Game 1 Fresno, Calif.Liberty lost its seventh-straight season opener as San Diego State got hot at the right timeto defeat the Flames, 62-50, on the opening evening of Fresno State’s World Vision Clas-sic, at the World Vision Classic. The contest started out as a defensive juggernaut. AnthonySmith stole the ball from Kyle Spain, which led to TeeJay Bannister dishing an assist to RellPorter, which gave Liberty its first lead of the game, 10-9, with 8:55 remaining in the open-ing stanza. San Diego State bounced back with six-straight points, with the run beingcapped by a Billy White dunk to take a 15-10 lead with 5:59 remaining. The Aztecs thenmade a push near the end of the half, taking a 10-point advantage, 27-17, courtesy of a12-4 spurt, finished by a three-point bucket by Lorrenzo Wade with 45 seconds left in thefirst half. Fresno State got hot to start the second half, going on a 14-3 run capped by aRyan Amoroso jumper to extend its lead to 43-22, with 12:50 remaining. The Aztecs andthe Flames went back and forth for the remainder of the game, concluding with a Liberty6-0 run to finish the game, 62-50. The Flames were led by Porter who tied a career-bestwith 14 points.

Game 2 Fresno, Calif.Liberty kept the game close throughout, but was never able to completely overcome home-standing Fresno State, falling to the Bulldogs, 71-62, at the Save Mart Center on the sec-ond day of the World Vision Classic. Liberty started the evening hot, as they jumped outto a seven-point advantage, 15-8, courtesy of an Alex McLean bucket at the 10:36 mark.Fresno State regained the lead, 16-15, after a Hector Hernandez basket off a Kevin Bellpass with 6:53 remaining, capping a 7-0 run. The Bulldogs extended their narrow lead tofour points, 21-17, after a Bryan Harvey three-point basket with 5:43 remaining. Libertypulled back within one point after an Anthony Smith jumper and a Rell Porter bucket at the3:25 mark, cutting the lead, 22-21. Fresno State exploded and ended the half on an 8-2run, including two three-point baskets by Eddie Miller, going into the intermission with a30-23 lead. Fresno State came out of the break and extended its lead to 12, courtesy ofa Dwight O’Neil lay-up with 17:25 left in the contest, giving the Bulldogs the 37-25 ad-vantage. Liberty continued to keep the game close, cutting the lead back down to five, 55-50, in front of the home standing crowd, when B.J. Jenkins hit the front end of a two-shotfree throw. The made shot from the charity strip capped an 8-2 run with 3:44 remainingin the game. Fresno State bounced right back, thanks in part to the free throw shooting ofBell and Harvey. The duo went 11-of-12 from the line to close out the game on 16-7 run,giving Fresno Stats the 71-62 win. Smith led the Flames with 17 points on 7-of-14 shoot-ing, and Jenkins added 16 points and a team-high four assists.

Game 3 Fresno, Calif.Liberty fell in its final game of Fresno State’s World Vision Classic to the Portland Pilots,73-62, inside the Save Mart Center. The Pilots drew first blood, taking a quick 4-0 lead aftera Luke Sikma jumper at 17:47. The Pilots went on a 12-3 run, to take a 20-13 lead, cappedby a wide-open three-point bucket by Nik Raivio at 11:01. The Flames fought back on theheels of a 13-5 run, cutting the lead to 32-31 with 3:12 remaining. Two Robin Smeulders’free throws with 35 seconds left sent the Pilots into intermission with a 34-31 advan-tage.Sloppy play by the Flames, including three turnovers, helped the Pilots extend theirlead to nine points, 53-44, with 10:58 remaining. Portland later extended its lead to 63-50 on a three-point bucket by Jared Stohl, with 7:58 remaining. Liberty was able to trimthe Pilot lead back to nine points, 66-57, on a Smith layup with 2:32 remaining. But thatwould be as close as the Flames would get in the contest’s closing minutes, as Portlandclosed out the game with a double-digit victory, 73-62. McLean led the Flames by col-lecting his second-straight double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Game 4 Lynchburg, Va.After only being back in Lynchburg for roughly 24 hours, the Liberty Flames showed nosigns of fatigue, as they cruised to a 64-49 victory over the Coker Cobras, inside the VinesCenter. Early in the game, Coker’s Lukas Varaga picked the pocket of B.J. Jenkins on thefirst possession of the contest, leading to a basket to stake Cobras to a quick 2-0 lead. But,the advantage was short-lived as the Flames quickly shifted into high-gear. Liberty racedto a 22-6 lead, courtesy of a 22-4 run, capped by an Anthony Smith bucket at 9:47. TheCobras halted the run with a three-point basket by Ryan Fulwood at the 9:32 mark, cut-ting the score to 22-9. The Flames cruised down the court on the next possession, match-ing the three-point bucket with a Kyle Ohman marker at 9:10 to push the score to 25-9.Coker temporarily halted the streaking Flames, going on a 10-2 run, which included three-point buckets by Fulwood and Blake Terrell. The quick surge was capped by a SebastianLacayo basket in the paint at 6:12, cutting Liberty’s advantage to 10 points, 29-19. RellPorter grabbed an offensive rebound off a Smith miss and stuck it back, allowing theFlames to enter the intermission with a 41-30 lead. The Flames turned up the heat on theCobras exiting halftime, quickly extending the lead to 53-35, at 13:56 remaining, cour-tesy of two Ohman three-point buckets and five-straight points by Alex McLean. Ohmancontinued his hot shooting, hitting two more three-point buckets to push the Flames’ leadto 61-42 with 6:06 left in the contest. Smith led the way with a game-high 15 points and11 rebounds. Smith’s double-double was his first of the year and third of his career.

Game 5 Greenville, N.C.Alex McLean rebounded a TeeJay Bannister miss and laid the game-winning bucket inwith eight-tenths of a second remaining, sending Liberty to a 55-53 victory over East Car-olina, inside the Minges Coliseum. Liberty led the entire game until the closing second ofthe contest. Liberty milked the clock with under a minute to play, but an Anthony Smithmiss from behind the arc as the shot clock expired fell right into the hands of Brock Young,a freshman guard for the Pirates. Young pushed ball down the court on a fast break, andwas fouled by McLean in the lane with 18 seconds remaining. Young went to the line fortwo shots, sinking the first to tie the game, 53-53. Liberty called a timeout in between at-tempts and the freeze worked, as Young missed his second attempt. McLean grabbed therebound and sent the outlet pass to Bannister with 16 seconds on the clock. Bannisterpushed the ball toward the hole, setting the stage for the buzzer beater. Bannister dribblepenetrated and shot a fade away in the lane with three seconds left. McLean and Blair bat-tled for the rebound, but McLean had inside position. The Liberty senior then laid in thegame winner with eight-tenths of a second remaining, sending the Flames to a 55-53 vic-tory. Jenkins led Liberty with a then career-high 22 points on 9-of-15 shooting.

Game 6 Lexington, Ky.The Kentucky Wildcats had two weeks to mull over their loss to Gardner-Webb, 84-68, inthe 2K College Sports Classic, before taking on the Flames. The time off worked againstthe Flames, as Liberty fell, 80-54, to Kentucky in its first game since the setback, insidethe famed Rupp Arena. With the bad taste of its last contest against Gardner-Webb still inits mouth, Kentucky wasted no time getting started, opening the contest on a 12-2 run.The burst was finished off by Ramel Bradley’s second three-point bucket at the 14:55mark. Liberty got things going with a little spurt of its own, cutting the lead down to eight,20-12, with 6:58 remaining. The Flames received two free throws from Russell Monroe,another from TeeJay Bannister and Alex McLean, followed by buckets from Anthony Smithand McLean during the scoring span. Liberty continued to trim the margin, getting it toseven, 24-17, after a Porter three-point bucket, followed by a McLean layup at 3:27. Butthat would be as close as the Flames would get. Kentucky closed out the half on a 12-4run, capped by a Joe Crawford three-point bucket with 34 seconds left in the first stanza,taking a 36-21 lead into the break. The Wildcats came out of the intermission gunning,quickly extending their lead to 17 when Patterson hit two free throws at 17:20, pushing thescore to 42-25. The Flames never got closer, falling by 26 points. The Flames were led byMcLean’s 15 points and five rebounds. Smith chipped in 10 points, while B.J. Jenkinsscored nine points and grabbed four rebounds. Porter added eight points and grabbedfive of the Flames’ 15 offensive rebounds.

Game 7 Lynchburg, Va.After starting the season with five of its first six contests away from the friendly confinesof the Vines Center, Liberty fired on all cylinders in the Flames’ first home game in twoweeks, cruising to a 91-67 victory over the Longwood Lancers. Alex McLean scored ninepoints in the first four minutes, helping the Flames spring to an early 14-2 advantage. ATeeJay Bannister three-point bucket just 4:07 into the contest capped the opening scor-ing burst. Anthony Smith scored 11-straight points for the Flames, increasing the Libertylead to 25-10, with 11:06 remaining in the opening stanza. Longwood cut the advantagedown to nine, courtesy of a 10-4 run, finished by a made free throw by Ryan Bogan, with7:50 left in the first half. The Flames responded with a 12-2 spurt of their own to push theirlead to 20 points, their largest of the opening stanza at 42-22, with 3:05 remaining. Overthe half’s final three minutes, Longwood was only able to cut the Flames’ advantage by apoint to 46-27 at the break. The Flames started the second half by outscoring the Lancers,17-9. McLean capped the surge by hitting the second of two foul shots on a trip to thecharity strip with 13:53 left to up the Liberty lead to 63-36. The Flames continued to con-trol the game, reaching its biggest lead of the game, 35, on a three-point bucket by KyleOhman with 5:47 remaining to make it, 85-50. McLean paced Liberty with his third dou-ble-double of the year and 15th of his career. The senior scored 33 points and grabbed 11caroms, both game highs.

Game 8 Lynchburg, Va.Anthony Smith hit a three-point bucket with 23 second remaining, allowing Liberty to re-gain the lead, on the Flames’ way to an 86-81 triumph over Niagara, inside the Vines Cen-ter. The game’s final moments created a dramatic finish of an evenly played contest.Ahead 78-77, Niagara came down the court and missed a layup by Demetriu Williamsonwith 37 seconds left. Kyle Ohman grabbed the defensive rebound, setting the stage forthe game’s finish. Smith took a TeeJay Bannister hand-off after two set screens, knock-ing down the 20-footer at the top of the key to stake Liberty to an 80-78 advantage. Ni-agara called a timeout, hoping to develop for what looked like the game’s final play. Withnine seconds on the clock, Tyrone Lewis tried to go in for a layup before being blocked onthe backside by Ohman. Alex McLean grabbed the loose-ball rebound, prompting thegame’s dramatic climax. McLean was fouled by Andrew Patterson with eight seconds left.Liberty was in the double-bonus, giving McLean two free attempts from the free throw line.While McLean knocked down his first attempt, extending the lead to 81-78, Niagara headcoach Joe Mihalich received a double technical foul. Liberty was granted four more freethrows, which B.J. Jenkins knocked down all four, pushing the lead up to seven, 85-78.McLean still had one more attempt, which he hit, extending Liberty to a 86-78 lead andsealing the victory. All five Liberty starters reached double figures with Jenkins leading theway with a game-high 24 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Jenkins also grabbed four reboundsand dished out four assists. Bannister tallied 16 points and dished out a game-high sevenassists, while tying a then career high with five rebounds.

Game 9 Lynchburg, Va.Reigning Big South Conference Player of the Week, Alex McLean continued his dynamicplay by scoring 25 points, leading Liberty to its third-straight victory. The Flames toppedthe Presbyterian Blue Hose, 69-47, inside the Vines Center. Down 3-0, Liberty missed itsfirst four shots of the contest before McLean slammed home two points at 16:54, cuttingthe Blue Hose lead to one, 3-2. McLean’s bucket sparked Liberty to an 11-2 surge, fin-ished by a B.J. Jenkins jumper from the right elbow at 11:40. Jenkins’ bucket gave Lib-erty an 11-5 lead. Liberty quickly pushed the lead to 15 points, 27-12, when McLean tooka Jenkins pass to the basket at 5:05. The Flames were able to maintain the sizeable ad-vantage for the duration of the first half, heading into the break with an 18-point advantageafter a McLean bucket at 1:00. The Blue Hose stormed out of the intermission reeling offa 14-1 run, capped by a John Johnson bucket at 16:02, to cut the Liberty lead to five, 36-31. Liberty halted the Presbyterian surge with a McLean bucket at 15:48, extending thelead to 38-31. Kyle Ohman scored five-straight points to push Liberty’s lead back to nine,48-37, at the 12:30 mark. And the Blue Hose would get no closer, as the Flames closedout the game holding a 21-10 advantage, a run which included five-straight points by TimLayer. McLean was a force down low, leading the Flames with 25 points on 11-of-17shooting, while grabbing nine caroms, one short of his fourth double-double of the sea-son.

Game 10 Buies Creek, N.C.Despite 20 points by Alex McLean and B.J. Jenkins, the Liberty Flames saw their threegame-winning streak halted, suffering a tightly contested 73-70 setback to the CampbellFighting Camels, at Carter Gym. Neither team gained much of an advantage early on, asthe two squads traded baskets over the first four minutes of play. The homestandingCamels proceeded to net eight-straight points, closing the 8-0 run on a Preston Dodsonjumper at the 7:16 mark to stake Campbell to a 23-12 lead. Following a pair of free throwsfrom Jenkins and a layup by Jonathan Rodriguez with 4:45 left before the break, Libertystrung together a 15-3 run over the remainder of the half. Liberty scored the first threepoints of the second half to open its first edge since netting the game’s opening bucket,37-34 at 18:35. Jenkins tallied all three markers on a jumper on the Flames’ first posses-sion of the half and, after a Campbell turnover and foul, hit 1-of-2 from the charity stripe.The teams exchanged the lead over the next three minutes play until two made free throwsby McLean started a 9-3 run for the Flames at 14:09. Campbell erased the Liberty ad-vantage over the next several minutes, taking back the lead, 55-54, on a layup by Vejraskawith 7:32 left. After a Rodriguez bucket moved the Campbell lead back to four in the finalminute, Jenkins connected on a three-pointer with 29 seconds left to make it, 71-70. TheFlames forced a turnover on the Camels’ next trip down the floor, setting up a chance totake the lead with 18 seconds left. However, Liberty would miss a jumper with seven sec-onds left and turn the ball over on a walk after getting the offensive rebound. Wohlfeil hittwo foul shots in the closing seconds to seal a 73-70 victory for Campbell. McLean posteda double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

Game 11 Blacksburg, Va.The Virginia Tech Hokies trudged past the Liberty Flames, 58-46, inside Cassell Coliseum.The Flames jumped out quickly to a 5-0 lead, courtesy of a Rell Porter bucket and a KyleOhman three-point field goal at 17:23. Liberty then stretched the lead to four points, 7-3,when TeeJay Bannister tallied two points in the lane at the 15:20 mark. Virginia Tech tookits first lead of the contest, 8-7, when A.D. Vassallo hit a three-point bucket from the wingat 12:36. The Flames regained the lead, 13-8, courtesy of back-to-back three-point buck-ets by Anthony Smith and Ohman, with Smith’s coming at 9:18. The Hokies tied the gamefor the third time at 21 when Vassallo was successful on both attempts from the charitystripe with 56.4 seconds remaining in the first stanza. Liberty took what would be its finallead of the contest, going into the intermission when Ohman put back a Jeremy Andersonmissed jump with 2.8 seconds remaining to give the Flames the 23-21 halftime advantage.The Hokies sprinted out of the break to take a 29-23 lead, courtesy of an 8-0 run, whichwas capped by six-straight points by Malcolm Delaney. A three-point bucket at 16:21 fin-ished the run prior to the second period’s first media timeout. Virginia Tech extended thelead to nine points, 34-25, after another three-point bucket by Delaney and a Washingtonfree throw at 13:58. And that would be as close as Liberty would get, as the Hokies man-aged to push the lead back to double digits by the game’s close. McLean led the way forthe Flames with 14 points and five rebounds.

Game 12 Lynchburg, Va.Liberty held on in the end to defeat the Campbell Fighting Camels, 68-61, inside the VinesCenter. Both squads were playing their first contest in over a week due to the Christmasholiday, and started a little slowly at the offensive end. The score was knotted at 4-4, threeminutes into the game. The Flames then sprinted out on an 11-0 run, courtesy of three-point baskets by TeeJay Bannister, B.J. Jenkins and Kyle Ohman. The bucket by Ohmanat 13:18 gave the Flames a 15-4 advantage. Campbell charged with a 6-0 run, finished bya pair of free throws by Reggie Bishop, cutting the lead to 31-26, with 1:07 left in the firststanza. The Flames wasted no time answering the surge, as Ohman tallied the six pointsback when he hit two-straight three-point buckets. The last connection came with threeseconds left in the opening period, sending Liberty into the intermission with a 37-26 lead.Campbell scored the first points of the second half via two Rodriguez free throws, cuttingthe Liberty lead to 37-29 at 19:00. The Flames then extended the lead to 15 points, 44-29, courtesy of a 7-0 run, capped by a Bannister layup at the 17:39 mark. Game 13 Fairfax, Va.Anthony Smith scored a then career-high 24 points, but it wasn’t enough as the GeorgeMason Patriots hold on to win a physical battle, 72-64, inside the Patriot Center. GeorgeMason streaked to a quick 9-0 lead, courtesy of three-straight three-point buckets, cappedby Dre Smith’s second of the contest at 16:23. Anthony Smith stopped the surge at 16:15with a three-point bucket of his own, cutting the Mason lead to six points, 9-3. The Patri-ots extended the lead to 10, 13-3, via a Louis Birdsong layup at 14:45. The Flames slashedthe lead to four, 13-9, after scoring six-straight points. During the scoring burst, Smithconnected on an alley-opp dunk from TeeJay Bannister and tallied another bucket fromBannister assist. The Flames then tied the game for the first time since the opening tipwhen B.J. Jenkins went coast-to-coast, laying in a bucket and knotting the game at 20,with 5:17 left to play in the opening stanza. Liberty took its first lead of the game whenSmith hit a three-point bucket coming out of the intermission, taking the 30-28 advantageat the 19:12 mark. The Patriots then went on an 18-2 run, regaining the lead, 46-32,capped by an old fashioned three-point play by John Vaughn with 11:43 left to play. Lib-erty was able to cut the game back to six, 70-64, after Jenkins hit a three-point bucket with17 seconds left. But that would be as close as the Flames would get as Mason held on tothe eight-point victory, 72-64. Liberty’s Smith led the Flames with a then career-high 24points on 9-of-13 shooting.

Game 14 Lynchburg, Va.TeeJay Bannister dished out seven assists on Liberty’s first seven field goals, as theFlames won their sixth-straight home game, defeating the Nyack Warriors, 74-57, insidethe Vines Center. The Warriors quickly jumped out to a 5-2 lead after Brian Roberts openedup the game with a three-point bucket and a transition dunk, giving the Warriors the earlyadvantage at 16:50. Liberty answered back, staking itself to a 13-5 lead, courtesy of an11-0 run, capped by an Alex McLean bucket at 14:22. The Flames pushed the lead to 18-8, after another McLean bucket via a Bannister assist at the 12:03 mark. A Tracey Quar-les bucket and two McLean makes from the charity stripe closed out the half, sendingLiberty into the intermission with a 40-32 advantage. The Flames came out of the breakon a 15-7 surge, entering the second media timeout, extending its lead to 55-39. RussellMonroe hit a 15-footer from the corner off a Kyle Ohman pass at 11:22, capping the spurt.Liberty then extended its lead past 20 for the first time in the game when McLean took aB.J. Jenkins pass and laid it in with 8:33 remaining in the contest. The field goal gave theFlames a 62-42 advantage. Head coach Ritchie McKay then emptied his bench, as 14Liberty players made an appearance in the contest, helping the Flames cruise to an easyvictory. Smith tallied 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting, marking the first time in the his ca-reer he had scored 20 points in back-to-back games.

Game 15 Lynchburg, Va.Four Vines Center records were matched or broken as the Liberty Flames gallivanted to an84-45 victory over the Kentucky Christian Knights, in its final non-conference tune-up, in-side the Vines Center. Kentucky Christian started the game perfect, hitting its first threeshots, including back-to-back three-point buckets by Eric McKee to stake the Knights toan 8-5 lead at 17:29. The Flames then rattled off a 16-2 run to take at 21-10 lead at 13:23.B.J. Jenkins ended the surge with a layup. The run also included two three-point basketsby Kyle Ohman and another trey by Anthony Smith, his second up to that point in thegame. Liberty then went on another run to take a 38-19 lead. The 17-9 jaunt was cappedby Ohman’s third trey of the first stanza at 5:25. The Knights hit two three-point bucketsby Kalen Jones down the stretch to enter the intermission trailing the Flames by 15 points,45-30. The second half was all Liberty as the Flames went into the eight-minute mediatimeout yielding only seven second half points to take a 71-37 advantage. From there Lib-erty emptied the bench and cruised to the easy 84-45 victory. Smith led all scorers with20 points on 8-of-12 shooting.

Game 16 Asheville, N.C.The UNC Asheville Bulldogs had a hot hand from the floor, inside the Justice Center, send-ing Liberty home with a nail-biting 74-70 setback. The game started out at a slow offen-sive pace, with the score knotted at six apiece after K.J. Garland hit a jumper in the laneat 15:32. The Bulldogs then scored seven-straight points to take a 13-6 lead. The spurtwas finished off by a Bryan Smithson bucket at 12:20. UNC Asheville extended the leadto 23-8, courtesy of a 10-2 run, capped by a Kenny George dunk at 10:13. Liberty thenfound its outside shooting touch, finishing the half on a 23-11 run, trailing by three, 34-31, going into the intermission. The Bulldogs came out of the break holding a slight 15-10 advantage over the first five-and-a-half minutes, extending the lead to 49-41. The surgewas capped by a three-point bucket by Smithson at 14:32. The Flames took their first leadsince 16:09 in the first half when Kyle Ohman’s connected on a three-point bucket fromthe wing at 3:34, finishing off a 14-5 run, giving Liberty a 68-67 advantage. After Ohman’sbucket, Alex McLean dumped in two points off his own offensive rebound to extend thelead to three points, 70-67, with 2:11 left in the contest. Those would be the last pointsLiberty would score. The Bulldogs closed the game on a 7-0 run. Ohman led the way forLiberty in the scoring column, with 14 points and four assists, while Bannister tallied 13points and dished out a game-high eight assists. McLean and Porter chipped in 12 and11 points, respectively, as four Flames tallied double figures.

Game 17 Rock Hill, S.C.Liberty fell on the short end of a physical battle, inside the Winthrop Coliseum, as theWinthrop Eagles topped the Flames, 55-48. The Flames took an early 7-2 advantage at15:13, on the heels of back-to-back three-point buckets by Rell Porter and Anthony Smith.The Eagles then reeled off eight-straight points, taking a 10-7 lead. Charles Corbin fin-ished the surge with a bucket in the paint at 10:30. Liberty regained the lead, 13-10, afterJeremy Anderson and pair of back-to-back three-point buckets, his second coming at8:52. The Flames extended the lead to five, 17-12, after Alex McLean made both his at-tempts from the charity stripe at 6:40. The Eagles then closed out the half on a 16-7 run,capped by a three-point bucket at the buzzer by Michael Jenkins. The Flames managed totrim the lead to two, 42-40, when Smith connected on a three-point basket from the wingat 8:43. But that would be as close as Liberty would get, as Winthrop extended the leadup to eight, 51-43, when Jenkins knocked down a three-point bucket with 1:23 remain-ing in the contest. The Flames were able cut it back to a three-point deficit, 51-48, with48 seconds left, when Bannister knocked down a three-point bucket and two free throws.However, Taj McCullough solidified the victory with two transition buckets, sending theEagles to the 55-48 triumph. Liberty got a solid performance from Smith, who led all scor-ers with 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting.

Game 18 Lynchburg, Va.Anthony Smith scored a game-high 22 points and TeeJay Bannister dished out eight as-sists to help the Liberty Flames to its first Big South victory of the season, 79-63, over theCharleston Southern Buccaneers, inside the Vines Center. Charleston Southern jumpedout to the early 5-2 lead, courtesy of an Omar Carter bucket in the lane, followed by athree-pointer from the wing at 17:30. The Buccaneers then extended the lead to four points,8-4, via a three-point bucket by Shelton Carter at 15:34. The Flames responded, explod-ing on a 20-5 run to take a 24-13 lead, capped by two Alex McLean baskets from thecharity stripe at 9:10. The Buccaneers were able to cut the lead to five, 32-28, courtesyof a 15-8 advantage over the next nine minutes of play. Jamarco Warren’s three-pointbucket with 47.2 seconds left ended the spurt. Charleston Southern went into the inter-mission down four points, 34-30, after Tovi Bailey sank both his free throw attempts withseven-tenths of a second left in the opening period. The Flames opened up the second halfon a 24-9 run, taking a 54-39 lead into the second media timeout at 11:35. CharlestonSouthern then ripped off a 15-4 run, cutting the lead down to 10 points, 66-56, cappedby an Omar Carter bucket at 6:09. However, that would be as close as the Buccaneerswould get. Game 19 Lynchburg, Va.TeeJay Bannister dished out 15 assists and Alex McLean collected his seventh double-double of the season, as the Liberty Flames cruised to a 78-59 victory, over the CoastalCarolina Chanticleers, inside the Vines Center. Liberty struck early when Anthony Smithstuck a three-point bucket 13 seconds into the game, staking the Flames to the early 3-0lead. Coastal Carolina cut the Flames’ lead to one, 5-4, after a Phil Wallace bucket in thepaint at 17:46. Liberty extended its lead to 21-11, courtesy of a 16-7 spurt, capped by aB.J. Jenkins bucket at 10:32. A three-point bucket by Jeremy Anderson at 8:02 and twofree throws by McLean extended the Liberty lead to 15, 28-13, with 7:13 left in the firststanza. The Chanticleers quickly bounced back, cutting the Liberty lead to eight, 28-20,after an old-fashioned three-point play by Wallace at 3:56. The Chanticleers trimmed theFlames’ lead down to five at the break, 34-29, after six-straight points, which included aWallace bucket and two makes from the charity stripe by Logan Johnson. After Wallacescored on Coastal Carolina’s first possession of the second stanza to cut Liberty’s leadto three, 34-31, at the 19:36 mark, Liberty went on an 8-0 run. The surge pushed the leadback up to 11 points, 42-31, courtesy of a McLean bucket at the 17:47 mark. During theremainder of the contest, the score never got closer than 14 points, as Liberty cruised tothe 19-point victory, 78-59. McLean led the way with game highs with 22 points and 12rebounds.

Game 20 Lynchburg, Va.Alex McLean’s two free throws with 20.7 seconds left lifted the Liberty Flames over theHigh Point Panthers, 55-51, inside the Vines Center. The contest was close all night, as thefinal minutes determined the outcome. A B.J. Jenkins three-point basket from the top ofthe key put Liberty up by one point, 50-49, with 2:26 remaining in the contest. After a Eu-gene Harris miss, Arizona Reid fouled McLean on Liberty’s ensuing possession. Libertywas in the bonus, sending McLean to the line to shoot the one-and-one. McLean sank 1-of-2, giving the Flames a narrow two-point lead, 51-49, with 1:44 left. McLean then re-turned the favor to Reid, fouling the Preseason Big South Player of the Year, sending himto the line to shoot a one-and-one. Reid hit both free throw attempts, tying the game at 51,with 45.8 seconds remaining. On Liberty’s next trip down the court, McLean was fouledwhile rebounding a Jenkins miss, sending the Liberty senior to the line with 20.7 secondsleft. McLean sank both attempts from the charity stripe, giving the Flames the lead, 53-51. High Point went down the court, looking for Reid, who was heavily covered. Jeffersondumped a pass to Cruz Daniels, who lost the handle and dropped the ball out of bounds,giving possession to Liberty with four seconds left. After a High Point timeout, TeeJayBannister tossed a baseball pass to a streaking Jenkins who laid it in, solidifying the Lib-erty victory, 55-51, with 2.0 seconds remaining. McLean finished with a team-high 18points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Game 21 Lexington, Va.Anthony Smith scored 22 points and Jeremy Anderson erupted for 20 points, as Libertyrecorded its fourth-straight win, 87-81, with a victory over the VMI Keydets, insideCameron Hall. VMI raced out to a quick nine-point lead, 15-6, capped by a Quinn Brown-field three-point bucket at 14:47. The Flames quickly settled in after that bucket, taking a20-17 lead, courtesy of a 14-2 run. The run was capped by back-to-back three-pointbuckets by Anderson, the latter coming at 12:07. Liberty extended its lead, 32-26, with7:41 left in the opening stanza, courtesy of five-straight points by Smith. Anderson andKyle Ohman took over the next five minutes, pushing Liberty’s lead to 46-37, as eachguard nailed two three-point buckets. Anderson’s trey at 2:39 ended the Liberty run. TheFlames finished the half with a 7-2 advantage, entering the intermission with the 53-39lead. The Keydets came out of the break and quickly cut Liberty’s 16-point lead to sevenpoints, 57-50, via an 11-4 run, capped by a Travis Holmes three-point bucket at 16:10.Liberty then went up 12 points, 87-75, after TeeJay Bannister knocked down 3-of-4 freethrow attempts with 58 seconds left. VMI was able to slice the lead to six, but it wasn’tenough as the Flames held onto the 87-81 triumph. Smith led the Liberty charge with 22points on 10-of-16 shooting, as five Flames reached double figures. Anderson tallied a ca-reer-high 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting, including 6-of-8 from three-point range.

Game 22 Radford, Va.The Liberty Flames tallied 62 second-half points, but it wasn’t enough as the RadfordHighlanders recorded an 89-88 homecoming victory, inside the Dedmon Center. Libertywasted no time getting started, jumping out to an 8-2 lead, courtesy of B.J. Jenkins layupat 17:55. Back-to-back Anthony Smith buckets, his second coming at 13:28, extended theLiberty lead to five points, 12-7. Radford then went out on a 7-0 run, to take its first leadat 13-12. McDuffy capped the run with his jumper at 13:08. The Highlanders held a 7-5advantage over the final two minutes to enter the intermission with a 32-26 lead. A 10-5jaunt pushed Radford’s lead to a game-high 14 points, 49-35, with 13:22 left in the con-test. Amir Johnson’s three-point bucket capped the run. Liberty roared back on the heelsof a 15-2 run, cutting the Highlander lead to one point, 51-50. Jeremy Anderson’s layupin transition capped the run at 9:45. Within 90 seconds, the Radford lead was back toeight points, 61-53, via a Kenny Thomas three-point bucket that capped a 10-2 run with8:06 left in the second stanza. However, the game was far from over, as head coachRitchie McKay had his troops in quick foul mode after Anderson hit his three-point at-tempt with 42 seconds left. Anderson’s bucket cut the Radford advantage to four points,81-77. Liberty scored 11 points over the next 42 seconds but it wasn’t enough as Rad-ford held onto the 89-88 victory. Five Flames reached double figures, led by Jenkins’ 21points on 8-of-10 shooting.

Game 23 High Point, N.C.A cold-shooting night by Liberty helped send the Flames to a 67-53 setback against theHigh Point Panthers, inside the Millis Athletic Center. The Panthers jumped out to a quickadvantage with an 8-2 run, which included five-straight points by Arizona Reid to startthe game. Eugene Harris capped the opening stretch with a three-point bucket at 17:15.Liberty cut the High Point lead with an 8-4 spurt. High Point quickly pushed its lead to eightpoints, 21-13. The Panthers’ surge consisted of a Harris three-point bucket, followed bysix-straight points by Reid, including two free throws at 10:48. Liberty fought back to takeits only lead of the game, 22-21, reeling off nine-straight points. The spurt was finishedoff by an Anthony Smith three-point bucket at 6:55. High Point pulled away over the re-maining 6:55 to cruise into the intermission with a 36-28 advantage, outscoring the Flames15-6. Liberty was able cut its deficit to seven points a couple times during the second half,the last coming at 7:35. Alex McLean grabbed a Bannister miss, and put it back for abucket, cutting the Panthers’ advantage to 55-48. It was as close as Liberty would get therest of the way, as High Point went on a 12-1 run for a 67-49 advantage with 1:59 left.The Flames were led by McLean’s 10th double-double of the season.

Game 24 Lynchburg, Va.The Liberty Flames knocked off the first place UNC Asheville Bulldogs, 83-54, in front of6,566 raucous fans, inside the Vines Center. The Flames wasted no time getting started,staking themselves to a quick 9-0 lead. B.J. Jenkins capped the run with a bucket at the15:11 mark. The Bulldogs hit their first field goal at 12:36 when Sean Smith connectedfrom behind the arc. The trey cut the Flames’ advantage to 14-4. Smith followed with an-other tally from outside the arc on the Bulldogs ensuing trip down the court, slicing the Lib-erty lead to seven points with 12:14 left in the first stanza. Finding its shooting touch, UNCAsheville started to get things rolling, cutting the Liberty lead two points, 21-19, by virtueof a 12-7 spurt. Garland completed the run with a shot in the lane at the 6:54 mark. AnAnthony Smith free throw at 3:16 extended the lead up to seven points, 29-22, finishingan 8-3 Liberty burst. The Bulldogs then scored seven unanswered points to knot the gameat 29 apiece, with 42.5 seconds left before intermission. TeeJay Bannister was fouledwith 39.4 seconds, giving Liberty a chance to enter the intermission with the lead. The sen-ior guard sank both attempts from the charity stripe to send the Flames into the break withthe 31-29 advantage. Reid Augst knocked down back-to-back three-point buckets to openthe second half, providing UNC Asheville its first lead of the game, 35-31. Liberty quicklyretook the lead, 36-35, courtesy of a B.J. Jenkins trey and a Rell Porter marker at 18:11.Liberty went on to outscore the Bulldogs 47-19, securing the victory. Liberty had fiveplayers in double figures, headed by Smith’s 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting.

Game 25 Lynchburg, Va.Cold shooting and turnovers led to Liberty’s 59-50 setback to the Winthrop Eagles, insidethe Vines Center. Liberty was the first on the board when TeeJay Bannister found AlexMcLean on the block for a basket at 19:41. Winthrop quickly matched the Flames, asMichael Jenkins hit a jumper from the right elbow on the Eagles next possession at 19:22.The Flames then stormed to a seven-point lead, 15-7, due to an 11-2 run. A Kyle Ohmantrey capped the surge at 11:10. Liberty extended the margin to nine points, 18-9, after An-thony Smith connected from behind the arc with 10:18 left in the opening stanza. Libertymanaged just one more field goal the remainder of the first period, a B.J. Jenkins basketat 7:24, allowing Winthrop to tie the game at 21 a piece going into the intermission. Robin-son capped the 12-3 run with a jumper at the 1:05 mark. Winthrop opened up the secondhalf on an 8-2 spurt, taking a six-point lead, 29-23, on a Charles Corbin bucket with 17:10left to play. Liberty struck back quickly, tying the game at 29 with 15:55 left in the con-test, courtesy of treys by Ohman and Jeremy Anderson. The Eagles’ Jenkins connectedfor a three-pointer at 15:34, allowing Winthrop to take a three point lead, 32-29. However,Liberty rode a Jenkins bucket and a McLean marker to retake the lead, 33-32, with 12:41remaining. That would be the last time Liberty would hold the advantage. The Eagles tookthe lead and extended it 12 points, outscoring the Flames 15-5. Byron Faison’s basket at2:26 capped the stretch. The Flames were led by McLean, who tallied his third-straightdouble-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. McLean also collected his 500th careerrebound during the contest.

Game 26 Conway, S.C.Anthony Smith scored his 1,000 career point, as the Liberty Flames topped the CoastalCarolina Chanticleers, 65-51, inside Kimbel Arena. It took Liberty nearly three minutes toscore its first points of the game. B.J. Jenkins’ trey hit the bottom of the net at 17:12, togive the Flames an early 3-2 lead in a half which started out as a defensive struggle. TheFlames didn’t score another field goal in the following two minutes, yet regained the lead,6-4, when Jenkins hit another three-point bucket at 15:15. Five-straight points by LoganJohnson staked Coastal Carolina to its largest lead of the first half at 9-6. Johnson’s jumperfrom the right elbow capped the run at 14:15. Liberty then held the Chanticleers scorelessfor the next seven minutes. Using the solid defensive effort, the Flames tallied nine-unan-swered points to take a 15-9 advantage. Coastal Carolina came back in the closing fourminutes of the first stanza, going into the intermission on the heels of a 10-2 run. Jack Lea-sure hit a three-point bucket with 2.5 seconds left before the break, slicing the Libertylead to 25-21 at halftime. In the second half, Coastal Carolina tied the game at 32-32 witha basket in the paint by Anthony Breeze at the 16:34 mark. The Chanticleers then took itsfinal lead of the game, 37-36, courtesy of a 5-4 exchange, capped by two free throws byPhil Wallace at 13:55. Liberty followed by opening up the game with an 18-5 run, retak-ing the lead, 54-42. A Jenkins trey from the corner at 7:55 completed the Flames’ burst,as Liberty took control. Head coach Ritchie McKay’s squad’s lead never dropped below12 points the rest of the way.

Game 27 Charleston, S.C.Liberty let an opportunity to climb up the Big South Conference standings slip away, asthe Flames fall to the Charleston Southern Buccaneers, 87-82, inside the CSU Field House.Omar Carter’s jumper from the corner at 16:51 helped Charleston Southern stake itself toan early 10-2 lead. Liberty quickly answered the Buccaneers’ call with a 12-3 spurt, tak-ing a 14-13 lead. Jeremy Anderson’s trey from the wing at 13:15 capped the run. ShawnOuten retook the lead for Charleston Southern, 15-14, with his bucket at 12:30. Libertyquickly snatched the lead away via an Anthony Smith three-point field goal at 12:12, giv-ing the Flames a 17-15 advantage. Charleston Southern fought back with a 6-0 run,capped by two makes from the charity stripe by Tovi Bailey, giving the Buccaneers its finallead of the first half, 31-30. Liberty retook the lead going into the intermission, 34-31,courtesy of a Smith bucket at 1:33 and an Alex McLean make with eight-tenths of a sec-ond left before the break. The start of the second half was a seesaw battle with Libertyholding a slight 11-9 advantage, increasing its lead to five points, 45-40. Smith’s trey at15:25 topped the run. Charleston Southern then cut the Liberty advantage down to onepoint, 54-53, via an Omar Carter layup with 9:26 left. The Buccaneers would never trailagain and was able to hold on to the five-point victory, 87-82, despite a late surge by theFlames. Smith and TeeJay Bannister each tallied 20 points.

Game 28 Farmville, Va.Timely three-point shooting by the Longwood Lancers led to Liberty’s 79-68 non-confer-ence setback, inside Willett Hall. Alex McLean grabbed a Kyle Ohman miss under the bas-ket and placed it back in the cylinder at 17:32, helping Liberty to the early 9-4 lead.Longwood then scored five-straight points to tie the game at nine apiece when Billy Robin-son, Jr. tallied a bucket at 13:35. Liberty regained the advantage, 22-16, via a 13-7 spurt,capped by Anthony Smith’s old-fashioned three-point play at 8:45. Longwood took itsfirst edge of the game, 23-22, at 7:15 when Brandon Giles hit a trey from the wing, cap-ping a 7-0 run. The Lancers maintained their narrow lead, closing out the half with a 12-9 advantage to head in the intermission leading at 35-31. A Giles trey 66 seconds into thesecond stanza extended the Longwood lead to seven points, 38-31, with 18:54 left in thegame. Liberty cut the deficit down to one point, 40-39, after a Tim Layer steal from RyanBogan led to an old-fashioned three-point play by McLean, capping an 8-2 spurt with16:11 left in the game. The Lancers struck back quickly and hard, sprinting on 17-4 run,extending their lead to 13 points, 57-44. Giles ended the spurt with a trey from the wingwith 11:23 left in the second stanza. The Liberty deficit ran to 17 points, 67-50, after aBogan three-point bucket, his third-of-five in the second half, hit the bottom of the net atthe 7:45 mark. Liberty never got closer than 12 point until a Russell Monroe bucket cutthe deficit to the game’s final mark of 11 points, 79-68, with seven seconds left. Smith ledthe Flames with 24 points.

Game 29 Lynchburg, Va.VMI went to the charity stripe 20 more times than Liberty, proving to be the difference, asthe Keydets top the Flames, 81-79, inside the Vines Center. The Keydets capitalized onthree missed layups by Liberty’s Anthony Smith in the game’s opening two minutes, stak-ing them to an early 6-0 lead. Reggie Williams tallied four-straight points before TravisHolmes capped the run with an uncontested layup at 17:57. After Liberty scored four-straight points, cutting its deficit to two points, 6-4, VMI cruised on to a 13-2 spurt, cappedby a Quinn Brownfield trey from the corner at 12:24. Brownfield’s bucket gave the Key-dets a 19-6 lead. A Williams bucket with 57.6 seconds left in the first half gave VMI the39-34 advantage. Liberty narrowed the VMI lead back to three points, 39-36, with an AlexMcLean dunk with 12.6 seconds left in the opening stanza. The Flames opened up the sec-ond stanza on a 10-4 run, taking its first lead of the contest, 46-45, via a Bannister jumperfrom the left elbow, capping the spurt at 16:09. Smith and Kyle Ohman hit back-to-backtreys before Bannister’s field goal. Liberty extended its lead to four points, 53-49, scor-ing seven out of the next 11 points, ending with a McLean bucket at 13:56. However, VMItallied four-straight points by Chavis Holmes, tying the game at 53 with 13:50 remaining.Back-to-back Smith treys capped a 10-5 Liberty run, extending the lead up to five points,63-58, with 11:22 remaining in the contest. Chavis Holmes cut the Liberty lead down tofour points with his bucket at 4:19. At this time, VMI stormed out to a 10-4 run, taking a79-77 lead. VMI would never trail again. Smith led the Flames with 23 points and 11 re-bounds, marking his second double-double of the season.

Game 30 Radford, Va.On Senior night inside the Vines Center, it wasn’t Liberty’s elder statesmen who shined inthe Flames 78-71 victory over the Radford Highlanders, but a sophomore and a junior.The Liberty duo of junior Anthony Smith and sophomore B.J. Jenkins paced the Flamescombining to score 47 points, pull down 11 rebounds, dish out five assists and make sixsteals, while connecting on 17-of-29 shot attempts from the floor in the victory. Radfordjumped out to the quick 9-0 lead to begin the contest. Amir Johnson capped the spurt, hit-ting a trey from the wing at 17:20. Liberty managed to cut its deficit down to two points,14-12, on a Smith bucket in the paint at the 12:51 mark. The Flames then took their firstlead of the game when Jeremy Anderson hit his first trey of the evening from the wing at9:03, giving Liberty a 15-14 advantage. The Highlanders quickly countered by taking a 22-17 lead, as Cole Wilder hit a three-point bucket with 5:55 remaining. However, back-to-back three-point buckets by Smith helped Liberty retake the lead, 23-22, at 5:02. TheFlames took a five point lead, 33-28, into the intermission. A Jenkins’ layup with 58 sec-onds left capped the surge. A Jenkins layup 51 seconds into the second period extendedthe Flames advantage to nine points, 37-28, as Liberty scored the first four points of thehalf. Back-to-back three-point buckets by TeeJay Bannister and Smith pushed the Libertyadvantage to 11 points, 65-54, with 7:14 remaining. Liberty closed out the game, hitting5-of-6 at the free throw line in the final 53 seconds, to seal the victory. Smith led all scor-ers with a then career-high 29 points on 11-of-18 shooting.

Game 31 Lynchburg, Va.Five records were set or matched as the No. 4-seeded Liberty Flames topped the No. 5-seeded VMI Keydets, 103-88, in the quarterfinals of the 2008 Advance Auto Parts Men’sBasketball Championship, inside the Vines Center. The Keydets wasted no time gettingstarted, quickly staking themselves to a 6-0 lead, following buckets by Chavis Holmes,Adam Lonon and Reggie Williams. The run was capped with Williams’ marker at 17:53.Liberty cut its deficit down to two points, 12-10, via a 10-4 spurt. Back-to-back bucketsby Anthony Smith capped the run at 15:23. The Flames stormed to a five-point lead, 26-21, via an 11-3 run, featuring three-point buckets by Kyle Ohman, Jeremy Anderson andSmith. B.J. Jenkins’ trifecta at 11:09 ended Liberty’s spurt. VMI and Liberty continued totrade baskets with Liberty holding the narrow 34-30 advantage after a Williams marker at8:35. Alex McLean poured in two points with 16.1 seconds left, giving the Flames the 48-47 lead going into the intermission. An Ohman trey at 17:37 helped the Flames open itssecond-half lead to seven points, 59-52. Liberty pushed its advantage to 16 points, 71-55, via a 13-3 run. Five-straight points by Smith ended the run at 9:56. During one stretchof the run, Liberty held VMI scoreless for 4:55. A Chavis Holmes jumper at 5:54 dwindledthe Liberty advantage back to single digits, 79-70, with 5:54 remaining in the contest. Butthat would be as close as VMI would get the remainder of the night. Liberty received a ca-reer-high 30 points from Smith, marking the second-straight game the guard has set a newcareer high.

Game 32 Asheville, N.C.Liberty seniors Alex McLean and TeeJay Bannister valiantly tried to prolong the Flames’season, but the No. 1-seeded UNC Asheville Bulldogs crushed the duo’s hopes with their75-57 triumph, inside the Justice Center. Liberty quickly opened the game on an AnthonySmith dunk 12 seconds into the contest, giving the Flames an early 2-0 lead. After a Vin-cent James bucket tied the game at two apiece, Liberty went back to work. A Bannistertrey at 13:40 capped a 14-7 run, giving Liberty a 16-9 lead. The Bulldogs grabbed theirfirst lead of the contest at 4:46, courtesy of a 15-10 run, giving UNC Asheville a 24-23 ad-vantage. McLean tallied a bucket then hit two free throws at 3:14, helping Liberty retakethe lead, 27-24. The Flames failed to score the remainder of the half, however, and UNCAsheville went into the intermission on a 9-0 run, taking a 33-27 lead with them. A KyleOhman trey at 16:25 tied the game at 37-all, finishing off a 10-4 Liberty run to start thesecond stanza. Liberty then retook the lead, 43-42, when Anthony Smith tallied a bucketat 14:45. The Bulldogs stormed out to a 57-46 lead, courtesy of a 15-3 surge, capped bya John Williams basket off a Bryan Smithson pass at 9:14. Two free throws by Bannisterat 4:29 brought the Liberty deficit down to five points, 60-55, but that would be as closeas the Flames would get. McLean led all Flame scorers with 18 points on 6-of-9 shoot-ing, in his final game in a Liberty uniform. Fellow senior Bannister tallied 13 points anddished out five assists in a losing effort.
