Residents to fight ‘unfair’ lease increaseWaimea Village lease set to double

Some Waimea Village residents’ fear they will be forced out of their homes after it was re-vealed that their lease payments could almost double.Waimea Village owners, Michael and Carolyn Wright issued a break-down of costs to the W a i m e a V i l l a g e R e s i d e n t s Committee – which in turn passed it on to oth-er residents last week. The annual Canterbury Community Trust Lantern Celebration attracted a re-cord crowd for the walk up the Centre of New Zealand on Saturday night.Crowds gathered at the Botanical Reserve to listen to carols from Nelson City Brass, before two unusual Swiss mountaineers opened the ceremonial gates and the walk up the hill began at 8pm. The celebration was a Summer in Nelson event, presented by Nelson City Council.Along the way walkers encountered the Snow Queen, Robin Hood and his Merry Men, the ancient knitting woman, two talking trees, the King of the Mountain and many other wacky installations. At the top of the hill the colourful Samba de Sol band entertained, along with a dance based on the myth of Maui and the sun god. Coming back down the hill in the dark there were laser lights playing on the trees, a choir singing and colourful lanterns lighting the gateway. Organisers estimated there were around 3600 people that attended, about 500 more than usual.

Lantern celebration the biggest yet

• Some Nelson police will honoured this afternoon at the Police Pay Parade. The annual parade will honour several officers including two promotions for Sergeant Karl Parfitt and Inspector Ross Lienert. Other awardees are Sergeant Lyn Flem-ing for the NZ police equity and diver-sity award; Senior Constable Christopher Gladstone for the district commander’s commendation; Mr Paul Winter for a 21 year service badge and Sergeant David Lauer, Senior Constable Terry Hunt, De-tective Nigel McMorran and Senior Con-stable Martin Tutton, all for the 14 year long service and good conduct medal.

• The opportunity to visit the country’s largest farm will open up next week. From next Tuesday, 28 December people will be able to drive through the spectacular high country landscape of Molesworth Station, in south Marlborough. Last year around 9000 people made the road trip during the 14-week open period. Anyone planning to travel on the road should first check the road is open, says DoC.

Others are angry. One man, who owns a home in Waimea Village to house his elderly mother, says he was told when he bought the two-bedroom cottage that the lease would increase, but only at minimal rates. “I’d be bloody pissed off if they tried to force this [increase] on us.”In the breakdown of costs, WHK principal John Murray writes that $118,087 is needed for management costs, including $75,000 for a manager’s salary, $22,255 for manager’s accommoda-tion and a further $20,832 for vehicle leases. It also states that $29,974 is needed for preventative road maintenance. But the figure most con-cerning residents is the maintenance fund. As stip-ulated by the lease agree-ment, Michael and Carolyn are required to have a fund for maintenance and repair not less than two percent of the estate’s market value. According to John’s report, the value of the estate is $19,790,000, meaning a fund of $395,800 is needed. They don’t have the money, but plan to raise it over five years through the increase in lease fees.Residents Committee chair Barry King, says the committee will fight the proposal all the way to arbitration if necessary, despite threats urging them not to. “They [management] turned up thinking it would be a cakewalk [to increase the prices], but they found the committee isn’t as silly as they thought we were. “At a meeting we had, we were threatened that if

we took it to arbitration those figures would be padded out even more, none of the committee takes kindly to threats. We’re determined that this isn’t going to happen.”He confirmed that the committee had sought advice from lawyers and accountants in fighting the increase.Richmond councillors have also added their

voice of disapproval at the plan. Kit Maling slammed the proposal and says he is willing to fight for the resi-dents. “I think that’s outrageous. It’s not fair; a lot of those are retired people without much money. They are a vulner-able part of our community and many could not afford that sort of increase.”Judene Edgar, another Rich-mond ward councillor, says the increase is “untenable”. “The majority of residents in there are not going to be able to sustain a price increase of that magnitude with no jus-tification.”Both Michael Wright and John Murray refused to comment when contacted by Nelson Weekly. A reply to the proposal is not

due from the residents committee until the end of January, until then Barry is urging calm in the Village.“He can’t just change things willy, nilly. We have a lease, signed on both sides and the lease lays out what he can and can’t do. We are asking for people not to panic, we live here too and we will do the very best we can. We are handing this, make no mistake.”

Walking Auckland’s famous Franklin Rd eight years ago, the suburban street upon which every resident lights their house for Christmas, Stan and Bev Hollis were in-spired.That inspiration made its way to their Atawhai home where they began decorat-ing their house each Christmas. Over the years as the collection has grown, so to as the size of the display and the amount of time it takes to put up.Stan says several weekends are spent on the lights and his Blenheim-based son joins him to help with the high stuff.“We start putting it all together at the start of November; it probably takes about 60 hours all up.”The Hollis’ along with 18 other home own-ers in Nelson, are taking part in the regions Harcourt’s Light Up Nelson event, where people can vote on which house is lit up the best in an online competition, run by Clas-

sic Hits Radio Station. A map is available on line and people are encouraged to jump in their car and visit the brightly-lit homes. Bev says it’s a thrill to see the look on the faces of the children who come along to check out the lights. “It’s great and we have a train and all sorts they can watch so they get a real kick out of it.”Once pulled down, the decorations the couple has collected almost fills their ga-rage and Stan says he would hate to think how much they have spent on the decora-tions. “Let’s not go there,” he joked.Despite using 50 multi-boxes to plug in the lights they say the increase to their power bill isn’t much, certainly not enough to be a deterrent. “It’s fun and I think we will con-tinue to do it as long as we are having fun,” says Bev.To find the Light Up Nelson map visit www.lightupnelson.co.nz.

Mad rush is onChristmas shopping into final days

Robynne Thomas, of Atawhai, walks through a busy Nelson Market on Saturday morning. Many retailers reported they were very busy on on the last weekend before Christmas. Photo: Andrew Board.

Retailers are bracing for a last minute rush from Christ-mas shoppers after a “steady” weekend.Uniquely Nelson manager, Rowena Richards says retail-ers she has spoken to were happy with the weekend’s trade – the last before Christ-mas Day – but it certainly was not off-the-charts successful.“There was a nice atmosphere around town on the week-end and some retailers I’ve spoken to were so busy they had queues to the counter, but most said it was a steady weekend. There was a good

flow of people in town, but not madness.”Fashion Island manager, Nicola Dolan says she is ex-pecting a busy week ahead and also described last week-end as steady. “The feedback I’ve had from tenants is that customers are shopping and spending, but they want a bargain. We are expecting Thursday and Friday to be ba-nanas.”The biggest shopping day of the year will most likely be reserved for Boxing Day though with bargain-hunters set to get an even bigger deal.

Dear Sir or Madam,You were wonderful, thank you. Your support for the Lions Club Heads Up Campaign has helped us raise a whole lot of money for child-oriented chari-ties. Your inventive photographs and interesting articles have encouraged many folk from the Nelson Region to dig out old and foreign money which has found its way to us. We sent it via Resene Paints and Fastway Couri-ers from Nelson to Wellington where other Lions sorted it and added it to similar piles from other places all over the country. Much then went direct to the Reserve Bank where they changed it dollar for dollar, some went to be melt-

ed down in Christchurch, and some was carted overseas such as Aussie dol-lars and Euros. Lastly, much of the for-eign money is being sold on Trade Me. Groups like Outward Bound, Spirit of Adventure and Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre will benefit directly so once again, thank you Nel-son Weekly, and your readers, for such brilliant support.Yours Sincerely,Paul Lunberg,Nelson North Lions Club.

Dear Sir,I would like to thank Nelson Weekly for the eye catching article in Tuesday 30

November paper for ‘Peanut League Tee Ball’. Reporter Phillip Rollo enjoyed watching the half hour session and pre-sented a great photo and article. As a result of the article, inquiries flooded in and over 30 turned up the following Saturday. Our Regional Game Devel-opment Officer Lesley McIntosh has re-ceived positive feedback and inquiries from Softball NZ to take our fun Peanut League ideas for 3-4 year olds to other centres in NZ. A comment from a fami-ly: “It’s awesome to have something fun for under 5’s, that’s got the basic skills for Tee Ball.”Julie Brockie,Coordinator Peanut League Tee Ball.

Jared Dacombe and Big Brother mentor Turhan Djemal are counting down the days to the 2011 Trolley Derby. But the wait is nearly over as the Robertson’s Trolley Derby is now confirmed for March 26. This date ensures competitors get plenty of time after the summer holi-days to finish completing their trolleys in time for the iconic race down Colling-wood St.The associated charity for the event will be Big Broth-ers Big Sisters, a youth men-toring organisation. It is based on a programme that helps young people reach their full potential, by pair-ing them with adult mentors who create a positive differ-ence in their lives. Gilbert Robertson, Director at Rob-ertson Chartered Account-ants, says the locally based charity was chosen for the Robertson’s Trolley Derby because it was a good fit with the idea of building backyard trolleys. “For us, the process of building a trolley is all about adults working along-side kids and having fun on

a cool project,” Gilbert says. “Most of us had our parents, grandparents or other fam-ily members build us trolleys as kids, and for next year’s derby I am building one with my kids, but there are many young New Zealanders who don’t have positive role mod-els in their lives. The job Big Brothers Big Sisters does for Nelson families are of huge

importance. It is truly inspi-rational.”Jared, 12, and Turhan are Big Brothers Big Sisters’ 300th ‘match’ from the Nelson pro-gramme and have already started working on their trolley for the race. Turhan is a Nelson Trolley Club member and was paired with Jared who has been compet-ing in the derby for the last

few years. There will also be different activities in the build up to the derby that will support Big Brothers Big Sisters.“The derby is a great excuse for children and grown-ups to build trolleys together and then go flat out down a hill, so we encourage Nelsonians of all ages and abilities to get involved.”

In my experience, many people seem to miss out on a good night’s sleep, which is often the case in the hectic world we live today. Greater work-loads, looming deadlines and other demands all leaves precious little time for quality rest or sleep. Did you know that a lack of sleep clouds mental process and hinders decision making? In some severe cases, this can lead to states of depression. Before you know it out comes the trusted medica-tions just to get a good night’s sleep you deserve. Like you, I regularly find myself working well into the night, and when it comes time to go to bed I sometimes can’t sleep because my mental state is still very alive and active processing the day’s events. Does this happen to you, too? If so, please read on...

From my own experience, I know sleep and stress play a big part in aggravating my Arthritis, and my body soon lets me know by causing varying de-grees of discomfort in most joints. That affects my ability to sleep or obtain the rest I need to mend. 5-HTP is a naturally occurring amino acid obtained from the seeds of the Griffonia plant that work to cross the bridge between tryptophan and the brain chemical, serotonin. Serotonin soothes and calms the nervous system and helps create those feelings of wellbeing that we all so cherish. Studies show 5-HTP can provide significant im-provements with mild bouts of depression, and also supports mood balance and the body’s natu-ral responses to restlessness, stress and anxiety.

To combat these, I recommend a daily dose of o2b’s 5-HTP to support normal and healthy levels of sleep, rest and relaxation. o2b Healthy retail and manufacture some 200 dietary supplements. Over the year’s, we have made some of NZ’s leading household brands that are commonly found in your local health store! • Four container ships, a new tuna ves-sel for repairs, the Cape Ferrat departure, the Monte Stello, nine large fishing vessel movements and several smaller ones, a log ship, a cement ship, some ships refu-elling, all led to the port personnel being kept very busy.• A small conflict on Wednesday night between the yacht racers and a ship com-ing in was sensibly resolved by a slight de-lay in the start race. • The Thursday night swims continue from the Yacht Club on Wakefield Quay with great success. It is good to see the in-creased level of safety measures with sup-port from kayakers. • The boat ramps; during this time of great activity please be patient, don’t loiter on the ramp, get well clear as quickly as possible. If you meet the HM or a launch warden, respond with a smile, we care for your wellbeing. • Monaco is popular with water skiers, jet skis and swimmers. It appears a HM pres-ence may be necessary, there are some guys or girls on jet skis or power boats that fail to understand that 5 knots within 200m of the shore or 50m of a swimmer means no faster than walking pace. The grand prize, of one solar hot water system up to the value of $10,000 as part of the Uniquely Nelson Christmas promotion, has been won by John Scowen who in the spirit of Christmas has gifted this to his family Caleb and Denel-le Scowen of Stoke. Rowena Richards of Uniquely Nel-son says: “Every year our mem-bers like to give something back to the community that has supported us across the year and we are de-lighted to have retained SolarCity

as our grand sponsor this year.”A solar hot water system should save the average home (four per-son family) in Nelson about $450 a year in electricity. Caleb says a big thank you to his dad who entered this competition at the Jaycar Nel-son store. “It is such a wonderful gift for Christmas and with a family of five we are looking forward to the power of the sun putting some cash back in our pockets.” Nelson residents also have the op-portunity of buying solar hot water via the Nelson City Council’s solar saver scheme where the cost of the system is attached to the property over a ten year loan period. Their last shop in Blenheim was judged one of the top five fish and chip shops in New Zealand, a feat the couple want to replicate in Nelson.

Calvert and Donna packed up and left Blen-heim in a matter of weeks after finding out that Seabreeze was on the market. They saw the potential in the location and size of Sea-breeze and are hoping to make it known as the best fish and chip shop in Nelson.Calvert says the range of the shop is a big plus, but the reason the shop will do well is because it is nothing fancy, “just good ole fish

The Nelson Cadet Unit has made history, defending its national championship after winning it for the first time last year. The nine-man team arrived home on Sunday with wide smiles de-spite three days of intense compe-tition and a six hour bus ride home from West Melton, near Christch-urch. Team leader Warrant Officer Class 2 Rory East says the win was as satisfying as last year, but it was a close thing. Both Nelson and Man-gawai were tied with six wins each at the end of skills competition. “We were all counting and going wait, we’ve got six and they’ve got six, what does that mean?”It meant a count back on placings was required; Nelson had more

second places than Mangawai, so it held onto its title.“We were so rapt, but we couldn’t do anything because we were all formed up, standing to attention. But once we were dismissed we were totally stoked,” says Rory. The group, based from the Nelson Army headquarters on Rutherford St, is totally independent from the Army, although it a sound base for young people wanting to head to the armed forces. It had been pre-paring for several months for the regional and national skills test and a long weekend of pain was the catalyst for the win says unit commander Tim Hoffman.“We really pushed them and worked them hard, but from that

they came away as a really tight unit and one that worked for each other. They were definitly ready for nationals.”Nelson qualified for the finals after winning South Island regionals. It then faced Mangawai and Palm-erston North in the national final. Rory says there was not one activ-ity that stood out as the hardest, but keeping their mind on the job was the most difficult part of the competition. “After the first day we had worked so hard and early on day two it was pouring with rain and we were thinking ‘god, we’ve still got two days to go’. We put our heads down though and kept working for each other.”

Born on Christmas Day its ob-vious how Noel Waters got his ‘Christian’ or first name. But unlike another famous Christ-mas baby Noel is hardly with-out sin, fibbing at least once about his age so as to leave Waimea College at just 14 to become an apprentice carpet layer. To be fair Noel had asked his dad Jack who agreed to let his son begin a trade which he’s still doing today, 50 years on.In January 1961 Noel began work for the iconic floor cov-ering specialists, Coles in Nel-son, under the guidance of Bill Knight. From his expertise in the trade to his short stature and bandy-leggedness Noel has emulated his late, great tu-tor to a tee. After a stint in Australia Noel returned to work for Coles and live with his parents who encouraged him to take a wife, settle down and build a nest of his own. Heather Eggers of the

famous and prodigious Mou-tere Hills clan, was prepared for the challenge to help tame Noel and so the couple were married in 1969. Noel and the late Brian Tay-lor left Coles in 1972 to go out on their own as Nelson Lino Layers, the Waters’ car being sold in favour of a van which doubled as a work vehicle and family wagon. Noel’s brother Allan, a floor sander, joined the contracting business which still operates today.Noel and Heather have three children – Shane, Brendon and Janine – and six grandchildren who all live locally.‘Grumpy’ to his friends and workmates, Noel is a popu-lar and regular patron at Club Waimea where he has been a member since day one. Despite qualifying for a well-earned pension from this Sat-urday, Noel has no thoughts of hanging up his knee kicker just yet.

It takes a calm presence to become a referee. Coaches, players and even spectators constantly barking orders at you. But one Nelson boy doesn’t mind it at all. In fact he thrives in the pressure environment of controlling a game, even at a young age. Nayland College student Jamie Hoult, 18, has been a referee for just over four years now, and he was recently selected to take his whistle to Australia for the Pacific Coast Slam Tour in January. The Pacific Coast Slam Tour in Port Macquaire will showcase the top teenage basketball teams from New Zealand and Australia. Over there Jamie will also officiate the Sydney Cup where teams will play against New South Wales metro and club sides in the lead up to the bigger tournament. “This is huge,” he says.Jamie is always keen to help out in sport, and he only became a referee when he was at a mini ball game and the actual one did not show up. “I just grabbed a whistle and went on.”Jamie has been referee-ing both basketball and rugby at primary, sec-ondary school, senior A and senior B levels throughout the region. But earlier in the year his basketball offici-ating saw him go to Porirua for the National Under-15 Basketball

Championship where he was involved all the way up to the semi final and third/fourth playoff. “It was a different experience that’s for sure. You had some very intense coaches.”Being younger than your average ref, Jamie cops a bit of abuse from the sidelines from people who try to push him around. But he does not seem to mind, and says he finds it easy to block out. “You just listen to what you want to. It happened in Porirua. I just told the coach to control his crowd.”During the basketball season Jamie is busy five days a week helping out. This dedication didn’t go unnoticed, he was awarded the Gowan’s Trophy for outstanding contribution to sport at the Nayland College sports prize giving.Jamie’s trip to Australia is going to cost $3000, so he will be busy over the next month trying to fund his trip. “I’m nervous, but I’m looking forward to it.”If you wish to donate money towards Jamie’s trip, give him a call on 5472817.

Cable Bay pistol club shooting for success... safely

With Rotorua’s speedway having a rep-utation as one of the trickiest tracks in the country, local Super Stock champion Brett Nicholls was keen to get a feel for the foreign dirt before the New Zealand Super Stock Championships on Decem-ber 27.He took the opportunity to travel north at the weekend to compete in the second leg of the House of Travel series and left locals and visiting drivers, who were very familiar with the testing track, scratching their heads with admiration as the south-ern raider took the spoils on the night.Brett’s dad Phil says, “We were lucky enough to draw pole position for the first race and a get win straight away. We drew 13 for the next race and gained a good 4th and then a 6th from position 22 on the grid was enough for Brett to score most points and win the event on the night.”Phil says the Rotorua track, one of the smallest in the country with a nasty tight corner, isn’t a favourite with most driv-ers but Brett enjoyed it and was able to cope with light drizzle which threatened to postpone racing.“Because we’d travelled so far for this the

club was good to us and allowed Brett to have 15 practice laps earlier on just in case the meeting got rained out.”It was on the same day last year that

Brett won the South Island Super Stock Champs at Blenheim. He has left his car at Rotorua for the NZ champs on De-cember 27.

FooTbAll Down to ten men after just 40 minutes, the odds were Canterbury United reclaiming the ASB Youth League title against Waitakere United. Nelson trio; Adam Smith, Billy Scott and Coey Turipa all started for Canterbury, but struggled against their north-ern opponents. Waitakere scored twice to seal the victory. Alex Ridsdale also made an ap-pearance late in the game.

FooTbAll Gagame Feni came on after 80 minutes for Canterbury United in their 2-0 defeat to Waitakere in the ASB Premiership. Last year’s runners up are struggling early in the competition. Gagame now heads home to the Solomon Islands for the first time in three years to spend Christmas with his family, be-fore returning to play in front of his new home in Nelson against Team Wellington on January 16.

IN BRIEF

To celebrate its 10th anniversary the Tour de Femme has in-troduced the Randonnee category for riders not wanting to race but keen to do ‘the Tour’. Randonnee will ride the 5 stage tour albeit slightly shortened.A feature of this year’s Tour is the possibility of a local taking

out the Maglia Rosa (winners) jersey. With no ‘big’ names on the line the 50 strong field includes a number who have gained experience in previous years and are back for the chal-lenge. The five stage tour starts on Tuesday 28 December and finishes two days later.

A small Nelson club has shot its way to national standings and member Brian Bishop says its all about building a solid base. The Cable Bay Pistol Club took several top plac-ings at the National Practical Shooting Confeder-ation championships earlier this year, a top effort for the seven-person team. “We’re a small club with about 25 members but we make a lot of noise when we go away.”The club was formed in 1993, growing from the Nelson Pistol Club, which is based in Golden Downs. Since then it has built a reputation around gun safety and competition success.Bruce Harvey was the pick of the Nelson shooters at the recently championships, finishing third in the three gun open event, followed closely by Bri-an in fourth position. Another Cable Bay shooter, Nigel Rout finished sixth in the same event. Sha-ron Harvey also performed well, finishing second in the standard ungraded class at her first match away from Nelson. Brian says the club is heavily focused on safety and gets a few glares from other clubs for its strictness. “If you drop a gun, point the gun in the wrong direction or accidentally dis-charge it then you are gone for the whole competi-tion, so we get really strict on it at home so when we go away we don’t get disqualified.”Brian says competing is a thrill and those involved are passionate about the sport. “It is an adrenaline rush went you’re up there and to get a handgun licence you have to jump through a whole bunch of hoops so if you have your handgun licence you really want it.”For more information on the club visit its website at www.cbpc.co.nz.

Rarely available we have a position on staff for a graphic artist. Situated in a politically incorrect environment we need someone who is basically unflappable but very, very good at their job.

Graphic Artist

Using InDesign and Photoshop on PC but soon to move to Apple, you have to be able to create effective, interesting ads and newspapers on a weekly basis while remaining calm as all around you collapses.

This is a great job, permanent and we are a pretty good team to work for, plus we are locally owned and operated. You also get to work a lot closer with other staff and clients so the role’s much more interesting! You do have to have experience in the workforce and have a great work ethic.

In the first instance please send your resume to: [email protected]

Start would be in the New Year. Some Saturday work might needed in the first instance but after you are up to speed it’s all good fun.
