeting Dates, and Campus Meeting Dates. In addition, dates when specific items are due will also be listed on this calendar. Consult the Faculty Calendar when planning for Program or Course deadlines and prior to requesting time off. The Faculty Calendar follows the Master Calendar, which is the source for events and dates that appear in other calendars. The Faculty Calendar is both printed and online.

BlackOut Dates During each school year, there are several dates where time off should not be taken. These generally fall on the first and last day of each term to ensure that instructors are

MTECH Faculty Handbook 2020-2021 12

with their students on those dates. There also may be a blackout day for Opening Institute or other professional development. All requests for time off on a blackout date must be approved by the College President. Please take note of these dates when planning for vacations, medical or dental procedures, family events, etc.

Faculty Meetings Five Faculty Meetings are held each year and are scheduled on the Employee Calendar well in advance. Please make note of these dates, as they are mandatory for full-time faculty members. Part-time faculty should also attend unless it interferes with other full-time employment. All faculty must get approval from their program director to miss a faculty meeting. These meetings are used for important announcements, accreditation requirements, and professional development training.

Campus Meetings Four Campus Meetings are held throughout the year. These meetings are held at each campus during a given week and are for all employees to attend. Campus Meetings include announcements, professional development, and safety training. Employees are given the opportunity to discuss campus specific questions and/or concerns with administration. Attendance is strongly recommended, but not mandatory.

Graduation A graduation ceremony is held each May at the UCCU Center at Utah Valley University. This event is for all students who completed or will complete their programs between July 1 and June 30 of that year. All instructors who have students that fit in this category will be required to attend.

Students will receive a graduation gown and cords when they arrive at the UCCU Center and will be required to wear them throughout the duration of the ceremony. MTECH Employees will also be required to wear a graduation gown and MTECH stoll throughout the duration of the ceremony.

Professionalism Instructors are responsible for creating and maintaining a professional environment in the classroom and lab to prepare students with what to expect on the job. Some professionalism requirements include:

● Starting and ending class on time so students know the importance of arriving to work on time and staying on task for the duration of their shift

● Maintaining expectations of what is acceptable at work with dress code, language, hygiene, and appearance

● Instructors should not “friend” or “follow” their students on social media and vice versa. They should not socialize with students outside of class

● All measures of safety should be strictly enforced

Dress Code The dress code for MTECH employees is generally termed “business casual” with some exceptions for special occasions. Most Fridays are designated as “dress down” days and jeans are allowed. Instructors will often wear clothing appropriate to the program they teach. For example, a Medical Assistant instructor may wear scrubs with closed toes shoes and require the same for their students. An Automotive instructor may wear clothes and boots that would be required in a shop for safety. Regardless of the work assignment, all MTECH employees are expected to maintain appropriate standards of grooming, personal hygiene, and dress during working hours and while on college business. Please refer to the Employee Handbook for more information on dress code expectations.

Professional Development Full-time faculty are required to complete 20 hours of professional development each fiscal year, and part-time faculty who work an average of 20 hours a week or more are required to complete 10 hours. These hours are reviewed during the semi-annual employee review. The following qualifies as professional development:

● Webinars hosted by the Office of Teaching and Learning ● Certification or other training completed outside of MTECH

This training is logged on the Professional Development Tracking Form and is uploaded into Bridge at http://mtec.bridgeapp.com/, along with applicable certificates earned.

Industry Contact Tracking Instructors log the contacts they make during the fiscal year with industry on the Industry Contact Tracking Sheet. These are emailed or turned in to their Program Director and are reviewed at their semi-annual employee reviews. They are due by June 30th of each year.

Financial Aid MTECH participates in a variety of financial aid options that assist students in covering the costs associated with enrollment in most of MTECH’s certificate programs. Grants, scholarships, benefits for veterans, and other funding sources are available to those who qualify.

Federal Aid A Federal Pell Grant is awarded money designed to help undergraduate students pay for education after high school. The awarded amount depends on your expected family contribution (EFC), the cost of education at your school, whether you are a full-time or part-time student, and whether you attend school for a full academic year. The Federal Pell Grant Program is primarily designed to guarantee eligible low and middle-income students with financial access to a college of their choice. Keep in mind that Federal Pell Grants are intended to be the “base funding” upon which eligibility for all other aid is determined. A student may additionally qualify for other types of financial aid even if ineligible for a Pell Grant. To file for a Pell grant, the MTECH Registration, Enrollment Agreement, and Financial Aid application forms supply facts about your previous education, finances, and

previous financial aid and must be completed. In addition, you will need to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to generate a web based SAR (Student Aid Report), which provides facts about your income, family size, assets, etc. Both forms are available from our Financial Aid Office and must be completed for each award year.

Veterans Aid Veteran students applying for admission to MTECH may be eligible to receive credit for military training and experience. They should meet with a certifying official in the college counseling office to see if they qualify for Veterans Aid. Refer to the current list for VA Eligible Programs

MTECH Faculty Handbook 2020-2021 21

Page 23: 21202120 2120 21202120 2120€¦ · To enhance the employability of individuals through market-driven career and technical education. Institutional Accreditation Mountainland Technical

Scholarships To see what scholarships are available, students need to create a Scholarship Account with Scholarship Universe. After the student completes their profile in the account, they will see what scholarships they qualify for and what they need to do to apply.

Alternative Sources for Financial Aid If a student does not qualify for Federal Financial Aid, Veterans Aid, or scholarships with MTECH, there are other options for financial help including private loans, and sponsorships from agencies such as the Department of Workforce Services, Deseret Industries, Vocational Rehabilitation, and more.

Please refer students to the Financial Aid Office for more information.

Testing

Entrance Assessment Potential students must complete the MTECH application and have an MTECH Student ID Number before taking the assessment. Please refer students to the MTECH Student Portal if they have not already done so. Their picture will be taken prior to taking the assessment test for Northstar records and their Student ID Card. Most MTECH programs require meeting skill level requirements on the Entrance Assessment prior to registration. The Entrance Assessment measures the student's Reading Comprehension and Basic Math Skill levels. This aids in ensuring the student is adequately prepared for the basic reading and math principles that will be used in the program they decide to enroll in. The assessment test may be waived. Please see the following link for more information about providing proof of waivers and the assessment levels required for admission: Program Admissions Requirement (PDF) Other important items:

● A photo ID is required to test ● The Entrance Assessment is free and takes about 1 hour

● All Entrance Assessments must begin a minimum 1 hour prior to closing ● Entrance Assessments are available on a walk-in basis ● Additional prerequisites may be required for specific programs ● If your assessment score is lower than the minimum allowed for your program,

you will be provided a customized study guide based on the topics you missed and need to improve on. You can then retake the assessment

● There is a waiting period of one day after the first attempt, two days after the second attempt, and three days after the third attempt

Class Testing If you would like to use the testing center for testing please follow the procedures below:

1. Please contact Courtney Bleyle, the MTECH Testing Coordinator, at [email protected] with the requested dates and times. Please do not send a class to test before receiving confirmation of approval. If there is a last-minute need, please call 801-753-4110 to see if there is space available

Technology

Learning Resources MTECH has resources available from a variety of libraries and learning centers. Each program is responsible for providing learning resources for students, such as educational materials, instructional supplies, and instructional equipment. A formal orientation is done on the first day of class for all MTECH students. Instructors and/or staff members instruct on the use of all media, equipment, or learning resources. The instructor has the responsibility to teach his/her students in the proper handling of equipment or resources, including safety. More information can be found by reviewing the Learning Resources Media Plan found at the link above.

Orientation to Technology In general, lab environment upgrades are evaluated every 36 months and executed based on budget and utilization. Specialized labs used for advanced technical training are evaluated on a per program basis annually and upgraded based on budget, utilization, and program requirements. Equipment displaced from a lab update, that happens sooner than 36 months, may be utilized in growth areas, to update staff and admin equipment, or to upgrade existing labs with a lesser technical need and sufficiently inferior hardware.

Ancillary equipment (network hardware, projectors, etc.) is generally evaluated every 60 months and replaced as needed. This equipment can be evaluated sooner if needed, upon request. Antiquated equipment that falls below current support specification is removed from use and surplused or disposed of following the MTECH Equipment Plan specifications and the State of Utah recycling guidelines.

Media Resources Each instructor is responsible for requesting, maintaining, and updating their own program resources. Students are encouraged to attend public and/or private libraries for periodicals, manuals, professional trade publications, and audio materials. Internet access and other educational resources are also available to students through higher educational libraries. These resources are free of charge for MTECH students and other colleges or universities.

Helpdesk MTECH has a helpdesk system where requests for assistance can be made online ([email protected]) or by phone (801-753-4190). The Helpdesk can assist with repairing computers, updates, or troubleshooting other general technology equipment in the classrooms and labs.

Purchase of Computer Equipment or Software Equipment or software expenses must be approved through your Program Director prior to contacting the Technology Department. The Technology Department will purchase and service any approved computers or technology equipment purchased on behalf of MTECH. All computer labs have up-to-date equipment and software. Most computer labs can accommodate 16–25 students. Computer labs are used under instructor or staff supervision. .
