GEOTEXTILE

NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY TRICHY

PRESENTED BY – GOURAV SINGH (203114002)

GEOTEXTILE:

• Geotextiles are permeable fabrics which, when used in association with soil, have the ability to separate, filter, reinforce, protect, or drain.• The four main polymer most widely used as the raw material for

geotextiles are:• Polyester• Polyamide• Polypropylene• Polyethylene

FORMS OF GEOTEXTILE:

• GEOMEMBRANE• GEOGRIDS• GEONETS• GEOCOMPESITE• GEOMAT• GEOCELL

BASIC FUNCTIONS OF GEOTEXTILES:

• SEPARATION• DRAINAGE• FILTRATION• PROTECTION• REINFORCEMENT

SEPARATION:

• Geotextiles function to prevent mutual mixing between 2 layers of soil having different particle sizes or different properties.

DRAINAGE:

• Thick non woven geotextile provide an avenue for flow of water through the plane of geotextile.

FILTRATION:

• Filtration involves the establishment of a stable interface between the drain and the surrounding soil.

PROTECTION:

• Erosion of earth embankments by wave action, currents and repeated drawdown is a constant problem• geotextile can be placed to prevent leaching of fine material

REINFORCEMENT:

• Due to their high soil fabric friction coefficient and high tensile strength, heavy grades of geotextiles are used to reinforce earth structures allowing the use of local fill material.

APPLICATIONS OF GEOTEXTILES:

• EMBANKMENT ON WEAK FOUNDATION• STEEPEND SLOPE• RETAINING WALL• SUBGRADE STABILISATION• BASE COURCE REINFORCEMENT• VOID BRIDGING• SOFT SITE CLOSURE

CONT….

• In Roads and Pavements: • Subgrade separation and Stabilization, • Base Reinforcement, • Overlay Stress Absorption and Reinforcement.

• In Subsurface Drainage: • Subgrade dewatering, • Road base drainage, • Structure drainage.

• In Erosion and Sediment Control• Hard Armor Systems, Silt Fence.

CONTI…

• In Reinforced Soil Systems: • Embankments over soft foundations, • Reinforced Steepened slopes, • Reinforced soil walls.

• In Seepage control systems• Structure water proofing, • Environmental Protection.

• In Support Systems: • Prefabricated Systems and On-site Fabrication

ADVANTAGE OF GEOTEXTILE:• Cheaper in product cost, transport and installation. • Can be installed quickly with flexibility to construct during short

period.• Consistent over a wide range of soils• Space Savings • Material Quality Control - More homogeneous than soil and

aggregates. • Better Construction Quality Control at site• Easy Material Deployment • Less Environmentally Sensitive • Improved performance and extended life• Increased safety factor• Compatible with field conditions• Increased service life of pavement section

REQUIREMENT OF GEOTEXTILE:

Endurance Properties Hydraulic Properties• Abrasion Resistance Apparent Opening Size (AOS), • UV Stability Percent Open Area, Porosity• Biological Resistance Permeability / Permittivity• Chemical Resistance Soil Retention Ability• Wet/Dry Stability Clogging Resistance• Temperature Stability In-Plane Flow Capacity• Long term durability

Performance – Soil / Fabric Properties• Stress - Strain• Creep• Friction/Adhesion• Dynamic and Cycling Loading• Soil Retention• Filtration

PARAMETERS FOR GEOTEXTILE SELECTION:

• Material Selection• Designing of Geotextile• Functional Requirements• Application and Performance Requirements• Durability Requirements• Survivability Requirements• Required Geotextile Structural and Integrity Properties• Storage, handling and installation requirements
