Spreadsheets containing all necessary formulas are called templates. A template can repeatedly perform the same calculations on values entered in particular cells. This saves time compared to keying in the same formula on a regular calculator over and over again.

Suppose you wanted to calculate the areas of several triangles. You know the formula is A = ½bh. Instead of keying in this formula over and over again for each triangle, you can create a template using the formula, enter each triangle's values, and allow the spreadsheet application to perform the calculations.

Sample Question – Triangle Area

Example:Find the area of each of the following triangles:

(i) b = 20 h = 7(ii) b = 42 h = 29(iii) b = 34.6 h = 42.9(iv) b = 726.83 h = 315.92

Solution:On your computer, create the template shown below (use the directions

on the next slide):

Sample Question – Triangle Area

Solution:1. Enter all labels.2. Key in the formula in cell C2.3. Copy the formula in C2

to cells C3 through C6

4. Display the formulas

5. Name your file and save your work.

Click on the fill handle and drag down to copy. Cell references should update.

Sample Question – Triangle Area

Solution:To find the area of each triangle:• Enter all values.• Display solutions.

(The software program will calculate the areas but the solutions will be hidden. To display your solutions you will have to turn off the formula display)

You may need to widen column C to display the solutions properly. Click on the column divider and drag.

Sample Question – Net Pay

Example:A more complex example may involve a small business owner who must

calculate his or her employees' weekly pay cheques. Assume the owner has the following information:

• each employee's hourly and overtime rate• percentages of gross pay deductions for- Canada Pension Plan (CPP)- Employment Insurance (E.I.)- Income TaxBy creating a template with all necessary formulas, the business owner

can enter the number of regular and overtime hours worked weekly, and allow the spreadsheet application to calculate the net pay.

Sample Question – Net Pay

In the following example, assume • a 40-hour week is normal. Any hours over 40 are classified as overtime.• overtime is paid as 1.5 times regular hourly rate• deductions from gross pay are as follows:- 6% for CPP- 2% for E.I.- 26% for Income Tax

Create the template shown on the next slide on your computer. Note that the spreadsheet is 10 columns by 7 rows. Format necessary numbers to currency. Centre all values. Copy the formula in E3 to all the cells within that column. Save the template, as you will need it to complete this lesson's assignment.

Sample Question – Net Pay

(a) Bob makes $7.55 per hour and works 36 hours. Mike makes $8.60 per hour and works 43 hours. Fran makes $10.15 per hour and works 40 hours. Amy makes $4.55 per hour and works 48 hours. Carol makes $8.40 per hour and works 30 hours. Find the net (take-home) pay for each employee for this week. Copy and enter values on to your spreadsheet.

(b) If Mike reminded his boss that he was to receive an increase in pay to $9.20 per hour for this week, calculate his new net pay.

Conclusion

You have seen from the two examples that consistent calculations, no matter how simple or complex, can be done with the use of spreadsheet templates.

Note that the formulas in these templates are recorded in a specific way. Try to discover how they are written.

In Lesson 4, you will learn how to construct formulas for spreadsheets. For now, complete SS-H2. You will need the template that you prepared in Example 2.
