    Answer any five questions

    All questions carry equal marks

    - - -Note: Steam tables, Heat transfer and other chemical Engineering data books are to be

    provided

    1. 20,000 Kg/hr of a 420 API kerosene leaves the bottom of a distilling column at

2000c and will be cooled to 100

    0C by 68,000 kg/hr of 34

    0API mid-continent crude

coming from storage at 380c and heated to 80

    0c. A 7.0 x 10

    4Pa pressure drop is

permissible on both streams, and a combined dirt factor of 0.003 should be

    provided.

Available for this service is a 53.98cm in ID; exchanger having 158 tubes 2.54cmOD, 13 BWG tubes 488 cm long and laid out on 3.175 cm square pitch. The bundle

is arranged for four passes, and baffles are spaced 13 cm. apart. Will the exchanger be suitable? What is the dirt factor?

    2. Discuss the evaporator process in caustic soda concentration with forced circulation

    evaporators?

3.a) Discuss about vaporizer or pump-through reboiler with isothermal boiling.b) A vaporizer is to generate 4,500 kg/hr of 15 psig steam by removing heat from a

bottom product. The bottom product is 68,000 Kg/hr of approximately 420 API

kerosene leaving a column at 2050c. The design co-efficient in the vaporizer will be

about 100. Compare the true average specific volume with that obtained by the

    approximate method ts= 1210

    c 2200 /s KJ Kg = .

    4. Write the following with reference to the design of a columna) Write about the types of packings in a column.

    b) Write about the choice of plate types?

5.a) Write about the operating characteristics of sieve-Tray.

    b) Write about the following factors in the design of Sieve-Tray.

    i) Tower diameterii) Plate spacing

    iii) Entrainment

    iv) Weepage.

6.a) Discuss about the mechanical design of columns. Write about the vessel design.

    b) Explain with a neat diagram the vessel supports and vessel foundations.

    7. What is the concept of practical rules of thumb and how this influences the design of

the following?a) Design temperature and pressure

    b) Wall thickness for pressure vessel.

    c) A reactor design temperature

    d) Fractionating towers.

8.a) Write about the basic principles of scale-up.b) Write about the scale-up of stirred reactor which is heated by steam in external

    Jacket.
