EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 4, 2019
My Dear Parishioners,
Praised Be Jesus Christ! This week marks several Anniversaries all of which happened on August 9th. First, we remember the 74th Anniversary
of the dropping of the Atomic Bombs on the cies of Hiroshima (August 6) and Nagasaki (August 9). Those bombs leveled those cies and ended many a life. And while they brought an end to a long and terrible World War, those bombs were impotent when it came to ending wars in the world. And even to this day, we know it as wars rage-on. This gives us something to think about as we enter this anniversary week.
The famous English scholar/thinker G.K. Chesterton put it well. When asked by a newspaper reporter, “What‘s wrong with the world?” He replied with a 2 word leer to the editor, it read, “I am”. There’s a lot of wisdom in his answer and believe it or not there’s a lot of power too. In fact, we find in his response something more powerful than an atomic bomb. We find hope. For when we recognize that we are part of the problem, we can begin to accept the fact that we might also be part of the soluon. When we recognize how our choices contribute to the build-up of evil, we might ponder how they might also contribute to the good. Or at the very least, help to minimize the evil in the world. Something to think about.
Here’s another. August 9th marks the Martyrdom of Edith Stein. Exactly 3 years prior to the dropping of the bomb, on that very day, August 9th, a woman by the name of Edith Stein was martyred in Auchwitz. Far from a pacifist, she knew the reality of war. Born a Jew in 1891 Poland, she knew the great “I AM” and in the course of her life, she came to know His Son, Jesus. Through educaon, Edith acvely engaged the bales of life, faith, conversion, theology and philosophy. She engaged them in such a way that amidst the ravages of war, she became a Carmelite Nun. And to this day her wrings, witness and life connue to inspire hope. Her Feast Day is August 9th
and her intercession is far more than any atomic bomb. I encourage you to think of Edith this week. I’ll close with a prayer she wrote, a prayer in which I find so much peace.
Before I do, there is one more anniversary. On August 9, 1908, our current Church on Meredith Street was dedicated and used for the first me for services. While a war was raging then, that dedicaon took place years before the bombs were dropped and decades before Edith Stein’s Martyrdom. And thru it all our Church sll stands.
This week, aware of our history, aware of all the good and evil and the connuance of war. Let us take a sober examine of ourselves and how we stand. Let us pray that this August 9th in this our Anniversary Year may be a me when we more acvely embraced the good, further it by Sharing the Joy of the Gospel and stand with Jesus Christ.
Peace,
Fr. Rogers
Prayer of St. Edith Stein
“God is there in these moments of rest and can give us in a single instant exactly what we need. Then the rest of the day can take its course, under the same effort and strain, perhaps, but in peace. And when night comes, and you look back over the day and see how fragmentary everything has been, and how much you planned that has gone undone, and all the reasons you have to be embarrassed and ashamed: just take everything exactly as it is, put it in God’s hands and leave it with him. Then you will be able to rest in him-really rest-and start the next day as a new life.”

DID YOU KNOW? The formaon program for deacons consists of weekly classes that are aended by the candidates and their wives. In addion to the weekly classes the candidates take classes twice a month in homilecs. During the six year program Jim was installed in the minor orders of Lector and Acolyte. In each step of the process the wives of the candidates had to give their permission to connue in the program. The final step in the formaon process was a comprehensive oral exam. Having passed this exam, Jim Ellio was or-dained a deacon by Archbishop Chaput in June 2013 at the Cathedral. One part of the ceremony that was very humbling is when the new deacons lay prostrate on the floor and the surrounding bishops, priests and deacons pray the Litany of the Saints over them. Many pa-rishioners from St. Patrick were able to aend his ordinaon which was quite emoonal for him. All the deacons in this class were as-signed to their home parishes. Since becoming a deacon Jim has served at Mass regularly and given the homily at Mass about once a month. He also assists at funerals, burials and other liturgical funcons. On a happier note, he has presided at one wedding in the parish and bapzed about fieen children. He also helps with adult educaon and other tasks as defined by Fr. Rogers.
