Welcome to Westminster

Whether you are worshiping at Westminster for the first time or returning for a visit, we sincerely welcome you in the name of Christ!

Following our worship service, we invite you to meet today’s “ambassador,” Suzanne Curry, at the back of the sanctuary. She will have a gift for you, and can share information regarding our many ministries for children, youth and adults. She can also guide you to the hospitality area to enjoy fellowship or lead you on a tour of the church.

Children are welcome in worship! Westminster’s Kids’ Notes and worship bags are available each Sunday from the ushers. Kids’ Notes, a weekly companion to Westminster’s morning worship, emphasizes listening and seeing during worship. The bags include storybooks for children of all ages, coloring paper and crayons, a children’s bulletin for those age three to six, and bookmarks for hymns and Scripture.

Worship Aids - Large print Presbyterian Hymnals and hearing devices may be obtained from any usher.

The flowers in the sanctuary today are given to the glory of God from Ralph Lewis in loving memory of his grandmother, Lela Thompson and his aunt, Cathleen Hardy.

Sanctuary Flowers - Consider giving the sanctuary flowers for Sunday worship. Your gift of God’s natural beauty to remember or honor loved ones, or to celebrate an event, expresses praise and thanksgiving to God. Please contact Linda Watson during business hours at 302-571-6719 or [email protected].

During the summer, The Lord’s Supper is celebrated weekly at the 8:15 a.m. service and on the first Sunday of the month at the 10:00 a.m. service. Everyone is welcome at Christ’s table.

Baptisms are celebrated during worship on the second Sunday of each month. If you wish to have your child baptized, please contact Suzie Hurlock (302) 654-5214, ext. 127.

Are you wearing a nametag? Whether you are a longtime member or new to the church, wearing a nametag allows others the opportunity to meet you, greet you by name, and become more familiar with others at church. Nametags and markers are available in baskets at all major entrances. Extend hospitality, kindness and friendship by wearing a nametag every Sunday.

“Westminster to Go” Audio tapes and DVD’s of recent Westminster worship services are available. Please use the sign-out sheet when you borrow them from the front desk. Printed sermons are available on the literature tables the following week and on our website at www.wpc.org.

The Westminster Choir leads the music and provides choral offerings at our 10:00 a.m. worship service each Sunday morning through the end of June. Would you like to sing with us? Any interested singers are welcome to join us any or all of these weeks. Just come to the Sunday morning rehearsal at 9:00 a.m., downstairs in the Adult Rehearsal Room, to learn the music for that day. We love to see new faces in the choir loft! Questions? See Paul Fleckenstein, director, or call him at 654-5214 ext. 121.

Thank you! The Joint Finance Committee is encouraged by the response to the special appeal to give a little extra of your treasure to help the church keep active the many ministries our members and community depend on. As followers of Jesus Christ, we are called to give of our time, our talents and our treasure for the kingdom of God. Won't you prayerfully consider responding to the special appeal by giving an extra $96 this year? Please indicate "additional pledge" in the memo line on your check or on the offering envelope. Blessings to all!

Dining for Donations The next Dining for Donations is set for this Thursday, June 11, at the home of Peggy Carroll, 3106 Kennett Pike, Wilmington DE. 19807, 302-429-6690. Please RSVP to Liz Bacon 302-658-8419 or Peggy Carroll 302-429-6690.

Be a Part of Westminster By Heart. A congregation-wide invitation is being extended to all who love to tell biblical stories or to hear the stories told. On June 14 an informational meeting will be held in Rodney Chapel between services at 9:00 AM. The purpose is to explore and plan for the development of Westminster By Heart, a group which would join a larger national movement of Scripture By Heart groups. Westminster By Heart will provide a unique opportunity to study scripture, foster a deeper personal connection to the stories of the Bible, and develop skills for telling Scripture on a regular basis in worship. Churches where Scripture By Heart groups are active all report the transformative effects on the individuals who participate and on the congregation as a whole. Westminster is fortunate to have a strong base of talented tellers who have demonstrated their abilities at the Maundy Thursday services. Be a part of expanding this potential, connecting to the stories of our faith and sharing the story with our congregation. Even if you’re not sure that you’re ready to tell but you are fascinated by the process, you’re welcome! If you have an interest but are unable to make the information meeting, it is never too late to join us. Perhaps you are more interested in joining us from a Bible study perspective. Learning to tell a story is one of the deepest ways to really connect to the Bible. For any questions, contact Shelley Gnade (302 778-5101) or Mary-beth Howard (302 654-1783) or e-mail to [email protected].

Gardeners Needed Each year a dedicated group of Westminster members helps care for the Memorial Garden by weeding and pruning the plants.  Volunteers are asked to work a few hours in a designated two-week period.   If you enjoy gardening and can help sometime this summer, please call Ellie Furry at 239-4937 or e-mail [email protected].

Please remember in your prayers:

Those recently hospitalized: Grace Austin, Forrest Guth, and Wally Johnson. Westminster’s homebound family who can no longer attend worship with us. Send a card, say a prayer,

CONGREGATIONAL CARE AND PRAYER

12

Page 13: 21 · Web viewAs the rain hides the stars, as the autumn mist hides the hills, as the clouds veil the blue of the sky, so the dark happenings of my lot hide the shining of thy face

A Centering Prayer time occurs every Thursday at noon in the Ruth Christie Room. Anyone is welcome to participate. Basically, those who come spend thirty minutes in silence. Sometimes we have sacred music playing in the background. Silence allows us time and space to empty our minds, quiet our brains’ chatter, and be still and attentive to God.The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan often seem far away, and we may neglect to realize that Americans, as well as Iraqis, Afghans, and members of coalition forces, continue to die each day. As Christians, we are called to pray for the spreading of peace and justice and an end to violence. If someone in your family is serving in these wars, we ask that you let us know, so that we may include that person on our prayer list. (Contact Carol Marshall: 302-654-5214 ext. 131, or [email protected].). This week we pray for:

Those known to the WPC Community presently serving in the Middle East:Afghanistan: Neal Moody and Andy StofferIraq: Ken Bachman and Beau Biden

Those who have returned from service, possibly suffering from wounds or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, whose scars may be deep and long-lasting.

If you need a listening ear and sympathetic heart – a Stephen Minister is available to meet with you following the service and to offer compassionate support. Go to the piano in the sanctuary at the conclusion of the service, and someone with a Stephen Minister nametag will be there to speak with you, and if desired, to pray with you.

Mission emphasis for June is Women’s Development. Coming this Summer!Girl Talk. Summer can be a good time to catch up on the reading we’d like to do all year. And, in keeping with the June mission emphasis on Women’s Development, this might also be a time when you’d like to gather with other women to share your thoughts and feelings about books you’ve read. We will meet every other Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm. The first group, on June 24, will meet at Westminster. After that, we’ll see if people would prefer to meet there or in the discussion leader’s home.
