Dear Parents and Students Recently I was delighted to receive a phone call from a parent expressing her profound pride in the example of “felicity” shown by Loreto students a ending a recent interschool event. Here, she told me, our girls stood out as being ‘truly special’ – not because of their performance or success (although I am sure that was superb) but because of the way in which they genuinely cheered and celebrated the success of each and every compe tor – not just Loreto girls, but all girls who were compe ng. They encouraged and mo vated each compe tor to reach the finish line and to be proud in so doing. This posi ve and suppor ve a tude reflects much of what it means to be ‘felicitous’ and ‘Lore an’. This brings to mind an extract from “Teachers Who Change Lives” (Metcalfe & Game 2006) that I’d like to share. In this book Julie McCrossin, radio broadcaster, describes the school of her youth as being “a powerhouse of ac vity”. I believe Loreto schools to be such. “When a school is a powerhouse of ac vity, this diversity doesn’t fragment the community or produce narrowly specialized students. On the contrary, the poten al of each student is drawn out by connec ons between students, between ac vi es and between the school and the broader community . . . the values are those of cultural inclusiveness and respect . . . A diverse school offers everyone the chance to excel at something; it also offers everyone the precious opportunity to be valued when they are not the best. Students learn that there are some ac vi es at which they will fail, and others they enjoy without honours. They learn that their achievements are important but only part of life. They learn openness to different experiences and respect for difference. They learn the value of co‐opera on, and the difference between crea ve and destruc ve compe on. In a ‘powerhouse of ac vity’ ferocious compe on is transformed into an inclusive spirit of co‐opera on. A school’s culture is rich when applause for each person is recogni on for the role of every person. The school is teaching values by valuing everyone’s unique contribu on”. This is the Loreto of my childhood and this is the Loreto Coorparoo of today. Dear Lord, We give thanks for the many gi s with which we have been blessed and most especially for the gi s that we are to each other. Let us find in others always, your love, your spirit and your inspira on. Let us rejoice in our difference and celebrate our diversity. Amen. ANNUAL SCHOOL REPORT 2010 In accordance with the “Schools Assistance Act”, the annual compliance report for the College for
2010 is now available. The report for 2010 can be accessed ‘on‐line’ via our website

CONGRATULATIONS To Loreto’s Year 8 Readers’ Cup team who last week came a creditable third in the Children’s
Book Council Readers’ Cup compe on compe ng against 19 other schools. Well done Rachel Larkin, Emily Love‐Linay, Nicola Tracey and McKenna Buckley.
To the following musicians, each of whom has been selected into the Queensland Conservatorium
State Honours Ensemble Program: Natalie Baker, Sia Cambaclis, Sophie Catsoulis, Larissa Claridge, Marianne Curran, Zara Duffy, Rachel Farrah, Elise Fort, Isabella Kirkman, Maddie Li le, Hayman Lui, Charlo e McMahon, Rebecca Meimaris, Laura Quinn, Lauren Roberts and Maddie‐Rose Young.
To Kirsty Wrice (Year 11) on her selec on to represent Metropolitan East in the State
Championships for Golf to be held in Townsville in July. We wish Kirsty all the best.
BEST WISHES Our thanks and best wishes to Ms Carmel Hickey for her me given generously to the students this term in
place of Mr Kenny. It has been a pleasure to have her as part of ‘our Loreto family’. This coming term both Mrs Kathy Hedemann and Ms Diane McGowan will be taking leave. We wish them
well for their break and hope that their me away will be blessed. “FOOD FOR THOUGHT” from The Week 10/6/11 Woman Power Teams that include women are collec vely more intelligent than teams without them, says the Harvard Business Review. Harvard researchers gave subjects aged 18 to 60 standard IQ tests and assigned them randomly to teams where they were asked to complete several tasks including brainstorming, decision‐making, visual puzzles and one complex problem. Teams with higher average IQ scores were not as successful as the teams with women. In fact, the data showed “the more women the be er” un l the extreme end – a very small amount of men is be er than all women. The researchers found women were more likely “to listen to each other, share cri cism construc vely and have open minds” in team se ngs. FINAL PRINT EDITION It could be argued that this week’s edi on of the College Newsle er is a “collector’s item”. I’m not so sure about that, but it definitely marks a point in me as the “final print” edi on. From next term, the Newsle er will be published in electronic format only. We thank you for suppor ng this environmentally sustainable ac on. CONDOLENCES The College expresses its sincere sympathies and condolences to Fr Wayne Stanhope on the recent passing of his father, Alan, in Melbourne. May our Gracious God grant him eternal rest and peace. Amen. On behalf of the staff, I take this opportunity to wish all students and families a happy, safe, res ul and enjoyable holiday. I am aware that a number of families will be travelling extensively, we thus pray for you in your journeys. May your holidays be filled with special mes and loving memories.
Yours sincerely
Cheryl Hamilton Principal

Sport Department News BSGSA Hockey There will be no games this week. All games will recommence on Wednesday 20th July 2011.
Results/Match Reports: Round 5 ‐ 15 June
Open One ‐ The big moment had finally arrived this
round – our own version of State of Origin, Loreto One versus Loreto Two. It was mate against mate, Kate against Kate. I could tell on the bus on the way to Downey Park that the friendly cha er between the girls on both teams and suppor ve encouragement amongst them was a mere cover up for the simmering compe ve tension underneath – or maybe that was just my imagina on! The match started off with a very quick tempo and it did not abate one bit over the whole dura on of the game. The ball found its way in both teams scoring zones regularly with great skill and was met with equally capable defence, making the fixture an exci ng and evenly matched contest. Full credit must go to Mr Alan Lane‐Richardson, the hockey coordinator, for distribu ng the talent so evenly across the two teams. Thanks to some great passing by Katherine Ware and scorching runs up the centre by Tyler “the Typhoon” Kilvington playing in the halves, our forwards enjoyed great ball distribu on and it payed off, with 3 goals being scored by Jemma Stubbs at centre forward, Leah Carey from right wing and Annabel Tapsall coming in to the top of the circle from le inner. Brooke Postle truly played the role of a great inner on the le side through some aggressive carries into the opposi on’s half, backed up with great turn and runs to supply rock solid defence. Ellen Carey fulfilled an important role in our back line, communica ng well with the girls up front to fill gaps and coordinate clearances. A er a highly entertaining compe on, Loreto Two replied with three goals of their own by the end of the match, resul ng in a 3 all draw. This was a great result and it was very pleasing to see the con‐test played in such a fantas c, friendly spirit. The girls on both sides showed what great sportswomen they are and there was a cheerful, celebratory atmosphere on the bus
back to Loreto. Congratula ons to both teams! Ma Lourigan ‐ Coach
Open Two ‐ The Loreto 2 team had a nail bi ng game
against Loreto 1 this week, drawing 3‐3 with them. It was a very compe ve game, with both teams having opportuni es to score. The Loreto 1 team had possession of the ball for a majority of the first half but the girls from Loreto 2 fought hard to level the scores by the end of the
game. Great work Tahlia Simms who scored 2 goals and Wade Bilton who scored 1. Nice
job in goals by Kate Metyard. Eliza Mooney ‐ Coach
BSGSA Competition
With the big match over both coaches can now relax and prepare themselves for the difficult task of guiding their teams through the finals.
At the end of the preliminary rounds Loreto Two and St Rita’s One e with thirteen points followed by Loreto One on eleven points. This means Loreto One will play Mt St Michael’s One and Loreto Two will play St Rita One in the first of the semi‐final rounds on Wednesday, 20th July. Good Luck!
Alan Lane‐ Richardson ‐ Hockey Coordinator
Soccer There will be no games this week. All games will recommence on Wednesday 20th July 2011.

Results Round 5 ‐ 15 June Junior A ‐ The Loreto Junior A soccer team has remained
undefeated for the 2011 BSGSA compe on with a 0 ‐ 0 draw in Wednesday’s game against All Hallow’s. Loreto started strongly with some very good chances to score early in the game. Mikayla Papantoniou had an opportunity to score but
was denied by the post. Jemima Moore, Bri any Ryan, Emily Hayes and Krystal Hatzipapas all played outstandingly in the defence. All the girls played very well, so well done team. Thank you to Peter Papantoniou for his assistance at the game. Enjoy your school holidays. Jim Bellos ‐ Coach

Debating News Last week was the end of Round Four. The girls had a good round with seven of thirteen teams winning.
Overall, Loreto has done par cularly well with five teams gain‐ing at least three wins out of a possible four. This means there is a strong chance of them going through to Semester Two Final Rounds. They are 11.1, 9.1, 8.1, 8.2 and 8.4.
No fica on from QDU will come through while we are on holi‐days. I will alert all coaches as soon as I hear.
I wish to thank the girls and coaches in the other teams who have also acqui ed themselves well. I have been par cularly proud of everyone’s good sportsmanship – whether it was a er a win or a loss. Being gracious in winning or losing is most important.
Knowing how busy our lives can be, I wish to thank those par‐ents who have a ended weekly. It means much to the girls to have support there. I wish everyone a happy, relaxed holiday and will see you all for the last rounds of the year.

great passes into the shooters. Coach – Rebecca Healy
Intermediate C – Loreto Intermediate C defeated Lourdes
Hill College 27‐15 in the last round of Netball for the term. The girls had a shaky first quarter, in which the opposi on looked the more dominant team. teamwork. Coach – Bridget O’Connor
Intermediate D ‐ Bye
Open A – The Open A team had a very close match with Lourdes, with Loreto winning by one point. Excellent work down court by Jenna Nash and Clare Gill in a ack who threw some spectacular high balls to Georgia McNae. There were some excellent rebounds from Josie Woolaston and Briony
