It took over 15,000 miles traveled, 20 different opponents, 12different cities, six different states, two prestigious tournaments, twoof the elite programs in Division I basketball and a myriad of circum-stances and situations, but it all led Liberty back to just a few stepsoutside of its own locker room as March 6, 2004, was the culmina-tion of 140 days of practice and games that completed the Flamesworld wide tour en route to their first Big South Championship in over10 years.

During the regular season, the Flames traveled as far as Alaska, toparticipate in the Great Alaska Shootout, and Arizona, to complete inthe Fiesta Bowl Classic, giving them a chance to face the likes ofDuke and Arizona.

In total, the Flames played the toughest non-conference schedulein school history and one that ranked in the Top 50 in the country.

But it all seemed to workout just perfectly for the Flames as thedifficulties of the schedule prepared Liberty for a grueling Big SouthConference regular season, which Liberty finished tied atop the regu-lar-season standings with league newcomer Birmingham-Southern,earning them their first-ever number-one seed in a Big SouthBasketball Championship and the right to host all of their tournamentgames in the Vines Center.

After surviving a pesky eighth-seeded Charleston Southern squad,60-54, which took the Flames to overtime during the regular season,Liberty picked up momentum in its quest for a second Big South titlein 10 years with an 88-73 victory over fourth-seeded CoastalCarolina, propelling the team to its fourth appearance in a Big SouthChampionship title game.

The title game pitted the top two teams in the tournament againsteach other as the top-seeded Flames squared off against second-seeded High Point, but the contest quickly proved to be a one-sidedbattle as Liberty jumped out on top of the Panthers early in the gameand never looked back en route to an 89-44 victory over High Point, marking the most dominating Big South Championship title gameperformance in the league’s 20-year history.

After the final buzzer sounded in the Vines Center on March 6,2004, most if not all of the Big South record 8,515 fans in atten-dance for the championship game stormed the court to celebratewith the victors and started a party that last several days inLynchburg.

Eight days later, the Flames returned to the Vines Center floor tohost a “Selection Show” gathering, where they learned that theywould be traveling to Buffalo, N.Y., as a 16th-seed and would facetop-seeded St. Joseph’s.

Coming off their first loss of the season, St. Joseph’s stormed outto an early lead as All-American Jameer Nelson scored 22 of theHawks’ 46 first half points. Liberty slowly overcame St. Joseph’s quickstart; however, the margin was too great and the Flames fell to theeventual “Elite Eight” team, 82-63.

The future of the Flames’ program was the bright spot for Libertyin the contest as David Dees netted a team-high 22 points, while BigSouth Rookie of the Year Larry Blair scored nine, giving the upcomingleaders of the team the taste of what they hoped would become anannual tradition during their stay at Liberty.
