2.1 Patterns of Multiplication
• Objective: 6.C.1.a Multiply Whole Numbers • Assessment limits: Use a 3-digit factor by
any other factor with no more than 2-digits and whole numbers (0-10,000)
Multiplication•Repeated Addition
Factor•A number multiplied to give a product; for example, 3 and 5 in 3 X 5
Product •The answer in a multiplication problem
Use basic facts and patterns to find
products• Find 400 X 700• Basic fact is 4 X 7 = 28• Pattern: 4 X 70 = 280
4 X 700 = 2800
40 X 700 = 2,8000
400 X 700 = 280,000
You can count the zeros in the factors
• Step 1: Find the Basic Fact 4 X 7 = 28• Step 2: Count the number of zeros in each
factor. • 400 X 700 • 2 Zeros + 2 zeros= 4 zeros• Step 3: Write the zeros to the right of the
product in Step 1 • 400 X 700 = 280,000
Product from Step 1 Zeros From Step 2
Think: Sometimes there is an extra zero in the
product.• Can anyone give me an
example?• Basic Fact 5 X 6 =• Pattern: 5 X 60 = 300
5 X 600 = 3000
50 X 600 = 3,0000
500 X 600 = 300,000
