• The heart works as the pump to push oxygen-rich blood to the organs, tissues, and cells through arteries
• Veins carry oxygen-poor blood back to your heart using your calf muscle as the main pump

Adventitia Layer
Intima Layer
• Arteries have thicker walls and have more strength and elasticity to handle surges of blood from the heart
• Veins have thinner walls and wider diameters
Artery Vein

3
The wider inner diameters of veins allow them to hold more blood, 60–70% of the body’s blood supply

Compression therapy is the treatment of certain conditions with graduated compression garments that exert a controlled amount of outside pressure to the limbs to improve venous return.
• Improve venous return • Reduce or prevent edema • Prevent venous disease • Treatment or
slowing progression of venous disease
• Post procedure

For effective treatment, compression garments must have graduated compression, with the pressure greatest at the ankle and gradually decrease as it comes up the leg
Chronic Venous Insufficiency—Causes of Varicose Veins
Pregnancy and Varicose Veins Causes
• Increased blood volume during pregnancy results in more pressure in veins
• Walls of veins relax due to increase in hormone levels
• Increased risk factors including: being overweight, successive pregnancies, carrying multiples, or standing for long periods of time
Prevention or Treatment • Compression hosiery can help
prevent or treat varicose veins
10–15mmHg LIGHT
15–20mmHg MILD
20–30mmHg MODERATE
30–40mmHg FIRM
• Compression measurements (symbolized as “mmHg” for millimeters of mercury per square inch) are represented by how much pressure is required to elevate mercury
• The higher the level of compression, the greater the therapeutic value for the more serious pathologies
• Does compression legally require a prescription?

• Minor ankle or leg swelling • Energizes legs • Beneficial for those
that sit or stand for long periods of time
• Travel
10–15mmHg LIGHT
• Mild ankle or leg swelling • Spider veins • Tired, achy legs and feet • DVT prevention • Minor varicosities
15–20mmHg MILD
20–30mmHg MODERATE
• Tired, achy legs and feet • Moderate varicosities • DVT • Post sclerotherapy

• Severe varicosities • Edema • Lymphedema
Patients should not wear compression if they exhibit: • Any skin irritations or conditions • Allergies to dyes • Congestive heart failure • Arterial disorders • Existing DVT
Patients should be cautious about wearing compression: • History of diabetes • Neurotherapy • Non-ambulatory patients unless prescribed by physician
If any of these conditions apply, patients should consult with their physician for advice.
Machine wash on gentle cycle and lukewarm water using lingerie bag
Do not use detergents, stain removers, fabric softeners, or bleach
Rinse well Air dry only
Do not use clothes dryer or expose to direct sunlight
Removing body oils from silicone beads and strips Use clean cloth with rubbing alcohol

• Patients should be measured when they first get up in the morning to prevent measurements based upon the affected area’s circumference after swelling has occurred
• Take snug measurements against the skin
• Avoid measuring over socks or slacks
• Never allow folds in stockings • Never remove
any wound dressing • Stockings should not be
too tight over dressings
Ankle Circumference Narrowest point above the ankle bone.
