FOUR category wins – including the coveted title of Commercial Builder of the Year – made Kingston Building the stand-out performer at last night’s MBA Excellence in Construction Awards. Kingston won in the Extensions, Renovations and Refurbishments under $1 million category for the University of Newcastle’s Advanced Technology Centre; in Public Buildings $2.5 million to $5 million for St John the Baptist Catholic Church at Woy Woy; and again for the church at Woy Woy in the Best Use of Steel category. Judges were impressed with Kingston’s success. Commenting on the Commercial Builder of the Year Award, they said: ‘‘It is great to be able to reward a builder for going out of his or her comfort zone into a project that could be a huge success or a huge failure. ‘‘In this case, Kingston has been victorious in two categories of this year’s excellence in construction awards. ‘‘The smaller project stood out for its solid construction management that delivered an exceptional job, but the larger one, St John the Baptist Church, would be outstanding in any company because it represents a leap into the unknown requiring a resetting of priorities in construction management. ‘‘Planning, risk assessment, documentation, contractor selection, co-ordination of contractors and consultants – head office and site office; all these elements of management had to come together while treading new ground. And at less than $4.8 million dollars – hard to believe. ‘‘Kingston has raised the bar here and church design now moves into a new and exciting era. Thanks to Kingston, the consultants and the subcontractors, the Woy Woy community are a part of this revolution.’’ Commenting on the public building award category win judges said: ‘‘‘The best public buildings are eye-catching landmarks and St John the Baptist Church is certainly that. ‘‘This building is highly visible, even bold in its appearance and scale. The eye is drawn to it from afar. It is more than a parish church – the community of Woy Woy is making a statement, demanding that we look at Woy Woy in a new way. ‘‘There is now a new grandeur which will help to fashion the future architectural style of the peninsula. ‘‘The building is based on a steel frame with steel sheet under-cladding and a very interesting zinc top cladding that is now weathering to its final patina. ‘‘The windows have been installed as clear glass but the intention is that as time and money permit these will be replaced by stained glass. The interior is largely Tasmanian oak for a soft ambience.’’
